No. 18: Interviews with Imagineer Kevin Rafferty and three Disney Legends from July 8, 2013 Contact us at comments@mousetalgia.com. Learn about the earliest in-"car"-nation of Cars Land from Creative Director Kevin Rafferty in this star-studded episode of Mousetalgia, recorded directly from the 2013 Pacific Northwest Mouse Meet, featuring four exclusive interviews covering many fascinating aspects of the Disney company. First, we speak with Dave Smith, the director emeritus of the Disney Archives, who tells us some secrets of his years with the company. Learn which items Dave broke, Dave's opinions about the nature of collecting, and his explanations about how the Disney Company and Disney family share items and information. Next, we talk to Kevin Rafferty about his long, productive career with Walt Disney Imagineering, including a behind-the-scenes look at the "It's Tough To Be a Bug!" attraction, and his leadership in the development of Cars Land. Finally, we attempt to corral Bill Farmer and Tony Anselmo, two of Disney's most popular voice actors, into a dual interview with varying degrees of success. Hilarity ensues! Please note: Meet up information is outdated - stay tuned for meet-up information for the 2022 D23 Expo!

Being the Disney Nerd that I am, when I see a sign that says "Walt Disney Archives" with a directional arrow, I will follow it. The Walt Disney Archives was established in 1970 to collect, preserve and make available for research the historical materials relating to Walt and the company he founded. In the Celebration of Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary Becky Cline, the Director of the Disney Archives, was more than happy to share a small piece of the Walt Disney World Archive collection. https://youtu.be/x69V0BNV70Q
Getting Primed with Michael Crawford In today's episode of My Disney Class Podcast, Howie and Ryan welcome Michael Crawford to the show. Michael is currently a show writer at the Walt Disney Company and has also written for The Walt Disney Family Museum, The Disney Archives, Imagineering, and D23! In this episode, he will guide us through how his passion for Disney started for him and how that led to him creating a very popular blog called Progress City, USA. This blog is what would eventually find its way to Diane Disney Miller and help him make other contacts and connections that led to Michael writing and working for all those incredible Disney groups listed above. Michael has also written a book called, The Progress City Primer. His book is filled with a cornucopia of Disney stories that span topics like Walt's life, the wonderfully weird stories of Disney, and the Disney that never was. On the show, Michael shares with us some of his favorite stories from his book and the details behind them and even how he did his research to gather all these great stories. Michael also has a podcast that he does with his brother that is bi-monthly called Progress City Radio Hour and if you enjoyed hearing Michael's stories on our podcasts, and I know you did, then you should go check out his podcast as well as he shares even more stories and deeper dives into the wonderful world of Disney! We hope you enjoy today's episode and as always, we would love for you to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts. Scott Wolf’s official Disney work includes everything from the production team of Disney' original “DuckTales” and “TaleSpin” animated TV series to writing 700+ online articles about Disney history for the Disney Archives’ D23 website. His Disney photography has appeared in numerous books, newspapers and other publications, including two of his own Disney-authorized photo books, featuring his favorite subject, the small details of the Disney parks. He has been hired by various departments within The Walt Disney Company for his knowledge of Disney history, much of which stems from interviews he’s personally recorded with those who have been an important part of Disney history. Scott is also the historian behind Mouse Clubhouse and the amazing YouTube video series Keeping the Magic Alive (I adore this content and have learned so much from Scott's videos). In this episode, Scott and I have a blast talking about his work at Disney (from TV production to photography and working with the Disney Archives and D23). We also chat about the Disneyland Ambassador program, some stories about Walt, and how Scott became friends with Robert Sherman. We also begin a discussion about Imagineer Harriet Burns. Welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we talk everything and anything Disney. We have yet another fun one for you this week, but first, Disney news. It’s been a long time coming. Finally, Disneyland will be reopening to California natives only on April 30th. Huzzah! The 100 year archives exhibition is coming to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. As people who really want to visit the Disney Archives, you best believe we’ll be heading over there to check that out. Disney announced they’re working on a Magic Kingdom TV Universe (MKTU maybe?). In it, they plan to focus on the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (SEA). We haven’t done a game in a while, so this week we decided to start a new game that we hope to turn into a series called “Lost in Translation.” In it, we use Google translate to take some famous Disney quotes from known to poor clone. Turns out, when you take even the most familiar quotes through 2 languages and back to English, the results can be hilarious and downright unrecognizable. So play along with us as we enjoy trying to crack these crazy word puzzles. As always, thank you for listening in. Don’t forget to tell a friend about us and to leave us a review. You rock! Have a magical week!

The Washington Library's Center for Digital History often collaborates with students to advance its research and public history projects. That can take many forms. We work regularly with faculty to integrate our digital projects into their course assignments, on other occasions we deliver lectures to students about digital history or some aspect of eighteenth-century history, and we're also fortunate to work with student interns throughout the year who assist with our projects while they gain practical, real world experience in the historical profession. On today's episode, we're excited to bring you a chat with Jamie Morris. Jamie was our summer intern, and she worked closely Jim Ambuske and Jeanette Patrick on number of the Center's initiatives, including this very podcast. Jamie is a senior majoring in history and business at Washington College in Chestertown, MD. She came to us via Wash College's C. V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, which partners with cultural institutions like the Washington Library to offer students experiential learning opportunities. In normal circumstances, Jamie would have been on site at the Library for her internship, but as that wasn't possible due to COVID_19, our digital intern became a virtual one. As you'll hear, Jamie wants to use her skills to land her dream job at the Disney Archives, so if any of you listeners have an in with a certain mouse, please do let us know. Jeanette joins Jim on the show to today to talk with Jamie about what she learned and how she hopes to one day work at the Happiest Place on Earth. About Our Guest: Jamie Morris is a senior at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. She is the recipient of a number of internships through the C. V. Starr Center for the American Experience, including most recently at the Washington Library. She is a double major in history and business at Washington College. About Our Guest Co-Host: Jeanette Patrick is the Digital Writer and Researcher in the Center for Digital History at the Washington Library. Among her many responsibilities, she serves as Associate Editor of the Digital Encyclopedia of George Washington. He holds an MA in Public History from James Madison University. She is a former Program Manager at the National Women's History Museum in Washington, D.C. About Our Host: Jim Ambuske, Ph.D. leads the Center for Digital History at the Washington Library. A historian of the American Revolution, Scotland, and the British Atlantic World, Ambuske graduated from the University of Virginia in 2016. He is a former Farmer Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Virginia Law Library. At UVA Law, Ambuske co-directed the 1828 Catalogue Project and the Scottish Court of Session Project. He is currently at work on a book about emigration from Scotland in the era of the American Revolution as well as a chapter on Scottish loyalism during the American Revolution for a volume to be published by the University of Edinburgh Press.

Join the All Enchanting Ears Ears of the Month Club! https://www.patreon.com/allenchantingears News: The plan that Disneyland proposed to the local and state governments was partially accepted last week, making it official that Downtown Disney, and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel are cleared to open, in line with the proposed plan. The plan for the theme parks are still being reviewed and have not been approved as of the recording of this episode. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/06/downtown-disney-district-disneys-grand-californian-hotel-spa-and-disneys-paradise-pier-hotel-approved-for-phased-reopening/ The new Disney Parks Pass system was launched this week for Walt Disney World guests that had existing reservations at the resort hotels. Guests needed to be signed into the My Disney Experience login, and have an active theme park ticket to proceed through the system. Be sure to have your park ticket, any hotel reservations, and your party created before you begin for the easiest path through the system. On the first day, guests were then put into a virtual queue with a very inaccurate wait time. At that point, you could “view availability” much like the Flex Pass calendar system. Green showed all parks available, yellow for some parks available, and grey for no parks available. You select a date and the available parks are displayed. Then you will need to select a time to visit the park. Afterwards, you need to review and confirm your reservation. Multi-day tickets are required to make a reservation for every day of the ticket. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/06/first-look-at-new-theme-park-reservation-system-for-disneyland-and-walt-disney-world-revealed/ and https://wdwnt.com/2020/06/how-to-access-the-new-disney-park-pass-system-at-walt-disney-world-new-availability-calendar-available/ With the parks planned reopening approaching, the Incredibles have shown up to help guests remember the guidelines to attend. Frozone will remind you to check your temperature, Mrs. Incredible will remind you to maintain proper distance with others, Dash wants you to wash your hands, and Edna Mode will remind you to cover up with a mask. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/06/together-lets-make-your-next-disney-day-incredible/ If you are one of the folks excited to get back onto Disney property, then July 9th can’t come soon enough. Disney has posted a Know Before You Go poster on what to know and be prepared for when you get back to the resort. Downtown Disney will be the first part to open and will require a few things from guests. Parking and entrances to the area will be limited. Guests will need to self-park in the Simba lot and enter Downtown Disney from the west entrance or walk from Harbor Boulevard on the east entrance. Guest’s temperatures will be screened and anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will not be allowed entry. Cleaning and sanitation will be emphasized with hand sanitizer and hand washing stations in key areas. Guests must bring their own face masks and wear them at all times, except for when dining. Physical distancing will be expected, along with limited capacity. Hours will vary by location and could be limited. Cashless payment is recommended, if at all possible. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/06/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-phased-reopening-of-downtown-disney-district-at-disneyland-resort-beginning-july-9/ Disneyland has started recalling cast members back from the furlough. The union representing food and beverage workers said that Disney was going to recall 775 cast members who will return to work on June 28th. The union represents more than 7,850 cast members. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/06/22/news-disneyland-has-started-recalling-cast-members-from-furlough/ Not everyone is as excited as we are that Disneyland is planning to reopen. Some of the Disneyland employee unions are demanding that the reopening be pushed back due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases. The union represent 17,000 of the 31,000 cast members at the resort. The unions want Disneyland to check temperatures of cast members daily, and test employees for COVID-19. – https://www.ocregister.com/2020/06/19/disneyland-employee-unions-demand-that-the-anaheim-theme-parks-not-reopen-on-july-17/ June is National Safety Month, which recognizes the importance of safety in the workplace, as well as in communities through education, leadership, and advocacy. The Disney Parks Blog posted about this and introduced some of the cast members that help make Disney Parks safe around the world every month of the year. If you are interested in learning more about the health and safety team at Disney, check out the link in our show notes. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2020/06/recognizing-national-safety-month-at-disney-parks-around-the-world/ For members of the military that purchased a Military Salute Ticket, the expiration dates have been pushed back to December 16, 2021. There will be blockout days of December 19th, 2020 through January 4, 2021 and March 26th, 2021 through April 11, 2021. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/06/19/news-disneylands-2020-military-salute-tickets-are-being-extended/ As we reported on last week, Orange County had lifted the order to wear face masks when out in public. On June 18th, the State of California stepped in and requires face masks to be worn “in common public indoor spaces and outdoors when distancing is not possible.” Children ages two and under, as well as “persons who are seated at a restaurant or other establishment that offers food or beverage service, while they are eating or drinking” is exempt from the order. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/06/18/news-california-requires-the-wearing-of-face-coverings-in-public-areas/ The Bowers Museum, which currently houses the “Inside the Disney Archives – 50 Years of Preserving the Magic” exhibition has reopened! If you are going to be in the area and want to check out the exhibit, they opened on June 19th. All people in the building will be required to wear a face mask and to practice social distancing. If you had tickets to visit during the shutdown, you can still use them. Joining the collection is a Disney Store Key, which is all white printed with sketched outlines of classic animated characters and has a few splashes of red, yellow, blue, and green, plus dark blue accents on the stem and castle. No official release date has been announced. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/06/new-ink-paint-collection-disney-store-key-coming-soon-to-shopdisney/ Some of the sights from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be available for you to build in the form of Legos coming this September. The Resistance I-TS Transport set includes the ship that you board to escape Batuu in Rise of the Resistance and includes a Lego version of Vi Moradi and Lieutenant Bek. When author Mindy Johnson set out to write a book about of the history (or as Mindy says, the “HERstory”) of Walt Disney‘s definitively female “Ink & Paint” Department, she began her research in the most obvious place: The Disney Archives. This week we present an Emporium of topics. First, Disney historian David Koenig joins us to talk about the late Frank Pfannenstiel, who was the last Disneyland cowboy. Hired in 1954 and employed at the park for 33 years, Frank, a WW II Marine veteran, was hired to care for and train horses and mules for Walt's still-in-development Disneyland park. Frank drove a covered wagon for Disneyland's opening day parade behind Fess Parker, and worked at the Disneyland Pony Farm caring for the 200+ horses, mules and other animals. Next, Michael Vargo, VP of D23 and the Disney Archives, joins us to talk about the 2018 Gold Membership Gift, which celebrates 90 years of Mickey Mouse. We'll discuss some of the surprises included in the box, and how the D23 team went through 90 years of history to choose their 23 favorite samples of memorabilia from the extensive career of Mickey Mouse. Finally, New York Times bestselling author Matthew Reinhart joins us to talk about creating pop up books, and we talk about the art of combining story and dimensional art for both his new book "Pixar: A Pop-Up Celebration." Plus, Val/Galentines Day ideas - and more!
Patrick, Kent and Cristina continue their Crisis on Infinite Earths discussion in the final of our Crisis episodes. Tim Drake means a lot to Cristina, as does Dick Grayson. What drew Cristina to Challengers in the first place? The hidden humor of Crisis. We wonder what Batman history is still canon? No Man’s Land? Cataclysm? Azbats? The DC Archives vs. the Disney Archives.

We talk about Dave's career of answering Disney fans' questions about the studio, and he discusses the easiest and hardest questions he has answered about Disney; his background as the original archivist for the Disney Studio, and stories covering everything from the Darby O'Gill banshees to Elias Disney's cache of priceless paperwork. Bonus - we host our own "Ask Dave" segment! Next, Mousetalgia talks collectibles by comparing the recent "Ghost Post" vs. Disneyland Park Pack blind boxes from DisneyStore.com - which beats expectations, and which leaves Team Mousetalgia wanting? Episode 28: Disney Legend Dave SmithThis week we were honored to be able to speak to the creator and curator of the Disney Archives, Legend Dave Smith. We discuss some of Walt's most personal items and learn how the archives began and continue to preserve the legacy of Disney. We also put some long standing rumors to rest (hopefully)
Plus - a sneak preview of next week's report from the Mouse Meet. Also, don't forget to mark your calendar for Aug. 8 at 4 pm, when the official Mousetalgia Pre-Expo Meet-up will be held on the patio outside of Trader Sam's at the Disneyland Hotel with a special guest. Don't miss it!
(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED))) This week, the Mouse Lounge reveals the magic of melody in Disneyland! But first, we go Behind the Mickey Bar, as Liana and I talk about the new Cars Land, the just opened Jolly Holiday Bakery, Castmember beards, Fastpass, and more. Next, a Mouse Lounge Special Feature: The BBCs Russell Davis looks at how the archives have treated to the two faces of Walt Disney. Uncle Walt, who brought laughter and pleasure to millions, and… the rather tough businessman and social engineer. Enjoy the second of a five part series, Double Disney. Then, from the Disney Archives: Based on the Oscar winning cartoon, “Toot Whistle Plunk and Boom” comes a marvelous record narrated by the unmistakable Thurl Ravenscroft. From the 1963 Disneyland Record DQ-1232, have a listen to “A Child’s Introduction to the Instruments of the Orchestra”. Don’t let the title fool you; this record was lavishly produced. It’s hard to believe this mini masterpiece landed in the kiddy records bin. Then, from Vault Disney: We focus on the music of two Silly Symphonies from the thirties. The first is “Music Land” from 1935 and “The Woodland Café” from 1937. Both are perfect examples of the use of music to further the narrative, and are just great fun to listen to. I’ll provide a description of the of the plot for Music Land, so you can better follow along. Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. Did you know that Disneyland boasts ten different live performance groups that play in all four corners of the park? This episode, you’ll get to hear from every one of them! You’ll hear, the Main Street Piano Player, The Dapper Dans, Hook and Ladder Company, the Straw Hatters, Billy Hill and the Hillbillies, Farley the Fiddler, The Bootstrappers, The Jambalaya Jazz Band, The Royal Street Bachelors, and The Pearly Band. Plus, you’ll hear special performances recorded on Fat Tuesday of the New Orleans Jazz Band, The Bayou Bash featuring Princess Tiana, and the Disneyland Band performing it’s full noontime concert with the theme, “Sunday in the Park”. This week, the Mouse Lounge celebrates a birthday and takes a trip around World Showcase! First up, a Mouse Lounge Special Feature: The BBCs Russell Davis looks at how the archives have treated to the two faces of Walt Disney. Uncle Walt, who brought laughter and pleasure to millions, and… the rather tough businessman and social engineer. Enjoy the first of a five part series, Double Disney. Next, from the Disney Archives, we dust off an old Capital Records album , DBX-3365 from 1954, as Disney Characters from countless films and shorts come to celebrate at Mickey Mouse’s Birthday Party. Then, from Vault Disney: We travel to Epcot Center, circa 1982, as Danny Kaye introduces us to the wonders of World Showcase. Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. Enjoy a musical trip around World Showcase featuring the talented artists and music groups who perform each day, ending a Mouse Lounge mix of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. We close the show with a pair of musical soundtracks inspired by World Showcase. First, is the Laserphonic Fantasy. This show made its debut on the World Showcase Lagoon in June 1984 and as the name implies featured lasers including the first use of non-continuous lines in a laser animation and the first use of laser graphics on a water-droplet screen. Most of the soundtrack can be found on Don Dorsey's album "Busted". Lastly, culling from le crème de la crème of French Romantic and Contemporary classical music, Impressions de France ranks as among the best soundtracks to be found anywhere in Epcot.
