In 2016, DreamWorks Animation was sold to Comcast for $3.8 billion. Before founding DreamWorks, Jeffrey was Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, where he took the studio from last place to first at the box office with hits like Three Men and a Baby, Pretty Woman, Father of the Bride and Sister Act. Most recently, Jeffrey co-founded WndrCo alongside Sujay Jaswa and has led WndrCo's investments in Airtable, Frame.io, Quibi, Vise, Placer.ai, NexHealth, Deel, and ID.me. Sujay Jaswa is one of Silicon Valley's leading business innovators. At Dropbox, he created and led the company's global business and finance organizations. Sujay and his teams raised over $1 billion, launched and scaled Dropbox's products for businesses, created partnerships responsible for over 100 million users, executed some 20 acquisitions, and scaled the global business team from two to more than 500 employees in seven global offices. During this period, the company significantly scaled overall revenue from $12 million in 2010 to over $500 million run rate, Dropbox for Business revenue from $1 million to over $200mm run rate, and users from 15 million to 300 million. Most recently, Sujay Jaswa and Jeffrey Katzenberg co-founded WndrCo and Sujay has led WndrCo's investments in Figma, 1Password, Databricks, Pango, Pilot, Rally, Zagat / The Infatuation, and other great companies. In Today's Episode with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Sujay Jaswa: 1.) From Dreamworks and Dropbox to Venture with WndrCo: How did Jeffrey and Sujay both make their way into the world of venture from Dropbox and Dreamworks? What was Jeffrey's single biggest lesson from his time leading Dreamworks and being in Hollywood? What was Sujay's biggest takeaway from being at the helm as COO at Dropbox? 2.) Operating Experience is Irrelevant and Can Be Dangerous: Why does Sujay believe that operating experience is irrelevant? What are the single biggest mistakes that operator investors make when it comes to advising their founders? What do both Sujay and Jeffrey do to try and refresh their operating experience in real time? How did Quibi impact their willingness and desire to take large risk both investing and operating? 3.) Building Teams and Hiring People: What are the single biggest hiring mistakes Jeffrey and Sujay have made? What did Jeffrey mean when he said at Disney, “if you do not come in on Saturday, do not bother coming in on Sunday”. How do Jeffrey and Sujay feel about remote work? Why did it not work for them? What did Alfred Lin @ Sequoia teach Sujay about the question all managers need to ask themselves on questing whether they should let someone go? 4.) Silicon Valley: Dead and Entitled? Why does Jeffrey strongly disagree with the death of Silicon Valley? What will happen to the generation of companies that raised too much with no product-market fit? How will the mass layoffs in the valley change the valley as it is today? Does Sujay agree that millennials are the worst segment to hire from? Are they entitled?

The latest Footnote episode of the podcast sees the return of Professor Susan Napier (Goldthwaite Professor of Rhetoric, International Literary and Cultural Studies at Tufts University), who straight from her guest turn on Chris and Alex's discussion of Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (2002) chats about the animated works and philosophy of Studio Ghibli. Listen as they examine Studio Ghibli's contribution to global animation history and their vexed industrial and creative relationship to the Walt Disney Studio; the multimedia reach of the company and its turn to theatrical stage shows and theme parks; the methodological fascination of Ghibli given their synonymy with Japanese anime (and how they differ from other representational traditions within the animated medium); and how the aesthetics and narratives of Studio Ghibli's feature films are the bearers of high levels of love, detail, and the magic of artistic creation. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

In 2018, Catherine Hand was one of two producers for Walt Disney's adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's beloved children's classic A Wrinkle in Time. Catherine's career in the entertainment business was launched working for the legendary writer/producer Norman Lear. She was the Associate Producer on Lear's Emmy Nominated ABC TV special, I Love Liberty, and helped to create the national nonprofit, People for the American Way. Later, she served as a development executive at Zoetrope, Francis Coppola's company where she worked on several projects, including Godfather III. Catherine has also worked for years in the public service sector. After having produced several large-scale events for national organizations, garnering a Gracie Award for best public affairs programming in 2009, Catherine was recruited by the Obama Administration where she was part of the core leadership team involved in communicating policy and political decisions impacting the federal workforce. Catherine shares some beautiful life lessons in this episode. "Faith is for when things are going wrong," she shares. Her lifelong dream did not come to fruition until after she turned 60. But she did not give up. "We can't changes things...but we can stop fearing them," she counsels. "Thoughts are temporary," she says of her 3:00 am musings. "They are not permanent," and we can talk back to them. One of her takeaways from writing her book, Becoming a Warrior, is that "Have something worth fighting for...that is greater than yourself." And others can benefit from what you have learned. Catherine encourages us to become warriors in the universe to illuminate others. She continues to develop new projects and enjoys coaching others to become warriors in their own lives. Her memoir, Becoming a Warrior is scheduled to be published by Bold Story Press on October 25, 2022. It will be available everywhere. "I read Madeleine L'Engle's award winning novel, A Wrinkle in Time, when I was ten years old and dreamt of one day making it into a movie. It would take five decades for my childhood dream to come true. My journey would include working alongside the television luminary Norman Lear in the creation of the nonprofit People For the American Way, and a 25 year-long conversation with author Madeleine L'Engle about her book. My memoir, Becoming a Warrior: My Journey to Bring A Wrinkle in Time to the Screen due to be released in October 2022 illustrates one woman's persistence—through a demanding career in the entertainment industry, the sudden and unexpected death of my beloved husband, raising three young children on my own—and eventual success. In 2018, over fifty years after I first read A Wrinkle in Time, Walt Disney Studios released a major motion picture based on this beloved novel directed by Ava DuVernay, written by Jennifer Lee and starred Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha Raw and Storm Reid." -- Catherine Hand “Catherine's journey of over 50 years to have A Wrinkle In Time brought to the Silver Screen is simply extraordinary. And the book's impact upon her life is both compelling and inspirational.” -- Alan Horn, Former Chairman of Walt Disney Studios - Motion Pictures “No one I've known ever loved a book more than Catherine Hand loved A Wrinkle in Time. Her perseverance and journey to make the film is nothing short of inspiring.” -- Norman Lear, award winning writer/producer To learn more, see catherinehand.com https://www.instagram.com/catherinehand5555/ twitter: @madebyhand --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/maria-leonard-olsen/support

Meet AnnieShe is a former Disney storyteller, Best Selling Author, six-figure founder, and branding expert. In 2013, she quit a dream job telling stories at the Walt Disney Studios to start her agency, Greatest Story Creative. Since then, Annie has branded 125+ businesses spoken for 1000s. And release two best-selling books, including her newest, Established Yourself, Brand, Streamline and Grow Your Greatest Business. What's the best way to grow a service business without living on social media? This is what I get all the time. Because you know, nobody, nobody that I know in real life wants to live on social media wants to like have to be on all the platforms and posting what they had for dinner. And so many people feel like they don't want to put themselves out there in that way. And, you know, I think it's possible to grow a service-based business without relying on 24/7 social media. And I had to carve that path out for myself. That's a little bit of how I've been able to grow my business to consistent six figures by letting go of what the Guru constantly says about how you have to do this 24/7 Bro marketing approach. I tried all that it almost burnt me the heck out. And back in 2016, I decided you know what, I'm gonna double down on relationships. I'm gonna double down on making the business I already have the best possible business it can be and not stressing about my follower count and my likes and all of these things that seem like they're important, but weren't moving the needle for me. And that's, you know, you just mentioned my new book. That's exactly what I'm sharing and establish yourself. Is that process? How do you take your existing business and make it take it to a new level of passion and profit without it being all about social media, there are so many ways to grow a business. And I know that's something you talk about a lot, Laurie with those that you interview, because with this being social capital and being about relationships, right, like people just forget that even the things you see online happen because of those behind-the-scenes relationships. And so what I teach and what I practice myself is to not stress about 24/7 marketing, but instead optimize the people you already know your past clients, your current clients, your referral partners, and make sure those relationships are fantastic. Get in front of them consistently. And if you do those kinds of things, you can have a sustainable business that you love that loves you back and not have, you know, more than just a couple, a handful of followers on social media. Lori: I agree with that. And I've seen several startups or I like to call them solopreneurs where their corporate turned into entrepreneurs. Focus on building their social media. But really, that's just one piece of the puzzle. There's a lot of movement and area that you can lead to traction can happen without even using social media. Social media is a great place to have one message communicated to many people at once. But it takes time and consistency but it shouldn't be the end of all   How do I stand out with my marketing? That's like I think everybody's favorite question to ask like how do I stand out? And I like it but I'm going to ask are a different way, which is it's the wrong question altogether. Okay, because I think that everybody is. So I think everyone thinks that their kind of main consideration with marketing is standing out that, oh, I need to come up with something original. So I get people's attention. And I'm sort of of the mind that nothing, there's nothing original under the sun, like, you're not going to create something that is just so different from what everybody else says that that is going to be your marketing, that is an efficient strategy. And sort of, you know, there are only so many words in the English language, for example, to describe what a leadership coach does or doesn't do. And people are kind of trying to search for this elusive perfect...

The box set; 50 Vintage Sci-Fi short stories is available on Spotify for only $9.99. More than 27 hours of vintage sci-fi for only $9.99 now on Spotify. He was told he had no talent by a creative-writing professor at Ohio State University and then he went on to become one of the most prolific science fiction writers of all time having written more than 1700 short stories and articles, at least 100 books and dozens of screenplays and television scripts.Born in Cleveland Ohio in 1934 Harlan Ellison wrote what is regarded by many as the best episode of Star Trek, "The City on the Edge of Forever" and he hated it, because it was rewritten. It won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Episodic Drama on Television. At the Hugos he dedicated the award to “the memory of the script they butchered, and in respect to those parts of it that had the vitality to shine through the evisceration.”Ellison sold scripts to a lot of TV shows in the 60s, The Flying Nun, Burke's Law, Route 66,The Outer Limits,The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Cimarron Strip, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.A word used frequently to describe Ellison was cantankerous. He was hired as a writer for Walt Disney Studios, but was fired on his first day after Roy O. Disney overheard him in the studio commissary joking about making a pornographic animated film featuring Disney characters.Ellison settled out of court over allegations that James Cameron had plagiarized elements of his work in writing the screenplay for The Terminator; and he once sent a dead gopher to a publisher who violated a clause in his contract. And then there was the time in the 60s he was nose to nose in an argument with Frank Sinatra which nearly led to physical blows. The altercation, which started when the always impeccably dressed Sinatra didn't like the boots Ellison was wearing, was short, lasting only about 3 minutes before Ellison walked away. In 2013 Ellison admitted he kept the boots preserved in a plastic bag in his closet.Harlan Ellison was cantankerous; he was talented, and he wrote more than science fiction. He won 8 Hugo Awards, four Nebula Awards, two Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America and 5 Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers Association.A writer for more than 60 years Harlan Ellison died at his home in Los Angeles in 2018 at the age of 84.From the February 1956 edition of Infinity Science Fiction, Glow Worm by Harlan Ellison… Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast… From Chaos a space-consuming creature reachedslimy tentacles toward trembling planets. Andno man of the old fighting breed remained oneffete Earth to battle the invulnerable monster. The Monster that Threatened the Universe by Russ Winterbotham. That's next week onThe Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.

You guessed it: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, presented by Walt Disney Studios. The chief of animation, as well as 4 other animation specialists have just finished watching a first generation copy of a short film showing what looks a like a living, breathing, moving creature which should only exist in folklore and in the minds of movie makers and writers. Even Disney executive Ken Peterson is hugely impressed with how the film makers made this creature look so real. When Peterson asked the man who had brought the footage in to Disney, which studio had it been produced in....he got the shock of his life when he was told that it hadn't been filmed in a studio....it had been filmed in the forests of Northern California.....
