Tony is also the man behind the parody profile on Facebook called Definitely The Real Alex Lifeson where he pretends to be a guy pretending to be the real guitarist from Rush. Prior to the interview, Mark reads comments from recent episodes, shares a personal update, which includes a few engagements he'll be speaking at in person and virtually: IN PERSON: (Brantford, ON) Brantford Public Library (April 2, 2025 from 6 PM to 7:30 PM) – Inside the Writer's Mind: Mark Leslie Lefebvre on Ghosts and Paranormal Storytelling VIRTUAL: (Online) The BookFest (April 6, 1:30 PM Eastern). This episode is sponsored by Toronto Indie Author Conference, taking place April 26 & 27, 2025 in Toronto, ON. The schedule appears below Learn more about Toronto Indie Author Conference 2025 here.   In their chat, Mark and Tony talk about: How Tony is a multi-faceted nerd who used to tape episodes of SCTV so he could play them back and memorize them Being big into Monty Python and, of course, Rush Always thinking that he was going to be an actor and his love of Shakespeare, but always getting the comedic parts Being a good actor but not being so good at auditioning because he freezes when put in a pressure situation Founding a comedy sketch troop called Obscene But Not Heard which was partially inspired by his love for Kids In The Hall Evolving into doing stand-up despite being a shy person Deciding to leave stand-up comedy around the time that Covid hit The movie XROXY (a modern tale based on Cyrano de Bergerac) that Tony wrote after he pitched it to some producers he had done some other work for Having a strength for dialogue but a weakness when it comes to plot Being brought in to help punch up an episodic YouTube series that was a campy horror flick and make it funnier (TRUCKSTOP BLOODSUCKERS) Tony's most recent script entitled SAVING MR. CHRISTMAS and how it evolved into a completely different movie than the one that he originally pitched The "we love this, change everything" thing that happens with movies Tony's WAITING FOR WAITING FOR GODOT which is a show about two women waiting for a production of the play Waiting For Godot which never happens, and how that play was inspired by the way that days could blur together for people, particularly as we get older and "become that guy" Being a Rush fan since he first heard "Spirit of Radio" How Tony was inspired to create a fake Alex Lifeson account on Facebook after he's seen a fake Geddy Lee account The relation between ADHD and being "all in" on something -- like Rush, Monty Python and Rush for Tony How, during Covid Tony did a one-man reading of Monty Python and the Holy Grail Doing a Canadian overdub of Dragonball Z Adapting a pilot from a Canadian novel called The Smeltdog Man by Frank Macdonald and leveraging the "Deadpool" style of breaking the fourth wall Advice that Tony would give to the young nerdy Mark and Tony How Tony used to write sketches even though he didn't have an outlet for them The Dungeons & Dragons podcast that Tony is a part of called The +2 Rodcast And more . . .    After the interview Mark reflects on a few things that came up in the discussion.   Links of Interest: Tony's Definitely The Real Alex Lifeson Facebook Profile Tony on Twitter/X Tony Binns on IMDB #ROXY Truckstop Bloodsuckers Fugget About It Buy Mark a Coffee Patreon for Stark Reflections EP 353 - Tao Wong on The Toronto Indie Author Conference Alex Lifeson's Speech on Behalf of Rush at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Mark's YouTube channel Mark's Stark Reflections on Writing & Publishing Newsletter (Signup) An Author's Guide to Working With Bookstores and Libraries The Relaxed Author Buy eBook Direct Buy Audiobook Direct Publishing Pitfalls for Authors An Author's Guide to Working with Libraries & Bookstores Wide for the Win Mark's Canadian Werewolf Books This Time Around (Short Story) A Canadian Werewolf in New York Stowe Away (Novella) Fear and Longing in Los Angeles Fright Nights, Big City Lover's Moon Hex and the City Only Monsters in the Building The Canadian Mounted: A Trivia Guide to Planes, Trains and Automobiles Yippee Ki-Yay Motherf*cker: A Trivia Guide to Die Hard Merry Christmas!

I'm honored to have my incredible friend, Dannel Wissler, on the podcast today!Dannel is a farm wife and mom to 4, and she also had a deep desire to become a licensed counselor. As a licensed professional counselor, Dannel helps people address a wide variety of emotional needs and challenges. In today's conversation, Dannel and I delve into cultivating resilience, fighting well, and the crucial role that mental health has on family dynamics in rural America. Dannel loves working with many different types of clients, from couples and families to first responders, and even those in the ag space. People in agriculture are incredibly strong and resilient (which is something to be proud of). But...the stigma that's associated with this space often leads us to believe that it's weak (or even unnecessary) to ask for help when we're struggling with our mental health. We aren't meant to suffer in our own little ‘silo' that we've created; feeling like we need to hide our shortcomings and woundings from everyone but our families (who usually see the ‘uglier' parts of us) isn't something we can do forever either! It's vital that we stay anchored in the present, while getting help so we can successfully move forward, and ultimately, thrive. In this episode, we cover:Dannel's inspirational journey of pursuing her dreams, while still being a present wife and momThe entrepreneurial ‘push' that led Dannel to start Willow Oaks Counseling + the wide variety of clients she supportsMultiple barriers affecting the ag community + why it's necessary to ‘break the stigma' when you're struggling and need support with your mental healthHow Dannel's role in both agriculture and counseling have influenced each other, and every part of her lifeDannel's book, Saving Mr. Toad Resources & Links:Join the waitlist for the Good Movement CollectiveGood Movement music by: Aaron EspePodcast produced by: Jill Carr PodcastingConnect with Dannel:Check out her websiteSend her an email at dwissler@willowoakscounseling.comGet a copy of Dannel's book, Saving Mr. ToadConnect with Terryn:Follow on Instagram @terryn.drielingCheck out my websiteSend me an email at terryn@faithfamilyandbeef.comMake sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!Find the complete show notes here: https://terryndrieling.com/cultivating-resilience-fighting-well-dannel-wissler-on-mental-health-and-family-dynamics-in-rural-america-episode-46

It's that time of the year again when we celebrate Hanksgiving, and this time, we're serving up a special treat with "Saving Mr. Banks." This film isn't just your typical Tom Hanks Disney movie; it's a journey into the heart of the Mary Poppins backstory, filled with emotional depth and Hollywood intrigue. We kick off with a cinematic analysis of "Saving Mr. Banks," examining how this biopic weaves the complex relationship between P.L. Travers, portrayed brilliantly by Emma Thompson, and Walt Disney, brought to life by Tom Hanks. It's not just a film review; we're delving into the layers of character study, exploring the struggles and triumphs in bringing Mary Poppins from page to screen. As we unwrap this Thanksgiving movie special, we'll also talk about the historical context. How does this film fit into the wider Hollywood biographical film genre? What does it reveal about the film industry, especially regarding classic Disney adaptations? And of course, we'll share our thoughts on the film's portrayal of the author P.L. Travers and her iconic creation. But it's not all serious! Expect our usual fun, family-friendly banter, a bit of Disney behind-the-scenes gossip, and maybe even a sing-along (no promises, though!). It's a Film & Whiskey tradition to look at films through the lens of our favorite beverages, and this episode is no different. Matt Lowry, LPP and Dr. Angela Lauria and explore the life and legacy (and Autistic traits) of one of the most prominent figures in the history of animation and entertainment: Walt Disney. Was he on the autism spectrum? Join us on a virtual culture trip as we dive in!Walt Disney had a difficult childhood, having to work to support his family from age 9. He found escape and joy in visiting an amusement park called Electric Park. As an adult, Walt Disney became obsessed with building his own theme parks, pouring all his energy into envisioning and planning Disneyland and Walt Disney World. He loved trains and incorporated them extensively into his parks.Walt had intense focus when interested in something (something Autistic people know all about!), but lost interest in his animation business as he became consumed with his theme park dreams. He wanted total creative control.“Yeah, but like when you have a way and you can see it and you're sure it'll work and all you have to do is get everyone on board and then it doesn't work—that is like such a devastating feeling. Like when you can get people on board, it's an amazing feeling”. –AngelaWhile his work brings joy to millions of people around the world, there are some darker aspects of his legacy that are not as well-known, including alleged associations with anti-semites and Nazi sympathizers—including an association with Leni Riefenstahl, the propaganda filmmaker for Hitler's regime.Disney struggled to understand why his employees were unhappy with some of his hyper-controlling policies around their compensation and treatment. He took it very personally when they went on strike. The podcast hosts also discuss his controversial attitudes towards race, gender, and labor unions and try to make sense of how autism might have influenced the good and the bad aspects of Disney's legacy.“So he decided oh I've got a lockdown on that I must have lots of control over things so this will never ever ever happen again, which became a theme throughout his life of, ‘I will no longer be bamboozled, I will be the bamboozler.'” —MattWalt Disney died before Disney World opened, but his vision for an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) inspired aspects of it. I have an epic conversation in store for you all today. Our guest is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, filmmaker, John Lee Hancock. While working as a lawyer by day back in 1986, John moonlighted as a screenwriter, writing script after script. His spec script A Perfect World caught the eye of Steven Spielberg and eventually was directed by Clint Eastwood. After that success, he went on to direct the crowd-pleasing The Rookie.A true story about a coach who discovers that it's never too late for dreams to come true. Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid) never made it out of the minor leagues before a shoulder injury ended his pitching career twelve years ago. Now a married-with-children high-school chemistry teacher and baseball coach in Texas, Jim's team makes a deal with him: if they win the district championship, Jim will try out with a major-league organization. After the box-office success of The Rookie, John tackled the epic story of The Alamo.A semi-historical account of the standoff at an abandoned mission during the Texas fight for independence. The Texans, led by Colonel Travis, managed to temporarily hold off the Mexican army of Santa Anna. The Texans were outnumbered 183 to 2000 and eventually succumbed. After the fall of the Alamo, General Sam Houston led another group of Texans against Santa Ana's army in San Jacinto where they defeated the Mexican army, which eventually led to an independent Texas.Hancock's famous five-year hiatus comeback film, The Blind Side, an adaptation of Micheal Lewis's 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game yield and performed outstandingly. The film received countless major awards nominations including an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and a win for Best Actress for Sandra Bullock. The Blind Side is the story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family. The Blind Side went on to make $309.2 million internationally on a $29 million budget. Not too bad.Just this year, Hancock released his latest HBO Max neo-noir crime thriller, The Littel Things, starring Academy Award winners and heavyweights Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto.Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe Deacon is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city.John also tackled bring the legendary Walt Disney to the big screen in Saving Mr. Banks starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.Author P.L. Travers travels from London to Hollywood as Walt Disney adapts her novel Mary Poppins for the big screen. The Highwaymen bring John together Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson to the tale that follows the untold true story of the legendary lawmen who brought down Bonnie and Clyde. When the full force of the FBI and the latest forensic technology aren't enough to capture the nation's most notorious criminals, two former Texas Rangers must rely on their gut instincts and old-school skills to get the job done.I had a ball talking with John about filmmaking, how he almost broke Steven Spielberg's Rosebud prop from Citizen Kane when they first met, and so much more. He really goes into detail about his creative process, how he was able to navigate Hollywood, how to deal with the highs and lows of the business and so much more.Enjoy my conversation with John Lee Hancock.

The Buzz 1: I queried ChatGPT how it writes a novel. Response: As a language model, ChatGPT can generate text in a variety of styles and formats, including novels…text that is well-formed and coherent, it may not necessarily generate a novel that is original, engaging, or emotionally impactful. Writing a good novel …requires creativity, imagination, and a deep understanding of human emotions and experiences. The Buzz 2: I queried ChatGPT on legal issues of using AI to write a novel. Response: As a machine learning model, I do not have the ability to legally hold or own intellectual property. However, the ownership of intellectual property generated by a machine learning model can be a complex issue. Generally speaking, the creator of a work is considered to be the owner of the copyright in that work. In the case of a story or novel generated by a machine learning model like mine, the ownership of the copyright would typically be held by the entity or individual that created and trained the model. The Buzz 3: I asked ChatGPT for movie quotes that define a “novelist”. “A novelist is simply a person who creates imaginary characters and then sits back to see what they will do.” [P. L. Travers, played by Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks, 2013 biographical drama film] “Being a novelist is like being a detective, only instead of solving a crime, you're trying to solve the mysteries of the human heart.” [Henry DeTamble, played by Eric Bana, The Time Traveler's Wife, 2009 romantic sci-fi drama film] “As a novelist, you have to be prepared to live with your characters for a long time. You have to know them inside and out, to be able to write about them in a way that is authentic and true.” [Jane Austen, played by Anne Hathaway, Becoming Jane, 2007 biographical romantic drama film] “A writer is the sum of their experiences. He had a series of successful comedies in the 80's like Bachelor Party (1984), The Money Pit (1986), Dragnet (1987), and Turner and Hooch (1989).    Big really shot Hanks's popularity in 1988, and he started dipping his toe in some romance roles like Joe versus the Volcano (1990), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You've Got Mail (1998). And his role as Woody in Toy Story (1995) continues to evolve and become popular and has even inspired a new Disney park area.    But it was his role in the drama Philadelphia (1993) that won him his first Oscar, only to be followed up the following year with Forrest Gump (1994) with another Oscar. Plus other incredible performances in Apollo 13 (1995), Saving Private Ryan (1998), and The Green Mile (1999)   He continues to create well-liked films with humor, drama, and emotion into the 21st century with memorable roles in movies like Cast Away (2000), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), and Elvis (2022) Are you a fan of Tom Hanks?
