Walt Disney left behind big dreams when he died in 1966. Perhaps none was greater than the hope that his son-in-law, Ron Miller, would someday run his studio. Under Miller's leadership, Disney expanded into new frontiers: global theme parks, computer animation, cable television, home video, and video games. Despite these innovations, Ron struggled to expand the Disney brand beyond its midcentury image of wholesome family entertainment, even as times and tastes evolved. Tensions between Miller and Walt's nephew, Roy E. Disney, threatened to destroy the company, leading Wall Street "Gordon Gekko" types to come after Mickey Mouse. At the same time, the aging Animation Department- once the core of Walt's business-was one memo away from shutting down forever. Rather, thanks to the radical efforts of Walt's veterans to recruit and nurture young talent, it was revived by this sudden influx of artists who would go on to revolutionize the film industry. Additionally, this new generation would prove over time that animation was so much more than just kids' stuff- it was a multibillion-dollar industry. After Disney is the upstairs-downstairs story of the executives and animators who clashed and collaborated to keep America's most storied company alive during the most uncertain period in its one hundred year history.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

For this third archive episode, Chris and Alex revisit a real bucket list moment by journeying back to July 2021 and the episode on Treasure Planet (Ron Clements & John Musker, 2002), which featured as its very special guests the film's directors Ron Clements and John Musker. Faced with a host of technical issues (alongside barely-concealed disbelief when Disney animation royalty first joined the video call), this episode is a particular favourite, and for good reason - expect turns to the industrial origins of Treasure Planet and the film's initial pitching to Disney chairman and chief executive Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney, and Thomas Schumacher, as well as reflections on its use of the digital painting tools in relation to the landscape of Hollywood animation of the 1990s. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

Disney, Michael Eisner, Frank Wells, and Imagineers like Craig Russell, Paul Comstock and of course, Joe Rohde. He shares the role Jane Goodall played in supporting the park and of adventures in constructing it. Join us as we talk about the pioneers of Disney's Animal Kingdom who were the leaders that truly made this park a reality that we know and love today. Our big thanks to Rick Barongi who joined me for this podcast and has done so much to further the betterment of animals, nature and conservation throughout the world. Hosts Dave Bossert and Aljon Go talk about the latest pop-culture and film news as well as remember Roy E. Disney. Roy E. Disney (January 10, 1930 – December 16, 2009) was the longtime senior executive for the Walt Disney Company, which was founded by his father, Roy O. Disney, and his uncle, Walt Disney. At the time of his death, he held more than 16 million shares (about 1% of the company), and served as a consultant for the company, as director emeritus for the board of directors.* As the last member of the Disney family to be actively involved in the company, Disney was often compared to his uncle and father. Accomplished Disney author David Bossert has chronicled the lives of famous Disney figures in his previous titles, including executive Roy E. Disney and furniture designer and architect Kem Weber. In his latest book, Claude Coats: Walt Disney's Imagineer – The Making of Disneyland from Toad Hall to the Haunted Mansion and Beyond, Dave uncovers the story of the Disney Legend and Imagineer. Coates was best known as a gifted animator and later as a principal force behind the art direction and show design for attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean, it's a small word, Alice in Wonderland, and Adventure thru Inner Space, among numerous others. After much development and anticipation, the book debuts this fall. Joining host Brett Nachman on this episode of Notably Disney are Dave Bossert, the book's author, as well as Disney Imagineer Alan Coats, Claude's son, who provided the book's preface and was a pivotal force in its development. This title is an essential purchase and read for your Disney nonfiction collection. Claude Coats: Walt Disney's Imagineer – The Making of Disneyland from Toad Hall to the Haunted Mansion and Beyond is available for pre-order through The Old Mill Press. The press release for the book describes it as exploring "Coats' first fifteen-years designing and building some of the most iconic and enduring attractions at Disneyland including Alice in Wonderland, The Submarine Voyage, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, and so many more. This 264-page book is profusely illustrated with many never-before-seen photographs and artworks." Learn more about author Dave Bossert by visiting his website: DavidBossert.com. The 2002 Disney science-fiction epic Treasure Planet (Ron Clements & John Musker, 2002) is the focus of Episode 78 of the podcast, which looks at the melding together of the Disney formula with space fantasy in this swashbuckling adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 adventure novel Treasure Island. Joining Chris and Alex for this bumper episode are two very special guests: Ron Clements and John Musker, who aside from writing and directorial duties on Treasure Planet are known as a filmmaking duo absolutely central to the renaissance of Disney animation in the 1980s and 1990s. They are the writers and directors of a number of Disney feature films, including The Great Mouse Detective (1986), The Little Mermaid (1989), Aladdin (1992), Hercules (1997), The Princess and the Frog (2009) and Moana (2016), as well as Treasure Planet, the Mouse House's 43rd animated feature film and one of the studio's rare turns to the codes and conventions of science-fiction storytelling. Listen as they trace the industrial origins of Treasure Planet and the film's initial pitching' to Disney chairman and chief executive Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney and Thomas Schumacher; the evolution of the story from Ron and John's early treatment to the first draft of the script; the nature of adaptation and the creative affordances of an animated re-telling; the ‘cyborgian' identity of Treasure Planet in its combination of traditional technique and digital processing (including its use of the digital painting tool Deep Canvas), and where the film's ethos of 'something old, something new' sits in relation to the landscape of Hollywood animation of the 1990s; the creative contributions of animator Glen Keane to the development of John Silver; and remembering the ‘tough period' for Disney Feature Animation that surrounded Treasure Planet's 2002 release and subsequent lukewarm critical reception.

“When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.” Roy E. Disney Welcome to part 3 of the Styling Your Life series. In this episode, we explore the power of being in flow and honoring our core values. We can plan as much as we want, but sometimes we can’t control our environment. So, we talk about creating and exuding grace for ourselves and how to prioritize daily. As mentioned in the episode the planner I use is the Freedom Mastery Law of Attraction Planner. It’s amazing for all my planning needs including my Mindful Monday Mantras. Also, once I confirmed my core values, everything I showed up to do became so much easier and my confidence in my decisions grew. I was taught this exercise in my mentorship program by an amazing human and business strategist named Terra Bohlmann @terrabohlmann. Check her out for added inspo. Reliable data tells us exactly how many motorcycle riders have died trying to navigate an S-curve at 100 miles per hour. The straightforward logic of traditional accounting, with its linear, no-threshold thinking, predicts one-tenth as many deaths at 10 miles per hour. But we know this is ridiculous. The number of riders that die at 10 or 20 miles per hour is likely to be zero. There is a threshold speed at which the curve becomes dangerous. Any extrapolation that crosses that threshold is certain to be inaccurate. If you understand the concept of “extrapolations that cross the threshold,” you have the key you need to understand why financially focused businesspeople often make breathtakingly bad decisions in business. The rules of accounting make it counterintuitive for a financially trained person to perceive a numerical threshold at which the laws of math are suddenly altered. But keep in mind the threshold speed of the motorcycle in the S-curve: deaths at speeds above that numerical threshold will have no correlation to deaths at speeds below it. In effect, the laws of math are suddenly altered. You and I know that an invisible force, momentum, is affecting the motorcycle and causing it to careen out of control. Although momentum can be measured, there's no column for it on a financial spreadsheet. Momentum in business can be positive or negative, pushing your company forward or back. Advertising, public relations, word-of-mouth and social media provide momentum to a business. But a threshold called “the experience of the customer” will dramatically alter these efforts, accelerating them forward or holding them back. If your typical customer's experience is delightful, your communication efforts will be highly effective. But if that experience falls short of delightful, advertising, public relations, word-of-mouth and social media will no longer have the desired effect. Financial types like to “hold advertising accountable,” because it's easy to blame poor advertising for every decrease in sales opportunities. But no calculation is ever made for the cumulative impact of un-wowed customers. Financial types never consider the threshold of disappointment at which once-loyal customers abandon ship. When Michael Eisner came to Disney in 1984, he was initially perceived as a golden boy of finance, making Disney wildly profitable during a time when its rivals were faltering. He worked his miracle by putting Disney's greatest cinematic treasures on DVD, milking every last dollar from the rich heritage that had taken the Disney brothers half a century to build. Within a few years, video sales were providing almost all the profits for Disney's movie division and, by 2004, Disney had raked in $6 billion from video and DVD sales. But then the Disney cow was dry. Michael Eisner looked at assets and opportunities through a financial lens. He had none of the whimsy of adventure, none of the imagination or commitment to excellence that had guided the Disney brothers. While busily milking the cow and making himself more than a billion dollars in the process, Eisner quietly abandoned the values and traditions of Disney. “A company without values and traditions is a train without a track, unable to gain momentum.” – The Monday Morning Memo for July 14, 2014 “In 2003, Roy E. Disney resigned from his positions as Disney vice chairman and chairman of Walt Disney Feature Animation, accusing Eisner of turning the Walt Disney Company into a ‘rapacious, soulless' company (against everything Walt Disney believed in and stood for.) ‘You can't fool all of the people all the time. Nor can you succeed by getting by on the cheap,' said Disney, referring to his accusations that Eisner slashed spending on the Disney theme parks, leading to closed rides, peeling paint and unhappy customers.” – disney.wikia.com/wiki/Michael_Eisner The cow was angry at being

The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
Roy E. Disney saved the Walt Disney Company...twice. He was at the center of two memorable boardroom battles in 1984 and again in the early 2000s. Both times the company came out better for it. Tim Callaway interviews longtime Disney animator, director and producer Dave Bossert, who's written a new book about Roy E. Disney that touches on his well-known corporate entanglements but is mostly about his lesser-known personal side and the many people within the Walt Disney Company--particularly in animation--who knew, respected and admired him. It's an insightful look at the man who helped lead the charge to resurrect his father's and uncle's company, and to enable Disney's second golden age of animation. www.TheMouseCastle.com
