No radio show opening is more memorable for many fans than the one heard on Inner Sanctum Mysteries. This disturbing simple salvo led people into thirty minutes of suspense and horror sprinkled with puns from a creepy host, all of which can now be heard again in sparkling audio quality from Radio Archives. Inner Sanctum Mysteries was the brainchild of producer Himan Brown, inspired by the unsettling creaking door in the basement of a studio where he once worked. Brown took that inspiration and built around it a formula that lived on beyond the show itself. Listeners tuned in every week to hear that door open and be welcomed by the sinister, yet often humorous host to join him in a chair near the fire inside the Inner Sanctum for a story sure to chill them to the bone. Stories on Inner Sanctum Mysteries originally included both classic and original tales, the new stories taking center stage as the show continued. With writers like pulp scribes Emile Tepperman and Robert Newman, as well as Robert Sloan, Milton Lewis, and others, it is little surprise that Inner Sanctum is still beloved by fans today. Utilizing numerous clichés and literary devices, Inner Sanctum Mysteries carried listeners into the heart of horror, a liberal dose of camp often thrown in. Using voices ranging from star Boris Karloff to a veteran crew of New York radio actors, Inner Sanctum set the standard for horror programs both on radio and even inspired decades of horror hosts on television. Using voices ranging from star Boris Karloff to a veteran crew of New York radio actors, Inner Sanctum set the standard for horror programs both on radio and even inspired decades of horror hosts on television.Inner Sanctum Mysteries features some of the best of fright, terror, and fantastic storytelling old time radio has to offer!00:00:00.000 = INTRODUCTION00:01:54.794 = Dead To Rights (May 22, 1945)00:31:36.515 = Musical Score (May 29, 1945)01:01:05.169 = Death Across The Board (June 05, 1945)01:30:43.631 = Portrait of Death (June 12, 1945)02:00:24.511 = Dead Man's Holiday (June 19, 1945)02:29:55.109 = Dead Man's Debt (June 26, 1945)02:59:14.586 = Dead Man's Deal (August 28, 1945)03:28:53.832 = Murder Prophet (September 04, 1945)03:58:37.908 = The Last Story (September 11, 1945)04:22:21.083 = Terror By Night (September 18, 1945)SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…This episode is sponsored by http://RadioArchives.comWeird Darkness Retro Radio theme by Storyblocks.= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = ="I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness." — John 12:46Find out how to escape eternal darkness at https://weirddarkness.com/eternaldarknessWeirdDarkness® - is a registered trademark. WDW Radio # 772 - Disney Legend Marc Davis: The Man Who Shaped the Humor and Heart of Disneyland - From the WDW Radio Archives This week, we open up the Archives and journey through the creative genius of Disney Legend Marc Davis with special guest, my friend, the late, great, historian and author Jim Korkis. We'll explore the wizardry behind Davis's electromechanical marvels, and how Marc injected humor into beloved attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Country Bear Jamboree, and the Enchanted Tiki Room, and learn about his lasting impact on Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. And you'll be immersed in the stories of his iconic contributions to classic films, his analytical approach to animation, and how his mastery brought to life characters like Cinderella and the formidable Maleficent. You'll also learn of the heartwarming love story between Marc and his equally talented wife, Alice, and the film they inspired. It's an episode filled with nostalgia, inspiration, and a touch of pixie dust, and just as we pay homage to the enduring legacy of Walt Disney's “Renaissance Man.” And I invite you to remember look for the visual cues that celebrate his life and work next time you're visiting the happiest and most magical places on Earth.- What is your favorite Marc Davis attraction, gag, or character? WDW Radio # 763 - Alan Menken Interview - From the WDW Radio Archives As we come to the end of year, I found myself once again getting sentimental and nostalgic. I am always grateful for the incredible opportunities this show, thanks to you, has afforded me to share with you... including conversations with true legends. So this week, I went back into the WDW Radio Archives to bring you one of my favorites. In addition to being a Disney Legend, he is the recipient of multiple Academy Awards, Golden Globes and Grammys for his work on Disney animated classics such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Enchanted and, of course, Beauty and the Beast. And as I recently discussed on our Best of the Best from the Disney Parks Around the World, he also wrote what is arguably one of, if not the, most beautiful song in a Disney Park. Legendary composer Alan Menken joined me on Show 196 back in 2010 to talk about his early career and helping to usher in the renaissance of Disney animation, as well as his work on Disney's 50th full-length animated feature, Tangled. It's a fascinating look into the life and music of a man who continues to make magic for generations of Disney fans. - What is your favorite Alan Menken piece of music, or film that he composed the music for? Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. It's a fascinating look into the the life and music of a man who continues to make magic for generations of Disney fans. - What is your favorite Alan Menken piece of music, or film that he composed the music for? WDW Radio # 761 - Finding Walt in Walt Disney World - From the WDW Radio Archives This week, as we celebrate the birth of Walt Disney on December 5th, and the grand opening of Dreamers Point in EPCOT on that same date, we embark on a special episode from the WDW Radio Archives. In this week's episode, we're going back to Show # 298, as we embark on a magical journey of Finding Walt... in Walt Disney World. Our mission? To uncover the hidden gems, intricate details, and heartfelt tributes that pay homage to Walt Disney, the visionary pioneer who sparked this world of wonder. As we virtually visit the parks, we'll connect the sights, sounds (and yes, maybe even tastes) around us with the legacy and spirit of the man who dreamt it all into existence. It's a fun, fascination exploration as we seek out the essence of Walt Disney in every corner of his magical kingdom, where every step tells a story and every detail has a purpose. - What is the one question you would ask Walt Disney if you could? WDW Radio # 757 - The Voice of Mickey Mouse, Bret Iwan, and History of The Partners Statue - from the WDW Radio Archives To celebrate Mickey Mouse's birthday on November 18, I will take what Walt Disney said to heart and not lose sight of one thing... "that it was all started by a mouse." This week, we'll remember just that, as I have two segments from the WDW Radio that both involve Mickey Mouse. First, we'll venture into Magic Kingdom, and explore not an attraction, land, shop or show, but a single location. In fact, a single statute. In our DSI: Disney Scene Investigation, Jim Korkis and I look at the history and story behind the iconic Partners statue of Walt and Mickey. The legacy of and bond between Walt and Mickey goes far beyond one of simply artist and creation. In fact, Walt actually lent his voice to his most famous work. Over the years, Walt passed that torch to other men who became the voice of Mickey, and this week, I want to share my conversation with Bret Iwan, the man who eighty years after Mickey spoke his first words on screen, took over that role of a lifetime. We talk about his personal story of becoming the voice of Mickey, the legacy, and the future. What is your favorite personal memory of Mickey Mouse? Was it on TV? In a Disney Park? A piece of merchandise? Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. WDW Radio # 755 - Disney Legend Dave Smith Interview - From the WDW Radio Archives As part of our celebration of the Disney 100 year anniversary, it's only appropriate that this week I go way back into the Archives for an interview with Disney Legend Dave Smith, the founder of the Walt Disney Archives. 13 years ago, I was at work and literally had to lock myself in a closet at my office to interview Dave, who I had known for some time. His name is, and always will be, synonymous with Disney history. From founding the Walt Disney Archives in 1970, to authoring numerous books, Dave Smith's 40 year career with the company afforded him the opportunity to help preserve the magic that began with Walt himself. Dave and I discuss his career, including not just his role in the creation and legacy of the Archives, but its challenges, personal highlights, changes and his future, as he prepares to retire from this “temporary” job that lasted four decades. It's a fascinating conversation not just about the Archives, but the person who made it a reality, and was the guardian of Disney's most treasured memories. Dave sadly passed away in 2019 leaving behind a treasure trove of Disney lore for generations to come. If you could visit the Walt Disney Archives, what is the one item from Disney history you would like to see? Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. WDW Radio # 748 - Top Ten Spooky Places in Walt Disney World - From the WDW Radio Archives I am basically a 7 year old boy trapped in a... much older body... and I love Halloween. I love everything about it. The decorations, the scary movies, pumpkin spice everything, the weather, and even the Disney Parks. In fact, Walt Disney World, even outside the Not-So-Scary season, has its fair share of creepy places, spaces, and moments. So this week, we're going back to WDW Radio show # 246 from All Hallows Eve in 2011, to look around the resort, in the parks and closely at some attractions that have their creepy moments. So take your “loved ones” by the hand, as we look at our Ten Ten Spooky Places in Walt Disney World. What is YOUR favorite spooky spot in Walt Disney World? Why? WDW Radio # 746 - How Disneyland's Origins Have Impacted Walt Disney World - From the WDW Radio Archives With Walt Disney World's anniversary coming up on October 1... and this incredible sense of nostalgia and sentiment I have been feeling lately... it prompted my idea for this week's visit to the Archives, and this past week's LIVE show. Thank you for tuning in and being part of our WDW Radio LIVE show on Wed Sept. 20 where we boarded the Wayback Machine and took a trip down Walt Disney World's Memory Lane! We dove into some Disney nostalgia as we share memories of days gone by in Walt Disney World, and I shared a number of vintage photos from the parks... and me back in the 70's... and we all shared attractions, shows, resorts, and of course food that we remember and miss. You can watch the replay and be part of the community and conversation by going to WDWRadio.com/Video). And that got me to thinking about the origins of Walt Disney World... and inspirations. So this week, we're going back to Show # 179 from early 2010, because Walt Disney World traces much of its roots to the original Disneyland in California, and with Walt Disney World's anniversary coming up, it's only appropriate that we take a look at how some of Disneyland's origins have impacted Walt Disney World. Jim Korkis joined me to share some of the true stories behind the stories, as we start in Fantasyland with Cinderella Castle and look back at exactly how and where Disneyland began. And Jim shared not just stories that have never been told before, but Walt's own words that served as the proposal for what would be come Disneyland, and includes many amazing ideas that carried forward to become what we see today in Walt Disney World. Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. WDW Radio # 738 - Jim Korkis Tribute: History of the Hoop Dee Do Musical Revue - From the WDW Radio Archives A tribute to our friend Jim Korkis, who passed away on July 28, 2023... and timing being everything, a connection to my conversation with Hoop Dee Do performer Rob Lott on Show 737. Back on Show 376 in 2014, we looked at the history of the Hoop Dee Do Musical Revue, as we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the longest running show not just in Walt Disney World, but in all of American musical theater. We'll look back at how the show got started, why it almost never came to be, and why it remains so fun and popular. WDW Radio # 732 - Roger Rabbit in Walt Disney World: What Is, Was, and Might Have Been - From the WDW Radio Archives Some questions and discussion in the WDW Radio Clubhouse on Facebook this week prompted me to pull this show from the WDW Radio Archives, as Jim Korkis and I virtually visit Disney's Hollywood Studios on Show # 327 back in 2013, where we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." We recorded live at Disney's Hollywood Studios take a stroll through the Studios and look back at the movie's history, Roger's presence in the Studios and elsewhere around the parks (both current and extinct), what might have been, and what the future may hold for Roger Rabbit in the Disney Parks. For a much more important and meaningful reason, I also wanted to feature an episode with my longtime friend and guest on the show, Jim Korkis. Jim is not only one of the most knowledgable Disney historians and wonderful storyteller and author of dozens of books, but Jim is just a good man. I shared recently that after suffering his fall and long recovery in the hospital, as well as multiple heart bypasses, Jim has been diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 colon cancer that has also spread to his liver. I visited with Jim for a few hours this week, and he will be starting chemotherapy in the next few weeks. He is also very concerned about mounting bills, and I also wanted to share that a GoFundMe has been formed to help with home and medical expenses. I created an easy link directly to it at WDWRadio.com/HelpJim. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. You may have never met Jim, but he has been a friend since the very beginning, and is a member of our extended family. Anything you can do to help, whether it be through prayer, his GoFundMe, or even just spreading the word to others would be greatly appreciated Share your thoughts in the WDW Radio Clubhouse at WDWRadio.com/Clubhouse, or call the voicemail at 407-900-9391 (WDW1) and share your story on the show. WDW Radio # 729 - Lost Resorts of the Magic Kingdom: The Asian, Persian, and Venetian - From the WDW Radio Archives Since on our last episode of the show, we imagined Walt Disney World resort concepts that could be and we'd like to see, this week, we go back in time not just on the show to 2008 and Show # 91, but way back to a time before Walt Disney World had even opened. We'll metaphorically trek through the Florida swamps, as we take a close look at a Walt Disney World we never knew by exploring the Lost Resorts of the Magic Kingdom. The exotic Asian, Persian, and Venetian resorts would have been built along the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon (hence its name) as part of Phase One. We'll take a fun look back at what was supposed to be and might have been, with a little wondering and wishing as well.
