A special crossover lesson of Detentions and Dragons!!! Recently, Josh and Matt were invited by DM Mitch and DM Neal to be guests on the Dungeon Master's Block! The subject: using real world places as inspiration for your D&D creations. Our crossover lesson includes "the meat" (the discussion portion) of DM's block episode 162. For those of you unfamiliar with the DM's Block, it is the podcast where the hosts talk about the most important person in the game, the dungeon master. The only person capable of playing god, killing characters, and lowering the egos of all the player. In practice, this means you will hear interviews and discussions with some of the most influential people in the RPG community! If you already are a subscriber to their podcast, this will be fun but nothing new. If you haven't listened to the podcast, I hope this will inspire you to go check out all that the DM's Block has to offer! Every day, the Dread encroaches further on the Empire. The only thing standing in its way? The Phoenixes, immortal warriors given the power to live beyond death, to rise again more powerful than ever. But what if the Dread wielded the power to circumvent a Phoenix's rebirth? A power-hungry antagonist approaches and presents to you an impassioned speech. It speaks of a diabolic plot or perhaps disillusioned plan. You and your party disagree. You draw your weapons and ready a fighting stance. The lights go dim. The antagonist changes to its true form. A soundtrack with a dramatic score emphasizes the gravity of the situation. Is it the fate of world that will be decided by the outcome of this battle? Or is this simply one last fight for survival? Regardless, this is it you are the climatic finale. This is your chance to be hero. This is the final boss. On this lesson of Detentions and Dragons, Josh and Matt discuss final bosses for your school campaign. They discuss the importance of the final boss and their philosophy behind designing a final encounter with heroic moments or exciting opportunities for the player characters to be heroes one last time in a narrative that they helped create! The Final Boss mechanics they discuss are: 1. Destroy the Crystal 2. Artifact of Power 3. Puzzle Room Don't just design your boss fight to be tough. Design your boss fight to be heroic! Dungeon Master Mitch from the Dungeon Master's Block also submits a heroic boss mechanic as well: 4. Splatter Minions Josh and Matt have less tangents than usual but they do talk about wheels for a bit. Have the Sephiroth and Dr.Wily of D&D helped you defeat those pesky DM doldrums? Help them out by recommending Detentions and Dragons to a friend, teacher, or student. New listeners are the best way to help us grow as a podcast. Thanks again for all of your support!
