Send a textWhat would drive a 23-year-old to stage his own disappearance—and stay silent for 45 years? In this unforgettable conversation, Joey Pinz sits down with Steven Kubacki, PhD, whose 1978 disappearance on the frozen ice of Lake Michigan became one of America's most baffling mysteries. What the public never knew—until now—is that Steven's disappearance was intentional, ideological, and deeply personal.Steven reveals how a secret plan to “go underground” collided with an unexpected multidimensional experience that forever reshaped his understanding of consciousness, purpose, and human connection. From assuming a new identity to training in martial arts, confronting the dark side of power, and ultimately returning home claiming amnesia, Steven unpacks the psychological, spiritual, and ethical implications of radical action. Now, decades later, his book The Disappearance: Conspiracy, Revolution, Revelation serves as both an origin story and a warning—exploring certainty, extremism, social systems, and why meaning, connection, and structure matter more than ever in today's divided world. This episode challenges how we think about truth, identity, belief, and what it really takes to live authentically in chaotic times.
Brooke and Tyler join Adolin Kholin on the front lines in Azimir to recap his story in Wind and Truth. How has his relationship with Maya changed what we know about bonds, what does it truly mean to be Unoathed, and how will Adolin's promising philosophy develop in the second half of the Stormlight Archive. #AllSpoilers Support this podcast by becoming a Patron on Patreon Original music by David Gruwier. There are monsters in tabletop RPGs that exist to be fought, monsters that exist to be feared, and monsters that exist to make the Dungeon Master quietly whisper, "I hope you prepared spells with saving throws." Beholders fall squarely into that last category. This week on RPGBOT.Podcast, we're diving deep into Beholder-Kin — floating orbs of paranoia, laser violence, and architectural malpractice. From tiny gazers that exist solely to be annoying, to death tyrants that refuse to stay dead out of spite, we explore why beholders remain one of Dungeons & Dragons' most iconic, miserable, and tactically terrifying monsters. Along the way, we discuss dream-based reproduction, anti-magic cones, and why every beholder lair looks like it was designed to fail a building inspection on purpose. Show Notes Beholders are one of the oldest and most recognizable monsters in Dungeons & Dragons, and for good reason. They aren't just bags of hit points with flashy attacks — they're intelligent, paranoid, and cruel creatures that reshape both combat and storytelling the moment they appear in a campaign. In this episode, the hosts break down what defines beholders and their many variants, collectively known as Beholder-Kin, and why they're such effective villains across nearly every tier of play. The discussion starts with what makes beholders fundamentally different from other monsters. Their signature eye rays, combined with a central anti-magic eye, mean that fights against beholders rarely follow predictable patterns. Even experienced players are forced to react rather than execute clean plans. The randomness of eye rays creates chaos, but the creature's intelligence means that chaos is applied with intent — the rays may be random, but the targets absolutely are not. From there, the conversation expands into the many variants of Beholder-Kin found throughout D&D. Gazers, spectators, gauths, mind witnesses, beholder zombies, death kisses, and death tyrants all represent different expressions of the same alien biology. Each fills a distinct role, allowing Dungeon Masters to introduce beholder-themed encounters from the earliest levels all the way into high-tier play without losing flavor or threat. This flexibility is one of the reasons beholders remain so enduring in D&D design. Combat tactics play a major role in the episode, especially the importance of running beholders intelligently. A beholder that floats into melee range and trades bite attacks is a beholder being played incorrectly. These creatures thrive on distance, verticality, and environmental control. Their lairs are often carved with disintegration rays, filled with vertical shafts, traps, and contingency plans, and designed to punish creatures that rely on gravity. When played well, a beholder encounter feels less like a fair fight and more like surviving a hostile environment that actively hates you. The episode also dives into beholder lore and ecology, which somehow manages to be both fascinating and deeply unsettling. Earlier editions described grotesque physical reproduction, while modern D&D reframes beholder reproduction as a dream-based phenomenon where nightmares literally manifest new beholders into reality. This almost always results in immediate territorial violence, reinforcing the idea that beholders are incapable of peaceful coexistence — even with themselves. To balance the horror, the hosts also explore notable exceptions in D&D lore. Famous beholders like Xanathar embody tragic paranoia, while figures like Large Luigi — an omniscient beholder tavern owner in Spelljammer — prove that even reality-warping aberrations can choose hospitality over genocide. These examples highlight how beholders can serve not just as villains, but as unforgettable NPCs, information brokers, or narrative wild cards. The episode wraps by touching on player-facing options. While players can't normally play beholders, they can still interact with Beholder-Kin through warlock patrons, summoned spectators, or gazer familiars. Used carefully, these options let players brush up against beholder weirdness without completely breaking the game — though the temptation to do something irresponsible is always there. Key Takeaways Beholder-Kin work because they operate on multiple levels at once. Mechanically, they introduce chaos through randomized effects, but narratively they reward intelligent, ruthless play. A beholder encounter is never just about hit points — it's about positioning, preparation, and survival. These monsters scale exceptionally well across a campaign. From CR ½ gazers to CR 14 death tyrants, Beholder-Kin allow Dungeon Masters to introduce consistent themes without repeating the same fight. Each variant reinforces the core beholder identity while adding new tactical wrinkles. Lair design is not optional when using beholders. Their environments are an extension of their personality: vertical, hostile, and unapologetically unfair. A beholder fought on flat ground is missing half its threat. Finally, beholders remain iconic because they embody the strange heart of D&D. They're terrifying, absurd, overdesigned, and deeply committed to their own misery. Whether used as cosmic horror, dungeon boss, or omniscient bartender, Beholder-Kin remind us that sometimes the most memorable monsters are the ones that don't want to exist — but absolutely refuse to stop. Frank is joined by Joe, aka "Muscles of the Multiverse," to talk Marvel storytelling from the comics page to the MCU screen, then go all-in on Disney+'s Wonder Man after its eight-episode drop. Joe breaks down what he does on YouTube, why he started the Reading the Multiverse podcast, and how he approaches Marvel adaptation trends without expecting (or wanting) a 1-to-1 translation. From there, the episode shifts into a full Wonder Man discussion: why the show works as a character-first story, how it balances comedy with real stakes, and why the Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery dynamic ended up being the surprise engine of the season. The conversation also gets into Simon's anxiety and identity pressure, the Department of Damage Control angle, the "Doorman" detour episode, and what all of this might be setting up for mutants and the next big MCU era. Timestamps and Topics (major beats) 00:00 Intro and guest welcome: Joe "Muscles of the Multiverse" 00:30 Joe's content approach: MCU-to-comics explainers + Reading the Multiverse podcast 02:15 Quick MCU news: Ian McKellen "destroyed New Jersey" comment and what it could imply 05:10 Wonder Man first reactions: why it's landing better than expected 06:40 Character-driven Marvel: Simon's relatability, anxiety, and hiding "who you are" in Hollywood 09:00 Acting as the hook: standout performances, "meta" acting scenes, and why Trevor works now 18:10 Wonder Man powers explained: ionic energy basics and how the MCU might simplify the lore 20:10 Bigger MCU threads: Vision/Wanda possibilities, mutant framing, and Damage Control as a warning sign 30:45 Episode balance talk: comedy vs drama, and why the Doorman episode hits so hard 41:00 What's next for Simon: hero-by-proxy theory, team potential, and final scores 44:40 Disney+ marketing debate: why some shows feel under-pushed and what Marvel can fix 50:35 Recommendations: The Ultimates (Deniz Camp) and revisiting Schitt's Creek 53:10 Joe's upcoming work: Doctor Doom deep cuts, Fantastic Four read-through, and the editing grind Key Takeaways Wonder Man works because it treats Simon Williams like a person first, superhero second. The show's comedy lands because the stakes stay real in the background, especially with Damage Control looming. Trevor Slattery is fully recontextualized here: still funny, but also weirdly wise and essential to Simon's growth. The Doorman episode is a standout swing that doubles as a Hollywood critique and a superhero fatigue commentary. Joe's breakdown of Simon's ionic-energy comic history highlights why Marvel rarely does strict comic-to-screen adaptation. Damage Control and the "quota" vibe point toward a wider MCU theme: institutional fear of powered people. Mutant groundwork is starting to feel less like a sudden switch and more like a slow social shift in-world. Both hosts land at a 9/10, with the only "missing point" being more about feel than a specific flaw. Memorable Quotes "There's usually never a 1 to 1 adaptation." "I didn't know that I needed more Trevor Slattery in my life. But now I do." "Mephisto is not going to be in everything." "It felt like it was made to be for an episodic TV show." "You can't help but root for Simon." Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss the next review and interview. In this first interview of 2026, renowned astrologer Steve Judd joins Emilio Ortiz on the Just Tap In Podcast to delivers a grounded yet far-reaching breakdown of why this year marks a true point of no return for humanity. Together, we explore the rare and irreversible astrological shifts unfolding throughout 2026, including the long-term implications of Pluto's movement through Aquarius, the changing role of Saturn, and how collective structures, authority, technology, and social systems are being fundamentally reshaped. Steve explains why these planetary patterns signal the end of an old era—and why attempting to “go back” to previous ways of living, governing, or thinking is no longer possible.✦ Learn more about The Deep Dive Membership | https://iamemilioortiz.com/the-deep-d...This conversation goes beyond predictions, offering deep context on historical cycles, evolutionary thresholds, and humanity's initiation into a new phase of consciousness. We discuss how past astrological eras have coincided with major civilizational turning points, what makes 2026 uniquely different from previous transitions, and how individuals can align with these energies rather than resist them. Topics include collective awakening, decentralization, personal responsibility, the breakdown of outdated systems, and what it truly means to step forward with awareness as the future accelerates. If you're seeking clarity on what's unfolding now—and how to navigate 2026 with insight, stability, and purpose—this episode provides essential perspective.Steve has just opened EarlyBird tickets for Shifts Happen Too: The Next Transit
In this episode of Geek Freaks Headlines, we react to a clip of Ian McKellen talking about a stunt setup and joking that he “destroyed New Jersey” while filming Avengers: Doomsday. We unpack what “New Jersey” could mean inside the MCU, from Kamala Khan and the mutant breadcrumb in her series, to WandaVision and the Scarlet Witch family connection from the comics. Then we lay out an alternate theory that this is a different universe entirely, with Cyclops, Sentinels, and Trask Industries vibes, all while Doctor Doom level multiverse chaos could be colliding everything at once. We also touch on the Super Bowl trailer talk and what to realistically expect.00:00 Intro and the “destroyed New Jersey” quote setup00:08 Ian McKellen describes the stunt moment with lifted cars00:44 Theory 1: New Jersey as Kamala Khan and the MCU's mutant thread00:59 Theory 2: WandaVision connections and the Scarlet Witch angle01:18 Theory 3: A non-MCU universe with Cyclops, Sentinels, and Trask Industries01:35 Big-scale battle speculation with Doctor Doom and incursions01:56 Super Bowl trailer expectations and quick news roundup02:15 Wrap upThe “destroyed New Jersey” line gets walked back immediately, but it's still a fun clue to read into.If it's MCU New Jersey, Kamala Khan is the cleanest connection, especially with her mutant tease.WandaVision adds a second strong NJ anchor, and the Scarlet Witch family link could be a story shortcut if they want it.A multiverse angle may fit better than trying to establish too much mutant backstory inside one event movie. The alternate-universe theory points toward classic X-Men visuals: Trask Industries, Sentinels, and a battlefield built for Cyclops and Magneto.Doctor Doom and incursion-style stakes would make “leveling a whole region” feel like a natural escalation.“I did destroy New Jersey the other day. Oh, I perhaps should have said that.”“These were not special effects.”“As one does.”“My personal theory is that it's not actually the 616 Marvel or the MCU Marvel.”If you enjoyed this breakdown, subscribe to Geek Freaks Headlines, leave a review, and share the episode using #GeekFreaks. You ever watch an old interview and feel your stomach drop? At the time it aired, everyone laughed, everyone clapped, everyone moved on. But years later, knowing what we know now, it hits very different. Well, we want to talk about interviews that have aged like milk—moments that were waved off as jokes, charisma, or just a different era, but now read like warning flares. Sean Connery casually joking about hitting women. Cris Collinsworth bragging on air about chasing underage girls and nobody blinking. Tom Cruise grinning through interviews that feel less charming and now more unsettling. And then there are interviews that go from awkward to outright chilling: game show appearances from Randy Alcala, a serial killer with a smile; interviews with Chris Watts calmly playing the role of concerned husband while hiding literal bodies and skeletons in his proverbial closet. These aren't just cringy clips. They're reminders of how often evil doesn't look evil—it looks confident, funny, successful, and even safe. We break down the Super Mario Odyssey references, Yoshi's Island vibes, power-ups, pipes, Baby Mario/Baby Luigi, and whether the sequel is trying to cram Mario Galaxy + Odyssey + 3D World + Yoshi into one movie. Then we pivot into a nuclear gaming hot take: Backyard Baseball might not be as good as we remember… Plus: the wild world of retro game collecting, video game resale pricing, GameStop stories, and why nostalgia markets can get sketchy.Try Audible today — head to www.audibletrial.com/SchnabelStudios to start your 30-day free trial and get reading#nintendo #mario #supermario #mariomovie #mariotrailer #supermarioodyssey #yoshi #retrogaming #backyardbaseball #pablosanchez #gaming #nintendoswitch #podcastFollow Sketching Up:Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/sketchinguppod/Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/sketchinguppod/TikTok — https://www.tiktok.com/@sketchinguppodVideo edited by Chris SchnabelEpisode Produced by Chris Schnabel and Matt TornettaMusic by Kyle ScottSketching Up is a Schnabel Studios Production.Chapters:0:00 – Sketching Up intro + Mario Movie Sequel trailer reaction begins0:52 – Quick Mad Props shoutout (Rob Paulsen + Phil LaMarr)1:22 – HOT TAKE: Backyard Baseball isn't as great as we remember2:00 – Pablo Sanchez discourse: why he made Backyard Baseball legendary3:33 – Backyard Sports history + pro athlete additions (NHL era)6:40 – “You can't market Backyard Baseball without Pablo”8:10 – Comparing Backyard Baseball vs Mario Baseball / Nintendo sports games9:21 – Mario Movie Sequel trailer breakdown: Odyssey references + Yoshi reveal10:38 – Super Mario Odyssey desert world explained11:30 – Pipes, worlds, and why Mario logic never makes sense14:20 – Power-ups, fire suit, world-hopping concerns16:40 – Baby Mario/Baby Luigi + Yoshi's Island origin theory19:05 – Are they doing too much? We're talking RPGs again, this time in the company of Tanya Floaker (Mum Chums, Lo! Thy Dread Empire, Solstice, Be Seeing You, a|state). Along the way we'll get into Tanya's history with Moorcock and genre fiction, gaming in Thatcher's Scotland, first steps into game design and the pending launch of their new Kickstarter for The Thunder Perfect Mind, launching 1st February 2026. If you're interested in reading more, and even getting a hold of early drafts, check out Tanya's itch.io page. We'll also look into what Tanya would do around the gamification of Michael Moorcock's Multiverse, the 12-part comic series. I like it. I like it a lot. In addition, friend of the show and long-standing patron Randall Gatlin calls in to talk about all of this Moorcock malarkey and reveals what may possibly be the coolest interaction with Mike and Linda I've yet come across. In this episode, John Kaplan and John McMahon sit down with Jeremy Duggan, President of Multiverse, to talk about a tension every manager feels: how do you genuinely care about your people while still holding them accountable? They dig into a real story of a high-potential rep who wasn't thrilled about a big quota increase—and what it took to turn resistance into growth. Along the way, they break down how the right intent, honest conversations, and data-backed coaching can elevate performance, and they share the practical frameworks and tools that separate good managers from true leaders.Jeremy Duggan is the President of Multiverse and an advisor to high-growth technology companies navigating scale. This is the second half of our conversation with Micaiah Johnson continued from our last episode about necropolitics in Ned Beauman's 'Venomous Lumpsucker'. Micaiah is the author of the Ashtown duology, ‘The Space Between Worlds' and ‘Those Beyond the Wall', and we spoke to her about these books in episode 49, loosely on the topic of the Multiverse but more about the social and political aspects of a future dystopia divided by extreme inequality. Since that interview Micaiah has become Dr. Johnson, completing her PhD on those very subjects, and in this episode we focus on her PhD which is titled ‘The Unkilled: White Supremacy's Insidious Preservation of Black Lives'. Here we delve more deeply into social and political science to understand something about the dark underbelly of inequality, violence, and frankly evil which has permeated the foundations of our civilization, and continues to do so in a shockingly relevant moment as we see the eruption of American fascism today. This is a pretty intense conversation addressing some heavy topics, but Micaiah does so with the kind of bright passionate intelligence that it takes to sustain a long fight against the darkness. When Don Lemon appears in a church in St. Paul Minnesota—not to worship, but as part of a protest meant to disrupt and mock—it tells you something about the moment we're living in, because mockery has always come first. Before Christians were hunted by Nero and later wiped out under Diocletian, they were ridiculed—painted as dangerous, irrational, and unfit for public life. That same pattern is playing out today. While churches here are mocked, Christians in Nigeria are being hunted, burned out of their villages, and murdered for their faith—much like believers in Rome, punished not for crimes but for refusing to bow. And the pressure doesn't stop there. In the early Church, false teachers like Valentinus and Marcion didn't attack Christianity head-on; they redefined it, reshaping Jesus to fit the spirit of the age. Different century, same pattern: public scorn, real persecution, and a counterfeit gospel meant to replace the real one. The question is whether the Church recognizes the parallels and stands firm. Managing people and leading them are often treated as the same skill, but the gap between the two is where many organizations stall. In this replay episode, Jeremy Duggan joins the conversation to explore one of the most critical distinctions in business leadership: the difference between driving results and developing people. Drawing on real-world experience scaling multiple companies to billion-dollar valuations, Jeremy unpacks why great leaders prioritize belief, execution, and long-term growth over short-term outcomes, and why vision only works when it's paired with disciplined follow-through. Whether you're struggling to balance leadership with management or looking to elevate your team to extraordinary performance, this conversation reveals the principles that separate good managers from truly great leaders.Jeremy Duggan is the President of Multiverse and an advisor to high-growth technology companies navigating scale.
