In this episode I talk to Dan Corry, Chief Executive of NPC - a UK think tank and consultancy for the social sector. We discuss NPC's "Rethink, Rebuild" project, and how the pandemic might reshape philanthropy and civil society. Including:What does it mean to take a systems approach whens setting strategy, and why is it important? To what extent might erode individual organisational identity over time? Is that a problem, or a good thing? Is there too much competition and not enough collaboration in the charity sector? Why is this? Why are existing approaches to collaboration not always good at ensuring equity and fairness? What kind of challenges are there for traditional grantmakers when it comes to bringing communities and people with lived experience into decision making processes? Are there signs that funders are changing their behaviour during the current crisis? (Moving to unrestricted funding, trust-based grantmaking etc.) Is this likely to lead to longer-term changes? How can funders strike the right balance between taking a trust-based approach and not placing unnecessary reporting burdens on grantees, and having sufficient measurement to ensure they still know their funding is working? What role can data play in making philanthropy and grantmaking more effective and equitable? How do we enable and incentivise data sharing approaches? What will be required to convince local and central govt, and public sector bodies, of the merits of sharing their data with charities? Is too much of the emphasis in the current UK government “Levelling Up” agenda on physical infrastructure? How do we get government to think of social infrastructure alongside physical infrastructure?Do we need to “level up” the charity sector itself, in order to overcome geographic imbalances in where there is provision and resources? What is the role of government when it comes to philanthropy & civil society? E.g. To acknowledge it, to craft a narrative about the role it plays, to support it actively, to hold it to account etc?How can we get better understanding and clearer narratives about philanthropy/civil society in the minds of policymakers? Are there any practical barriers that are currently limiting the ability of civil society to “have a seat at the table” when it comes to policy discussions? What could we do to overcome these?Related Links:NPC's websiteNPC's Rethink, Rebuild resource hubDan's speech at the recent NPC Ignites conferenceThe piece I wrote for 360 Giving on why open data could help drive a better culture of philanthropyMy comment piece with Dan Fluskey of CIOF for Civil Society on "How Fundraising and Philanthropy Can Help 'Level Up'"-

Hey everyone,   We just wanted to inform you that due to some health issues that have come up, we will be taking a hiatus from the podcast throughout December and most likely throughout January. As of right now our intention is to return to releasing content in February of next year. We will be pausing our Patreon pledges for December and January since we cannot guarantee we will be able to release any content during this time. We want to thank everyone for their continued support for our shows, it really does mean so much to us.   Once our hiatus is over we will be picking up where Sharpened Quill and Rumble Squad left off. Sharpened Quill will be entering the city of Holimion to learn more about the gods' disappearances only to find themselves entangled in a terrible crime. Rumble Squad meanwhile will be learning more about the Thessun Kingdom as they try and learn how and why they were teleported all the way across the continent. We will also plan to release more NPC stories including that of the Loreena Buckton-Rein, Queen of the Vremor Empire. Thar Denholm, the illusionist trickster that Rumble Squad ran out of town, and Adriel Elervir, Orik's protege.   Thank you again for continuing to join us on our adventures and though for now we are taking a break from the podcast, we do look forward to seeing you all next time in the world of Austea.

Today, I speak with IFBB Pro Michelle Abramson, who turned 51 in September. She started this journey at 42 and fell in love with this sport. She's a professional certified registered nurse anesthetist in a high volume transplant hospital in Florida. She works full time, and is also a mom and wife. Her motivation is to help other women over 40 with a full plate to take care of themselves. She's also an ISSA certified master trainer in nutrition and bodybuilding . She's proven it's never too late to find fitness! Michelle tells us how persistence with posing practice helps her gain confidence when she is on stage. She was told many times she didn't have the right look for NPC/IFBB bikini, so she ended up competing in and turning pro in WBFF. But in doing so, she realized how much she loved the NPC and decided to prove everyone wrong and earn her IFBB pro card. She decided to become certified in training and nutrition because she had so many people asking her for help after she started competing. She puts a lot of effort into each plan and individualizes it for each person's circumstances. As a client of Celeste's, Michelle has felt like she had someone who truly cared about her well-being and relationship with food. She discovered macros and has really learned more about nutrition and what foods work well with her body, which has taught her to love the food she eats. Michelle is a great role model for all of us! Don't miss her interview! Topics covered include: -setting an example for fitness at any age -proving people wrong -focusing on health -working as a nurse and seeing the lack of health people experience -becoming certified in training and nutrition -working with Celeste -having a coach who believes in you -being a Master's athlete -competing in figure -helping others experience what she's experienced -staying true to yourself CONNECT WITH CELESTE: Website: http://www.celestial.fit Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/celestial_fit/ All Links: http://www.celestial.fit/links.html CONNECT WITH MICHELLE: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michellejabramson_ifbbpro/ TIME STAMPS [1:00] introductions [6:00] setting an example for other women her age [7:10] being told she wasn't a good fit for NPC bikini [10:00] focusing on health [13:55] inspiration behind becoming a trainer [20:10] working with Celeste [26:01] having a coach who believes in you [30:10] being intentional about recovery [32:30] competing history and journey [39:00] future plans [40:30] training to change her physique [45:00] how bodybuilding has affected her family CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE FREE FOOD RELATIONSHIP COACHING SERIES CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE FREE POST SHOW BLUES COACHING SERIES LEARN MORE AND APPLY FOR MY 5 WEEK FOOD RELATIONSHIP HEALING & DISCOVERY COACHING PROGRAM FOR OTHER FREE RESOURCES, LIVE EVENTS, AND WAYS TO WORK WITH CELESTE CLICK HERE

What do you need to make a town or city for your RPG campaign? A place for your PCs to hang their hats and rest their weary feet? Stores and taverns for them to unload their loot and pick up new quests? How about an economy and some way the town makes money? Who runs it and how do they keep the peace? Who tries to intervene when the party gets up to PC shenanigans? What about surprises? Is that beggar actually a shapeshifted silver dragon? Is there a secret wizard school operating out of a simple library? Are kobold tinkerers secretly keeping everything running in steam tunnels and sewers beneath the street? We have warned you not to get caught up in building towns and cities before, but this time a listener asked what needs to be in them when you have to do it. Thorin, Tony and Dave came up with 19 tips to help you do it in pretty much any RPG. 2:00 A listener question: What do you need to have in your town or city when you build your own? 3:00 Town Tip 1: DM Tony's big warning: Don't overwhelm your players with dozens of quests and NPC backstory details at once 6:00 Town Tip 2: Understand how towns and cities are different 8:00 Town Tip 3: Are your players going to look in every house and steal every treasure box, or are they more story-focused? That determines how much detail to put in 9:00 Town Tips 4-7: The 4 things every town needs based on DM Thorin's City of Greyhawk campaign How does the town survive economically? (Farming? Local mines? Trading hub?) Who runs it and how do they police it? (Who tries to arrest the PCs when they cause trouble?) Shops, lodging, services and taverns (Who do the players interact with?) Secrets and surprises (A good town has layers, like an Ogre.) 15:00 Town Tip 8: Kitbashing! How DM Dave turned Against the Cult of the Reptile Gods into Slavers Bay 17:00 Town Tip 9: There needs to be attachment to the town, or the PCs won't care what happens in it (or, just throw a lot of money at them) 19:00 Town Tip 10: Don't be afraid to embellish a location to make it more interesting or fantastical 23:00 Town Tip 11: Not every important location needs to appear in the first few adventures — 10 Forward doesn't appear in Star Trek TNG until the second season 25:00 Town Tip 12: If you make your own town, you get to put in the things that you want to play with 27:00 Town Tip 13: Know what needs to be in your town to set it up for the first adventure 30:00 Town Tip 14: Don't hand them 100 quest hooks when they come into town (although, a beggar selling a map to the secrets of the city could be fun) 31:00 Town Tip 15: The town that begins your campaign start the whole story, and that's more important than a town they're passing through in the middle of the campaign 32:00 Town Tip 16: Let the players have a hand in building out the town by expanding on the things they show investment in (and how DM Tony's player became the caretaker of a bunch of kobolds) 37:00 Town Tip 17: A town is a collection of the people in it 38:00 Town Tip 18: Don't make the town so interconnected that the players have no room to work 39:00 Town Tip 19: How tough do you make the guards? It depends 45:00 Final thoughts Support this podcast

Confessions of a Bikini Pro

Today, I speak with IFBB Pro Holly Larsen, a 51-year-old mother who didn't start competing until she was 48. She started her lifestyle coaching business when she experienced a layoff during COVID. Holly loves the lifestyle and journey to getting on stage but has had to work extra hard to overcome her discomfort being on stage. She found bodybuilding when she went to a women's retreat and set the goal to get into the best shape of her life. Someone in her group suggested a bikini show and she ran with it! She thought she would be “one-and-done”, but she missed having a reason to train and eat well. That's when she decided to start working with Team Elite Physique again.   Holly and Celeste share stories about competing during COVID and the lengths promoters and the NPC and IFBB went to make the experience the best they could for competitors. Because there are no Pro Masters shows in Colorado where she lives, she decided to make her Pro debut at the Puerto Rico Pro, which was held in the Bahamas. We spend this episode in a free-form idea-jamming discussion on ways to re-imagine certain "logistically problematic" elements of the default Rifts Earth setting. Most if these ideas are rooted in NPC's struggles with presenting the story of the world in his games in a way that fits his mind's eye view of the world. Give us a listen for some of our ideas on ways to unleash your imaginations, then drop in to our Discord and talk about your own ideas. Drop us a line! Horror Gaming for Halloween: How We Squeeze Scares Out of Players Around the RPG Table

It's the scary season around our gaming tables, and that brings up one of the age-old questions about DMing: Can you reasonably expect to scare adult roleplaying gamers? Maybe, maybe not. But what you can definitely do is remove the illusion that they're in control. Undermine that false comfort that their characters will be OK. Whether you're threatening their hit points, sanity or character attachments, if you can shake the players' sense of security, then you can scare them — and that's what Halloween gaming is all about. In this episode, Thorin, Tony and Dave talk about the things they've done to try to bring some terror to their tables and times they've felt the fear for their own characters' lives and worse. 1:00 Can you expect to scare adult players at the RPG table, or is this a lost cause? 2:00 DM Dave's Curse of Strahd Dinner … in full costume with a DM's assistant playing butler and running NPCs 7:00 Give the players something to be afraid of: Unbalance the threat level, attack character sanity and get them out of their comfort zones 10:00 Upgrading Castle Ravenloft to make the final showdown with Strahd deadlier and scarier 14:00 The PCs must be vulnerable: Why super characters undermine horror gaming 17:00 It's a long campaign: Don't be afraid to let the players laugh and have some fun in your horror game, it just makes things scarier when the tension ratchets back up 24:00 Attachments are key to RPG horror: NPC allies and friends give the players something to lose 27:00 Pirates of the Caribbean is not a horror movie — atmosphere and threat build terror, not zombies, skeletons and undead pirates 29:00 Let the characters feel comfortable behind the armor and weapons they have, then introduce a threat that cannot be handled that way 33:00 Horror gaming is unfair, and you need players who are willing to go with that without complaining 37:00 Is a deathtrap like Tomb of Horrors really horror gaming or just a hardcore puzzle? 50:00 Keep power creep on your side 54:00 Some of the most horrifying games we've been in 59:00 The one mechanic you cannot allow in your game if you want to maintain a horror vibe 65:00 Final thoughts on horror gaming for Halloween Support this podcast
