“CAS gets stronger as tech gets better. The market's expanding, not shrinking.” Big 4 TransparencyBy Dominic Piscopo, CPAFor CPA TrendlinesIn this episode of Big 4 Transparency, Matthew May, former co-founder of Acuity and now CAS Leader at Sorren, pulls back the curtain on one of the most significant private equity-driven rollups in the accounting profession. Speaking with host Dominic Piscopo, May details how Acuity, alongside other firms, became part of a growing national platform backed by DFW Capital, and why he believes Client Accounting Services (CAS) will soon eclipse audit. MORE Dominic Piscopo MORE Pay & Compensation MORE CAS The seeds of the Sorren platform were planted in a BDO Alliance roundtable where six firms fantasized about joining forces. That vision crystallized when DFW Capital, with a thesis to invest $100M in the space, entered the picture. From there, May and his partners at Acuity ran a rigorous process, engaging investment bankers to evaluate 250 potential paths, leading to 11 indications of interest (IOIs), seven in-person meetings, and five formal offers. The decision to join Sorren wasn't about cashing out - it was about autonomy, cultural fit, and the chance to help shape a future-focused firm from the ground up.

"I had to learn to be a political animal."Big 4 TransparencyBy Dominic Piscopo, CPAFor CPA TrendlinesIn a candid conversation on the Big 4 Transparency show, former CohnReznick CEO Frank Longobardi offers a sweeping view of the accounting industry's transformation, advocating for private equity investment as a necessary catalyst for modernization. Speaking with host Dominic Piscopo, Longobardi explains how traditional partnership structures have often hindered strategic decision-making, especially in large firms where a board of ten or more can slow progress. “You've got people on the board at different ages, different objectives, and different disciplines,” he says. “A smaller circle with clear strategic goals allows partners to do what they do best: serve clients and lead people.” MORE Dominic Piscopo MORE Pay & Compensation Longobardi also highlights how the profession's talent model is out of step with the expectations of today's workforce. “You hire a top student and tell them they'll make partner in 16 years,” he notes. “Meanwhile, their friends in finance are seeing returns now—when they're raising kids and buying houses.” Private equity, Longobardi argues, can address this by offering earlier equity opportunities and aligning incentives across generations. “We need to make accounting a profession of choice again,” he says, pointing to declining enrollment in accounting programs and the deterrent of the fifth-year requirement for CPA licensure.

Drama, delight and double bagels! It can only mean one thing... the French Open Round 1 catch up at Roland Garros with Joel and Kim. It's been a Brit bonanza in Paris, with 6 of 7 sailing into Round 2 – including Emma Raducanu, who now faces defending champ Iga Swiatek in a blockbuster showdown. Cameron Norrie also pulled off the upset of the round, outlasting Medvedev in five, while Jack Draper kept cool to seal a confident 4-set win.Elsewhere, big names like Sinner, Alcaraz, Sabalenka, Gauff, and Djokovic (fresh off his 100th career title!) breezed through – but it wasn't all smooth sailing for the Americans, with Taylor Fritz and Emma Navarro crashing out early. Plus, Vika Azarenka dished out a ruthless double bagel, Caroline Garcia said her final singles farewell at her home Slam, and Roland Garros paid an emotional tribute to the King of Clay himself, Rafael Nadal, with the Big 4 reuniting to honour his legacy. In October of 2024, McDonald's sued four of the world's largest meat producers – Tyson, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef Packing – for allegedly conspiring to inflate the price of beef by creating artificial scarcity in the market. This is not the first time McDonald's has sued these meat producers, and it is not the first time these meat producers have been sued. Over 200 cases have been brought by restaurants, retailers, wholesalers, and ranchers. Some are still pending and others have been settled - with high payouts but no admission of wrongdoing. In this week's episode of Art of Supply, Kelly Barner reviews the case McDonald's is making against the Big 4: The price setting power associated with controlling 80 percent of the U.S. beef market The complexity associated with trying to track cost and price data in a highly concentrated market Why being the largest beef buyer in the world isn't enough to tip the scales in McDonald's favor Links: Kelly Barner on LinkedIn Art of Supply LinkedIn newsletter Art of Supply on AOP Subscribe to This Week in Procurement

Have you ever caught yourself spiraling in thoughts that seem to go absolutely nowhere? You know what I mean—those moments when your brain is running a marathon, but you're stuck at the starting line, feeling overwhelmed and unsure. One minute, you're thinking about something small, like forgetting to send an email, and the next thing you know, you've convinced yourself that your entire week is ruined. This, my friends, is what we call "mind drama." When we typically talk about drama, we often picture people stirring up trouble—gossiping, making mountains out of molehills, or dragging everyone into some kind of unnecessary chaos. That's external drama, and while it's easy to spot, mind drama is a little sneakier. Mind drama happens in your own head—it's the endless spiral of thoughts and emotions that can make small issues feel overwhelming. It feels real because it's in your brain, but it's just your mind spinning stories without solving anything. This week, I'm going to discuss identifying and dealing with mind drama as a working mom and how to untangle mind drama and take back control. You can read the full show notes HERE
Happy Thanksgiving! Jason and Frank recorded a fresh episode of the podcast as the long weekend in the USA gets going. After some talk about the football schedule and Frank's favourites parts of the holiday, the guys got into some talk about the toughest decisions that each team at the upcoming 4 Nations Faceoff is facing. This is the final podcast before the teams are going to be officially announced so they went through all four teams and talked about some of the bubble players that could end up making the cut. They started with Team USA where the goaltending seems locked in but there are a handful of open spots when it comes to both the forwards and defense. Players like Tage Thompson, Zach Werenski, and Chris Krieder are some of the names sparking up the most debate. For Team Canada, they discussed who the fourth-line centre should be with names like John Tavares, Connor Bedard, Nick Suzuki and Mark Schiefele all being possibilities. On the blueline, they debated the chances that someone like Evan Bouchard has of being on the team. The goaltending is obviously a soft spot for Canada and Jason and Frank gave their thoughts on who they could end up going with between the pipes. After going through the projected rosters for Finland and Sweden, they brought in Tyler Yaremchuk for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about the playoff picture at the quarter way mark of the season and the trade rumours swirling around the New York Rangers. 4:40 - USA's 4 Nations Roster12:15 - Canada's 4 Nations Roster28:55 - Sweden's 4 Nations Roster39:35 - Fill in the Blank (Rangers, Bedard, playoff teams)Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Think about how often you've set a goal, like starting a new exercise routine or trying to eat healthier, only to find yourself slipping back into old patterns. It can feel frustrating, like you're stuck in a loop, always wanting to improve but somehow ending up in the same place. This is something most of us experience at one time or another, and it's not about lacking the motivation to change—it's about understanding the natural resistance that comes with trying to shift our habits. So why is change so hard? The answer lies in how our brains are designed. But the good news is that there are ways to outsmart your brain so that you can make any change you've decided on. This week, I'm going to discuss the brain's efficiency mode, why some habits are tougher to break, and using your brain to overcome resistance. You can read the full show notes HERE
In this deeply moving and insightful episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, host Chris Schembra engages in a heartfelt conversation with Sandeep Angra, Chief Information and Technology Officer (CIO/CTO) of the 40,000 person strong company, Unifi, the largest airport ground-handling company in North America and Europe. With over three decades of IT leadership experience spanning various industries, Sandeep's professional achievements are significant, but today's conversation takes us beyond his impressive resume. This episode focuses on the themes of gratitude, humility, and spirituality, offering listeners a rare glimpse into the personal beliefs and life lessons that have shaped Sandeep's journey. He reflects on his upbringing in a small village in India, where his parents made enormous sacrifices to provide him with the opportunity to pursue education—a theme that resonates deeply throughout the episode. Sandeep's father, a schoolteacher who walked 15 kilometers to work to save money for his children's tuition, and his mother, a primary school teacher, instilled in him values of hard work, humility, and gratitude that continue to guide him today.Sandeep's personal philosophy centers on the belief that gratitude is the cornerstone of success, both in life and leadership. He speaks candidly about the importance of acknowledging the people who have supported us along the way—whether they are still with us or not—and how expressing gratitude strengthens both personal and professional relationships. Throughout the conversation, Sandeep delves into his spiritual beliefs, sharing his thoughts on karma, incarnation, and the interconnectedness of life, drawing on influences from both Eastern philosophy and scientific thought, such as Einstein's reflections on the nature of reality.Listeners are invited to consider three essential questions: Who am I? Why am I here? How can I help others? These questions form the foundation of Sandeep's life philosophy, one that calls us to live with purpose, to give selflessly, and to remain humble regardless of external achievements. The episode is not just a reflection on leadership in business, but also on the leadership of the heart—how empathy, kindness, and serving others can lead to both personal fulfillment and professional success. Sandeep shares stories from his career in global IT leadership, highlighting the ways in which gratitude and humility have not only helped him navigate challenges but have also allowed him to build high-performing teams, implement transformative technology projects, and align corporate objectives with human values.Chris and Sandeep also explore the power of giving without expectation—a recurring theme that underscores the entire conversation. In a world that often values material success and self-promotion, Sandeep reminds us that true fulfillment comes from giving generously, whether through acts of kindness, mentorship, or simply acknowledging the contributions of others.By the end of the episode, listeners will walk away with not just actionable leadership advice, but a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of how gratitude can enrich both their personal and professional lives. Sandeep's wisdom reminds us that the journey of giving, whether to our families, our communities, or even to strangers, is a difficult but immensely rewarding one—one that ultimately defines our legacy.Whether you're an executive, a leader, or simply someone seeking more meaning in life, this episode offers valuable insights into how we can all lead with humility, harness the power of gratitude, and create a more compassionate, connected world.
