Electronic fetal monitoring is one of the most common interventions in hospital birth, but it's also one of the least understood. In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Dekker talks with board-certified OB-GYN Dr. Jennifer Lincoln about what continuous electronic fetal monitoring actually does, what the research says, and why it became such a routine part of labor care in the first place. With recent media attention shining a spotlight on this technology, they break down the history, the evidence, and the real-world pressures that shape how it's used today. Learn why continuous monitoring can increase Cesarean rates in low-risk births, when it may be helpful in higher-risk situations, and how it can influence movement, comfort, and decision-making during labor. Dr. Lincoln also shares practical ways to ask questions, understand what terms like "reassuring" and "indeterminate" mean, and partner with your care team so you can make informed choices without feeling powerless or pressured. (02:26) Dr. Jennifer Lincoln's updates: doctors' strike, leadership, and writing The Birth Book (10:09) Why electronic fetal monitoring is in the spotlight and what it actually measures (13:40) The history of fetal monitoring and what it was designed to prevent (17:37) The biggest drawbacks: false positives, rising C-section rates, and medical-legal pressures (23:18) How continuous monitoring can affect movement, comfort, and labor experience (26:28) Artifact, wireless monitors, and challenges with accuracy (28:27) Intermittent monitoring: what it is and how it works (30:11) When continuous monitoring may be more beneficial in higher-risk situations (37:53) Understanding "reassuring," "indeterminate," and "non-reassuring" patterns (39:46) What care teams may try before recommending a cesarean (45:15) Questions parents can ask when concerns arise about the fetal heart rate (48:03) Continuous monitoring during VBAC and navigating autonomy and policy (51:01) Why these conversations should happen before labor and how to advocate collaboratively Resources Hear about the new research on home birth with Dr. Dekker on Dr. Lincoln's "Let's Talk about Birth" podcast: drjenniferlincoln.substack.com/p/announcing-my-new-podcast Get a copy of Dr. Lincoln's book, The Birth Book: An OB-GYN's Guide to Demystifying Labor and Delivery: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/785889/the-birth-book-by-dr-jennifer-lincoln/ Learn more about Three for Freedom: threeforfreedom.com/ For more information about Evidence Based Birth® and a crash course on evidence based care, visit www.ebbirth.com. Jim Lanzone is the CEO of Yahoo. It's basically impossible to sum up Yahoo's story over the last 25 years, but the short version is that once upon a time, Yahoo paid Google to run the search box on its website, and everything immediately went sideways. Jim calls it Yahoo's original sin. But after a long series of mergers, spinouts, and a hot, weird minute as part of Verizon Yahoo is once again an independent, privately held company — and it's growing. But can Yahoo really take market share from Google? For years, the aggregator model was simple: curate the best journalism from thousands of publishers and send audiences their way. Now that contract is being rewritten, and Yahoo News is one of the most interesting places to watch it happen. In this episode of Newsroom Robots, host Nikita Roy speaks with Kat Downs Mulder, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Yahoo News, about how the platform is layering AI across every surface of a product that reaches an estimated 180 million people in the U.S. alone each month. Kat previously spent more than 14 years at The Washington Post as chief product officer and managing editor before taking on the challenge of modernizing one of the internet's original news destinations. The conversation explores Yahoo's acquisition of Artifact, the AI news app built by Instagram's co-founders, which gave the platform a new recommendation engine that prioritizes time spent reading over clicks. It also digs into Yahoo Scout, the company's new AI answer engine that synthesizes information with rich citations and visual context, and an AI-powered daily audio digest designed to turn personalized news into a listening habit. Each of these products makes Yahoo more useful to its audience, but each also changes the relationship between Yahoo and the publishers whose journalism powers the platform. When an answer engine can deliver what a user needs without a click-through, when an audio digest summarizes a story so well the article never gets opened, and when personalization makes the aggregator the destination instead of the pass-through, the old economics stop working for publishers. Kat is candid that the compensation models haven't been figured out yet, noting that Yahoo is working with the Microsoft Publisher Content Marketplace to develop new frameworks, but that the industry is still writing those rules in real time. She makes a strong case for how Yahoo is approaching this differently, from how Scout prominently surfaces publishers to the rev-share model they operate, and why she believes the quality flywheel they are building actually rewards better journalism. Kat argues that original, distinctive journalism will become more valuable in an AI world because AI agents will seek out what is unique. This episode covers: 03:20 — Why Yahoo acquired Artifact and how it shifted recommendation algorithms 06:20 — The shift from click-based metrics to deeper engagement signals such as session time and retention 08:50 — Inside Yahoo Scout, Yahoo's new AI answer engine built to support publishers and the open web 12:40 — The changing economics of news as AI platforms begin generating answers instead of sending traffic 17:40 — Yahoo's personalized AI-generated audio news digest and why multimodal news experiences matter 22:00 — How Yahoo's editorial and AI teams collaborate on quality control at scale 31:00 — How AI is transforming newsroom product development and prototyping 36:10 — The tension between personalization and journalism's civic responsibility 40:00 — What smaller newsrooms can learn from their AI product playbookSign up for the Newsroom Robots newsletter for episode summaries and insights from host Nikita Roy. For decades, seal impressions of a biblical king appeared on the antiquities market—but none had been found in a controlled excavation. That changed with one remarkable discovery in Jerusalem. Alfonso Cuaron's "Children of Men" (2006) is enjoying a renaissance not only for its aesthetic qualities, but also its prescience. In the 2000s, overpopulation was still being discussed, and immigration wasn't the major topic. A post-racial America was declared, but ultimately dismissed. Taking place in 2027, "Children of Men" depicts refugees, fascism and domestic repression, a fertility crisis, Islam-as-rebellion, and a post-racial world in 2027, where one's place of birth is the great hierarchy. In ArtiFact #66, filmmaker Alex Sheremet and critic Keith Jackewicz tackle Alfonso Cuaron and his artistic philosophy. In 1980, archaeologist Adam Zertal began excavating Mount Ebal, near the ancient city of Shechem—modern-day Nablusin the West Bank. After decades of little success by earlier researchers, Zertal's team uncovered a large stone structure that took years to fully reveal.Remarkably, the structure matches the biblical instructions for an altar: built from uncut field stones, with no iron tools, and accessed by a ramp rather than steps. Explore the archaeological details and the significance of this remarkable find!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DONATE: https://evidence4faith.org/give/WEBSITE: https://evidence4faith.org/NEWSLETTER: http://eepurl.com/hpazV5BOOKINGS: https://evidence4faith.org/bookings/CONTACT: Evidence 4 Faith, 349 Knights Ave Kewaskum WI 53040 , info@evidence4faith.orgMy goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. - Colossians 2:2-3CREDITS: Developed & Hosted by Michael Lane. Discovered in 2008 overlooking the Elah Valley, this broken shard of pottery may hold one of the earliest Hebrew texts ever found. Written in ink over 3,000 years ago, its 70 preserved letters come from a time many believed writing didn't yet exist in ancient Israel. What this text says—and when it was written—raises big questions about early literacy, biblical history, and the world of the kings of Israel.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DONATE: https://evidence4faith.org/give/WEBSITE: https://evidence4faith.org/NEWSLETTER: http://eepurl.com/hpazV5BOOKINGS: https://evidence4faith.org/bookings/CONTACT: Evidence 4 Faith, 349 Knights Ave Kewaskum WI 53040 , info@evidence4faith.orgMy goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. - Colossians 2:2-3CREDITS: Developed & Hosted by Michael Lane. Drew Perkins welcomes Carole Geneix, Director of Teaching and Learning at Washington International School, to the podcast to discuss the evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence in education. As schools grapple with the "AI revolution," Geneix argues that instead of fearing these tools, educators must integrate them into content-rich, inquiry-based frameworks to deepen student thinking. Have some feedback you'd like to share? You can email us at drew@thoughtstretchers.org. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it and leave a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you're listening. Links & Resources Mentioned In This Episode Carole highlights that the "AI fear" often stems from a misunderstanding of what these tools do. Drawing from her extensive background in the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Project Zero thinking routines, she explains that AI shouldn't be viewed as a way to bypass thinking, but as a "material" and "process" for students to interact with. By shifting the focus from the final product to the cognitive journey, teachers can ensure that inquiry remains at the heart of the classroom. The conversation dives into the practicalities of implementation, from the nuances of "See, Think, Wonder" routines to the necessity of teaching students how to prompt and critique AI outputs. They also discuss the global differences in education systems, comparing the centralized French model to the localized, inquiry-driven approach of international schools, and why a "knowledge-rich" curriculum is the essential foundation for effective AI use. Finally, they explore the shifting nature of assessment. Carole shares how schools can move away from traditional grading toward "reflection boxes" and process-oriented evaluations that prioritize human agency, ethics, and critical analysis in a world where information is increasingly automated. Timestamped Episode Timeline [00:00] Introduction of Carole Geneix – Director of Teaching and Learning at Washington International School and global education expert. [08:15] Global Education Perspectives – Comparing French, Korean, and U.S. educational philosophies and the role of inquiry. [14:30] Defining Inquiry-Based Learning – Why inquiry is a mindset, not just a set of activities, and its roots in the IB framework. [19:45] Project Zero Thinking Routines – How routines like "See, Think, Wonder" foster equity and give every student a voice. [25:50] The "AI Roadmap" for Schools – Using the Map of Understanding to determine where AI fits into the learning process. [33:10] AI as Artifact, Process, and Material – Reconceptualizing AI as a tool for reflection and creation rather than just an answer-generator. [41:15] Policy and Implementation – Why banning AI is a mistake and how to use tools like Flint AI for safe, monitored student engagement. [52:40] The Future of Assessment – Shifting from "what you know" to "how you think" in the age of generative AI. [01:05:10] Professional Development – The long-term commitment required to shift school culture toward inquiry-driven AI integration. [01:14:00] Closing Remarks – Where to find Carole's work and stay updated on AI in pedagogy.
Daniel chapter 5 and the handwriting on the wall have long been criticized as legend. But an ancient clay tablet tells a different story. Discovered in the mid-1800s in modern-day Iraq and dating to 549–486 BC, the Nabonidus Chronicle records key events surrounding the fall of Babylon. Purchased by the British Museum in 1879 and later translated by Sir Henry Rawlinson, this fragment contains historical details that closely align with the account of King Belshazzar in the Book of Daniel. Was Goliath just a myth? For nearly 3,000 years, there was no physical evidence—until 2005. During excavations at the ancient Philistine city of Gath, archaeologists uncovered a pottery shard bearing a name that appears to read “Goliath” in ancient script. Found in the very city the Bible says Goliath lived, this discovery marks the first time his name appears in the archaeological record. Discovered in 1879 at the base of the Ésagila temple, the Cyrus Cylinder records the rise of Cyrus, king of Persia, and the removal of King Nabonidus of the Chaldeans. It also notes that Nabonidus was absent when Babylon fell—leaving his son Belshazzar as co-regent, a detail echoed in Daniel chapter 5. For our Season 16 finale, we saved the darkest artifact of them all.The Conjure Chest is said to contain ritual tools, curses, and spiritual attachments so powerful that even opening it may invite something into your life you can't get rid of. Those who've come into contact with the chest report illness, nightmares, sudden misfortune, and a lingering sense of being watched. Was it used in conjure magic and ritual practices? Is it a misunderstood spiritual object?Or is the fear surrounding it exactly what gives it power? In this finale, we examine the origins, the alleged victims, the skeptical explanations, and the belief-based theories behind one of the most controversial haunted objects ever discussed on Is This Real? This season explored cursed and haunted artifacts from around the world — and it all ends here.
The King Ahaz Bulla is a rare artifact linked to Ahaz, a real king of Judah and descendant of King David—one of the most evil rulers in the land. Discovered in 1995, this clay seal once secured an official papyrus document and still shows the marks of the string that tied it shut. From a corrupt king to undeniable evidence, this tiny artifact speaks volumes.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DONATE: https://evidence4faith.org/give/ WEBSITE: https://evidence4faith.org/NEWSLETTER: http://eepurl.com/hpazV5BOOKINGS: https://evidence4faith.org/bookings/CONTACT: Evidence 4 Faith, 349 Knights Ave Kewaskum WI 53040 , info@evidence4faith.orgMy goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. - Colossians 2:2-3CREDITS: Developed & Hosted by Michael Lane. Ruling Judah over 50 years, Uzziah—also known as Azariah—was a godly king, a brilliant military strategist, and a ruler whose fame reached Egypt. But his final resting place was a mystery… until 1931, when Professor E.L. Sukenik discovered a burial plaque at the Russian Convent of the Ascension on Jerusalem's Mount of Olives. Undocumented and astonishing, the inscription offers a rare glimpse into the life—and death—of one of Judah's greatest kings.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DONATE: https://evidence4faith.org/give/ WEBSITE: https://evidence4faith.org/NEWSLETTER: http://eepurl.com/hpazV5BOOKINGS: https://evidence4faith.org/bookings/CONTACT: Evidence 4 Faith, 349 Knights Ave Kewaskum WI 53040 , info@evidence4faith.orgMy goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. - Colossians 2:2-3CREDITS: Developed & Hosted by Michael Lane. Most people know the names Ahab and Jezebel—but many don't realize these infamous figures were real rulers of ancient Israel. Ahab's existence has been confirmed through major archaeological finds, including his own signet ring discovered in 1964.But Jezebel? She remained a historical shadow—until that same excavation revealed an opal seal many believe belonged to the notorious queen herself. Designed to hang from a necklace, the seal even shows the break where a cord once ran through it.Join Michael Lane in the E4F studio as he walks us through this unique artifact!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DONATE: https://evidence4faith.org/give/ WEBSITE: https://evidence4faith.org/NEWSLETTER: http://eepurl.com/hpazV5BOOKINGS: https://evidence4faith.org/bookings/CONTACT: Evidence 4 Faith, 349 Knights Ave Kewaskum WI 53040 , info@evidence4faith.orgMy goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. - Colossians 2:2-3CREDITS: Developed & Hosted by Michael Lane. An archaeological breakthrough was announced on December 15, 2024—the discovery of the Frankfurt Silver Inscription, a tiny silver phylactery packed with big implications. Inside is an early, almost word-for-word quote from Paul's letter to the Philippians—shattering the popular claim that Jesus wasn't worshiped as the Son of God until centuries later. This artifact pushes Christian history far earlier than critics suggest and offers thrilling confirmation of early New Testament belief. Join us as we explore how this remarkable find is reshaping conversations in archaeology and early Christian studies.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DONATE: https://evidence4faith.org/give/ WEBSITE: https://evidence4faith.org/NEWSLETTER: http://eepurl.com/hpazV5BOOKINGS: https://evidence4faith.org/bookings/CONTACT: Evidence 4 Faith, 349 Knights Ave Kewaskum WI 53040 , info@evidence4faith.orgMy goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. - Colossians 2:2-3CREDITS: Developed & Hosted by Michael Lane. Peoples & Things host, Lee Vinsel, chats with Verena Halsmeyer, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Vienna, about her recent, award-winning book, Managing Growth in Miniature: Solow's Model as an Artifact. The book explores the history of the way economists think about growth, including the role of technological change in it. It focuses on the period between the 1930s and 1960s, tracing the development of the famed 'Solow growth model,' one of the central mathematical models in postwar economics. The pair also talk about the intersections between the history of science and the history of economics and how we all can learn to focus on practices - that is, what people do - rather than on ideas alone. Neal Stephenson—legendary sci-fi author who coined "metaverse" in his 1992 novel Snow Crash—and Rebecca Barkin, co-founder of Lamina1, return to the AI XR Podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about building a decentralized creator economy, launching their dystopian AI world-building project Artifact, and why blockchain might finally free creators from Big Tech's chokehold. Joined by Charlie, Ted, and Rony, the discussion spans Neal's lost Magic Leap project, the resurrection of the open metaverse dream, and how decentralized platforms could flip Hollywood's power structure on its head.Rebecca details Lamina1's journey from blockchain currency for the open metaverse to Spaces, a multimedia creator platform built on Ethereum that allows IP owners to retain control, set royalties, and build direct relationships with fans. Think YouTube meets Discord, but on decentralized rails. The goal isn't socialism—it's a creative meritocracy where artists get equity in platforms they help build, instead of just one-time payouts while Netflix captures all the value.Neal unpacks Artifact, Lamina1's first creative test case: a post-Singularity world where 12 competing mega-AIs fight over energy, copper, water, and GPUs while humans live in the interstices. Co-created with Weta Workshop using AI tools like World Labs' marble splats, the project invites fans to co-create lore, not just consume it. It's a living experiment in collaborative IP development—and proof that small teams with AI amplifiers can build Grand Theft Auto-scale worlds.Guest HighlightsNeal Stephenson coined "metaverse" in Snow Crash; former Magic Leap creative lead with lost IP still trapped at the company.Rebecca Barkin pivoted Lamina1 from metaverse currency to Spaces: a decentralized platform for multimedia creators retaining IP rights and earning equity.Artifact launches as Lamina1's test case—collaborative world-building in a dystopian post-AI Singularity where fans shape the narrative.Built on Ethereum with Consensus Network backing; uses blockchain to solve micro-transaction volatility and give creators sustainable economics.Signed Bob's Burgers team (Ghosted Media) and other Hollywood refugees seeking autonomy from studio gatekeepers.News HighlightsValve launches PC cube + wireless Index headset—sub-$1000 system to compete with Xbox/PlayStation and revive PCVR market, but will enthusiasts bite?Meta adds real-time computer vision to AI glasses—Ray-Ban smart glasses gain live AI interpretation, pushing toward inflection point for wearables.Google Maps integrates Gemini AI—natural language directions and real-world context awareness transform navigation into conversational copilot.11 Labs launches voice marketplace—Michael Caine licenses voice cloning; Matthew McConaughey invests but won't sell his own likeness.Disney announces AI user-generated content strategy—Bob Iger teases platforms for fans to create with Disney IP, following Lego's remix culture playbook.Big thanks to our sponsor Zappar. When Jacob entered Egypt, Pharaoh placed him in a position of power and trust. As a royal official, he would have carried an Egyptian scarab seal—an emblem of authority used to mark and authenticate documents. Join us as we uncover how this ancient artifact connects the biblical account of Jacob with the power and influence of Egypt's mighty civilization.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DONATE: https://evidence4faith.org/give/ WEBSITE: https://evidence4faith.org/NEWSLETTER: http://eepurl.com/hpazV5BOOKINGS: https://evidence4faith.org/bookings/CONTACT: Evidence 4 Faith, 349 Knights Ave Kewaskum WI 53040 , info@evidence4faith.orgMy goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. - Colossians 2:2-3CREDITS: Developed & Hosted by Michael Lane. Cory is our guest host for the Blizzard Watch Podcast this week and, spoilers, that means there's Heroes of the Storm news again. The PTR opened up for people to test Player Housing again this week, but it was already down again by the time they recorded the podcast. Liz was thrilled with this chance to collect more data though, because her house in the alpha is currently haunted. In other WoW news, the trading post means a ton of new goodies -- perhaps literally, if carrots fit your definition of goodies. Also, getting some of the Artifact appearances in Legion is busted.Beyond WoW, there was a new Hearthstone expansion this week to discuss, plus a new cinematic for Overwatch, which got us feeling a little nostalgic and sentimental. And yes, Heroes of the Storm. We couldn't have Cory on without a little dose of hopium.Plus, we have a contest running on Bluesky and Mastodon where you can enter to win a free key for an Epic edition of Midnight. All you have to do is tell us which housing plot where you'd recommend our realtor take her well-earned vacation (and also, please follow us because that will let us DM you if you win). We'll draw the winners on Monday. If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. Sci-fi titan Neal Stephenson, whose Snow Crash coined the term "metaverse" and Cryptonomicon sketched the contours of crypto, joins Friederike to talk about his foray into championing empowering creators with direct micropayments and IP sovereignty, without the data-exploiting enclosures of Web2, with Lamina1 as its co-founder. Neal unpacks his detached craft plausible worlds that inadvertently blueprint reality while cautioning against Web3's traps: Criminal stigma, abysmal UX alienating normies, and risks of becoming surveillance superhighways or bank shiny toys. Spotlighting Lamina 1's launch with "Artifact" (a Weta-forged sci-fi game), he envisions success as creative output flourishing where blockchain fades to the background.
