Today's episode starts with a rambling overview of how things are around here in the beeyard from hive beetles to one year mark from the WNC floods. Then a discussion of a YouTube interview with the legendary Vermont beekeeper for 50 years, Michael Palmer who says being "near row crops" is seriously hurting his beekeeping in a severe new way. Then a related article I happened to find on how neonics make varroa destructor much more destructive. I encourage you to listen to the two part video interview presented by Inside The Hive TV, a YouTube channel with some very interesting interviews. Links to the material discussed: Part One of the YouTube featured on the Inside the Hive TV channel. Part Two is here. Part Three is just a short about Palmer talking about the book he is still trying to write. And OH I hope he does! Here's the article I quote from in Entomology Today. Keep heart dear beekeepers. The apiary is self-sustaining (not needing to buy/catch replacement bees since 2010) and produces honey and nucs most every year.
This week's episode is all about Reading. We will go through the entire process from the moment light hits the retina (50-100ms) to formulating speech (600ms or so). That is, either speaking out loud or silently speaking while reading, a phenomena called subvocalization. We do this when reading to the self. Either way, we speak while reading. We will compare so called normal readers, the Autistic phenotype, and dyslexia, and at times the odd contrasts of the Autistic phenotype AND dyslexia. Lots of neurobiology, measurement instruments, brain waves (oscillations, frequencies), however, I will hopefully provide easy to understand analogies. The entire reading process is covered.Daylight Computer Companyuse "autism" for $50 off athttps://buy.daylightcomputer.com/autismChroma Light Devicesuse "autism" for 10% discount athttps://getchroma.co/?ref=autismCognity AI for Autistic Social Skillsuse "autism" for 10% discount athttps://thecognity.com00:00 - Overview of reading process and neurobiology03:28 - Visual processing in V1 (primary visual cortex), V2-V4 (secondary visual cortex)4:42 - Neuroplasticity of Blind using V1-V4 for Braille07:17 - Neural oscillations (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gamma)10:07 - Visual word form area (VWFA) recognizes patterns, begins sequencing letters & recognizes the word, Example: "d-o-g" & 'd' not 'b', 'o' not 'c,' 'g' not 'p.'13:01 - Phonological processing in temporal-parietal cortex15:54 - Fractional anisotropy (FA) & Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and arcuate fasciculus; Myelination, Water Flow, Garden Hose example18:06 - Detailed discussion of orthographic processing begins (VWFA's role in recognizing visual word forms)21:26 - Detailed discussion of cerebellum's role in eye movements begins (Purkinje cells and saccades)24:07 - Detailed discussion of spelling difficulties begins (orthographic processing challenges in autism/dyslexia)27:41 - Detailed discussion of semantic integration begins (delays in dyslexia, inferior frontal gyrus)30:55 - Detailed discussion of orthographic confusion begins (e.g., "except" vs. "expert")33:30 - Detailed discussion of phonological processing begins (temporal-parietal cortex mapping words to sounds)34:18 - Cerebellum mentioned regarding tongue movements (Purkinje cells refine timing for speech)36:10 - Subvocalization in silent reading37:07 - Oscillations in VWFA for autistic phenotype; Comprehension lags in Autism due to delayed N40039:19 Daylight Computer Company (and Daylight Kids !), use "autism" for $50 discount41:40 Chroma Light Devices, use "autism" for 10% discount44:52 Reviews/Ratings, Contact InfoX: https://x.com/rps47586YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGxEzLKXkjppo3nqmpXpzuAemail: info.fromthespectrum@gmail.com

rWotD Episode 3071: Landscape painting Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Tuesday, 30 September 2025, is Landscape painting.Landscape painting, also known as landscape art, is the depiction in painting of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, rivers, trees, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view—with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. In other works, landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition. Detailed landscapes as a distinct subject are not found in all artistic traditions, and develop when there is already a sophisticated tradition of representing other subjects. Two main traditions spring from Western painting and Chinese art, going back well over a thousand years in both cases. The recognition of a spiritual element in landscape art is present from its beginnings in East Asian art, drawing on Daoism and other philosophical traditions, but in the West only becomes explicit with Romanticism.Landscape views in art may be entirely imaginary, or copied from reality with varying degrees of accuracy. If the primary purpose of a picture is to depict an actual, specific place, especially including buildings prominently, it is called a topographical view. Such views, extremely common as prints in the West, are often seen as inferior to fine art landscapes, although the distinction is not always meaningful; similar prejudices existed in Chinese art, where literati painting usually depicted imaginary views, while professional artists painted real views. The word "landscape" entered the modern English language as landskip (variously spelt), an anglicization of the Dutch landschap, around the start of the 17th century, purely as a term for works of art, with its first use as a word for a painting in 1598. Within a few decades it was used to describe vistas in poetry, and eventually as a term for real views. However, the cognate term landscaef or landskipe for a cleared patch of land had existed in Old English, though it is not recorded from Middle English. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:55 UTC on Tuesday, 30 September 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Landscape painting on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ayanda.

PREVIEW:: America First: Roosevelt vs. Lindbergh in the Shadow of War Hardcover – September 24, 2024 by H. W. Brands (Author) This source focuses on Charles Lindbergh's perspective on Germany and his strong critiques of Great Britain's foreign policy leading up to the war during the critical years of 1939, 1940, and 1941. 1927 LINDBERGH Context and Key Figures: The conflict detailed in the book covers the critical years 1939, 1940, and 1941, culminating in the Japanese attack. Lindbergh was the "hero of the age," while Franklin D. Roosevelt, running for a third term, was a "genius at political success." Lindbergh's Perspective on Germany: Lindbergh held a "stubborn admiration for German culture," believing "the Germans knew how to do things right." He was "puzzled and dismayed" by the political changes in Germany, including the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party. He did not know what to make of the "strange and alarming turn" German politics had taken, or the "apparent obvious embrace by the German people" of these new movements. Lindbergh's Critique of Britain: Lindbergh was "very discouraged" about Britain's approach to world affairs, believing Britain's "day was behind it" and its "great time was behind it." He felt Britain had allowed itself to fall into "complacency and apathy." He criticized Britain and France for establishing an "unrealistic postwar regime" at the Paris Peace Conferenceof 1919. They imposed unrealistic restrictions on Germany but then "refused to enforce them afterward." He suspected the British were attempting to "continue to cruise on the momentum" of their 19th-century empire. Lindbergh was puzzled by British policy, specifically that they made demands on Germany ("You must do this") while making promises (to Czechoslovakia and then Poland) that they could not fulfill. He was afraid that Hitler would "call their bluff" and Europe would be at war. Lindbergh strongly suspected that if war broke out, the British would look to the United States to "bail them out," repeating the pattern of World War I.

LePage sits down with Matt Middendorp, Director of ESOP Consulting at Vision Point Capital, to demystify the world of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) for architects and design firm owners.
