Guskiewicz, Ph.D., at 2 p.m. on Sept. 29 at Wharton Center's Cobb Great Hall. Presidential investitures are typically held in a leader's first year in office to publicly and formally “vest” them with the authority of the office and acknowledge, introduce and celebrate the new leader. Investitures also represent continuity, connecting a university's present with its past and allowing new leaders an opportunity to express their vision for the institution's future. Guskiewicz, a noted academic leader and neuroscientist, embarked on a 52-stop listening and learning tour of MSU's colleges and major administrative units during the first several months of his presidency. These visits underscored for the president the student-focused, passionately public work that happens at MSU every day. Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., with nearly seven months at the helm of the presidency, is helping to write the next chapter of MSU's storied history — one that continues to be student-centered, with a focus on inclusivity, accessibility and global impact as a leading public research university. Guskiewicz highlighted several initiatives during September 29th's investiture ceremony he and university leadership plan to roll out in the coming weeks and months, including efforts to increase accessibility to an MSU degree, meeting the needs of a 21st-century workforce, and the second iteration of the university's Global Impact Initiative that was approved by the Board of Trustees in June. To increase access and reduce financial barriers to a quality, accessible, world-class education, Guskiewicz announced a new merit-based scholarship named after MSU's first president and first lady, Joseph R. and Sarah L. Williams. The scholarship will fund tuition, food and housing, and an education abroad or other experiential education opportunity for undergraduates. Guskiewicz also announced the establishment of the Native American Tuition Advantage program, an expansion of the current Spartan Tuition Advantage program. Students from anywhere in the United States or Canada who meet tribal affiliation criteria will qualify for in-state tuition levels and potentially the Spartan Tuition Advantage program. Also, from Oct. 21-23, Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., and a group of faculty and administrators are set to go out on the inaugural Spartan Bus Tour. Intending to visit locations throughout the western Lower Peninsula of Michigan to build community connections and strengthen MSU's commitment to education, research, outreach and extension.

Investing for positive impact has been on my radar right from the outset and to help me explore this crucial space I could think of no one better than my former colleague Giles Gunesekera. Giles is the CEO of the Global Impact Initiative which happens to be the only Australian Company and one of only 36 companies acknowledged globally by the United Nations as a UN LEAD Company for their work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Giles received an Outstanding Alumnus award from Oxford, is a Senior Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australia and holds numerous not for profit directorships. Giles Gunesekera is CEO of the Global Impact Initiative and he’s been a valuable mentor for me in the world of impact investing; so it was about time I invited him to be a guest on Good Future. I’m your host John Treadgold, and this is the podcast where I ask the big questions about sustainable business, the new economy and how your spending & investment decisions, no matter how big or small, can have an impact. Giles has built a range of really innovative investment structures that have supported charities for women and girls, built hospitals and funded affordable housing. He digs into his upbringing and the influence of his parents, as well as the time he spent at Oxford that completely changed the way he sees finance, and led directly to him setting up his business. In this episode we did a bare-bones breakdown of ‘impact investing’. I pushed Giles to avoid the jargon and help an audience beyond those working in finance, to understand how we can direct our money to not only make a profit, but to also have a positive social impact. There’s clearly a shift happening right now, whether it be super funds whose members are demanding they invest with long-term sustainability in mind, or with companies realising it takes more than big salaries to attract the best millennial talent, we want a sense of purpose too. The Initiative works with a variety of organisations to create impact investments, seeking both a positive financial return and a positive social or environmental impact. The business creates bespoke investment solutions that map the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Global Impact Initiative is currently in the process of developing 10 different impact investing mandates totalling over $2bn AUD. Giles has over 20 years’ experience building and development teams, businesses and distribution strategies for global enterprises.
