With America In Major News Views &  Headlines Changing Everyday, This Book is Particularly Intriguing Now!!In 1974 John Egerton published his seminal work, The Americanization of Dixie. Pulitzer Prize-winner Cynthia Tucker and award-winning author Frye Gaillard carry Egerton's thesis forward in The Southernization of America, a compelling series of linked essays considering the role of the South in shaping America's current political and cultural landscape. They dive deeper, examining the morphing of the Southern strategy of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan into the Republican Party of today. They find hope in the South too, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that might ultimately lead the nation on the path to redemption. Tucker and Gaillard bring a multiracial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and democracy under siege.Frye Gaillard is an award-winning journalist with over 30 published works on Southern history and culture, including Watermelon Wine; Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement that Changed America; The Books That Mattered: A Reader's Memoir; Journey to the Wilderness: War, Memory, and a Southern Family's Civil War Letters; Go South to Freedom; A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s, Our Decade of Hope, Possibility, and Innocence Lost; and The Slave Who Went to Congress. A Hard Rain was selected as one of NPR's Best Books of 2018. Writer-in-residence at the University of South Alabama, he is also John Egerton Scholar in Residence at the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi. He is the winner of the Clarence Cason Award for Nonfiction Writing, the Lillian Smith Book Award, and the Eugene Current-Garcia Award For Distinction in Literary Scholarship. In 2019, Gaillard was awarded the Alabama Governor's Arts Award for his contributions to literature.Cynthia Tucker is a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist who has spent most of her career in journalism, having previously worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as an editorial page editor and as a Washington-based political columnist. She has also been featured as a political commentator on television and radio. Tucker's work as a journalist has been celebrated by the National Association of Black Journalists (who inducted her into its hall of fame), Harvard University, and the Alabama Humanities Foundation. She spent three years as a visiting professor at the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and is currently the journalist-in-residence at the University of South Alabama.© 2026 Building Abundant Success!!2026 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Located in the heart of the Indian metropolis of Mumbai, Dharavi is one of the world's most densely populated slums; home to nearly 1 million people. Made famous by the film "Slumdog Millionaire", Dharavi is set to be transformed by a major redevelopment plan that will build skyscrapers, sanitation systems, parks, schools and hospitals. But this massive project requires the relocation of part of its population and is causing concern among the thousands of residents who have lived and worked in Dharavi for several generations.

What happens when a child from a Manila slum becomes the leader of the very organization that once sponsored him? In this episode of God on the Move, Fred Dungganon shares how growing up in extreme poverty in Welfareville, losing his father, and surviving through odd jobs shaped his life—along with his early involvement in a spiritist cult marked by fear, emptiness, and syncretism. He tells how encountering the gospel at a youth camp led him back to Jesus, into discipleship, and ultimately into ministry with Dawn for the Poor, an OMF-founded work serving the urban poor through scholarships, holistic programs, and house churches. Fred recounts becoming executive director at 26, navigating a near-closure in 2020 that turned into renewed support during the pandemic, and casting vision for “Project 25” as Dawn expands to more communities across the Philippines.

On this show we feature the late writer and activist Mike Davis, who dabbled as an “urban historian,” who took on geography, politics, economics, sociology and literature. His focus was the dislocation and separation brought on by capitalist society: people from land, work from ownership, individuals from each other, all in the service of profit. And he showed how this dislocation resulted in climate, environmental, and social disasters. His solution was communities connecting together and to the land. Mike Davis was a true intellectual visionary, who was down to get into the streets and walk his talk. I met Mike Davis as a graduate student when he taught at UCLA in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. At the time, he was writing his incendiary and prophetic shadowing of the social and environmental calamities that the city of Los Angeles, and our world at large, continues to face. We begin with an introduction of Mike Davis and will come back to a question and answer by Vijay Prashad, an Indian Marxist historian and commentator. This is from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst History Department Feinberg Lecture Series from 2020. We also feature a lecture by Mike Davis about his book Planet of Slums, which investigates the increasing inequality of the urban world. According to the U.N., more than one billion people now live in extreme poverty in mega-cities facing environmental and social collapse from perpetual and worsening climate disruptions. Mike Davis explores the meaning and the future of this radically unequal and unstable urban world. The Planet of Slums lecture comes from a talk given at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, in 2015. Delhi artist Manmouji once dreamed of becoming a cricketer. But growing up in the slums and struggling with limited resources, circumstances didn't allow that dream to take shape. Instead, Manmouji picked up a brush and colours and began transforming the lifeless walls around him. He filled the walls of these settlements with vibrant shades of hope and imagination, creating street art, but with a purpose. His paintings tell the stories of the dreams these children carry.

Kibera is a vast urban landscape characterized by extreme density and a lack of formal infrastructure, where basic survival requires constant navigation of a "city within a city." Most residents live in small, single-room structures made of mud, timber, and corrugated iron sheets, often measuring no more than 144 square feet. Because there is no internal plumbing, families must walk to communal points to purchase water by the jerrycan, a task that is both physically demanding and disproportionately expensive compared to formal neighborhoods. Sanitation remains a primary concern, as narrow, unpaved alleyways often double as makeshift drainage systems, making the settlement particularly vulnerable to floods and waterborne diseases during Kenya's rainy seasons. The social and economic atmosphere of the settlement is defined by the "kadogo" economy, where goods and services are sold in the smallest possible quantities to accommodate low daily wages. Life here is lived largely in public; the streets are a constant blur of activity, from charcoal vendors and open-air barbershops to children playing in the limited space between shanties. While formal electricity is scarce, a web of informal wires provides power to many homes, fueling a surprisingly high rate of mobile phone connectivity. This digital access is vital, as residents rely heavily on mobile money to pay for everything from school fees to clean water, highlighting a unique intersection of extreme poverty and modern technology. Despite these harsh conditions, Kibera is anchored by a powerful sense of community and localized governance that fills the gaps left by the state. Neighbors look out for one another through informal savings groups and community-led security initiatives, creating a social safety net that is essential for survival. There is a palpable energy driven by youth-led organizations, art collectives, and sports clubs that strive to change the narrative of the slum from one of despair to one of potential. While the physical environment remains a challenge of mud and rusted metal, the human spirit within Kibera is remarkably resilient, fostering a culture of innovation and mutual support that defines its unique identity within Nairobi. ~ #travel #nomad #documentary #kenya #podcast #africa #travelblogger

Christian Carmona grew up in Medellín's infamous Barrio Antioquia—an area known for prostitution, gambling, and later, cocaine. In this episode, Christian tells the inside story of a Colombian cocaine dynasty that quietly expanded from Medellín to Miami… and even Portland, Oregon. Raised “Americanized” in the suburbs, Christian didn't learn the truth about his father's criminal enterprise until federal agents came crashing down in 1991—taking both of his parents at once. From cartel-era Miami strategies (stash houses, mules, low-profile living) to family-wide trafficking ties and the chaos of the early 90s, Christian lays out how the business really worked behind the scenes. The story gets even wilder when Christian later gets pulled back into the orbit of his father's old associates—working at a bank where traffickers allegedly used safety deposit boxes to stash cash and kilos. A setup, a sting, and years of court delays later, Christian describes spending nearly four years incarcerated while prosecutors tried to force him to cooperate. This is a raw conversation about family, loyalty, survival, and redemption—plus how Christian found faith and wrote his book Zeal while locked up.

In Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos, authorities have demolished Makoko - the country's biggest informal waterfront settlement. The Lagos state government says some structures built beneath high-tension power lines pose a serious safety risk. But the scale of demolitions has left thousands of residents displaced and families say they were given little warning and no clear relocation plan. And in Sierra Leone, President Julius Maada Bio has announced January 18th as Remembrance Day for victims of the civil war. Between 1991 and 2002 the west African country's military alongside UN peacekeeping troops fought against rebel groups, resulting in the killing of thousands of people and displacement of more than half of Sierra Leone's population at the time.Presenter: Nkechi Ogbonna Producers: Bella Twine, Keikantse Shumba, Chiamaka Dike and Ayuba Iliya Technical Producer: David Nzau Senior Producer: Charles Gitonga Editors: Samuel Murunga and Maryam Abdalla
