New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller addressed the Republican Convention of 1964, denouncing the extremists that appeared to be taking over his party. Only to be drowned out by boos and shouts by delegates backing that year's nominee Barry Goldwater. Rockefeller's all but forgotten speech is the opening scene in journalist David Corn's new book, American Psychosis: A historical investigation on how the Republican Party went crazy. Corn draws a somewhat straight line from that moment, when a Goldwater movement rife with followers of the John Birch Society and other extremist groups took over the GOP, to the rise of Donald Trump more than a half century later, culminating in the events of January 6th when MAGA extremists stormed the US Capitol and threatened the lives of lawmakers and the sitting Vice President. Corn's book raises the question that hung over the events of 1964, can the Republican Party be saved? And if it can't, can American Democracy be saved? Matt Lewis is a senior columnist for The Daily Beast. His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, GQ, The Washington Post and he's a regular contributor on MSNBC, CNN, PBS NewsHour, HBO's “Real Time with Bill Maher,” and CBS News' “Face The Nation.” He also dissects the day's issues in conversations with other thinkers, authors, and newsmakers on his podcast Matt Lewis and the News. In this conversation, we cover a lot of ground. We discuss Matt's book Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Went from the Party of Reagan to the Party of Trump; what it was like to work for Tucker Carlson; how his views of Sarah Palin have evolved; whether we can find our way out of this cold civil war; plus we go pretty deep into method acting and hair care!

The ouster of Liz Cheney from her House leadership position for refusing to accept Trump’s Big Election Lie is a frightening turning point in an already chaotic, political year. The GOP has abandoned all pretense of caring about democracy and has shackled itself to an insane, conspiracy driven, illiberal movement that threatens to destroy the party. This is all happening amidst an emboldened Trump who has triumphantly and aggressively shaped the party in his own image; purging any all dissent. The Young Turk’s Cenk Uygur joins Mea Culpa to help Michael predict what will happen next.
In less than four decades the Republican party went from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump. How did that happen?Gerald Seib, the executive Washington editor for the Wall Street Journal, says it’s not too surprising at all.“There was always a kind of populist national sentiment working up from the grassroots, especially in the Republican Party. Donald Trump walked through an open door in 2016,” he says. Seib was a guest on the “Utah Politics” podcast. He charts the factors that led to the presidency of Donald Trump in his new book “We Should Have Seen it Coming. From Reagan to Trump - A Front Row Seat to a Political Revolution.”Seib also moderated a Republican debate during the 2016 GOP primary process. He says the preparation to head up such a high-profile event is unlike anything he’s ever faced in his long career. “You have to be prepared for sixty-five different eventualities, knowing about three-quarters of what you’re cramming into your head is going to be useless,” he says. “The last thing people want to see when they watch a debate is the moderator. Your job is to ask questions and get out of the way, but you also have to keep control of the thing. And that’s a very tricky balance,” Sieb added. With Michael Cohen's confession, Trump seems likely to take the GOP down yet another notch. Where will Pelosi lead the Dems? Michael discusses the situation with Matt Lewis. Lewis is a Senior Columnist at The Daily Beast, a CNN political commentator, and the author of Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Went from the Party of Reagan to the Party of Trump.
My guest today on RIGHT IN DC is Matt K. Lewis, senior columnist for the Daily Beast, a CNN political commentator and author of the book, “Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Went from the Party of Reagan to the Party of Trump” (Hachette Books, 2016). Our discussion includes: • Why he thinks his book is ahead of the curve • The main thesis of the book • His autopsy on the midterms • Why he cares about the Republican party • The dangers of policing his own side • Why he wants to save conservatism • Why 9/11 awakened/created many new conservatives, like the Tea Party, but they lacked the intellectual knowledge of the conservative movement • Pamela Geller as an example of the zealotry of the new convert • The October 2013 shutdown of the government by Sen. Ted Cruz supported by the Tea Party • How and why President Reagan was rooted in conservative philosophy, was a deep knowledgeable thinker, yet why he purposely wanted to be underestimated • Why politicians no longer cultivate friendships with people on the other side, include the press that cover them • How Reagan attempted to co-opt the press • The conservative movement's strange fascination with celebrities • Practical solutions/insights for people who care about the conservative movement • How much should conservatives try to change culture? Being a conservative writer versus a writer with conservative tendencies • Why the liberal media don’t even realize how biased they are How liberals say even more outrageous statements in the green room at TV studios because they assume everyone around them agrees • Why the news media have the short-term thinking problem of beating the competition rather than trying to save the reputation of their industry More about Matt: Matt K. Lewis is a senior columnist for The Daily Beast, and his work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, GQ, The Washington Post, The Week, Roll Call, Politico, The Telegraph, The Independent, and The Guardian. He previously served as senior contributor for The Daily Caller, and before that, as a columnist for AOL’s Politics Daily. He records a weekly podcast, "Matt Lewis and the News." In 2011, Business Insider listed him as one of the 50 "Pundits You Need To Pay Attention To," and in 2012 the American Conservative Union honored Matt as their CPAC "Blogger of the Year." Another week in Trump's America. Republicans continue to ram a white, pasty-faced sycophant on to the court despite the fact that he most likely has a gambling problem and may be a teenage wannabe rapist. What do we expect from the party who ran a child molester for the Senate and has a con man traitor for its standard bearer? As long as they can roll back regulations, kick people off health care and funnel more money into the hands of the oligarchy. Political commentator Matt K. Lewis warns his fellow conservatives that their movement is going off the rails in Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Went from the Party of Reagan to the Party of Trump (Hachette, 2016). Lewis chafes at the populist, protectionist and nativist elements that have come to dominate the Republican Party, and argues that conservatives need to reacquaint themselves with the intellectual foundation of their own movement. He argues that many have overlooked how Ronald Reagan’s success flowed from his intellectual grounding and cosmopolitan nature. Outlandish conservative media figures who peddle outrageous ideas solely to make a buck attract Lewis’ ire, as he charges them with dumbing down their shared ideology. Lewis also tracks how an influx of southerners and evangelicals into the Republican Party created challenges that pulled the party away from traditional conservatism. Overall, Lewis presents an unvarnished yet constructive critique designed to create a conservative movement that can thrive in the twenty-first century. Bill Scher is a Contributing Editor for POLITICO Magazine. He has provided political commentary on CNN, NPR and MSNBC. He has been published in The New York Times, The New Republic, and The New York Daily News among other publications. He is author of Wait! Don’t Move to Canada, published by Rodale in 2006.
