Q&A #26 with Greg Sykes
Q&A #1 with Greg Sykes
Greg Sykes is a curious and rather eclectic teacher candidate currently attending Western University. He has a passion for music composition/performance, working through creative projects, and engaging in all things related to the lifelong pursuit of learning. Formally, Greg has managed to achieve both a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at St. Francis Xavier University, but intends on continuing his education through informal, yet intentional, self-directed learning upon graduating from Western. Greg has also had the opportunity of spending the last four summers playing piano in the beautiful town of Dawson City, Yukon, and he intends on returning for one last hurrah this upcoming season. Greg has been interning at OEMConnect through Digital Human Library. He has spent his time recording the Mentors about why they volunteer to support Mentees, and why they believe mentorship is a source of professional learning. Greg was recently on the live broadcast of OnEdMentors during voicEd Radio's 3rd Anniversary Radiothon:https://voiced.ca/podcast_episode_post/oem-connect-radiothon-version/. Greg has shared one of his own, original songs as part of his personal playlist during his guest appearance on the #P3.
This episode features futur music teacher, Greg Sykes who I connected with though (OEMConnect) https://www.digitalhumanlibrary.org/onedmentors-connect/. We start off the episode with a little Stomping’ Tom (head straight to 3:22 for that!) I chat a lot with greg about jumping into creating content online (risks & rewards) as he is looking at starting his own Youtube channel. We play a couple games that also lead to conversations about grades, assessment in a music classroom, flexible seating and using twitter as a new teacher! You can follow him over at: @gregthinks_
Arkansas Baptist News Associate Editor Caleb Yarbrough chats with Arkansas Baptist State Convention President Greg Sykes, senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Russellville, about everything from his role as president of the state convention, the current battle over bringing a casino to Pope County (the county where his church is located), the importance of lay leaders to Syke's personal story of how he shifted paths from a possible career in journalism to full-time pastoral ministry. Sykes also shares about his time as a sports reporter at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, during the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the Razorbacks' men's basketball team's 1994 National Championship season. The conversation digs into some of Sykes' personal approaches to ministry and gives Arkansas Baptists a better picture of one of the state's leaders. Enjoy!

Cole Richards and Jason Peters served as executive editors for a new project from The Voice of the Martyrs: I Am N: Inspiring Stories of Christians Facing Islamic Extremists. This week on VOM Radio they share with us some of the powerful stories of these believers and their faithfulness, and the themes of their stories—Sacrifice, Courage, Joy, Perseverance, Forgiveness and Faithfulness—that inspire each of us in our own walk with Christ. Habila forgave Boko Haram fighters that shot him in the face. A Syrian Christian father continues to serve Christ in spite of his son being kidnapped by radical Muslims. Jason and Cole give us a peak behind the scenes at the creation of the I Am N project, and worship leader Greg Sykes talks about writing and performing a new song inspired by the faith of these bold believers. See all the I Am N resources available at www.i-am-n.com.
