The group were discovered a year later by Vandals founder Joe Escalante after songwriter Kristopher Roe met him at a concert. Impressed by his demo tape, Escalante asked Roe to put together a full band and record for his label, Kung-Fu Records. Roe then picked up and moved to California in search of bandmates. Hey there, friends.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today, we've got a special “Music Nerd” edition of the podcast, featuring a roundtable discussion with two friends of mine, who also happen to be deeply talented musicians with long tenures in the music business.  During a recent episode of Why Music Matters, I spent some time with the great Dweezil Zappa. Naturally, we discussed Dweezil's ongoing deep-dive into the music of his father, the late composer, bandleader and guitarist supreme Frank Zappa, as well as his April 29th appearance at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, NY.  But we also spent an awful lot of time talking about a shared passion - our love for the iconic and dearly missed  Edward Van Halen.  Going down the Van Halen rabbit-hole with Dweezil gave me an idea, so I called my friends Michael Lee Jackson and Geno McManus and invited them to stop by the studio and join me in a free-form chat on all things Van Halen. Michael is a guitarist, songwriter and bandleader with a long history in entertainment law and artist management. Geno is a professional musician who certainly qualifies as one of the hardest-working men in Buffalo show-business. All three of us have been bonding over our love and admiration for Edward Van Halen for a few decades, at this point. And the topic never gets old - for us, at least. So sit back, grab a beverage, and join us as we dig deep, and do our best to get to the heart of Why Van Halen Matters, to us and so many others.

The Best of HackedePicciotto (Live in Napoli) is Alexander Hacke and Danielle De Pictiotto's newest release showcasing live interpretations of music from across their career. The album includes reinterpretations of tracks from all of their studio albums: Keepsakes (2023), a tender exploration of friendship and loss, The Silver Threshold (2021), their defiant reaction to the pandemic, Perseverantia (2016), which dealt with the artists nomadic lifestyle, Menetekel (2017), which embodies their collective despair at the state of the world, and powerful energy of The Current (2020), recorded by the Irish Sea. For over 20 years Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten) and artist, musician and filmmaker Danielle de Picciotto (co-founder of Love Parade) have been developing and evolving a symbiotic working practise together, with a deep intuition of the kind that has distinguished a rare number of creative and romantic partnerships – think of the writers Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne, the artists Lee Miller and Man Ray or heroes of independent filmmaking, Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes – each partnership underlined by a creative equality that allowed both artists freedom to explore and expand.    https://www.Instagrm.com/hackedepicciotto https://www.Facebook.com/hackepicciotto  https://www.hackedepicciotto.bandcamp.com  Website: https://www.hackedepicciotto.de   Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris is sponsored by Shure Microphones. Music Matters host Darrell Craig Harris speaks with popular ambient/new-age music artist Kevin Keller about the release of his latest album "Evensong" Darrell and Kevin also cover composing, collaboration, and more in this fun and insightful episode!    More on Kevin Keller and his latest release   Evensong is an 8-movement album that not only revives Hildegard's sacred music but also brings her transcendental visions into the contemporary world, offering an immersive experience that blurs the lines between past and present, mysticism and music. Keller enriches her ancient compositions with layers of modern textures—combining strings, vocals, and analog synthesizers—to transform these chants into vivid soundscapes that feel simultaneously timeless and contemporary. At the heart of Evensong is an ambitious attempt to channel Hildegard's spiritual visions, offering audiences a way to experience them in a way that wasn't possible in her time. Kevin has been a leading figure in the new-age music scene for over 30 years, with 14 albums that fuse classical and electronic music in deeply evocative ways. This milestone release represents a significant leap in his artistic journey, and with the GRAMMY's “New Age” category recently expanding to include ambient and chant music, Evensong is primed to make a powerful impact.   www.KevinKeller.com www.Instagram.com/kevinkellerpro https://open.spotify.com/artist/1MpofLeuema5D0edeUEoAD?si=vV7MQgcHSSaMBEG_o75CFw Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris is sponsored by Shure Microphones. In this engaging podcast episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mama B, also known as JacQ Becker, a talented children's music creator, writer, and producer. Mama B recently released her first solo album, "Imagineology," a delightful blend of pop, jazz, and hip hop designed to appeal to both children and parents. Mama B's Background in Music and Transition to Children's Music Mama B's love for music began at a young age, influenced by legends like Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. She pursued her passion by working in various roles within the music industry, including marketing, film and TV licensing, and publishing. Her transition to children's music was a natural progression, inspired by her experiences as a parent. She aimed to create music that both children and parents could enjoy, especially since parents often play these songs on repeat. The Making of "Imagineology" "Imagineology" is the result of Mama B's collaboration with talented producers and musicians who were new to the children's music space but excited about the project. The album's first single, "Unicorn," (just released) was an experiment in blending child-friendly themes with production styles typically intended for adult audiences. JacQ's Advice for Aspiring Artists JacQ emphasizes the importance of authenticity and songwriting skills for aspiring artists. She encourages creators to focus on their strengths and not to get overwhelmed by the need to be perfect or to excel in areas outside their core talent. She also advises artists to release their work into the world and not to be overly self-critical. In her experience, many great songs never get released because artists are too self-critical. Conclusion This podcast offers a fascinating glimpse into Mama B's journey in the music industry and her passion for creating children's music. Her advice for aspiring artists is both practical and inspiring, making this a must-listen for anyone interested in music and creativity.  Please checkout all things MAMA B:  Listen to UNICORN - https://open.spotify.com/album/76aMKaGdIVcOual3X2ovpG?uid=718d2941eb68b15e9f93&uri=spotify%3Atrack%3A69gcXDnbkDi4TtIXhWhoiW www.youtube.com/@mamabsongs +  Instagraminstagram.com/mamabsongs  TikToktiktok.com/@mamabsongs  Facebookfacebook.com/MamaBSongs  Spotifyopen.spotify.com/artist/0yFdwmRwiMLMnuvQ6XmRQX  Apple Musicmusic.apple.com/us/artist/mama-b/1581199873   Thanks for listening in, and thanks to our sponsors, and behind the scene crew that makes this podcast happen :) Music Matters with Darrell Craig Harris is sponsored by Kathy Ireland Worldwide & with support from Music Crowns in London, and Nigel John Farmer.~ my co-producer and voice over talent from his studio @VoiceWrapStudio.com Our thanks to Rodney Hall FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for our intro and outro backing music clip.    A Big Shout and thanks to our friends at #AudioGeer , @sullenfamily and the awesome support! #Shure #MV7 #podcast mic!  Please check out our Music Matters podcast on @spotifypodcasts Hey, also check out the New Music Matters Podcast Website-  Please, support, LIKE and help us grow - check out our Social Media pages: #music #love #hiphop #rap #art #musician #artist #musica #instagood #singer #instagram #rock #like #dance #guitar #photography #song #bhfyp  #newmusic #life #producer #fashion #rapper #viral #songwriter #creative #podcast

As a seasoned music bass guitar player with almost 40 years of experience and the host of the Music Matters Podcast, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Rockie Lynne, a talented musician who has overcome adversity to find success in the music industry. In this podcast episode, we'll delve into Lynne's inspiring journey, his new Amazon documentary and latest album, as well as his charitable work supporting the families of fallen service members. Early Life and Music Career Lynne's passion for music began at a young age. After being found in a garbage dumpster and growing up in an orphanage, he was inspired to become a musician when a man played guitar for him at the age of four. Lynne started playing in bands in high school, and later joined the army to attend the Musicians Institute in California. Despite feeling overwhelmed by the talent in the barracks, Lynne persevered and eventually moved to Minnesota, where he started over and sold 150,000 CDs from his car trunk before getting a record deal. He played 321 nights in a big eight by 20 trailer, becoming a draw before meeting with industry executives. Songwriting, Love, and Forgiveness Lynne's approach to songwriting is unique, comparing it to plumbing or throwing darts. His new album features his classic, full-rich voice and great songs. One of the standout tracks is "Heavy Load," which was inspired by a mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. The song grapples with the concept of love in the face of unimaginable evil. Finding His Biological Father and the Importance of Male Role Models Lynne discovered his biological father through a DNA test and was able to meet him before his death. This experience had a profound impact on Lynne's sense of belonging and purpose. He also emphasizes the importance of male role models in childhood, citing personal experiences and the impact it had on his life. Charity Work for Troops Lynne founded Tribute to the Troops, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps families of fallen service members. The organization has raised over $1 million and sent 123 children to college whose parents died in service. Lynne's commitment to supporting troops and their families is unwavering, and he encourages others to get involved and donate to this important cause. New Amazon Documentary and Album Lynne's new Amazon documentary and album offer a glimpse into his life and music career. The documentary, which is available on Amazon Prime and PBS stations nationwide, showcases Lynne's journey as a singer-songwriter and the importance of showcasing artists' work. His latest album features his signature voice and songwriting style, with themes of love, forgiveness, and moving on from tragedy. Conclusion Rockie Lynne's story is one of resilience, perseverance, and giving back. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, he has remained committed to his passion for music and his desire to help others. His new Amazon documentary and album offer a chance to learn more about this inspiring artist and his incredible journey. When it comes to Mariah Carey, star power is never in doubt. She has sold hundreds of millions of albums and cut more chart-topping hits than any other solo artist—ever. And she has that extraordinary five-octave vocal range. But there is more to her legacy than eye-popping numbers. Why Mariah Carey Matters examines the creative evolution and complicated biography of a true diva, making the case that, despite her celebrity, Carey's musicianship and influence are insufficiently appreciated. He also reckons with the transcendent ideal of the voice that Carey represents, showing how this international icon taught artists around the world to sing with soul-shaking intensity and a spirit of innovation Andrew Chan writes regularly about music, film, and books for 4Columns.
