Three Hearts with Jesus During the Last Supper The Gospel reading takes place in the upper room and recounts the Last Supper. The disciples are sitting around the table with Jesus. Our attention is drawn to three men. It is important to note, because one cannot fully engage the Passion of the Lord, without paying attention to the other characters. Jesus suffers during the Passion, but He is not alone in most of it. The three men are Judas, Peter and the other disciple . . . the one whom Jesus loved. Three Classes of the Human Heart Three classes of the human heart. It also represents three situations in which our own heart can find itself. First, we have the unfaithful heart . . . the heart capable of rejection and betrayal. Second, we have a loyal, but flawed heart. It is the heart of one who tries to be faithful. One that tries to be a good friend. It is a heart that often succeeds, but despite best intentions, often comes up short. He fails at loving. He fails not because he doesn't love, but often shows his love in the wrong way. Lastly, we have this “Other” heart. A heart that rests against the beating heart of the Lord Himself! The beloved, whose life is marked with a singular intimacy with the Lord. Listen to this Homily to hear more about these three hearts. The first words within the Gospel are moving words. Jesus is deeply troubled. We can almost hear the pain in His voice. He knows one of His friends will betray Him. The suffering of the Lord has already begun within the Upper Room. Today is the Feast of Saint Albert the Great, a man who lived in the 1200s and was the teacher of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Father reads some insights from Saint Albert about the words of Jesus During the Last Supper.
Christians believe in resurrection. The cross is certainly part of the great news from heaven to all of creation; but what makes it good news is that death is not the end of the story. The resurrection forms the center of the gospel of God. Christ came that we might have life, because he himself is the resurrection and the life. Christians proclaim that the Spirit is the giver of Life. And nothing declares that God is Father Almighty quite like saying that God raises the dead–first Jesus, then we ourselves–that death may be swallowed up in victory. The sermon today is titled "Why Christianity Has A Resurrection." It is the second installment in our "Matters of First Importance" Series. The Scripture reading is from 1 Corinthians 15:12-19. Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on October 16, 2022. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. God With Us: Jesus, Week 24King: The Post-Resurrection Appearances of Jesus During the 40 days following His resurrection, Jesus appeared many times in many places to individuals and groups of people. Only a few of the appearances are recorded in the 4 gospels. The empty tomb, combined with His numerous post-resurrection appearances and the impact these had on His followers, constitute the evidence proving that Jesus defeated death, as He said He would. This message is part of our God With Us series where Pastor Bob walks us through the entire Bible. Speaker: Pastor Rick Barry, The Rock Middle School Ministry
