Today on the show we are joined by author, Kevin Cook to discuss his new book: The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played. This show will go down as an instant classic - an unbelievable journey to Tiger's most dominant stretch of golf. A special thanks to Simon and Schuster for connecting me with Kevin Cook.
It's a feat that needs no introduction. As we approach the 25th anniversary of Tiger Woods' four-major run from the 2000 US Open through the 2001 Masters, a new book from former Sports Illustrated and Golf Magazine editor Kevin Cook unearths never-before-seen nuggets from this historic stretch. Cook joins host Tom Coyne to discuss The Tiger Slam, Cook's moment-by-moment chronicle that features interviews with Stevie Williams, Mark O'Meara, Butch Harmon and many others. They relive the indelible images of the Slam, including Tiger's landslide victory at Pebble and his nailbiting duel with Bob May at Valhalla, but the true treasures lie in details that have remained hidden until now. You'll learn what Tiger said to Phil walking off 13 tee at Augusta, why his team nearly scuttled his “Sportsman of the Year” dinner at the last minute, and which major Tiger played using only one tee. (Hint: It was the same one in which a nude exotic dancer paraded across the 18th green. Try finding that on a YouTube rewatch.) Kevin Cook is a former senior editor of Sports Illustrated and former editor in chief of Golf Magazine. In addition to a long career in the sports periodicals industry, Kevin has also published a number of books, the most well-known of which is Tommy's Honor, chronicling the fascinating life of Young Tom Morris during golf's early years in and around St Andrews. Cook's newest book, The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played details Tiger's unforgettable four-major stretch from the 2000 US Open to the 2001 Masters. In this episode, I revisit the world of treasury management, a realm I have been deeply involved with since my younger years. It's a world filled with treasury bills, certificates of deposit, and REPO. Managing treasury involves placing funds, effectively managing risk with clear visibility and transparency, and accessing institutional markets. My fascination with this subject is shared by my guest this week, Kevin. He shares insights into the FinTech company he co-founded, which is revolutionising how clients manage their treasuries with a sophisticated approach. This London-based scale-up has moved beyond traditional Excel sheets, developing Fixed-Term Funds to enable more sophisticated management. You'll learn about the financial product's structure, the diverse client base ranging from private equity funds to large listed corporations, their outreach strategies, and their geographical focus. It's an inspiring journey akin to scaling the north face of Everest.

And, having raised a $29 million Series B led by Balderton Capital in the summer of 2023, Kevin shares insights on business building why it was so crucial that the business could scale in a capital efficient way. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has long called gun violence in America an epidemic. He's pushing for more research into gun violence and what the government can do to prevent it. Then, a federal appeals court ended Johnsons & Johnson's attempt to sidestep lawsuits over its baby powder Monday. The company tried to use a bankruptcy filing to block the nearly 40,000 lawsuits from people alleging its baby powder contains asbestos. NPR's Scott Horsley joins us. And, author Kevin Cook talks about his new book, "Waco Rising: David Koresh, the FBI, and the Birth of America's Modern Militias."
In the midst of all the coverage of January 6th you may have heard one of the insurrectionists' slogans mentioned through the reporting: "Remember Waco". With the 30th anniversary of the historic siege at Waco approaching next month, it is clear that the message and radicalization that would result in a 51-day-standoff in 1993 is alarmingly relevant today.
