Three Hearts with Jesus During the Last Supper The Gospel reading takes place in the upper room and recounts the Last Supper. The disciples are sitting around the table with Jesus. Our attention is drawn to three men. It is important to note, because one cannot fully engage the Passion of the Lord, without paying attention to the other characters. Jesus suffers during the Passion, but He is not alone in most of it. The three men are Judas, Peter and the other disciple . . . the one whom Jesus loved. Three Classes of the Human Heart Three classes of the human heart. It also represents three situations in which our own heart can find itself. First, we have the unfaithful heart . . . the heart capable of rejection and betrayal. Second, we have a loyal, but flawed heart. It is the heart of one who tries to be faithful. One that tries to be a good friend. It is a heart that often succeeds, but despite best intentions, often comes up short. He fails at loving. He fails not because he doesn't love, but often shows his love in the wrong way. Lastly, we have this “Other” heart. A heart that rests against the beating heart of the Lord Himself! The beloved, whose life is marked with a singular intimacy with the Lord. Listen to this Homily to hear more about these three hearts. The first words within the Gospel are moving words. Jesus is deeply troubled. We can almost hear the pain in His voice. He knows one of His friends will betray Him. The suffering of the Lord has already begun within the Upper Room. Or DOES IT??? Alignment can be a useful starting point, but Matt and Joe are here to uncover the ways additional nuance can help us breathe new life into our characters. This episode finally answers your most pressing questions: Where does alignment even come from? How can we use more varied questions to make characters that feel more real and fulfilling? I have just finished reading Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson. Recognized as one of the key texts that inspired and shaped D&D. I ponder how different D&D would be if we had never had heroic fantasy and been stuck in the mire with these wonky and delightful Appendix N novels. This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we return to Appendix N and check out Poul Anderson's Three Hearts and Three Lions. Even though it starts off in World War II and features lots of scientific theories to explain magical effects, this 1961 novel is a formative text for Dungeons & Dragons. It establishes many of the feels of a D&D adventure, with its travel and towns and non player characters and random encounters. Perhaps most importantly, it introduces a terrifying take on the troll that Gygax would essentially Xerox for the game. Interesting stuff! * * * Through September 7, use the code ROLLDICE to get $6 off any purchase $25 or more at Noble Knight! Hang out with us on the Vintage RPG Discord! In today’s series we discover the stubborn heart of King Herod when Jesus’ birth challenged his kingship and how our hearts should be like that of the three kings seeking to worship Jesus the King of kings. Today I have three questions about the OCEAN and creatures in it! Because June 8th is World Oceans Day, a global celebration with hundreds of events around the world celebrating the ocean, including Everything Under The Sun with this show! Our first question comes from Emmeline and Elkie, they would like to know why the sea is salty? Our answer comes from Philip Hoare, a writer who loves the ocean and has written books about whales and the sea. He swims in the ocean every day, no matter the weather! He tells how the sea got so salty and how much salt is in the sea!Next up Archie would like to know why an octopus has three hearts? Find out what the three hearts are for as well as what colour an octopus' blood is, how many brains they have and how many arms and legs! Our last question is from Lachlan and he has a question about orcas! Which is, why are orca whales black and white? To answer it we have Richard Sabin, the Principal Curator of Mammals at the Natural History Museum in London, he knows everything there is to know about marine mammals including orcas and tells us all about counter shading and their colours! We also talked about orcas in the first episode of the podcast, in two questions – firstly we answered a question about whether orcas can talk to blue whales and secondly why they have white patches by their eyes, so do listen to that first episode of Everything Under The Sun to find out more about beautiful orcas!A huge thank you to Philip Hoare for talking to us about why the sea is salty and to Richard Sabin and the Natural History Museum for telling us about orcas! And of course a big thank you to Elkie, Emmeline, Archie and Lachlan for this week's questions! I'll be back with a next brand new episode for Fathers day answering more questions from children around the world in another episode of EUTS. Do send in your questions, there's info about how to do that on the show's website, everythingunderthesun.co.uk.Remember, the questions will now also be in a BOOK, I need all the questions soon as I'm busy writing away so please do send them in as soon as you can!If you like the show people do rate, review and subscribe and tell all your friends to do the same, it really does help!Thank you, have a lovely week and GOODBYE! Well, we made it folks. One hundred episodes. The century. The big ton. We're here, and damn it feels good. When reaching such a milestone, it's natural to look back and reflect on what has been a quite amazing journey. We've done some brilliant things and met the best people since we started this podcast but, really, one guest stands out to us above all others. Dunedin's very own Kane Strang is a bonafide musical hero for both of us, with each of his two albums ranking amongst our all-time favourites, and welcoming him on to the show at last year's Great Escape Festival was a thrill like no other. Ever since then we've wanted to get Kane back on the show for a full episode in our classic 'old, new, borrowed, blue' format, and when we asked if he'd mind giving up his Monday morning to do exactly that he was only too happy to oblige. He's nice like that. So thank you to Kane for joining us on what we think is a perfect hundredth episode. Thank you to you, our listeners. Thank you to our friends and family. Thank you to everyone who has helped out or supported us along the way. Here's to the next hundred. Tim & Harry x We do not claim ownership of any of the music played in this episode. Rachel Hicks | Three Hearts Farm (https://www.threeheartsfarm.com/) | Bozeman MT ~ Recorded November 22, 2017 ~ Tell us a little about yourself. So, I grew up in Moiese north of Missoula, close to the bison range. We did a lot of gardening, outside work, 4H, that kind of thing. After I was married, Josh and I moved. (https://www.threeheartsfarm.com/?page_id=3583) We spent some time in Harrison and north of Ronan. While we were in Ronan. Josh’s Aunt and Uncle had the opportunity to buy Three Hearts Farm (https://www.threeheartsfarm.com/?page_id=3583) . They asked us if we would be interested in Managing farm, and they gave us the opportunity to manage it and own it as well. So we are still in that process of getting there. (https://www.threeheartsfarm.com/?page_id=3583) We moved a year ago from last June. We’ve been here about 18 months. We learned a lot about Bozeman and the community and gardening here. We have 4 boys the oldest is 11 the youngest is 3 We enjoy teaching them about gardening working with people helping at farmer’s markets We have a milk cow, and we enjoy her and some ducks our primary animals as well! Tell me about your first gardening experience? So I always remember working in the garden. I remember sitting and I was with my parents bothers and sisters. We would pod peas for hours on end while dad read a story to us. Or we would snap beans IDK I remember being up late late at night processing corn so we could freeze it with my mom and my sister. And the crazy things that you do because garden season just happens that way. Family Chores We had my brother and sister and I chores in the garden planting seeds with my dad early on. We just did a lot of gardening growing up. I love that I have always pictured mike and I sitting on the porch shelling peas with the grandkids. I feel blessed having that growing up real appreciation and connection to the land around us how it feeds us and how we can take care of it. Important things I hope we are passing it on to our kids as well. Are you a millennial? I figure millennials are born between 1980 and 1995. I was born in 1973. My listeners and guests are the kind of people who want to share those things with their children. How did you learn how to garden organically? I definitely started learning about gardening organically growing up It’s been a journey When we were living in Harrison I met a woman who’s become a good friend, Jenny Carl. She really introduced me to some other organic gardeners and really paying attention to the soil. To treating the soil as a living organism as well How to be thinking about how to take care of the soil it’s so important for growing really healthy nutritious food for us as well I continue to learn I don’t think I’ve arrived yet at thee best way to garden organically. Every year the climate change and seasons are changing My husbands constantly talking about how things have changed so much even since 10 years ago. For sure soil health has been the biggest talking point on my show. IT all starts with healthy soil. Do you have anything about how you keep your soil healthy? yeah I feel as though we’re really working on developing a system for maintaining healthy soil here in our particular area, on our particular land there isn’t a real system set in place not that its really rigid some cover cropping tilling that in manure applications at time nothing consistent and in a good cycle of rotation We’re really working on trying to develop diverse cover crops and to really expand and explore that allowing for a rotation not just rotating vegetable crops land in and out of production growing a cover corp and then grazed by animals series of cover crops before it’s... Michael Moorcock’s first five Elric of Melniboné stories appeared in the British magazine Science Fantasy in 1962 and were collected in hardcover the next year as The Stealer of Souls, followed by a U.S. paperback edition from Lancer Books in 1967. Savage and sardonic, the Elric stories must have seemed like a fantasy off-shoot of Great Britain’s “Angry Young Man” movement of that era. At first glance, Elric of Melniboné appears to be the very antithesis of Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Cimmerian: a physically weak sorcerer, addicted to drugs, symbiotically linked to the malignant black sword Stormbringer, and the rightful emperor of a cruel and decadent pre-human civilization. Moorcock and Elric are often characterized as a negation or rejection of Howardian swords & sorcery, but that’s a drastic oversimplification of Moorcock’s relationship to pulp fantasy. Moorcock was precocious fantasy talent, creating fanzines as a schoolboy and becoming editor of the professional magazine Tarzan Adventures by the age 17 in 1957. Moorcock was a notable contributor to AMRA, a fanzine that was a hotbed of discussion about fantasy fiction and counted among its many notable correspondents Poul Anderson, L. Sprague de Camp, Fritz Leiber, and Roger Zelazny. As mentioned here, the term “swords and sorcery” was coined by Fritz Leiber in dialogue with Moorcock, although Moorcock has always preferred the term “epic fantasy”. Moorcock has at times minimized but never totally denied his appreciation for Howard, most likely hoping to let the Elric saga stand on its own two feet. He’s also held up his deep regard for the works of Leigh Brackett, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Fritz Leiber, and Fletcher Pratt among others and was later a founding member of the Swordsmen and Sorceror's Guild of America, none of which indicates someone contemptuous or indifferent to fantasy fiction. Moorcock continued to write Elric stories in the late 1960s and the 1970s that were set prior to the events of Stormbringer. DAW Books republished the Elric Saga in 1977, arranging the stories by internal chronology, splitting the stories from The Stealer of Souls between The Weird of the White Wolf and The Bane of the Black Sword, the third and fifth books of Elric’s saga respectively. With Moorcock’s approval, Del Rey/Ballantine began publishing the “definitive” version of Elric’s saga in 2008, once again collecting the stories in publication order. Elric’s saga clearly had an impact on Gary Gygax as he specifically mentions Elric as a playable figure in the “Fantasy Supplement” to Chainmail (1971). The Law vs. Chaos alignment system in Chainmail and original Dungeons & Dragons (1974) may have originated with Poul Anderson’s Three Hearts and Three Lions, but there’s a distinct Moorcockian flavor in practice, although that would obviously vary from gaming group to gaming group. Rob Kuntz and James Ward wrote up Elric and the Melnibonéan mythos in the fourth Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Gods, Demi-Gods, & Heroes (1976). Four years later, Kuntz and Ward would detail the Melnibonéan mythos for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in Deities & Demigods (1980). Although TSR had permission from Moorcock to use Elric for D&D, their West Coast rivals Chaosium secured the official Elric license in 1981, leading TSR to remove the Melnibonéan section (and Cthulhu Mythos section) from the third printing onwards of Deities & Demigods. As a result, the first two printings of Deities & Demigods are now highly sought after collector’s items. In the meantime, Elric’s gaming presence has remained tightly bound up in the RuneQuest/Basic Role-Playing system for over 25 years, with the exception of Chaosium’s D20 System adaptation Dragon Lords of Melniboné (2001). There is currently no gaming license for any of Michael Moorcock’s works, so it remains to be seen if Elric will ever make an official reappearance at the gaming table….

Poul Anderson’s Three Hearts and Three Lions was originally serialized in 1953 in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction--eight years later a revised and expanded version of the tale would see print in hardcover from Doubleday, followed by an Avon paperback in 1962. It has remained sporadically in print ever since, largely overshadowed by Anderson’s more famous science fiction works. Although Anderson was best known during the first half of his writing career as a science fiction author, Three Hearts and Three Lions and his following fantasy work The Broken Sword (1954) had a strong impact on knowledgeable fans and fellow writers, perhaps most clearly with Michael Moorcock’s adoption and reinterpretation of the cosmic struggle between Law and Chaos in the Elric of Melniboné stories, which began appearing in 1961. It’s interesting to speculate how much of himself Anderson put into Holger Carlsen, the hero of Three Hearts and Three Lions--they are both Danish-Americans, trained in science and engineering, and apparently wholly rational and pragmatic. Holger rises to adventure though, rediscovering and embracing his true identity as Ogier the Dane, paladin of Charlemagne and one the great heroes of medieval European literature. In a similar vein, perhaps Anderson’s romantic side led him to become a founding member of both the Society for Creative Anachronism and the Swordsmen and Sorceror's Guild of America. Throughout its publishing history Three Hearts and Three Lions never had an iconic cover, and the Appendix N-era 1978 Berkley Medallion paperback is no exception, featuring a serviceable cover by Wayne Barlowe, who would later become more well-known for his anatomically realistic depictions of fantastic creatures and truly alien life. That Three Hearts and Three Lions is one of the most significant influences on early Dungeons & Dragons is undeniable. For example, Gary Gygax specifically cites the book in the listing for the “True Troll” in the “Fantasy Supplement” to Chainmail (1971), although a full description of the Andersonian troll (and the nixie) would have to wait for the original Dungeons & Dragons (1974) box set. The original 1974 rules would also feature the most famous borrowing from Three Hearts and Three Lions, the Law vs. Chaos alignment system, although perhaps filtered through Michael Moorcock’s interpretation in the Elric books. Certain Lawful fighters could elect to achieve Holger Carlsen-esque paladin status with the publication of the first D&D supplement, Greyhawk (1975). Paladins would evolve into their quintessential D&D form as a fighter sub-class in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook (1978) The troll and the nixie would receive much more detailed write-ups in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual (1977), with the Swanmay finally making her first D&D appearance in the Monster Manual II (1983). A close reading of Three Hearts and Three Lions and the various early Dungeons & Dragons would undoubtedly reveal more direct influences on the game as we know it today.

Colleen learns how Jim pairs together stories of octopus love and a Viking promise in Episode 25. Last week, you heard "Vikings" by Rachel Brough, and this week you'll hear "Three Hearts" by Melissa Palmer, which is part two of the pair of themed episodes. What's the theme? Slow down, listen up, and find out!
A viking and an octopus walk into a bar...Jim swears there's a punchline here but Colleen isn't so sure. This week, Rachel Brough tells us about "Vikings" (just in time for the new GOT premiere!) and next week Jim will tell us how vikings related to the octopuses in Melissa Palmer's "Three Hearts." Be sure to tune in to both episodes!

In a globalized culture that has given up on God in general, not to mention the Judeo-Christian concept of God, one of the first casualties is marriage. And that’s our culture. We would be naïve to think that our culture’s distorted ideas about marriage have no affect on us — they certainly do, even if only subconsciously. To defend God’s beautiful vision for marriage, both in our own lives and in our societies, we need to keep reminding ourselves and deepening our understanding of that vision. This Retreat Guide, "Three Hearts", will help you do that. Join Fr. John Bartunek, LC, S.Th.D. for "Three Hearts: A Retreat Guide on the Sacrament of Marriage" from RCSpirituality.org.
