At Sea Change Preparatory, a school in Del Mar, San Diego that not only educates junior high and high school students in traditional subjects, but also focuses on mindfulness, physical fitness, teamwork, and goal setting, they begin each day on the beach with a ten minute meditation and a mile-long swim in the open ocean before starting classes. What’s even more impressive, these kids are training to swim the English Channel as a team this summer. John Allcock, the co-founder and Director of Mindfulness at Sea Change Preparatory, talks about the impact this kind of education is having on these kids’ lives. John isn’t just an educator though, he’s also a Harvard-educated trial lawyer at one of the top firms in San Diego and the author of Forty Things I Wish I’d Told My Kids, a book about his journey learning mindfulness. Mindfulness has been a hot topic for a while now, but incorporating it into education is still a relatively new idea. John and the folks at Sea Change Prep are making a huge difference in these kids’ lives, so much so that it made me wonder how long it will be until a meditation practice is commonplace in both our kids’ lives and our own lives.

In episode 72 of Fresh Tracks I speak with mindfulness expert John Allcock. We dig deep into the role mindfulness plays in setting and achieving goals, our belief in ourselves, and how we handle failure. John shares that being mindful (aware) allows us to recognize if our thoughts are unrealistically negative – which impacts our belief in our self. Once we are aware we can then make the decision to check the thoughts out and see if they are correct and, if not, replace them with more accurate, positive beliefs and intentions. Which ultimately allow us to live a happier, fuller, and more meaningful life. Sounds great, but how do you do this you may ask? John shares techniques to train your attention so you don’t get wrapped up in distorted thinking that’s not realistic. Awareness gives us the power to realize we are choosing to listen to negative thoughts and the choice to choose positive thoughts. In this week’s show we also take a look at how we handle failure. Because if you look at failure as something to avoid you won’t set lofty goals or cut Fresh Tracks. In reality failure just means that you are trying new things. John shares that mindfulness training is the solution to all of these difficult issues. Check out this week’s show and decide for yourself. Show Notes: 4:00 – Why believing in yourself impacts the quality of the goals you set 5:50 – Tips for working your way through failure when you are in the midst of it 8:20 – The secret key to training your attention 12:00 – The art of being skilled in awareness 15:10 – An insight into how kids handle paying attention to their awareness 19:00 – You can try to pave every path or you can make some shoes…. 22:00 – The one thing you can do to avoid anxiety 23:50 – What if much of what you believe is wrong? 26:20 – How to start assessing what your beliefs are – particularly if you are unhappy About the Author: John Allcock has dedicated over 15 years to the practice and instruction of mindfulness. He is the Co-Founder and Director of Mindfulness at Sea Change Preparatory, a trailblazing academy that regularly implements the practice of mindfulness in it’s curriculum. The school’s emphasis on mindfulness set the foundation for the success of it’s students, including world-record-breaking swimmers, which were featured on NBC Nightly News. John is also a Harvard-educated trial lawyer and has been the Global Co-Chair of DLA Piper’s Intellectual Property Group. He lives in Del Mar, California with his wife and co-founder Cheryl. Forty Things I Wish I'd Told My Kids Show Guest: John Allcock Most of what we worry about never happens. Yet, worrying takes up much of our time, energy, and attention. We are often victims of our own thoughts. We automatically assume those thoughts are true, when in fact they often are not. As a result, we fill our lives with unpleasant mind state. The good news is that we do not have to be stuck with whatever thoughts arise, we can change them. In Forty Things I Wish I'd Told My Kids, John Allcock presents the essentials of mindfulness - not as something special and exotic, but as practical, down-to-Earth principles for living and overcoming the "thought" trap. Written in clear, simple language, John will share how Forty Things I Wish I'd Told My Kids is written in clear, simple language for anyone interested in living a fuller, happier life - including parents, young adults, and readers of Anna Quindlen's A Short Guide to a Happy Life or H. Jackson Brown's Life's Little Instruction Book.

Let's get started with things we wish we knew about health and about life when we were 18. What did our generation get right? Wrong? What do we see is the biggest challenges in life and health for the next generation? MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) THAT MUSIC MEANS IT'S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE'RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS. New research out of UT Southwestern Medical Center and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas shows that middle age exercise can actually protect the heart from aging, reduce damage, and protect the heart from heart failure. Here's what they found: you need to start the exercise before age 65 when the heart has the most ability to repair itself. The exercise needs to be four to five times a week for at least 30 minutes. Warm up and cool down is in addition to that 30 minutes. In the study they looked at 50 participants and divided them into two different groups. After two years, those that had exercised showed 18% improvement in oxygen intake during exercise and greater than 25% improvement in the left ventricular muscle of the heart. My advice, don't put off exercise, start today for a healthier heart tomorrow. Read the study! Follow us on Facebook! Tweet us on Twitter!
