I've shared - and will link to - two episodes recently linking the benefits of walking to both my personal experience and science-based results from walking. See other episodes you might like below! An elite athlete joins us today to share his thoughts on walking for midlife fat loss. My Guest: Brad Kearns, Mark Sisson's co-author on The Keto Reset Diet, boasts a diverse athletic career as a US national champion triathlete and Guinness World Record speed golfer. His B.rad podcast is a top-ranked Apple Podcasts favorite in the Fitness category, showcasing his dedication to fitness and health innovation. Longevity Mindset Why Brad is determined to live to 100+ and how you can, too. Stay Young at Heart: Brad shares why surrounding yourself with younger, vibrant friends keeps your spirit (and body) youthful. Live Long, Drop Dead: Embrace the idea of living vibrantly until the very end—no long declines, just a sharp drop when it's time. Compress Morbidity: Aim to delay the onset of age-related issues for as long as possible—live fully, then go quickly and peacefully. Set Big Goals: Whether it's mastering a new sport or planning to hike the Appalachian Trail (but maybe not camping, as Deb jokes!), staying future-focused boosts longevity. Plan for 100+: Brad isn't just aiming for 100 years—he's got a game plan for reaching 110 and beyond! Fat-Burning Wisdom Fat Max Heart Rate: Keep exercise at a comfortable pace to maximize fat burning. Walking vs. Running: Walking is kinder on your body and great for fat loss — no guilt if you're not a runner! High-Intensity Training: Short bursts of intense effort with plenty of rest boost metabolism for days. Key Takeaways for Walking for Midlife Fat Loss Ditch the “Shoulds”: You don't have to run or do hardcore workouts to be fit. The Power of Walking: It's not “just walking”—it's a metabolic and mental game-changer. Micro Workouts: Little movements throughout the day add up—think squats while waiting for coffee! Longevity Strategy: The goal isn't just to live longer but to thrive with energy and strength. Questions We Answer in This Episode: Do you focus on female science, female clients or a mixture of both? What does a typical day look like for you? Is running or walking better for fitness? How does rephrasing to “Which is better for fatness, running or walking?” change the perspective? How can we empower listeners to know when running is okay and when it's too stressful? Explain how walking helps women lose fat more effectively than running, especially given the focus on calorie burn over hormonal balance. How many steps a day should someone aim for? Or is there a better question to ask? Physical fitness is all about cardio exercises and weightlifting… right? If you've ever finished a run and then jumped straight into the rest of your day without stretching, only to wake up the next day feeling stiff and with aching muscles, then listen up. Flexibility plays a big role in our lives – even bending down to pick something up off the floor requires flexibility – but it's often ignored and neglected. So, why and how should we stretch? When athletes stretch, it's not just for show, they do it to prevent injury. A review of research called 'Effects of Stretching on Injury Risk Reduction and Balance' highlighted that stretching not only reduces injury risk by improving the flexibility of the muscles, it also improves balance, which reduces the risk of falls and those associated injuries. Stretching can also help maintain good posture by keeping our muscles long and loose, which is especially important if you spend hours hunched over a desk. In the modern world, many of us spend a large proportion of our days sitting, which can lead to chronic pain, particularly in the neck and shoulders. Stretching can alleviate this tension and boost blood circulation. What's the best way to reap these benefits? While stretching advice varies, the ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal provides guidelines which include stretching the major muscle groups such as the hamstrings and quadriceps at least two or three times per week. A 2017 review of research, published in the Sports Med journal, suggests that dynamic stretches, where you stretch in slow, repeated movements, have greater benefits in a pre-exercise warm-up than static stretches, where you hold a pose. Stretching is better after a quick warm-up because the muscle is more pliable, reducing the risk of muscle strains. Stretching isn't just for athletes and fitness lovers. "Stretching is also an accessible way to unwind and destress during or after a busy day," says Jessica Matthews, professor of kinesiology and author of 'Stretching to Stay Young'. So why not finish the day relaxing in a child's pose, a spinal twist or a happy baby?

We all know that older person who just seems so young. How do they pull it off? Did they hit the genetic jackpot? Or do their lifestyle habits act as a fountain of youth? Doctor Dawn Carr has answers. With a PhD in Sociology and Gerontology, she directs the Claude Pepper Center at Florida State University and is a former researcher at the Stanford Center on Longevity. What I loved about Dawn was that, unlike so many in her field, she has concrete solutions to many of life's challenges. She doesn't just identify the problems or hand out vague suggestions. She has a litmus test for determining a person's social health. How many close friends should we have? How cognitively complex should our daily activities be? Can more sleep help prevent mental decline? Answering her specific questions can help us determine how to maximize the vibrancy of youth while we age. No one has a magic wand. We're all getting older. But listening to Dawn Carr might help you enjoy the process. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hey there, friends! It's your host Joe here, with a truly eye-opening chat I recently had with the insightful Jeffrey Gladden. We dove deep into some pretty life-altering concepts around relationships, longevity, and the incredible blend of youth and wisdom. Let me tell you, this conversation was not your run-of-the-mill talk. We explored how to ask questions that matter, the impact of our mindset on aging, and why maintaining a youthful spirit is essential for a meaningful and impactful life. We also touched on the importance of transcending past experiences and focusing on love, connection, and contribution. There's so much to unpack from our conversation, so I've put together this blog post to cover all the gold nuggets we unearthed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLXkCpptCPg The Power of Courageous Conversations Jeffrey and I discussed how important it is to delve into courageous conversations. These aren't just any talks; they're the kind that creates bonds that can withstand storms. Jeffrey suggested that by simply asking deeper questions, we can unlock what really makes a person come alive. The key takeaway here is that being vulnerable, empathetic, and understanding can foster more love and connection in our relationships. Longevity: A Young Body with an Ancient Mind One of my favorite parts of our discussion was about keeping a youthful mind in an aging body. Jeffrey blew my mind with his take on "100 is the New 30." Imagine having the physicality of a 30-year-old but the wisdom of someone three centuries old. He talked about his journey from sick care to health care, shifting focus to longevity and how we should adopt an exponential strategy for aging. This means always striving to be our best self. The Life Energy Circle We then spiraled into the concept of the 'life energy circle,' which comprises mindset, mental health, and building fabulous relationships. The gist of it is mastering the art of relational aspects, knowing that the human touch remains indispensable even in our tech-savvy age. It's about looking beyond the surface and engaging in life with a whole heart. Relationships in an AI World Even as technology and AI continue to surge forward, Jeffrey and I agreed that humanity's touch is absolutely crucial. We discussed how believing in yourself and overcoming past conditioning is key to thriving. It's not just about the tech; it's about the people and connections we make along the way. Overcoming Trauma and Embracing Love Trauma, as Jeffrey puts it, is something we need to understand, heal from, and ultimately transcend. It's heavy stuff, but it's so important for growth. Our chat highlighted the significance of love and becoming 'unencumbered' by our past. The psycho-spiritual angle really comes into play here – understanding that our security doesn't come from external sources but from within. Financial Gain vs. Relational Wealth Success shouldn't only be measured in dollars and cents. Jeffrey emphasized the value of resonant relationships over mere financial gain. We talked about quantum thinking, seeking inspiration from others, and building connections that resonate with our mission, vision, and values. Jeffrey Gladden's Resources And for all you go-getters eager to learn more, Jeffrey shared a treasure trove of resources: - His game-changing book "100 is the New 30" - His insightful podcast "Gladden Longevity Podcast" - And his website "Gladden Longevity" for anyone interested in diving deeper into the world of longevity and peak living. In conclusion, our conversation was a profound journey into the realms of courage, questioning norms, and understanding the beauty of human connections. Whether it's about facing life with the heart of a 30-year-old and the wisdom of a 300-year-old, or focusing on more than just financial gains, this chat has reshaped how I view my everyday interactions and long-term goals. The overarching message? Embrace love, strive for impact, and value the bonds we create along the way. And remember, folks, while we're out there hustling and keeping our flowcharts in check, let's not forget to live young, and love deeply, for as long as we possibly can. Parents Want Olivia Rodrigo To "Stay Young Forever"...And That's Unfair In today's video, we deep dive and dissect Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS tour and her musical journey and why parents are so upset at her for it. We need to talk about the parental discontent surrounding TikTok clips from her concerts going viral, highlighting the societal dissatisfaction with her pivot towards a Gen Z audience rather than catering to young children, which is what society wants from her. This toxic assumption stems from Olivia's Disney background and the unfair stereotype imposed on young women in the music industry, expecting them to remain young and innocent forever. These double standards and toxic expectations are unjust and unfair, as celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus deserve the freedom to explore their artistry without harsh criticism and unrealistic societal demands. These artists aren't responsible for acting as moral compasses for other people's children, that is the parents responsibility. Stop blaming celebrities for not being the way you want them to be!
