Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2026 17:39

In this episode of The Way We See It, Pastor Alex Bryant unpacks the powerful reality of the Delmar Boulevard divide in St. Louis, where one street separates two completely different worlds, one marked by struggle, the other by opportunity and growth. While many point to systemic issues, Alex leans into a deeper conversation about education, exposure, and decision-making. He challenges listeners to think beyond circumstances and consider how wisdom, financial literacy, and daily choices shape outcomes over time. With both compassion and clarity, this episode pushes us to stop making excuses, start making better decisions, and take ownership of the future we're building.

In this episode of Practically Pastoring, Andrew, Jeff, and Delmar tackle two timely ministry questions that force pastors to think carefully about doctrine, discipleship, public witness, and pastoral wisdom. The first question centers on baby dedication and what standards churches should use when the family situation is complicated. The guys discuss the difference between dedication and baptism, the importance of grace for new believers, and why churches need clarity before they are forced to make a difficult decision in real time. The second question focuses on hosting an interfaith National Day of Prayer event in a church sanctuary. The conversation explores whether sharing church space for a multi-faith prayer gathering strengthens community witness or muddies theological clarity. Along the way, the guys reflect on sacred space, civic involvement, symbolism, and why the location of an event can change the meaning of the event itself. This episode is a great reminder that pastors are often asked to make decisions in gray areas without much time, and that faithful ministry usually requires both conviction and compassion, not just one or the other. What we cover in this episodeHow churches should think about baby dedication versus baptismWhy a baby dedication is often more about parental and congregational commitment than the circumstances of conceptionThe value of written policies or one-page position papers for difficult pastoral issuesHow grace and discipleship should shape the way churches respond to new believersWhy pastors should be careful not to confuse guarding holiness with guarding appearancesWhether hosting an interfaith prayer event in a sanctuary changes the meaning of the eventWhy a church building may not be a neutral space when the gathering is explicitly spiritualHow to think about civic prayer events differently from worship-centered eventsThe challenge of balancing neighborliness, theological clarity, and public witnessResources mentionedChurch Merch from Promotions Guypromotionsguy.com/churchmerchPractically Pastoring Facebook CommunityA place for pastors and ministry leaders to ask honest questions, get practical feedback, and avoid doing ministry alone

Branden Hudson welcomes Mike Kostis, co-owner of Delmar Pizza in Delmar, Delaware/Maryland, a community cornerstone since February 1991, and discusses how the business has kept value despite inflation, raising an extra-large cheese pizza about $6 since 1992. Kostis credits long-term success to consistency, hands-on ownership with his father, premium ingredients, fermentation, and a “get 1% better every day” mindset, while maintaining core menu items and evolving slowly with new offerings like grandma pies, desserts, and house-made ice cream. They cover work ethic shaped by family restaurant roots, balancing grinding with smarter business decisions, and hiring for hospitality over transactions. Kostis shares operational scale (up to ~1,000 pizzas on busy nights), community support through school lunches and donations, faith as a foundation, and plans for nationwide shipping via delmarpizzapasta.com.00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro01:05 Delmar Pride and Legacy02:33 Pizza Prices and Inflation04:20 Consistency and Ingredients07:58 Family Roots and Lineage10:27 Work Ethic and Sacrifice13:53 Evolving the Menu18:03 Grandma Pie Explained20:26 Fees Banks and Small Business26:28 Hiring A Players28:48 Cousin Sales Story29:48 Training With Respect30:44 Hospitality Over Service32:30 Consistency Lessons34:12 Busiest Nights Volume36:12 Systems And Scaling40:16 Faith And Giving Back49:17 Handling Reviews Mistakes50:24 Wrap Up And Where To Find

This week on Practical(ly) Pastoring, Andrew, Tim, Delmar, and Jeff tackle two questions straight from the Facebook group, and both of them hit close to home.First, they discuss the sting pastors feel when key families skip their church's Easter service for the bigger production down the road. Is that just modern church culture, a discipleship issue, a membership issue, or simply one of those wounds pastors have to hand to the Lord? The guys talk honestly about insecurity, church commitment, megachurch envy, Facebook sleuthing, and why relational investment may matter more than confrontation. Then they turn to a second question that may be even harder: how do you actually invite criticism in your church? They unpack how leaders can model humility, create healthy pathways for feedback, separate useful critique from noise, and build a culture where honesty is normal instead of threatening. This episode is brought to you by Church Merch.Whether your church needs t-shirts, hats, pens, name tags, or maybe even a hairnet with your logo on it, they can help.Visit promotionsguy.com/churchmerch and tell them Practical(ly) Pastoring sent you.

With Sea Otter around the corner, we tackle the "spicy" topic of 32-inch wheels—is it the industry's next big life preserver or just a shiny new object?

It was November 15, 2004, 52-year-old Peter Porco woke up like he always did: early, well before his alarm, with a few minutes to gather his thoughts in the quiet of his Delmar, New York, home. Peter was a fixture in the local legal community, serving as a state Appellate Division court clerk. Peter got out of bed, walked to the bathroom, and stood at the sink.  He then made his way to the kitchen to pack his lunch for the day, just like any other workday. He always enjoyed the quiet mornings before the day started. He performed his morning routine like he always did. He started to load the dishwasher. He packed his lunch. He even wrote a check to pay a parking ticket.  Peter was known as someone you could count on to be there every day, doing his job no matter what. So when Peter failed to show up to work, one of his coworkers was sent to his home to check on him. When he arrived at the Porco home, something immediately stood out. The house was eerily quiet, the blinds drawn. He tried calling the landline. No answer. He called the police.  Officers arrived on the scene and approached the front door. He noticed something strange: a smear of blood on the doorknob, small droplets trailing down the porch.  The front door was slightly ajar. With a sense of dread, Officers opened the door. And that's when he saw it. Peter Porco was on the ground, his face covered in blood and his eyes wide open. Peter was dead. On this episode of Eat Drink Smoke Happy Hour, Tony Katz and Fingers Malloy light up the Perla Del Mar Maduro Double Toro from J.C. Newman and make the case for why this box-pressed Connecticut Broadleaf cigar belongs in the conversation whenever you’re talking about budget-friendly smokes that actually deliver. At around $7.50 a stick, the guys break down the cigar’s broadleaf richness, spice, cedar, earth, and medium-to-full profile, while also talking through who it’s for, when it works best, and why keeping notes on your cigars can help you figure out your palate over time. They also suffer through a brutal Gas Station Finds review of Reese’s White Eggs, a candy so bad it nearly wrecks the entire cigar experience, and maybe the trust between man and peanut butter forever. Along the way, the guys get into overpriced lighters versus cheap torches, Walmart’s digital shelf labels, and the fear of dynamic pricing, a massive late-winter storm hammering the Upper Peninsula, a report on rising death rates among Gen X and elder millennials, delayed colonoscopies, COVID quarantine memories, and why Tony is now ordering an entire cow from Defiance Beef. This week on Practically Pastoring, Andrew sits down with Tim, Delmar, and Jeff for a wide-ranging conversation that starts with a tough pastoral leadership question and ends with Holy Week and Easter check-ins.Question 1 is a sticky restoration situation: a man who confessed an emotional affair, continued the relationship for a year during a messy divorce, and has been out of meaningful church membership for years, now wants to rejoin the church while also continuing to “preach out.” The guys dig into the difference between membership and leadership, forgiveness and trust, gifting and qualification, and what a clear restoration pathway should include. They also talk about how to guard against implied endorsement when someone is eager to get back on a platform. Then the crew pivots to Holy Week plans, Easter traditions, and what each church is doing this year, including Lakeview's big tent weekend, Good Friday plans, and the practical realities of big Sundays, food trucks, and yes, counting dogs.SponsorChurch Merch, promotionsguide.com/churchmerch Key ideas from the episodeMembership and leadership are not the same thingForgiveness can be immediate, trust takes timeA restoration plan should be written, measurable, and elder-ledFaithful church membership and submission matter before public ministryChurches should clarify the difference between preaching and testimony sharingHoly Week is coming fast, and pastors are doing what pastors do: improvise, laugh, and carry on
