Fall is here.  Are you getting enough Vitamin D?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Vitamin D is absorbed through sunlight and certain foods and is necessary for bone and heart health.  Without it, the body can't absorb calcium. Due to a lack of sunlight, Vitamin D deficiency peaks during Fall and Winter. Being deficient can cause symptoms like fatigue, back pain, depression, and hair loss.  Having a deficiency can even increase the chance of developing Rickets, childhood asthma, and certain types of cancers.  Talk to your doctor if you're experiencing symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency.  A simple blood test can help your doctor determine if supplements are needed.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. When's the best time to eat: before or after a workout?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  New research out of Universities of Bath and Birmingham suggests that eating after a workout may be more beneficial than eating before.  The researchers studied three different groups.  The first group ate breakfast before exercise, the second ate after exercise, and the third group didn't make any changes.  All three groups were given the same meal.  The group that ate after exercise burned up to twice as much fat than the group that ate before.  Why? Because your body is kicked into fasting mode when you sleep.  When you eat before exercising, your body uses the insulin created by eating instead of using stored fat.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. What is Vitamin A?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  Vitamin A is an antioxidant that acts as a hormone to help with organ function and gene expression.  Vitamin A deficiencies can cause nighttime blindness, fertility issues, and dry, bumpy skin.  There are two types of this vitamin, pro and preformed.  Provitamin A is found in orange plant foods.  The body stores this as beta-carotene and then converts it into Vitamin A as needed.  Because the body only creates what it needs, it's impossible to overdose on Provitamin A.  On the other hand, Preformed Vitamin A is found in milk, eggs, and meat.  It's also the type used in supplements.  You can overdose on Preformed Vitamin A, it can become toxic to the body.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. There's a simple formula that can help keep you energized. First start with a healthy lunch. Eating high fat, sugary, or high carb lunches can lead to extreme fatigue within an hour or two. About 1:00 get up and go for a brisk walk. This will get the blood flowing and wake the brain back up. At 3pm have a light snack, like almonds or raw veggies. And perhaps the best advice I can give you is to get up and take screen breaks to prevent eye strain. This simple observation can hold keys to your overall health. Urine should be light yellow and clear. When it's cloudy or discolored, it could be a sign of illness. If your urine is darker than usual it may simply mean you need to drink more water, but brown urine can be a serious sign of liver problems and you need to seek medical attention. There's one plant that you should always have growing at home. Any guesses on what that plant is? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. Aloe Vera is a great plant because it can grow outside in many climates, but it can also thrive in the kitchen window. Now, if you're a cat owner, you will need to keep this out of the reach of your feline since it's toxic to them. For us humans though, aloe vera is the perfect cure for a surface burn from cooking or even a sun burn. You can just cut off a small section of the plant, slice it down the middle of one side and then spread the gel inside over the affected area. Did you know that Aloe also has great benefits for your mouth? While you can't eat it straight from your plant, aloe containing mouth washes are great for reducing plaque, freshening breath, and reducing inflammation of the gum line.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. It doesn't mean you have to be a star athlete, in fact some common daily activities can push you from inactive to active. It's all about not taking the easy way out. Instead of looking for the closest parking space, park at the end of the isle and walk. If you're a parent or grandparent, ditch the stroller and carry the kids. There's no better exercise than lugging fifteen to thirty pounds around. If you're a dog owner, change your strolls to brisk walks of jogs with your furry friend. Noise pollution can interrupt sleep patterns and increase your risk for dementia and inflammation due to stress. Air pollution can affect your skin and cause deeper wrinkles, rashes, pimples, and even uneven skin tone. In one study, air pollution was linked to a 22% increase in dark spots that are often found on the face. If you're not ready to move, there are some ways you can fight back. For noise pollution, good windows and thick drapes can help reduce sounds and light that may keep you awake. Do you or a loved one suffer from a food allergy?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Milk, eggs, and peanuts are some of the most common allergies.  New research from Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston found a correlation between gut bacteria and food allergies.  Turns out, when certain strains of bacteria are missing, a person is more likely to have a certain food allergy.  Making these bacteria essential for proper digestion.  They work by triggering T-cells in the immune system and altering their state, so that they don't cause an immune reaction to that particular food.  Private companies are working on bacteria compositions for human trials—making food allergy treatments possible in as soon as 5 years.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Women—do you sleep in a dark room?  If not, you may want to start.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  New research from the NIH found that women who are exposed to artificial light during sleep, whether it be from TV or a turned-on light, have a higher risk of becoming obese.  The research included more than 43,000 women and spanned over 5 and half years.  They not only found it can lead to obesity, but also large amounts of light in a participant's sleep environment led to a higher BMI and waist to hip ratio.  Sleep durations were also shorter and healthy eating choices were lower in these individuals.   You may want to start turning off the TV and making sure your room is dark before falling asleep.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you a dog lover?  If so, I'm about to give you another reason to love them even more.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and people often believe that they can “sniff out” disease. Unlike humans who have 5 million olfactory receptors, beagles have 225 million.  Researchers from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine used this to their advantage and trained three beagles to “sniff out” non-small cell lung cancer in blood samples.  The beagles were able to successfully identify the presence of cancer with over 95% specificity.  Next, the researchers plan to train the dogs how to sniff out other forms of cancer-- not just from blood samples, but also from breath samples.  Maybe dogs really are “man's best friend”.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Autism is on the rise and scientists may have linked it to consumption of processed foods.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Previous research found that autistic children lack beneficial strains of bacteria in their gut microbiome.  Because of this, a lot of autistic children struggle with constipation, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.  A new study out of University of Central Florida studied the link between propionic acid, a common food preservative, and autism.  In the study, too much propionic acid in the gut lining led to a buildup of glial cells, which damaged molecular pathways that inhibited neurons from sending information to the body.  Researchers also found that pregnant women who eat high amounts of processed foods put their unborn babies at risk for autism.
