E.200 Resilience Beyond Traditional Therapy: Journey Through Trauma and Recovery

Send us a textWhat happens when a decorated Naval Lieutenant Commander, triple-boarded physician, and healthcare executive exhausts every conventional treatment for his debilitating PTSD? Dr. Charles Powell takes us on his extraordinary journey from the frontlines of military medicine to the cutting edge of psychedelic healing. After 16 years of military service and building a successful healthcare organization, Dr. Powell found himself trapped in a cycle of night terrors, sleep paralysis, and emotional numbness that traditional medications couldn't touch. His lowest point came after selling his company and contracting COVID, when he finally understood how someone's mind could contemplate suicide. The surprising source of his healing path? His tattoo artist, who introduced him to alternative treatments including ibogaine. With the scientific rigor of a physician and the desperation of someone who'd tried everything else, Dr. Powell researched psychedelic medicine and eventually underwent treatment in Mexico. The results transformed not just his symptoms but his entire perspective on healing. Now medication-free and at peace, he's channeled his experience into creating "Healing Heroes: No Mind Left Behind," a powerful docuseries following six veterans through a comprehensive healing program combining psychedelic medicine with sound therapy, meditation, and other modalities. The most touching outcome? Hearing a participant's child say, "Thanks for giving me my daddy back." This podcast explores how trauma treatment might evolve beyond symptom management to true healing, challenging our understanding of mental health care and recovery. Whether you're struggling with trauma or supporting someone who is, this conversation opens doors to possibilities that conventional medicine often overlooks.Don't miss this raw, honest discussion about finding healing in unexpected places and the profound transformation that becomes possible when we approach trauma with innovative, open-minded strategies. Dr. Powell's journey reminds us that sometimes the most powerful healing comes from sources we least expect.Go to www.healingheroes.com/ for more information on Charlie, his docuseries, and all other endeavors mentioned in the podcast. Freed.ai: We'll Do Your SOAP Notes!Freed AI converts conversations into SOAP note.Use code Steve50 for $50 off the 1st month!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. In this episode of Next Step Leadership, Tracy and Chris continue their conversation with Charles Powell. It's a deep story about life—about a life of wounds and braces and pain. Today's leaders can only lead correctly when first applying the importance of self-care and deep healing. Dangerous Skills: A Memoir of the Me You Never Knew is the new book Charles has written. On its pages, he reveals years of questions, of conflict, of near death experiences, of tension, and of the search to know God's plan. Charles could have given up. But he did not. He has endured. And now he invests his energy in helping other people be rescued and find ways to develop their own skills. How can you apply the hopes Charles mentions about finding ways to help people come, learn, grow, and go? How can you have the right friends beside you who will guide you? Who is beside you? How can they have a crucial vote in your life? Your memoir is still being written.https://jaggedrockmedia.com/about/Dangerous Skills Podcast - https://jaggedrockmedia.podbean.comNot In My Town book - https://www.amazon.com/Not-My-Town-Trafficking-Modern-Day/dp/1596693010

Charles Powell of LifeSprings and Jagged Rock Media, is today's guest in Next Step Leadership. Chris Maxwell and Tracy Reynolds have known Charles many years and wanted their podcast's audience to hear his story. Through his work in security, reaching people from human trafficking, studio production, and writing, Charles helps leaders become better aware of their personal formation. As you listen to his story, hear what Charles said about his upcoming book which reveals deep hurt from his past. The braces may have been removed from his legs, but not from his heart. How do your past wounds influence you? How do those scars impact your behavior, your thoughts, and your relationships? Write down what you learned from the story Charles tells. Include steps you should take to move toward healing. The braces on our legs from the past can still impact how we take steps in life. Instead of covering up our deep wounds, we can identify our masks, know God deeply, and find true healing.https://jaggedrockmedia.com/about/https://jaggedrockmedia.podbean.comNot In My Town book - https://www.amazon.com/Not-My-Town-Trafficking-Modern-Day/dp/1596693010

Fasting boosts stem cells and new research out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) shows that Age-related declines in stem cell function can be reversed by a 24-hour fast. The study was done on mice of all ages, but found that regardless of age, a 24 hour fast had a dramatic health benefit. They found evidence that fasting helps the intestinal cells repair themselves, something that is usually harder to do as we age. This may lead to new medications that mimic the fasting process for those who are unable to fast, such as diabetics. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/05/180503142852.htm https://www.facebook.com/stayyoungmediagroup/ https://twitter.com/StayYoungMedia?lang=en https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/staying-young-show-2-0-entertaining-educational-health/id1008910015?mt=2 http://www.stayyoungamerica.com/ Call us at 844-well 100   Segment 2: We're talking about which jobs are best and worst for your health. Show Topic: Vitamins, Minerals, and Other Supplements and What You Need to Know Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson Guest: None   Segment 1: We are often asked about supplements so we thought we'd do a whole show devoted to vitamins, minerals, and other supplements. Difference between a vitamin and a mineral: Vitamins - any of a group of organic compounds that are essential for normal growth and nutrition and are required in small quantities in the diet because they cannot be synthesized by the body. Minerals- a solid inorganic substance of natural occurrence Fat-soluble vs water-soluble Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the fatty tissues of the body and the liver. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble. These are easier to store than water-soluble vitamins, and they can stay in the body as reserves for days, and sometimes months. Absorbed through the intestinal tract with the help of fats, or lipids. Water-soluble vitamins do not stay in the body for long. The body cannot store them. Excreted through the urine. Water-soluble vitamins need to be replaced more often than fat-soluble ones. Vitamin C and all the B vitamins are water soluble. Why doesn't our food contain enough vitamins and minerals? Not all vitamins are created equal Store-brand vs pharmaceutical grade Pharmaceutical Grade products must exceed 99% purity (natural sources) and contain no binders, fillers, excipients, dyes, or unknown substances. Fewer than 3% of the products on the market are pharmaceutical grade.   MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) THAT MUSIC MEANS IT'S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE'RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS. New research from the University of Colorado at Boulder shows that older blood vessels can be repaired in 6 to 8 weeks with antioxidants specifically targeting mitochondria. The study shows that it can take anywhere from 15 to 20 years of aging off, making the blood vessels appear and function like much younger vessels. The study was published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension and once again shows that pharmaceutical-grade supplements could be key in preventing heart disease. In the study, participants took MitoQ, a form of Coenzyme Q that has been modified to cling to the inside of mitochondria inside cells. Read the study! Follow us on Facebook! Tweet us on Twitter! Why an aspirin helps to prevent both a stroke and a heart attack MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) THAT MUSIC MEANS IT'S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE'RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS. This is so counter intuitive. With all the talk we do on the gut microbiome, new research out of Tufts that was published in the journal Experimental Biology shows that wiping out the gut microbiome completely may be exactly what heart failure patients need. Now, this study was done on mice, but it looks promising. The science behind using a broad spectrum antibiotic for 5 weeks to suppress the immune system lies in the fact that heart failure patients see an increase in T-cells that actually cause the heart to enlarge. By wiping out the body's natural ability to heal through swelling and scar tissue, the heart is preserved. Shockingly, the mice who were treated made almost a complete recovery from heart failure. More research is needed, but this is certainly fascinating and may result in a complete re-think of how cardiologists treat heart failure. Read the study! Follow us on Facebook! Tweet us on Twitter! Let's get started with things we wish we knew about health and about life when we were 18. What did our generation get right? Wrong? What do we see is the biggest challenges in life and health for the next generation? MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) THAT MUSIC MEANS IT'S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE'RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS. New research out of UT Southwestern Medical Center and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas shows that middle age exercise can actually protect the heart from aging, reduce damage, and protect the heart from heart failure. Here's what they found: you need to start the exercise before age 65 when the heart has the most ability to repair itself. The exercise needs to be four to five times a week for at least 30 minutes. Warm up and cool down is in addition to that 30 minutes. In the study they looked at 50 participants and divided them into two different groups. After two years, those that had exercised showed 18% improvement in oxygen intake during exercise and greater than 25% improvement in the left ventricular muscle of the heart. My advice, don't put off exercise, start today for a healthier heart tomorrow. Read the study! Follow us on Facebook! Tweet us on Twitter!
