"It's not just about the ride. It's the story, the operations, the people in blue shirts picking up trash. That's the magic." Jason Surrell returns to flip the script and ask me three questions. Our conversation pulled back the curtain on why themed entertainment has captured my curiosity and professional heart. We also talk about my favorite attraction, Flights of Passage. The storytelling embedded in Pandora is a masterclass in immersive design. Jason also got me to talk about Magic Press, the publishing imprint I run through Morgan James. We've got exciting projects ahead, including one I've long promised: my own book. Behind every attraction or book is a story. In fact, sometimes that story is the experience itself. My guest for Episode #307 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Terry Whalin, an accomplished editor and author of more than 60 books, several of which have sold over 100,000 copies. Terry is the owner of Whalin and Associates, a communications firm, and he serves as an acquisitions editor for Morgan James Publishing. Drawing from decades of experience in both writing and publishing, Terry shares a favorite mistake that changed the course of his career—offering valuable insights for first-time authors and seasoned professionals alike. Episode page with video and more His most recent book is 10 Publishing Myths: Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed. Terry's favorite mistake took place in 2007, when a high-profile publishing event jolted him into realizing just how little he was doing to promote his own books. Despite having secured multiple six-figure advances and a long list of published titles, Terry was receiving negative royalty statements—his books weren't earning out. That wake-up call led him to take what he calls 100% responsibility for his own success, adopting a daily commitment to book promotion, content creation, and building an online presence. From that turning point, he launched a blog (now with over 1,700 posts), grew a substantial social media following, and became a consistent voice in the author education space. In the conversation, Terry and Mark explore the myths and realities of book publishing—especially the misconception that a publisher will handle marketing. Terry outlines how today's authors must become active promoters, the importance of building an email list you control, and why giving away ebooks can actually drive print book sales. He also shares hard-earned lessons about evaluating publishers, avoiding scams, and understanding how traditional and independent publishing models differ. Whether you're writing your first book or navigating your next launch, Terry's insights are a masterclass in professional ownership and long-term thinking. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake? Was it just a bad assumption to think publishers would promote your book, or do they sometimes mislead authors? Is the idea that a publisher will handle marketing one of the common myths in publishing? What specific actions did you start taking after realizing you needed to take full responsibility for your book's success? Are you actively guesting on podcasts and using social media today to promote your work? Do social media efforts actually help sell books—or is it more about visibility and exposure? What's your take on claims like “#1 Amazon bestseller”—do those really help authors sell books? Can you explain how the Morgan James model differs from traditional publishing? Why do you ask authors to commit to buying 2,000 copies of their own book? What role does giving away ebooks play in driving print sales? What should authors consider when deciding between traditional, hybrid, or independent publishing? How can aspiring authors avoid getting scammed by predatory publishing companies? What's the role of an acquisitions editor, and how do you evaluate submissions? Do pre-orders really matter for bookstore placement? Why should authors consider writing for magazines or newspapers to build their platform? Do you think authors give up too early on marketing their books? Is building an email list still essential for authors, even in the age of social media? Should authors be cautious about relying too much on platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn?

We know that listening to music can help heal our hearts, but what can it do for the songwriter? In this episode, host Paula Felps talks with Morgan James, a singer and songwriter who has appeared on Broadway stages and with symphony orchestras in addition to writing and recording her own music. While working on her latest album, she and Doug Wamble — her husband and cowriter —were grappling with the devastating illnesses of dear friends. Morgan explains how they put the tangled emotions of uncertainty, grief and loss into a song called I'll Be Holding On, which also has become the album's video centerpiece. In this episode, you'll learn: How songwriting helps her process difficult emotions. Why it was so important to write about the grief she was experiencing. How performing songs helps her work through challenging situations.

In this episode I talk to Morgan James about our collaborative process in creating his, now, multi-award winning show A One Man Circus. I have had the pleasure of hanging virtually with this driven and entrepeneurial showman for the last year and I had a lot of fun exploring and revisiting some of the insights and the ways we arrived at the decisions taken in creating a one hour family show. It's a solo performance as the title points out, yet there is more than one character appearing in the show. If that is surprising to the audinence, they're not nearly as surprised as I, or we, were when another character emerged in the process. The regular episodes of season 2 are about the philosophy behind a way of looking at performance. In episode 41 where I talked to Jay Gilligan and episode 23 where I talked to myself and now this episode with Morgan I find there are patterns and techniques emerging and becoming visible on how the philosophical ideas and the Way manifests itself in the world. ...If you want to help support this podcast it would be tremendous if you wrote a glowing review on iTunes or Spotify. If you want to contact me about anything, including wanting me to collaborate on one of your projects you can reach me on thewayoftheshowman@gmail.comor find out more on the Way of the Showman website. If you find it in you and you have the means to do so, you can suport the podcast financially at:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/captainfrodoSupport the showSupport the show

Dr. Rob Barkett recalls dealing with a patient who was "frantic" about a year ago. The patient, an educator, was urinating blood and convinced he had kidney cancer and only three months to live. The man had done a Google search. Barkett tried to comfort the patient, telling him cancer was "way down the list" of diagnoses related to having blood in the urine. A basic ultrasound revealed a kidney stone. The patient was going to be fine. During his follow-up appointment, the man brought along a poster that said "Don't confuse your Google search with my medical degree." Barkett said that patient's reaction was nothing new. "There's a lot of people that want to use Google," he said. "I ask them what's wrong, and they give me a diagnosis rather than symptoms." Barkett saw a need, and the result was his first book, called "Simple Medicine: No More Google Searches." It came out Feb. 1 through publisher Morgan James. "I decided I am writing a book for the patients and the patients only," Barkett said. "It's not a medical book. It's a reference book." "Simple Medicine" is the title of a new book by Dr. Rob Barkett, a Mansfield physician. "Simple Medicine" describes the most common medical conditions, complaints, screening, medications and medical testing in layman terms to help patients take control of their own health care and challenge their doctor to do the right thing. In an era when too many patients are not receiving appropriate care, "Simple Medicine" teaches that modern medicine does not equate to better medical care. A guide that describes the most common medical problems in easy-to-understand English, "Simple Medicine" inspires patients to challenge their physician and not assume they are getting the standard care of treatment from their doctor. "Simple Medicine" provides an eye into what one's physician is thinking and why they order certain medications or studies while showing physicians how to manage their medical practice. For those tired of the confusing internet searches for medical concerns and symptoms, "Simple Medicine" is the way out. "Through the last several years, I've been getting a gnawing feeling that the patients were not getting the appropriate standard of care," https://www.amazon.com/Simple-Medicine-More-Google-Searches/dp/1631956493

Author John Jarman and Mike have a great conversation about Broken and Redeemed, NEW YORK—August 16, 2022—Morgan James' new release, Broken & Redeemed: Finding Freedom Through Complete Surrender, by John Jarman, is a memoir devotional of brokenness, surrender, and redemption, leading to a deepening of faith. A story of John Jarman's journey to finding redemption in the Grace of God, Broken & Redeemed covers John's troubled childhood and challenging adulthood and teaches individuals how to find true strength in faith. By explaining what “total surrender” to the Lord looks like, Broken & Redeemed shares how vulnerability and selfknowledge lead to a deeper relationship with God. Broken & Redeemed depicts how to overcome an abusive childhood and shows how the Lord uses the least likely to show His grace and glory. Everything has led to where I am. I look back and thank all of the things that didn't work out. You don't always have to “know how.” Just start, you'll figure it out. You never know who's listening and watching you. Be prepared. And always do your best. Sometimes you can get “in” via a different opening. The door isn't always open. Don't let that stop you. Go out on the limb. Have faith. Put yourself out there. Sometimes passing dreams can become real things. Listen to your subconscious. Cut through the bullshit and create your own path. Use others as inspiration but don't try to follow their path - you can't have their path. It's already taken. When your biggest fear comes true, you realize you can and will achieve anyway. Just don't quit. Allow life to humble you. Get to know the process of your passions. Keep creating. Always creating. Don't worry about it being “good.” Just show up! Perfection gets in the way.
