We're starting a brand-new series on the Old Testament book of Jonah. Listen in as we start exploring the lessons we can learn from this reluctant prophet. In the first part of this series, we examine the consequences of disobedience and ask ourselves the hard-hitting question: 'In what area of my life am i running from the word of God?'

In this message from Jonah 1, Pastor Phil Ayres kicks off our new series in the book of Jonah. We run when God calls us out of comfort, when He challenges our prejudice, and when His mercy offends our sense of fairness. But the good news is that even when we run, God still pursues us.

Many people are already somewhat familiar with the story of Jonah - which is not always a good thing. For a lot of us, our understanding of this epic story comes from childhood. But, the version of the book of Jonah that we were given as kids is not the whole story. In the first three sentences of the book we come face to face with the depth and complexity of this powerful book. It requires a different sort of focus and understanding to see that God is using the story of Jonah to reveal our own "Jonah-like" tendencies in our own lives.

A right relationship with God requires running toward repentance, not away from it. Disobedience is costly, and since God is in control, our faith should reflect trust, surrender, and alignment with His will. Scripture: Jonah 1

It's easy to think the Old Testament shows a harsh, angry God, while the New Testament shows a loving, merciful one. But what if God's character — full of mercy, grace, and justice — has always been the same? In today's message, we meet Jonah, a real prophet with a real choice: obey God's call to warn Nineveh… or run. Spoiler: he ran — and many of us still do the same today. Whether it's through avoiding church, ignoring God's Word, or fleeing from hard conversations, running from God only distances us from His heart for restoration and redemption.
