Strengthening the Church to Impact the World
God doesn't change. His words are true. He is completely and totally reliable in every way. While everything else around us changes, there is Someone who does not change. He does not lie, and we can build our lives on His Word, His plan, and His promises. It's a sure deal! The writer of Hebrews said it this way, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” (Heb 13:8). This means that GOD is faithful! We can trust Him. What He says is true. What He said He will do, we know He will do. Moses spoke of how God was faithful to bring Israel through to the Promised Land (Dt 7). David said that the faithfulness of God “reaches to the skies,” (Ps 36:5). The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah both spoke of how faithful God was to them and the nation of Israel. And in our text today, we'll read several times where the Apostle Paul spoke of how faithful God was in it all and through it all. Several modern statistics reveal that this could be the most anxious generation to ever exist. There are many reasons for why this may be the case, but we need to know that worry and anxiety are not just a modern struggle. In fact, Jesus speaks about worry, anxiety and peace many times and so do the other writers of the New Testament. All of this points to a very important truth: our mental health matters. Worry and anxiety have lots of contributing factors which we need to understand, but more than that, we need to understand the promise of Scripture that God will give us His peace in exchange for our anxiety. How do we make that exchange? Well, that is what the Apostle Paul talks about in our passage today! Everyone has friends and family members who either walked away from Jesus or never fully surrendered their heart to Him even though they had opportunities to do so. This reality is heart wrenching and difficult for all of us, and I am sure that we would do anything we could to see our loved ones come back to Jesus. In our passage today, we can clearly see the heart of Christ to bring all people to Himself no matter where they come from or what they have done. As a church, we are taking a stand together to pursue our prodigals until all have returned to Christ! In all human relationships, conflict will emerge at some point because each of us has the capacity to sin. Jesus taught that as Christians we seek to resolve conflict and pursue reconciliation. This is a testimony to who we are in Christ and to whom we allow to direct all of our thoughts and actions. In this passage, we see seven principles for what to do to resolve conflict and reconcile with others. From the time we are born we are all impressionable. There are people we have looked up to whose words and ways have mattered more to us than anyone else. However, not every person in our life, even those we have cherished, is helping us to become who God has called us to be. As followers of Jesus we need to be intentional with who we look up to and listen to because the people that we follow have the greatest impact on who we become. In our passage today, the Apostle Paul gives us an encouragement, a warning and a reminder about the importance of followership in our lives. Easter is the most important holiday for a Christian. It means our hope in Christ is not misplaced. Historically, people have attempted to cover-up the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are plenty of alternative historical narratives, but Jesus did die and there is evidence of his resurrection. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul writes to those who had been heavily influenced by Greek thought and culture. Yet Paul taught that as Christians, it is the character of Jesus that influences and transforms us into the likeness of Christ. As we hunger and thirst for God and grow in His purposes, we can be led by the Holy Spirit and receive true freedom. All of us want God to work powerfully in and through our lives. This is one of the primary reasons that we pray and seek to obey God's Word. But the fact is, we don't always see God do what we want or receive what we have asked Him for through our prayers. Have you ever wondered why? We all have! While we cannot answer “why” for every circumstance, I think it's important to ask if our faith has something to do with it. Some people might say “your faith has nothing to do with God's response to you!” Is that true? Is that really what the Bible teaches? Does our faith or lack of faith play a role in God responding to us? That is the question we will explore today by looking at two very important passages of Scripture. All of us have experienced what it's like to feel stuck where we are but know there is more. We want to grow more, be more, and do more but unfortunately, we allow far too many things to hold us back. What is the most valuable thing that you have? I realize that is a loaded question which can go in many directions because we all have valuable things that we cherish, preserve and protect. But if you were to boil it down to THE most important thing what would that be? In our passage today, the Apostle Paul dives deep into explaining that our relationship with Jesus is worth everything and more valuable than anything. Have you ever heard someone say, “you should be in ministry!” When a comment like this is made it is almost always referring to someone being a pastor or church leader of some kind. Is that what ministry means? The simple answer is NO. The word ministry in the Christian context simply refers to someone serving others in the name of Jesus. That means that every Christian is in ministry and every Christian is a minister. Ministry is not what we do in the church, it's what we do as the church. In our passage today, we will read about a few of the Apostle Paul's friends that engaged in ministry by serving others well. In the Bible, Jesus is described as the light of the world (John 8:12). But Jesus also taught that His followers would be the light in this world (Matthew 5:14-16). For Christians, this means that we are called to show the character of Jesus and share the words of Jesus which is in direct contrast to the backdrop of the world. If we are the light of Christ, then a good question might be – “How bright is your light?” Are you shining the love and life of Jesus or has your light grown dim? In our passage today, the Apostle Paul calls the church to shine bright in a dark world as he highlights a few things that have the power to determine the brightness of our light. When we become Christians, the Bible says that we are born again (John 3:3). This is more than just a good analogy, it means that we are immersed into a whole new life with a new heart, new mind, and a new nature (2 Corinthians 5:17). Although God has given us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3), we still have to grow into spiritual maturity. In theological terms, this process of spiritual growth is referred to as “sanctification.” As Christians we are growing in knowledge, grace, discernment, wisdom, love, and faith (2 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 2:2; Ephesians 4:15; 2 Corinthians 10:15). Our growth in Christ will never end in this life, which means that wherever we are right now is not the end of the road because there is always more. In our passage today, the Apostle Paul encourages the church at Philippi by reminding them that our maturity in Christ starts with God but requires our participation as well. In the world we live in, we as christians are called to live in a way the differs from the culture. Paul models characteristics that differ from past and present culture. As we live in courage, compassion, and consideration, we gain eyes for those who are lost, and receive vision for those that are in need of God's touch, and ultimately activates us to live out our faith publicly. Speaker: Pastor Steve Mickel Scripture: Isaiah 43:19, Acts 21:13, Acts 27:21-26, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, Acts 22:1 Series: Stand Alone Messages Northwest Church - www.nwcfoursquare.org "On mission with Jesus to see the lost saved and disciples made."
Do Christians struggle with being selfish? Of course we do! Even though Jesus has shown us the way of sacrificial love and selflessness, we can still be self-centered and self-focused if we allow ourselves to live by the flesh. If we are truly going to follow Jesus in the way that we live, it will require that we acknowledge selfish tendencies and make selfless choices in both the big and small things in our lives. In our passage today, Paul speaks about denying our internal selfish motives in order to choose a selfless way which is best seen in the life of Jesus Christ. What does it mean to be a faithful Christian? What does that really look like in our world today? The Apostle Paul not only spoke about this specifically, but he embodied it by the way he lived. In the final verses of Philippians chapter 1, Paul exhorted the church to live consistently, unified and fearless, no matter what came against them. All these exhortations remain true for us today as we seek to follow Jesus faithfully. How do we experience freedom from the power and weight of our problems? Our problems are heavy, but they do not have to consistently weigh us down. The apostle Paul walked through many tribulations, yet found joy and freedom in the midst of it. What did he have? what changed? In Christ we can experience more that what the world can give us but we must keep our eyes of Jesus. It can be easy to feel like we aren't growing, things aren't changing, and God isn't doing much in our lives. There are many reasons for why we feel this way, but a lot of it has to do with how we think. The problem we often have is that the process God uses for our development is not as fast or as clear as we would like it to be. But here is the truth: God is at work in our lives right now (Philippians 2:13) and we can be sure that He will finish what He started. In our passage today, we will be encouraged as the Apostle Paul shares his prayerful confidence with the church in Philippi that God is a finisher! The book of Philippians is widely known for a handful of famous passages and its practical encouragement. However, what else do we know about this letter? Who wrote it? Why did they write it? Who was it written to? Do the answers to these questions help us understand and live out what is found in this text? Of course! Today we will explore the context of the book of Philippians and discuss some specific titles that are mentioned in the first few verses. I pray that this simple overview will help us to not overlook details that matter as we seek to understand and follow what Scripture teaches. The story of Christmas is the clearest picture of God's love. He took the initiative and provided a way for us to be in relationship with Him again through Jesus Christ. God loves us so much that He is constantly drawing us to Himself that we might respond with a full surrender. In our passage today we will encounter some men called the “magi” who are looking for the King of the Jews right after the birth of Christ. This story is much more than a historical narrative because it shows us how far God will go to draw us to Himself. The question that we must answer today is how will we respond to such overwhelming love? When God made the world and created human beings, everything was good and there was peace. However, once sin entered the world through disobedience, it caused chaos, division and unrest with God and one another. The arrival of Jesus brought comprehensive peace that has past, present and future implications. True Revival is a demonstration of the power of God and not just a response to human effort. God has all power and desires to meet our needs, set us free, heal our bodies, and most importantly, save our souls. We don't just want His power, we actually need it. In our message today we will discuss how essential the power of God is for the Christian, the Church, and the world around us. A person might ask the question, “Why do Christians need revival?” The simple answer is that God's people, for whatever reason, tend to spiritually decline over time. There are many accounts of this reality throughout the Bible, and I am sure that most of us have seen or experienced this in our own lives as well. God, by His grace, will pour out His Spirit in a fresh way to awaken us to who He is and what He has called us to do. As we read some of the Biblical accounts where God awakened His people, we will find that His Word played a primary role to bring conviction and response to what He was doing. We know that God's Word is alive and still causes hard hearts to soften, dead churches to revive, and all people to encounter the living God in a life-changing way. Speaker: Pastor Ben Dixon Scripture: Hebrews 4:12-13, 2 Chronicles 34:19-21, 2 Chronicles 34:33, Luke 3:10-14, Acts 2:37-39, Isaiah 66:1-2 Sermon Series: We Need Revival For more information visit www.BenDixon.org
It's hard to put into words what it's like when we truly meet Jesus and give Him our lives. To know that we are unconditionally loved, totally forgiven, and fully known is life changing. How can you not love Jesus with everything that you are? This amazing love causes us to respond in loving Him in every way possible. It's why we read the Bible, pray, become part of the church, serve people, share our testimony and the Gospel. It's simple. That's what love is supposed to be like – simple. However, if we are not careful, something can happen along our journey of following Jesus. We can allow other things to take first place in our heart which has a terrible effect upon our relationship with Jesus. When this happens, we truly need a revival of the heart where once again, Jesus becomes first and foremost in our lives. Today, we will study the words of Jesus to the Church in Ephesus about how to come back to what He wants and rightly deserves. When someone says “revival” I am sure that many things come to our mind. The word “revival” is not found in the Bible, but the root word “revive” is used dozens of times. This word comes from a Hebrew word that is used hundreds of times in the Old Testament and is typically translated as, “revive, to live, to make alive, to recover or restore.” So, biblically speaking, a reviving work of God is when a person/people are spiritually awakened after being in a state of spiritual dormancy or stagnation. This “reviving” usually causes people to repent, pray, and renew their commitment to God which brings about fresh love, obedience and passion for Jesus Christ. While revival is something that God does, we certainly play a role in positioning our hearts and minds to receive what God wants to do. This requires a fresh spiritual hunger for more of Him. Are you hungry for God to move in your heart and through your life? That's what we are going to focus on today as we launch our new series, “We Need Revival.” Speaker: Pastor Ben Dixon Scripture: Matthew 5:6, Psalm 34:8, 1 John 2:15-17, Ephesians 5:15-18, Revelation 3:15-16, Psalm 63:1, Matthew 16:24, Matthew 16:25-26 Series: We Need Revival For more information visit www.BenDixon.org
Christianity is all about relationship. We were made for a relationship with God and there is a longing inside every Christian to know Him more and walk with Him closely. If that is true, then how do we draw near to God and stay near? What does it really look like to cultivate a quality relationship with the Lord that goes deeper than any other relationship that we have? In John chapter 15, while Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure, He assured them that their relationship could always be deep and strong. There are many truths and principles that we can draw from this conversation that will also help us as we seek to deepen our friendship with Jesus. Every generation has experienced some sort of tension around political issues and there is no doubt that we are currently experiencing this in our times as well. Christians debate over how much and what kind of political engagement we ought to have as we follow Jesus and His Word faithfully. In the midst of answering the, “what do we do about this” question, we must reflect on the role of prayer as a means to influence political outcomes that allow for the mission of Jesus to flourish. Some people think that prayer is a passive cop-out in the face of political tension but what does the Bible say about this? What should the prayerful posture of the Church look like as we engage political realities in our current times? In our passage today, we will explore the truths that the Apostle Paul told Timothy who was facing difficult situations as he pastored the church in the city of Ephesus. Politics are important, but what's more important is that OUR TRUST is fully and completely in the Lord no matter what. In this message, Pastor Ben explores what it means to truly trust God in politically difficult times. Modern politics are clearly one of the most polarizing topics we could be discussing today. Everywhere we turn, we see our country and world swept up in debates, narratives, and controversy. This clearly shows us that people have very different views. Democrats and Republicans have become more divided in the last 40 years and it has caused a polarity that is sometimes even seen and felt in the Church. As Christians, we cannot allow the political agendas of the world to persuade us into beliefs and behaviors that are contradictory to the way of Jesus. We must think Biblically about politics and always have a Christ-centered lens because we are disciples of Jesus, not of our culture. This means that our way forward is not about choosing a side to follow because we have already chosen a King to serve. According to Pew Research, 65% of Americans say they ‘always' or ‘often' feel exhausted when thinking about politics. I think that statistic is fair and probably how most of us feel when the subject is brought up. In fact, I am sure that some of us have given up when it comes to politics which has probably only made things worse. Today, as we open our series on Jesus & Politics, I want to help answer the question of what politics are and why it should matter, especially for Christians. Have you ever prayed and wondered why your prayers weren't being answered? There are many things that come into our minds when prayers go unanswered. Maybe God didn't hear me? Maybe I don't have enough faith? Maybe I am doing something wrong, and I just don't know what that is? The Bible doesn't answer every question that may come into our minds, but it does give us some answers as to why prayer doesn't always work. In our passage today, James tells us what prayer can do when it's done the right way for the right reason. Every season of life carries both burdens and blessings. We need to remember that when we have difficult days, God doesn't stand on the sidelines of our life and wait for us to figure things out. He already had these days in mind when He inspired the writers of Scripture to give us what we need for the times we will need it. In our passage today, James gives practical steps for several scenarios that we will find ourselves in as life unfolds. None of us have to stay stuck where we are; we can take steps and receive all that God promises as we look to Him for the wisdom we need. Suffering is part of the human experience and all of us will deal with it in one way or another. Yeah, you heard me right, there is no way out of some suffering in our life. But what if I told you that there is a way to walk through your suffering that shows what you believe, who you trust and can serve as an example for those that are watching your life? Would that change how you suffer? I am sure it would. In our passage today, James speaks directly to first-century Christians who have suffered the loss of wages, jobs, righteous rulings in court, and other forms of discrimination for being poor, Jewish, and Christian. As a result of this, James gives some clarity on how to handle suffering when you can't change your reality. When we talk about “the rich” who comes to your mind? Is it Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Bill Gates (Microsoft), or maybe Elon Musk (Tesla and SpaceX)? While these people are certainly the most rich today, did you know that most Americans have more and live better than 94 percent of the rest of the world? I think it's fair to say that the Biblical writers would have considered most of us to be rich just because of the world that they came from. This means that every warning and command concerning the rich and wealthy is applicable for all of us today. Something that we will learn from our passage is that being rich in this world is not necessarily the blessing that we often think that it is. In fact, James pronounces a very serious judgment upon those who are rich which serves as a warning for us in just how deceitful riches can be if we are not surrendered to Jesus and intentional with all that we have. Everyone has dreams, hopes, and aspirations that they want to see fulfilled in their life. These dreams are often the causation for how we plan out what our life will look like. All of this may not be wrong in and of itself, but the question we must answer is, “Where is God in all of my plans?” Does our plan for our life factor in God's plan for our life? Have we even considered if how we are living or what we are planning is what He wants, or do we persist with what we want for various reasons? In our passage today, James confronts the kind of thinking that causes people to speak and act without considering God's will first and foremost. This kind of thinking can easily slip in if we are not careful, but we know that God has so much more for us as we pause and consider what He wants instead of just what we want. While hearing God's voice is a privilege, it also comes with great responsibility. What we do with what God says is incredibly important. I want to stress this point because my hope is that we would never become casual with anything that God says to us. Far too many Christians believe that their role in what God is doing doesn't matter. What a lie. We matter. What we do matters. What we choose not to do matters. There are countless people that will be impacted by how we respond to God's voice. We need to shake off any false notions that our choices don't matter much because God is at work, and He wants to work through all of us! Christians are judgmental—right?! At least that's the prevailing cultural narrative regarding the Church. In fact, this perspective is so prevalent that we hear this statement come from those who profess to be Christians themselves. As we look at our passage today, we will clearly see that having a judgmental heart is not some new thing that Christians struggle with.
