In this episode of the Canary Cast, Florian Hagenbuch, Co-Founder and General partner at Canary, sits down with Jose Gedeon, co-founder and CEO of Cobre, a Colombian fintech building the real-time B2B payments and cross-border infrastructure powering finance teams across Latin America. From his early fascination with M-Pesa’s case at the University of Pennsylvania, to failed attempts at building his own mobile money business in Colombia, a stint as a consultant at McKinsey New York, and a role at Oyo in Mexico, José shares how each chapter of his journey shaped the vision for Cobre. What started as white-label wallets for meal vouchers during the pandemic evolved into Colombia’s leading real-time B2B payments platform, now expanding rapidly into Mexico and cross-border flows. During the episode, José reflects on the unique challenges of scaling a fintech in LatAm, the pivotal customer moments that unlocked entirely new business lines, and the ambition of turning Cobre into the default infrastructure for payments across the region. In this episode, we dive into: From White-Label Wallets to Infrastructure: How Cobre pivoted from building digital wallets for meal vouchers into real-time B2B payments and treasury management. Cross-Border Breakthroughs: The customer emergency that sparked Cobre’s cross-border product and how it led to a new revenue line. The Role of Stablecoins: Why stablecoins are becoming increasingly relevant in illiquid or high-cost currency corridors like Colombia, Turkey, and Argentina. Scaling in Mexico: How Cobre reached $100M in monthly volume in only 8 months in Mexico—10x faster than in Colombia. Vision for the Future: Why Jose believes it’s still “day zero” for Cobre and how the company aims to become the de facto B2B payment infrastructure for LatAm. Founder Lessons: Biggest mistakes, wins, and the cultural values that define the Cobre team. Whether you’re a founder, operator, or fintech enthusiast, this episode offers a masterclass in product pivots, client-focused culture, scaling infrastructure in emerging markets, and building with ambition in one of the most dynamic regions in the world. Tune in to hear how Cobre is not only modernizing payments in Colombia and Mexico, but also shaping the future of financial infrastructure across Latin America. Guest: Jose GedeonJose is the co-founder and CEO of Cobre, a fintech modernizing B2B payments and cross-border infrastructure in Latin America. Cobre moves billions annually, already processing ~3% of Colombia’s GDP, and recently raised its Series B led by Oak HC/FT, with participation from Canary and other global investors. Read, Write, Own by Chris DixonTranscrição do Episódio em Português: Hoje, estamos movimentando cerca de 3% do PIB da Colômbia dentro da Cobre.É um número muito grande.Mas, ao mesmo tempo, também é pequeno.Copo meio cheio, copo meio vazio. As empresas estavam forçadas a mudar. José:Sim, me formei em 2018.

In the third episode of Season Two of Soundscapes NYC, hosts Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares take you on an immersive journey through the hot nights and wild streets of Lower Manhattan during the Seventies. For this episode, Jesse Rifkin, a New York-based music historian and the owner and sole operator of Walk on the Wild Side Tours NYC, designed a specialized tour for Soundscapes NYC that explores key venues in the history of disco. Clubs like Paradise Garage, Nicky Siano's Gallery, and repurposed residential spaces like David Mancuso's Loft were all critical incubators of the sound and culture we call disco today. This is dense cultural geography, hardly more than one square mile, within and around a neighborhood known today as “Soho”. But in the Seventies it was sometimes known as “Hell's Hundred Acres” do to the propensity of building collapses and fires among the old hotels and loft builds that constellated the area. Soundscapes NYC welcomes back Jesse Rifkin, who appeared on Season One on the queer history of punk culture (S1.E4. Sounds of the City Collapsing). Rifkin is the author of This Must Be the Place: Music, Community, and Vanished Spaces in New York City (Hanover Square Press, 2023), and his work has been celebrated in the New York Times, Conde Nast Traveller, among others. His Substack (Walk on the Wild Side NYC) is a trove of incisive music criticism and revealing interviews with dynamic artists from the Seventies to today. FREE DOWNLOAD How YOU Can Make A FORTUNE From Buy-To-Lethttps://bit.ly/BTLReport-POD One of Kevin's most asked questions is how to add value to a rental property, in this episode he explores various ways you can do this including 5 fundamentals you need to focus on. ***FREE DOWNLOAD*** How YOU Can Make A FORTUNE From Buy-To-Let http://bit.ly/BTLReport-YT KEY TAKEAWAYS Buy something where you know you can add value, where there is space for improvements, particularly focusing on the kitchen and bathroom. Probably one of the most effective ways to add value is to think about the internal layout of the property and how you can make this work better and more valuable. E.g turning a 2 bed into a 3 bed house; this can add up to 25% of the equity. Carpets and decoration are the final two touches for every room in the property that adds value. Loft conversions and basement conversions can add significant value to a property, especially in cities. BEST MOMENTS “nice bathrooms, nice kitchens, they're going to give you highest impact on value and highest impact on rental income” “You don't have to spend a huge amount of money” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.progressiveproperty.co.uk https://kevinmcdonnell.co.uk ***FREE DOWNLOAD*** How YOU Can Make A FORTUNE From Buy-To-Let http://bit.ly/BTLReport-YT ABOUT THE HOST Kevin McDonnell is a Speaker, Author, Mentor & Professional Property Investor. This week, J. and Dame hit the road and take Shoptalkpodcast on location to a posh loft in the heart of Detroit. The fellas catch up with Baby Mark, who just dropped three new singles and had a lot to say about the creative process behind them. We chopped it up about our week—the highs, the lows, and the mindset it takes to stay positive. We also dove into how Detroit views celebrity, J. told a wild story about a “spy bird,” and of course, there was plenty more foolishness to go around. As always, thanks for tapping in. Raphi Fulcher's Musical Journey and Life as a Black Orthodox Jew In this episode, Raphi Fulcher, also known as Hebrew, discusses his unique background and perspectives. Growing up as the youngest of six children to parents who converted to Judaism in the 1960s, Raphi shares his experiences moving across different states and eventually studying in Israel. Currently a project manager in digital marketing, Raphi is also a passionate musician. He talks about his musical influences, family background in music, and the transformative experience of performing live. Raphi sheds light on the challenges of dating within the Orthodox Jewish community as a Black man and the importance of finding a partner who understands and is prepared for those challenges. He also discusses the significance of Torah values and the importance of addressing 'otherness' in the Jewish community. Additionally, Raphi shares insights into his music career, Jewish music festivals, and his aspirations to create music that heals and educates. 00:00 Introduction and Background 00:36 Religious and Professional Journey 03:05 Musical Beginnings 04:20 First Performance and Health Struggles 07:24 Stage Name and Identity 09:00 Growing Up Orthodox 20:46 Dating Challenges 29:14 Navigating Relationships and Conversion 30:44 Qualities I'm Looking for in a Partner 32:24 Challenges in Finding the Right Match 35:10 The Birth of a Jewish Music Festival 37:14 Balancing Tradition and Modernity in Music 43:21 The Deeper Meaning of Cain and Hevel 48:45 Practical Advice for Facing Fear 51:39 Sharing My Music and Inspirations https://www.hebromusic.com https://www.instagram.com/hebromusic/ https://www.youtube.com/@Hebromusic www.JewishCoffeeHouse.com franciskakay@gmail.com About Raphi: Raphi Fulcher is a man on a mission, a soldier, or a “soulja,” if you will, in the army of Hashem. So intent is he on spreading his message of acceptance and brotherhood through rap and hip hop music, that he performs under the name Hebro, a Fulcher-ism that declares his intent to use his artistic abilities to better the world as he serves in the ranks of God's military. The youngest of six children born to African-American parents who converted to Judaism 43 years ago under the guidance of Rabbi J.J. Hecht, the then-assistant to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Fulcher hails from a family of gifted vocalists. The singer, songwriter, rapper and producer lived in Crown Heights until he was four and spent his formative years in North Carolina, St. Louis and Israel. It was during his time as a student at Queens College that Fulcher, whose full name is Raphael Ohr Chayim, discovered his gift for singing publicly. “I was on the board at Chabad of Queens College and we staged musical events. I found that I had a deep passion for live performance,” Fulcher told The Jewish Link. After spending a Lag B'omer at the Chevra Ahavas Yisroel synagogue, Fulcher found himself falling in love with Crown Heights and he spent the next five years there, enjoying the unique warmth of the community and honing his musical voice. Deeply enamored with rap, hip hop, reggae and R&B music, Fulcher decided that the time had come to bring those genres to Jewish audiences, albeit with all new lyrics. “Just the music and the rhythm are very powerful and could resonate with a lot of people if we had positive, uplifting content,” said Fulcher, who previously performed under the name Hebro. “I kept imagining how powerful it would be if I added a real element that would allow listeners to vibe out to the rhythm, with lyrics that have meaning and purpose. I don't think you can deny that it is Jewish music.” Having stretched his musical wings on stage with Matisyahu, Nissim Black, Moshav Band, Lipa Schmeltzer, Zusha and others, Fulcher decided three years ago that it was time to share his God given gifts with the world in a debut EP titled Genesis. “It is an album that is inspired by Tehillim, by King David's work,” said Fulcher. “When I imagine David Hamelech performing during his life, I imagine that his music had rhythm and spirit and with all due respect, I don't think it sounded like the typical 'Jewish' music we hear today in the orthodox world” Genesis, featuring seven original compositions, will be released on March 17th, Rosh Chodesh Nissan. Fulcher is looking forward to sharing his music at a release party taking place at The Loft and Rooftop at 83 Essex Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side of Manhattan which will also feature up and coming talents Izzy Gilden, DJ Kamilly, Simple Man and others. His soon to be released Souljass music video, featuring one of the tracks on the EP, tells the story of Cain and Hevel, which Fulcher sees as the start of baseless hatred in the world. “I want to shed light on being fearful of what we don't control or understand,” said Fulcher. “There is a message there in Cain's conversation with Hashem, when he says he doesn't know where his brother is. If we focused on the other person, if we were conscious of one another, and were tolerant of each other, we would be able to bring about the ultimate redemption.” Still, Fulcher, a resident of the Wesley Hills section of Monsey, is subtle with his messaging. “I consider myself a chasid of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and his teachings and his mission,” said Fulcher. “That is what I wanted to do with this album of songs about redemption and while I may not mention that concept by name, it is there in broader terms and in a way that will allow more people to enjoy the music.” With an edgy style that is simultaneously youthful and appealing, Fulcher is a crossover artist who can appeal to the masses, but also has his priorities straight. Passionate about his music, he is even more dedicated to his religious observance. As someone with close ties to Chabad, Fulcher feels strongly about his own obligation to improve the lives of others. “My ultimate mission with my music is to do my part to bring redemption,” explained Fulcher. “I consider this to be my shlichut and I believe each of us has to bring the world to a higher state of perfection by doing chesed, by reaching out and not just harboring light, but shining light out onto the world.” Having been the only African-American student in the yeshivos he attended since first grade wasn't always easy, admitted Fulcher, but it was an experience that prepared him for his future. “It was challenging for myself and for my peers,” said Fulcher. “It was a reality that none of them had ever dealt with before and it was new for them. Still, growing up as an African-American Jew in a white Orthodox Jewish world gave me the experience to understand the potential of breaking down the barriers of fear and difference while creating an opportunity for growth. B'nei Yisrael come in all shapes and colors and sizes and the sooner we can all handle that the sooner we will all be b'simcha.”
We sometimes forget that no Gentiles (i.e., non-Jewish folks) were present to receive the pouring out of the Holy Spirit during the first Pentecost. To be sure, eventually there would be Gentile followers of the Way of Jesus, and those Gentiles would be baptized with the fire of the Holy Spirit. The story of the Gentile Pentecost teaches us that, despite our perceptions of ourselves, we are not qualified to determine who is and isn't welcome at God's table. This Sunday, we are celebrating Youth Sunday in The Loft. The Grapple youth will participate in worship by leading prayer, reading scripture, and playing with the handbells. We are also excited that three of our graduating high school seniors, Oz, Lauren, and Will, will offer their reflections on the role that Westwood UMC has played in their lives. We hope that you can join us as we celebrate our amazing youth and youth leadership. www.TheLoftLA.org
"Feel Good Now" Alright, let's get the spicy stuff out of the way; yes, the Loft split up onstage in front of 3,000 people while opening for the Colorfield at the Hammersmith Palais. That happened. But a lot happened before and a lot has happened after, so let me catch you up. Formed in 1980, The Loft were one of the first bands signed to Alan McGee's Creation Records. Their wistful pop had jangle and nerve and they tore out of the gates cramming their resume with notable achievements for McGee's lable like being the first Creation band to appear on television, the first top the indie singles chart, the first to be invited on to a major UK tour and the first to record a Janice Long BBC radio session. The Loft were poised to be a huge band, but the public split came before their first album was ever released and so fans could only be left to wonder what might have been had they been able to just get a record on the shelves. Compilations like Magpie Eyes and Once Around The Fair were released over the years, but as we know, great as they may be, it's not the same thing. Singer Pete Astor and drummer Dave Morgan went on the form the Weather Prophets, while guitarist Andy Strickland formed The Caretaker Race and bassist Bill Prince formed The Wishing Stones. Happily, the ice that forms after an argument started to thaw and the Loft slowly drifted back to each other. I'll let Andy and Pete tell you that story, but let me just say this. We're so lucky that it did because the band's debut album is one we finally get to hear and it was well worth the wait. The ten songs on Everything Changes, Everything Stays The Same are perfectly crafted pop gems with spry rhythms, jangling beauty and melodic mastery. I love this record. Pete's been on the show before, and he's a lovely guy to chat with, but having him back with Andy was a real treat. www.tapeterecords.de (https://www.tapeterecords.de) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
