I'll pretty much tell anyone who will listen that I'm in the best shape of my life at age 57 – and I feel the best is yet to come.  And to be fair I never set the bar very high earlier in my life from a fitness perspective.  And if you act even just a little bit interested – maybe you're just being polite – I'll tell you all about how I did it and what I've learned along the way - and you might in fact find it difficult to shut me up.  I just can't help myself, I'm very passionate about healthy aging and I want to spread the message. And while it might be impressive to be in the best shape of your life in your fifties, what about someone in their sixties?  Or maybe even in their seventies – now that would be remarkable!  But what about an 80-year-old?  Is it possible to be eighty and be in the best shape of your life?My guest today is James P Owen.  After a successful 35 year Wall Street career, Jim found new purpose as an author, speaker and social entrepreneur.  His book Cowboy Ethics has sold over 160,000 copies and is still going strong.  But despite all of Jim's successes, he found himself at 70 years old in very poor health.  He was close to 50 pounds overweight and suffered from crippling back pain.  Today at age 80 Jim is in the best shape of his life and has become an evangelist for healthy aging.  He is the author of the book Just Move: A New Approach to Fitness After 50, and the Producer of the docu-series titled The Art of Aging Well.   You can learn more about Jim via the following resources:Cowboy Ethics Website - http://cowboyethics.org/cowboy-ethics/Just Move Book - https://www.amazon.com/Just-Move-Approach-Fitness-After/dp/1426218656/The Art of Aging Well Website (and film) - https://theartofagingwell.com/

In this episode we speak with James P. Owen about the benefits of exercising at ALL ages and why it's never too late to start. After a successful 35-year Wall Street career, James P. Owen found new purpose in being an author, inspirational speaker, and social entrepreneur. His book, Cowboy Ethics, a best-seller with more than 150,000 copies in circulation, and two follow-up volumes, Cowboy Values and The Try, put a spotlight on the importance of shared values and personal character in our society. Now Jim has expanded his focus, becoming a passionate evangelist for fitness as a way of life. In his speaking engagements, he reminds audiences that being in shape helps older adults stay mobile, active, and independent, enabling a quality of life no amount of money can buy. Fitness could also play an important role in combatting serious chronic diseases and controlling health care costs as our nation’s over-50 population balloons. Jim shares this message in his newest book, Just Move: A New Approach to Fitness After 50 (National Geographic, September 2017), a realistic fitness guide that puts the reader in charge as it inspires, empowers and informs without overwhelming, providing a flexible, step-by-step program readers can tailor to their own specific needs. The Wall Street Journal named Just Move! one of the top best books for healthy aging for 2017. Learning Points: 1. How do our thoughts about aging limit us? 2. Why is movement important as we age? 3. How do we start a new fitness plan? Website Address www.theartofagingwell.com

Jim Owen is 78 years old and he is in awesome shape. He works out regularly and part of his routine is doing three sets of 50 push-ups. That’s pretty amazing for a man of his age. But for most of his life he was a self-described, "certified couch potato." On his 70th birthday, his life changed when he watched a video of himself going on stage to give a speech. "My shoulders were hunched over. My knees were shot, so I was sort of shuffling along. And I had chronic back problems. It was humiliating." Jim lost 50 pounds, hired an experienced trainer and got serious about working out. And the impact on his life has been incredible. He wanted to share his new passion with others so he wrote and published a book called “Just Move: A New Approach to Fitness After 50.” For anyone who has ever said late in life, "Gee, I wish I could get in shape," this book is for you. Fitness after fifty was never something that occurred to veteran financier James P. Owen, during his hectic life in corporate America. But when he turned seventy, the former Wall Street rainmaker and author of the best-selling book, Cowboy Ethics, had an epiphany. He discovered he could move. Jim founded the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership to spread the message that “we can all be heroes in our own lives,” but it was not until relatively late in life that he says he discovered his true purpose. Over the past seven years he has transformed his life, applying his much-lauded ‘rules of the west’ to a disciplined fitness regime. The result is a body and lifestyle that defies his age and a new book, Just Move: A New Approach to Fitness After 50, in which Jim shares his wisdom. In this LLAMA podcast interview he explains how “fighting off old age” involves shadowboxing, weightlifting, walking and a focus on "functional fitness."
