This episode breaks down fear in two parts: the fear of writing and the fear of sharing written work. Sometimes it's terrifying sharing pieces of ourselves. It's safer to stay in our comfort zone where we are safe from judgment; however this protection can become its own prison. Using Kendrick Lamar's song “Opposites Attract,” Lamont Carey's Poem “She Says She Loves Me,” the folk story of the scorpion and the frog, and my own personal poem, I deconstruct the root of truth and why it matters to be honest. Much love to all those who are tuning in, thank you for listening. You can follow me on Instagram @ jorgequintanapoetrySupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme2/jorgeq18)

Lamont Carey grew up in an impoverished, crime-infested area of Washington DC. By the time he was 11 years old, he was heavily involved in drug dealing. Then he became involved in protecting his criminal enterprises with firearms. He served his sentence inside of the DC criminal justice system, eventually transferring into high-security prisons in the federal system. While confined in the high-security penitentiary in Allenwood, Lamont made a decision to transform his life. He participated in classes and programs. After earning his GED, Lamont enrolled in business courses in college--learning that he already understood principles of marketing, customer service, and product management. Lamont simply had to transform his skills to build legitimate enterprises rather than criminal enterprises. That mind shift allowed Lamont to return to society successfully, leading several enterprises that have allowed him to become a role model for anyone who wants to overcome struggle and live successfully.   Contact Lamont through his websites that include: ContactVisits.org LacareyEnterprises.com Follow him on Twitter: @ContactVisits and @LamontCarey Get his books through Amazon Help spread the word on why we should reform our prison system by subscribing, rating, and reviewing the Earning Freedom podcast on iTunes. "Before the Transition is the Transformation...Improving the lives of ex-offenders and at-risk youth" Valerie and Rev. Ray talk with Mr. Lamont Carey, Founder and Executive Director of Contact Visits, a nonprofit organization assisting at-risk youth and ex-offenders. Contact Visits was founded by Lamont Carey on June 7, 2001.  The vision to form this company was birthed while Lamont was serving his own multi-year prison term. When preparing for release, Mr. Carey took classes in business management and non-profit management, marketing, accounting, finance, and other business-related topics. Additionally, he was offered stress and anger management, decision- making, substance abuse prevention, life skills, and other courses related to preparing to re-enter society that he felt were not effective. Mr. Carey's first responsibility with Contact Visits was to develop more effective programs to address the needs and issues surrounding soon-to-be released felons, ex-convicts, and troubled youth. He is also responsible for the daily management of all operations, finding locations for all three facilities, hiring and managing staff, grant writing and fundraising, bookkeeping, contract management, public relations, interaction with federal and local government agencies as well as other non-profit service providers, budgeting, sourcing of training and educational personnel, creation of curriculum programs, and marketing.
