Lindsay Clancy has told one person the same account for three years, and on Day 17 of her murder trial that person finally testified. Hospital chaplain Sheila Cavanaugh — roughly two hundred visits at Tewksbury Hospital, plus fourteen at Brigham and Women's — took the stand for about twenty minutes, and those minutes may shape the verdict more than any expert who preceded her.Cavanaugh testified that Clancy described a persistent male voice commanding her to kill her children and then herself, and that Clancy's first words after her breathing tube came out were about her children being safe. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague countered that Cavanaugh's notes never documented a single mention of any voice, and Cavanaugh conceded the point. The stakes of that exchange are structural: Clancy admits the acts, so the entire trial is her state of mind, and Massachusetts law requires the Commonwealth to prove her criminal responsibility beyond a reasonable doubt. The state's roughly seventy witnesses described a devoted nurse and mother. Its own phone evidence shows searches about hallucinations, psychosis, and postpartum psychosis symptoms before the killings — evidence Tony argues cuts directly against the theory that the voice was invented afterward.Closing arguments are expected the week of August 24, and deliberations will follow soon after. I've spoken to Kash Shaikh before. Kash's mission-driven attitude is infectious, and his enthusiasm is contagious. You may remember him from his two previous appearances on the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast. In both episodes, Kash talked about his role as founder and CEO of Baseball United. This visit is different — Kash is different. For the first time in person, I spoke with Kash, now the Chief Marketing Officer for Perfect Game — the largest amateur baseball organization in the country. Kash's mission is to grow PG both domestically and internationally.Perfect Game is one of those ubiquitous organizations involved in everything amateur baseball. I bet you the majority of all players in MLB have had some interaction with PG at some point in their career. But do you really know how involved Perfect Game is in setting the standard for a multi-billion-dollar youth baseball industry? Let me tell you, PG is heavily involved. But does that mean PG is responsible for the current travel ball structure? Is PG responsible for the cost of every travel organization? The actions of every travel coach? They can't possibly be responsible for all of that, right? What I can share is that PG takes the hit for a lot of things, good and bad, within the travel ball ecosystem. The honest answer is more complex, so I'll let Kash explain. PG is indeed the leader within amateur baseball. PG's decisions affect the entire travel ball landscape. Testimony resumed today from Rebecca Jollotta, the psychiatric nurse practitioner certified by Postpartum Support International, in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, and attorney Kevin Reddington is mounting an insanity defense centered on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.Coming out of the morning recess, Jollotta detailed an extended thread of MyChart messages with Clancy, part of a pattern of communication that stretched well beyond the office visits. She told jurors that at a December 6, 2022 appointment attended by both Lindsay and Patrick Clancy, she floated the possibility of an underlying bipolar disorder. Jollotta said her concern for Clancy's mental health was significant enough that she wanted to be seeing her weekly — and that Lindsay had reported suicidal ideation, though notably never on the days Jollotta actually examined her.Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the defense's mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Patrick Clancy was out of the home running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The Saint of the day is Saint Alphonsus Liguori Saint Alphonsus Liguori's Story Moral theology, Vatican II said, should be more thoroughly nourished by Scripture, and show the nobility of the Christian vocation of the faithful and their obligation to bring forth fruit in charity for the life of the world. Alphonsus, declared patron of moral theologians by Pius XII in 1950, would rejoice in that statement. In his day, Alphonsus Liguori fought for the liberation of moral theology from the rigidity of Jansenism. His moral theology, which went through 60 editions in the century following him, concentrated on the practical and concrete problems of pastors and confessors. If a certain legalism and minimalism crept into moral theology, it should not be attributed to this model of moderation and gentleness. At the University of Naples, Alphonsus received a doctorate in both canon and civil law by acclamation, at the age of 16, but he soon gave up the practice of law for apostolic activity. He was ordained a priest, and concentrated his pastoral efforts on popular parish missions, hearing confessions, and forming Christian groups. Alphonsus Liguori founded the Redemptorist congregation in 1732. It was an association of priests and brothers living a common life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, and working mainly in popular missions for peasants in rural areas. Almost as an omen of what was to come later, he found himself deserted after a while by all his original companions except one lay brother. But the congregation managed to survive and was formally approved 17 years later, though its troubles were not over. Alphonsus' great pastoral reforms were in the pulpit and confessional—replacing the pompous oratory of the time with simplicity, and the rigorism of Jansenism with kindness. His great fame as a writer has somewhat eclipsed the fact that for 26 years he traveled up and down the Kingdom of Naples preaching popular missions. Alphonsus Liguori was made bishop at age 66 after trying to reject the honor, and at once instituted a thorough reform of his diocese. His greatest sorrow came toward the end of his life. The Redemptorists, precariously continuing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, had difficulty in getting their Rule approved by the Kingdom of Naples. Alphonsus acceded to the condition that they possess no property in common, but with the connivance of a high Redemptorist official, a royal official changed the Rule substantially. Alphonsus, old, crippled and with very bad sight, signed the document, unaware that he had been betrayed. The Redemptorists in the Papal States then put themselves under the pope, who withdrew those in Naples from the jurisdiction of Alphonsus Liguori. It was only after his death that the branches were united. At 71, Alphonsus was afflicted with rheumatic pains which left incurable bending of his neck. Until it was straightened a little, the pressure of his chin caused a raw wound on his chest. He suffered a final 18 months of “dark night” scruples, fears, temptations against every article of faith and every virtue, interspersed with intervals of light and relief, when ecstasies were frequent. Alphonsus Liguori is best known for his moral theology, but he also wrote well in the field of spiritual and dogmatic theology. His Glories of Mary is one of the great works on that subject, and his book Visits to the Blessed Sacrament went through 40 editions in his lifetime, greatly influencing the practice of this devotion in the Church. Reflection Saint Alphonsus Liguori was known above all as a practical man who dealt in the concrete rather than the abstract. His life is indeed a practical model for the everyday Christian who has difficulty recognizing the dignity of Christian life amid the swirl of problems, pain, misunderstanding and failure. Alphonsus suffered all these things.
