They explore a groundbreaking theory suggesting vast amounts of liquid water may exist beneath the Martian surface and discuss a revolutionary new cooling method for spacecraft during atmospheric re-entry.Episode Highlights:- The Water Beneath Mars: Andrew and Fred Watson discuss the findings from NASA's InSight mission, revealing that Mars may harbour significant amounts of liquid water trapped in porous rock beneath its surface. They explore the implications of this discovery for future Martian exploration and the potential for microbial life.- Innovative Cooling Solutions: The duo examines a new approach to spacecraft re-entry that involves a 3D printed material capable of 'sweating' to cool down, potentially revolutionising how we protect spacecraft from the intense heat of re-entry.- The Universe's Expiration Date: They also discuss a startling new theory from Dutch scientists that suggests the universe may end much sooner than previously thought, with calculations indicating it could be just 10 to the power of 78 years away, significantly shorter than earlier estimates. For more Space Nuts, including our continually updating newsfeed and to listen to all our episodes, visit our website. The school-to-prison pipeline is a complex and damaging system that disproportionately affects marginalized communities, particularly people of color. This pipeline refers to the policies and practices that push students out of school and into the criminal justice system, creating long-term impacts on individuals and communities. Quan Huynh, Executive Director of Southern California at Defy Ventures, exemplifies the power of second chances. While in prison, he discovered his entrepreneurial spirit and started Jade Janitors after his release from a 22-year prison sentence in 2015. Formerly incarcerated individuals face overwhelming challenges in education, employment, and housing, making fair chance hiring practices essential for their reintegration into society. By giving second chances, companies can help break the cycle of recidivism and create paths to stability and success. In a July 2024 CNBC report, Ohio ranked 7th in business opportunities but received an "F" grade when it comes to workforce. Employers are looking for workers to advance their businesses and constantly talk about the need for workforce development. Meanwhile, there are thousands of justice-impacted individuals who would welcome the opportunity to work in these jobs. Connecting these two groups would help create a massive increase in the workforce pool and lift the entire economy.rnrnResearch suggests that Ohio's expansive collateral sanctions limit access to more than one in four jobs statewide, costing individuals an estimated $3.4 billion in foregone wages and artificially constraining access to talent for businesses.rnrnHow can public policy play a role in helping bridge the gap between these two groups, reduce employment barriers, and assist in providing more individuals with second chances in employment...and in life?rnrnIn partnership with Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry (LMM), join the City Club as we present the 2025 Charles R. See Forum on Reentry. We will welcome a panel of experts who can share their perspectives on what community leaders can do to answer this question, and what we as a community can do to help.

You know that feeling when you come back from vacation or just a time away and everything feels a little bit weirdly off when you get back? Our host, Diane Rolston, just came back from four weeks in New Zealand to jet lag, laundry, inbox mayhem, and emotional whiplash. In this episode, she talks about how re-entry is real and it deserves a little bit more compassion than hustle. Here are some of the key takeaways:Why "re-entry" after vacation can feel disorienting and how to approach it with compassion rather than hustleWhy returning to normal life after time away causes emotional whiplash and post-travel blues that deserve acknowledgmentPractical strategies for grounding yourself The importance of reflection and how to do itHow time away provides valuable perspective on your regular life (similar to "scent blindness") that can reveal insights for positive changesWhy reconnecting with your mission and purpose is essential but often forgotten How to create your own re-entry plan for future tripsWhy re-entry isn't about going backwards but becoming wiser about how life was before, how it is now, and what elements from your time away you want to incorporateWant Diane to create a re-entry mini reset guided meditation or audio reflection? Pastor Jason challenges us to be INTENTIONAL instead of INSTINCTUAL when it comes to how we use our phones. This isn't just about screen time. It's a matter of discipleship and forming habits that lead us toward greater awareness of Jesus' presence, deeper rest, and a renewed mind.

A ctivist and author Peter Gelderloos returns to the Porpoise Almanac to discuss his latest book, "They Will Beat the Memory Out of Us." With a lifetime of activism under his belt, Peter shares his heartfelt reflections on the enduring struggles of social movements, the critical role of collective memory, and the widening gap between generations in the digital age. Our conversation takes a deep dive into the complexities of maintaining intergenerational connections amidst capitalism's isolating forces, highlighting how social media often exacerbates these divides rather than bridging them. Together, we navigate the labyrinth of political ideologies, examining the fluid nature of anarchism and the need for adaptability in today's rapidly changing world. Peter sheds light on the pitfalls of rigid frameworks and the resilience of grassroots mutual aid, contrasting these with the inefficiencies of traditional governmental responses. We explore the fascinating potential for engaging with right-wing narratives, probing the surprising openness some individuals have toward systemic issues and the necessity of preserving past activism's memory to inform contemporary efforts. Our discussion further extends to supporting incarcerated individuals, underscoring the importance of memory and community in aiding their re-entry into society. Peter's insights on navigating imperfections within activism offer a candid look at the challenges of fostering collective accountability and healing. His work resonates profoundly with anyone feeling adrift in modern movements, and we encourage our listeners to explore his writings for a deeper understanding of building resilient, generational communities.
