Send us a textEarth's days had been getting longer since observations began. Every century, the length of the day would increase by about two milliseconds. Like… clockwork. In recent years, something strange has been happening, the days have started getting shorter as the rotation of the Earth has been speeding up. Even more strangely, we don't really understand why.Follow Cosmic Coffee Time on X for some special contentX.com/CosmicCoffTimeEmail us! cosmiccoffeetime@gmail.comYou can request a topic for the show! Michael Bates' journey from correctional officer to Deputy Director of Rehabilitation and Reentry at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice reveals what true transformation looks like, both personally and systemically. When Bates began his career in 2008, he saw TDCJ primarily through the lens of security and public safety. Today, he champions a more holistic vision: one where rehabilitation, dignity, and second chances stand alongside those crucial safety measures. His rapid rise through the ranks—becoming assistant warden at just 30 years old—taught him valuable lessons about leadership, humility, and the importance of experience. What makes this conversation particularly powerful is Bates' candor about his own shortcomings. He shares how his younger self lacked empathy for staff with family responsibilities, and how becoming a parent himself transformed his understanding of work-life balance. This personal growth mirrors the evolution he's helping lead throughout TDCJ, where innovative programs are changing lives daily. The Bartlett Innovation Unit stands as perhaps the most visible example of this new approach. Here, incarcerated individuals care for animals, receive vocational training, and participate in moving "bell ceremonies" when someone completes their sentence. Dressed in donated suits with jobs often already secured, these individuals ring a bell symbolizing their transition to freedom while the entire facility cheers them on.Bates also speaks truthfully about the mental and physical toll correctional work takes. His personal health journey—giving up Dr Pepper, meal prepping, and exercising despite grueling schedules—offers practical wisdom for anyone in demanding professions. His definition of "the good life" as achieving meaningful work-life balance resonates far beyond prison walls.Whether you work in corrections, public service, or simply care about how our justice system might better serve both public safety and human dignity, this conversation offers hope that through dedicated leadership and innovative approaches, transformation is possible—one person, one program, one bell ceremony at a time.If you are interested in donating a suit to the Bartlett Innovation Unit, please send to: 1018 Arnold Drive, Bartlett, Texas 76511. Vanessa Bright had an idea. What if formerly incarcerated individuals would not have such a tough time when they were released? And with that, the Maryland Re-Entry Resource Center (MDRRC) was born. There are so many barriers for formerly incarcerated people that often they end up committing more crime to figure a way to survive. MDRRC offers the resources and referrals needed to thrive post-release. From job coaching and resume writing, to helping find housing, to obtaining insurance or a drivers license, the MDRRC can help. The organization works very tightly with the Annapolis Police Department who has their own re-entry program; and they are even starting their own social enterprise to offer solid jobs for former inmates. In a world where. many are forgotten, MDRRC is making a difference for those who are just looking for a second chance. Have a listen! What is a memory garden?!Qwiffin explains: "Well, it's a garden, but instead of being made out of dirt and seeds and the power of photosynthesis, it grows in a different way: It grows from our memories of being outdoors in nature." The kids and Todd help Qwiffin brainstorm amazing memories of nature in all four seasons: ❄️,

The rover's findings include unique boxwork patterns formed by groundwater, suggesting that even as Mars dried up, water was still present below the surface. As Curiosity ascends Mount Sharp, scientists are eager to understand the implications of these patterns and the mineral cements involved, which may hold clues to Mars' climatic history and the potential for ancient microbial life.Solar Flares and Weather PatternsA groundbreaking study published in the Astronomical Journal has uncovered a connection between solar flares and short-term changes in weather patterns on exoplanets. Researchers found that flares from a planet's host star can cause measurable climate shifts within days, highlighting the importance of solar activity in modulating atmospheric behavior. This research not only enhances our understanding of exoplanet habitability but also suggests that solar variability may influence weather systems on Earth, particularly in volatile regions.Nasa's In-Flight Imagery ProjectNASA's Scientifically Calibrated in Flight Imagery (SCIFLI) team is set to gather vital data during the reentry of a European aerospace company's demonstration capsule. Utilizing advanced instruments, including a spectrometer and high-definition telescope, SCIFLI aims to capture real-time performance data that will refine computational models for future space missions. This mission highlights the importance of empirical data in enhancing safety and performance for crewed and robotic space exploration.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstronomical Journalhttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/1538-3881NASA Curiosity Roverhttps://mars.nasa.gov/msl/NASA SCIFLI Teamhttps://www.nasa.gov/langley/scifliBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

This episode is an interview with Matt Butler, a singer-songwriter who has performed in jails and prisons across America for a decade. He shares how music creates transformative spaces for healing in correctional environments.• Matt's musical journey began after writing songs for a documentary about recovery high schools• Music penetrates emotional defenses faster than conventional approaches, allowing inmates to be vulnerable• Songs like "Good Friday" and "Time to Be a Man" directly speak to experiences of addiction and incarceration• Hypervigilance in prison environments makes trauma processing nearly impossible• Music temporarily changes the atmosphere, allowing emotional expression typically suppressed for survival• Trauma and addiction form a vicious cycle that's particularly difficult to break while incarcerated• Reentry challenges include practical barriers like employment, housing, and basic skills deficits• Many successful recovery stories involve people transforming their past struggles into purpose by helping others• Creating spaces where people feel safe and accepted is essential for healing from addiction and traumaPlease check out Matt's album Reckless Son, the one-man show he performs in correctional facilities across the country. To contact Dr. Grover: ammadeeasy@fastmail.com

They explore a groundbreaking theory suggesting vast amounts of liquid water may exist beneath the Martian surface and discuss a revolutionary new cooling method for spacecraft during atmospheric re-entry.Episode Highlights:- The Water Beneath Mars: Andrew and Fred Watson discuss the findings from NASA's InSight mission, revealing that Mars may harbour significant amounts of liquid water trapped in porous rock beneath its surface. They explore the implications of this discovery for future Martian exploration and the potential for microbial life.- Innovative Cooling Solutions: The duo examines a new approach to spacecraft re-entry that involves a 3D printed material capable of 'sweating' to cool down, potentially revolutionising how we protect spacecraft from the intense heat of re-entry.- The Universe's Expiration Date: They also discuss a startling new theory from Dutch scientists that suggests the universe may end much sooner than previously thought, with calculations indicating it could be just 10 to the power of 78 years away, significantly shorter than earlier estimates. For more Space Nuts, including our continually updating newsfeed and to listen to all our episodes, visit our website. The school-to-prison pipeline is a complex and damaging system that disproportionately affects marginalized communities, particularly people of color. This pipeline refers to the policies and practices that push students out of school and into the criminal justice system, creating long-term impacts on individuals and communities. Quan Huynh, Executive Director of Southern California at Defy Ventures, exemplifies the power of second chances. While in prison, he discovered his entrepreneurial spirit and started Jade Janitors after his release from a 22-year prison sentence in 2015. Formerly incarcerated individuals face overwhelming challenges in education, employment, and housing, making fair chance hiring practices essential for their reintegration into society. By giving second chances, companies can help break the cycle of recidivism and create paths to stability and success.
