What would you do if you suddenly had a new best friends who moved in...on your head!? That is the situation Moose is in when Duck moves in right on top of his head in 'Duck and Moose (Duck moves in)' by Kirk Reedstrom. Kirk comes on the show to share all about how he was able to go from dreaming of having painting hanging in galleries to getting books published by Disney in 2024! ALSO! Huge shout-out to former guest, Scout Underhill, for making this possible! It was their recommendation back when they were on the show which directly lead to Kirk coming on this episode. Enjoy! About Kirk Reedstrom Kirk Reedstrom has spent most of his adult life surrounded by books. He currently works at a public library and used to be a bookseller at Blue Willow Bookshop, an independent bookstore in Houston, TX. He has led children's art workshops at the Kimball Art Museum, the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, and interned with William Joyce at Moonbot Studios. Kirk mixes his past experience with traditional and digital mediums to develop fun-filled characters with a lot of heart and a little bit of mayhem. Kirk enjoys creating books that make people laugh.    About Duck and Moose Moose loves peace and quiet, relaxing, living alone, and spring! He can't wait for the arrival of sun, flowers, and…a new neighbor?! Duck just landed himself a new home. He loves parties, karaoke, and living with—and on—Moose's head. Moose tries everything he can to send Duck away, but he soon finds that this persistent neighbor might just be the best thing spring could bring.   Make sure to check out the Dtalkspodcast.com website! Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse developed a new approach to computer animation so as to translate the comic-book experience for the big screen. Academy voters took notice and awarded the film an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. One of the last things that moviegoers see before leaving the film is the hyperkinetic title sequence animated by visual studio Alma Mater. The sequence was featured at SXSW 2019 in a compilation of compelling title sequences, and it made enough of an impression that it won SXSW's jury-awarded Excellence in Title Design accolade. As part of my festival coverage of SXSW 2019, I sat down with title sequence co-director James Ramirez to learn more about what went into making the sequence. Some of the things we discuss include The different styles of animation that went into the sequence and how they put it together in Cinema 4D How they worked with the filmmakers behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to supplement the ideas and characters of the film The way they implemented the half-tone look What filmmakers should keep in mind when planning for a title sequence # Related Episode To hear more about how vintage animation styles have influenced computer animation, check out this interview with Limbert Fabian and Brandon Oldenburg, Oscar-winning directors from Moonbot Studios, in Shreveport, Louisiana. # Sponsor for this Episode nsavides productions – I make videos and tell stories. James gave a shout out to the Deadpool 2 title sequence. Imaginary Forces, one of the agencies whose work James admires, worked on titles for Stranger Things and Mad Men. Jack Kirby, an early Spider-Man artist, provided design inspiration for both the film and title sequence of Into the Spider-Verse.  While we didn't get to discuss this in the interview, James also did some motion graphics work on Stranger Than Fiction, a film that has been a big inspiration for me. My interview with Stranger Than Fiction's producer Lindsay Doran is over here. Shortcut for the podcast: nicksav.show Additional music for the show provided by Rob Costlow. Concept Art  Ben Apley, producer for Alma Mater's Into the Spider-Verse title sequence, graciously shared some images to illustrate how the concept developed. As an 8-year-old boy, Brandon Oldenburg was a sponge soaking up all kinds of pop culture. Like just about everyone else on the Planet Earth in 1984, he and his brother were particularly fascinated by Michael Jackson - so much so that they produced their own "Beat It" video. Decades later, Oldenburg would cross paths with the King of Pop at a major turning point in both of their lives. Brandon Oldenburg is no stranger to the spotlight. A founding partner at Moonbot Studios in Shreveport, he won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2012 for his work on the film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. In addition to his great story, this podcast also includes an interview with Oldenburg about growing up with a uniquely creative dad.
