When you're living in alignment with your purpose, everything falls into place. That was Alezandra Russell's experience after she visited Thailand and decided to do everything in her power to help restore, rebuild, and empower the lives of boys affected by human trafficking. That turning point led to her non-profit, Urban Light, and resulted in her being awarded the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice. In this episode, we talk about what it means to have an impact—even if you start small.

So far she raised over 20M EUR to end sexual exploitation of children, and initiated multiple campaigns gaining support from human rights activists such as the Iraqi Nobel Prize laureate Nadia Murad. For her work Evelien has received several awards, such as the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice. I'm extremely grateful to share this conversation. A taboo topic, it's extremely important & concerns us all. Many lessons to be learned and if we raise awareness together things can change! Evelien shares with us: - Why she is so passionate about Freedom - Her sudden ‘awakening' & why she resigned that same day from her corporate job - Why if you shut one door another door always opens - Why she turned to social activism to make the world better - How she learned about child exploitation and was deeply touched - Why she decided to be the change herself - Why human sex trafficking & child exploitation is a multi bn industry and highly profitable - Why child exploitation is a taboo although it exists in every country and concerns us all - How the rescued girls find a new chance & purpose - Why only

Human trafficking is a massive, worldwide problem. It's estimated that 20-40 million people are victims of this form for modern slavery, and our communities are not exempt. Today I welcome survivor Rebecca Bender to share her harrowing journey from being human trafficked for nearly six years to now helping other survivors escape + rebuild their lives. In Rebecca's story, you're going to hear what she's been through, what she learned along the way and most importantly that you're not defined by what you've been through.  My friends, today's conversation is incredibly emotional, important and timely. Human trafficking, specifically sex trafficking is a topic we seldom talk or think about, but one that's happening, quietly, all around us. SHOW NOTES: Rebecca grew up in the Pacific Northwest as a typical  "small-town farm kid" until her parents divorced when her father became an alcoholic and her mother became involved in a series of unhealthy relationships. Wanted + engaged: In high school, Rebecca was not considered "at-risk" because she was a varsity athlete and even graduated high school as a junior. Unexpectedly, Rebecca became a teen mom, pivoting from attending Oregon State University to staying in her small town for community college.   "It was all a trick." Rebecca moved to Las Vegas with her boyfriend where immediately their relationship drastically changed.  "You think your situation is different the whole time until you meet other girls just like you." Power + control wheel: Rebecca refers to domestic human trafficking as a mixture of domestic violence, cult-like behavior, and prostitution.  "If you give me the same amount of time you gave the enemy, I will never be outdone." Rebecca's advice for anyone feeling hopeless: There is nothing that you have been through or done that can't be undone and redone. Redemption is available for everyone; start today.  Have grace for yourself and others. "I want people to know they are more than what they've been through." After Rebecca escaped, she created Elevate Academy and has helped hundreds of survivors of the commercial sex trade industry by providing resources to explore new careers and professional development. Learn more about Elevate Academy here. "There are 25 different forms of human trafficking and it's happening in every community in America." Today, Rebecca is married with four daughters and through the Rebecca Bender Initiative, works with law enforcement, FBI, Homeland Security and aftercare programs to provide expert testimony, trainings and consultation across the globe. Get a copy of Rebecca Bender's book In Pursuit of Love here. Get help: Confidentially call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888, text 233733 or chat online on their website. On Live Inspired Podcast ep. 82, I welcomed Christine Caine to share her story. As a global anti-human-trafficking abolitionist, Christine was honored with the 2017 Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice for her work. Listen to Christine Caine on ep. 82. Visit ReadInAwe.com.  REBECCA BENDER'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? God's Leading Lady by T.D. Jakes. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Innocence and trust. I wish I walked into situations almost more expecting the good. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? The Bible from when I got saved 17 years ago. It has every note and every promise God has ever given me, highlighted and dated. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Martin Luther King Jr. and I'd ask how he got through the pressure, how he radically changed a nation, where did he start... I have so many questions! 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? "Run now, you can do it." If I couldn't run, I'd say, "It's going to be okay. You're going to be okay. Your daughter is going to be okay. You're going to get through this." 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Against all odds, I will shine. *** Did you enjoy today’s episode? Subscribe, rate + review on Apple Podcasts! "Be unoffendable. In the words of Taylor Swift, shake it off."    Today's guest is Christine Caine. Christine is someone I admire and respect so much in the arenas of leadership, influence and encouraging women. She is an Australian-born, Greek-blooded lover of Jesus, activist, author and international speaker. Her primary passion is to make Jesus’ last command her first priority by giving her all to see the lost saved and to build the local church – globally. She has a passion for justice, and together with her husband, Nick, founded the anti-human trafficking organization, The A21 Campaign. In 2015, they founded Propel Women, an organization designed to honor the calling of every woman, empower her to lead, equip her for success, and develop a sense of God-given purpose. She’s known around the world as a passionate communicator of God’s word and his love.    Much of the work Christine does through A21 and Propel Women revolves around empowering women. In today's episode, you'll find out why she is so committed to those causes and how much it means to her that A21 just received the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice “for providing the three essentials – food, water and clothing to refugees and for raising awareness against human trafficking.”    Christine and I have thyroid cancer in common. I was diagnosed first in 2007 and I know from experience how shocking, scary, and unexpected that kind of news can be. Christine’s diagnosis came in 2014 and she explains what it was like for her and what God showed her during that season. Her newest book, Unexpected, addresses fear of all kinds and how it can get in the way of us fulfilling our God-given destinies.

Christine Caine's hurdles may seem insurmountable: She is a survivor of both sexual abuse and cancer. At 32, she found out she was adopted.  Yet, she is living a profoundly inspired life. Christine leads a global anti human-trafficking movement and was honored with the 2017 Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice. Have you ever felt like your story was derailed by unexpected or unwanted news? Christine's story and tips will show you how to "let go of your history so you can step into your destiny." SHOW NOTES:  John was determined to have Christine on the show after being shocked when a man recently shared that he'd been taken from his home in Africa to be a slave in the US. Christine's organization A21 is currently helping 28 adult victims + 14 children in the US alone. Learn more about A21 Campaign and 21 steps you can take to abolish slavery here.  Christine’s passion to help victims stems from being sexually abused for more than a decade during her youth. You can rise above the adversity of your past and fulfill a life of purpose. That has been my story; hopefully my past can give others a future. The advent of the #MeToo movement: There is a wakening that this is not okay and realization that it is far wider spread than anyone thought. It's important that we bring justice into the light so that justice can be brought into the circumstance. I would have been very angry; my faith gave me a path forward. It's important to find healing. Anger, bitterness and un-forgiveness do not need to be the end of your story. How do you encourage abuse victims? It's not your fault. Don't internalize what happened or identify yourself by it. You're not what happened to you. Denial doesn't help. It just pushes down anger, resentment + bitterness, all of which must come out. Good counseling. Venting does not equate to healing and wholeness. Process the pain in a safe place with a counselor. When you do, you will come out the other side.  Christine's new book Unexpected: "Just because everything around you is crazy, doesn't mean you have to be! Be rooted." Unexpected things do not have to take you out; you can navigate that. My life is a testament to this truth. What happens to you does not need to define who you are. Your greatest challenge or unexpected news is not where the story ends. Secrets manifest. Learn how to disclose things in a safe place.  Rise above your circumstances. There's a place for lament + grief, but you have to use tools to overcome your adversity. Have faith in this climate of anxiety and fear. Start doing it afraid, until you are no longer afraid. What if we don't have faith? Take the next step toward your future and trust that there is something more than you. Decide what is the next best thing you can do. You'll step into new relationships, opportunities, one door leads to another. How do you do it all? I work a perfectly imbalanced life: There are seasons of high focus in different aspects of life. I center myself in faith. I'm drawn by what is important, not the tyranny of the urgent. I live disciplined, organized and enjoy the journey. I know that I can't do everything. I don't bear the burden or responsibility for everything I can't change. I lead through people, empower them and know we are better together. I do the best I can. At the end of the day, it's enough. How do you let go of the urgent + focus on important?  Be intentional. Keep adjusting your compass to go in the direction you're going. Don't be dragged by the current of the latest craze. Don't let others' agenda become yours. Don't be driven by ego, this puts everything out of order. Keep your soul healthy. We live in an outrage society. Don't react. Respond from a place of wisdom where you feel called to lead.  CHRISTINE CAINE'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Bible and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I read it decades ago and keep coming back to it.  2. What is characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Lack of cynicism. I loved when I was not jaded. I have to proactively fight to be unjaded. I wish I didn't have to fight so hard. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Passport! 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Billy Graham. I'd ask, "How did you keep your passion alive?" 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Remain a life-long student. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Chill out. Don't be so uptight about everything. It will happen. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? She stayed the course. ***  If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast wherever you get your podcasts.
