A winner of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has spoken to FRANCE 24 about how she wanted to be a makeup artist in her small village in northern Iraq before her life was nearly destroyed by the Islamic State group. In 2014, when Nadia Murad was just 21 years old, IS group terrorists attacked her community, killing hundreds of people, including her mother and six of her nine brothers. Along with nearly 7,000 other Yazidi women and children, she was abducted and like many of them was raped, beaten and tortured for several months. Now, though, she is a powerful voice for all survivors of genocide and sexual violence. Her story is documented in her book "The Last Girl: My Story of Captivity and My Fight Against the Islamic State". She spoke to us in Perspective.

Ten years ago, in 2014, militants belonging to the Islamic State group in Iraq killed and captured thousands of Yazidi people in what would later be called a genocide. It's understood that hundreds of women are still missing, and are being held as sex and domestic slaves across the Middle East. One was recently found in Gaza. Since then there have only been a handful of court cases - mostly in European courts - but survivors are still fighting for justice. Caroline Hawley, a BBC diplomatic correspondent, talks us through the detail. We also hear from Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad who, at 21, was abducted into sexual slavery when IS militants surrounded her Yazidi community in the Sinjar region. Since her miraculous escape she has been advocating for survivors of genocide and sexual violence through her organisation Nadia's Initiative. Trigger warning: the material in this episode can be disturbing and quite hard to hear. If you are sensitive to content about physical and sexual violence, or if you believe that you might find the discussion to be triggering, this episode may not be right for you.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk Presenter: Hannah Gelbart Producers: Mora Morrison and Hayley Clarke Editor: Verity Wilde

Paul is joined by returning guest, Arif Gilany, to talk about soulful leaders and what these two all-powerful words mean to them. KEY TAKEAWAYS We're just here to bring awareness and set an example. If your actions inspire others to dream more, to do more, and to be more you are a soulful leader. I've studied a lot of successful people, and there are examples of great feminist soulful leaders: a young black girl who grew up in poverty to becoming the world's first black billionaire – Oprah Winfrey, A young sex slave from a Yazidi/Kurdish background, called Nadia Murad, who was stolen by ISIS who went on in 2018 to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Under pressure most people would buckle and lose control, but all we can do is stay calm, and loving, and caring throughout all the trials and tribulations of life and know that everything is possible through love and care. My whole life is about making a positive impact in the lives of as many people around the world as possible. I went through so many challenges, starting with war and injuries that threatened my life. I've had the chance to take care of my father who passed away at 85, that was a very humbling experience, to have someone you love so much pass away in your arms. It gave me a perspective of putting myself in his shoes. If it was me, what would I have done and accomplished? This kind of perspective – looking at your life from the end – should be focussed on more than the hustle of today. Reverse engineer your thinking to think “what impact will I have made when I take my last breath?” BEST MOMENTS ‘When I think about the words “soulful leaders” what comes to my mind is leaders who raise the consciousness of others.' ‘By not accepting residency in the US while there's war going on in Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky has set a clear example of what a soulful leader is and what that means to his people.' ‘Soulful leaders break the mould, they are visionaries.'  ‘When there's hope in the future, there's power in the now.' After she managed a remarkable and daring escape, she channeled her trauma to incredible effect, today advocating for survivors of genocide and sexual violence. She tells her story on this week's episode, joined by her legal counsel, barrister Amal Clooney. Trigger warning: the material in this episode is powerful and inspiring, but it can also be disturbing and quite hard to hear. Suoi disegni sono apparsi su The New York Times, The Observer e The Paris Review; la sua opera muraria Skyline of the World è stata installata nel nuovo terminal del Jfk International Airport. The order restricted transportation of migrants in the state to law enforcement, due to the pandemic. The order directed law enforcement to stop any vehicle upon reasonable suspicion it was carrying migrants. The pope met Thursday with Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad. The Supreme Court of Colombia has ruled that minors as young as 14 can legally marry or cohabit with an adult, without parental consent. The court said minors must have a responsible intention to form a family. The ruling is in response to an inheritance lawsuit involving a 14-year-old boy and an adult woman, who later died.

Focusing on the 'male perpetrator,' this paper first examines how, why, and with what effect gendered and raced imaginaries became encoded in international peace and security policy. Sexual violence in conflict once again captured the international spotlight earlier this month when gynaecologist, Dr Denis Mukwege, and human rights activist, Nadia Murad, were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Responding to sexual violence grew exponentially in importance on international policy agendas over the past decade, with clear implications for operational and programmatic practice across conflict-affected contexts. The adoption of UN Security Council resolution 1820 (2008) – establishing sexual violence as a threat to international peace and security – marked a clear turning point in this regard. While pervasive across many armed conflicts, testimonies of sexual violence documented in eastern DRC were an important focus of such institutional developments. In effect, these experiences became somewhat defining of the nature of the harm, its victims and its perpetrators. Focusing on the ‘male perpetrator,' this paper first examines how, why, and with what effect gendered and raced imaginaries became encoded in international peace and security policy. Doing so, it emphasises the role of institutional imperatives and political dynamics in shaping international policy definitions of sexual violence in the Council. Subsequently, exploring efforts to fight impunity for sexual violence in DRC, presentation foregrounds how, and with what effect, this clearly delineated policy definition obscures more complex realities in DRC. Chloé is completing her PhD in International Development at the University of Oxford where she is researching responses to sexual and gender-based violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Drawing on extensive research conducted at the United Headquarters in New York and in DRC between 2013-2017, her dissertation examines the development of internationally-driven responses to sexual violence, including at the level of the UN Security Council, and their operationalisation in DRC. In particular, Chloé critically explores how different facets of the response architecture 'see' and 'engage' with conflict-affected women and men, why, and to what effect. Committed to working across scholarship, policy, and practice, she particularly enjoys collaborating with policy- and operationally-orientated entities, including the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security, the World Bank Gender Innovation Lab, Search for Common Ground, and the UN Peacekeeping and Stabilization Mission in DRC (MONUSCO). Most of all, Chloé is looking forward to life after the PhD.
