Here's some information about Nicole, in case some of you are new to Sexual Assault Survivor Stories. Nicole is a frequent guest on this show, and I want you to know some information about her. This information is published by Force Science, Nicole's employer, on their website: “Nicole Florisi, PsyD Candidate, LEO Director of Curriculum & Content Development, Staff Instructor Force Science Biography Nicole has extensive experience as an educator, police officer, and therapist. She provides front-line instruction in de-escalation, crisis communications, and force encounters investigations. With over 25 years of experience, she has held positions including communications specialist, patrol officer, patrol sergeant, investigator, and acting chief. She has held previous roles as a Law Enforcement Subject Matter Expert at and as the Executive Director for the Verde Valley Sanctuary; a shelter dedicated to providing services for victims of sex trafficking, sexual violence, and domestic violence. Nicole is currently working on her doctorate in clinical psychology. She holds two post-master's degrees; one in Human Factors Psychology and one in Trauma Counseling; an M.S. in Professional Counseling; and a B.S. in Public Safety Administration and Emergency Management.” Just over a month ago, Nicole Florisi reached out to me to let me know that there was a not-so-great situation that had recently come to her attention regarding a domestic violence/sex assault shelter. She told me that several residents of this particular shelter had reached out to inform her that there were some pretty extreme reports of inappropriate behavior and abuses perpetrated on shelter clientele at the hands of some of the shelter staff. Before I go any further, I want to emphasize that these reports were not initiated by Nicole, but rather by clientele residents of the shelter referenced in the reports. At the time Nicole reached out to me in July, we were not releasing the name of the shelter. But since the time of that recording, reports of the abuses and poor living conditions at the shelter were made public through an article published by the local newspaper, the . The shelter at the center of the reports is Verde Valley Sanctuary (VVS), which is the shelter at which Nicole had been the Executive Director. And the reason clientele of the shelter were reaching out to Nicole is because they know her, trust her, and thought that Nicole may be able to help. These reports had started coming to Nicole in the fall of 2023, and Nicole forwarded those reports, via email,  to the shelter administration and board of directors in October, 2023. Because Nicole did not receive any type of acknowledgement of her report from either the shelter or administration, she forwarded a second report to the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence (ACESDV). The response that Nicole received from ACESDV, was that “ACESDV has visited the program and has not seen anything of concern.” But the reports of abuses and lack of services continued to come in from shelter clientele, and now were also being received by staff employees that had been terminated by the new Executive Director. Those same previous VVS personnel were forwarding some of the resident complaints to the newspaper, which in July 2024 published a story, “”. When Nicole reached out to me last month and told me about this entire situation, I was resolved to get her on SASS and discuss this situation; not to disparage Verde Valley Sanctuary, but to give an additional voice to the affected clientele residents, and to educate, discuss solutions, and talk about reporting options to my audience in case they are currently in a similar situation or find themselves in a shelter of any kind, anytime in the future. CURRENT SITUATION: Since it has been over a month since Nicole and I recorded this episode, I recently reached out to Nicole to let her know the episode was going to be published today (20 August 2024), and to ask her to provide me with any updates that may be available to keep you, my audience, appraised of the situation. Here is the update that Nicole sent to me: Hi Dave!  Here is an update so far: After the newspaper article came out, VVS responded to the claims with many false and misleading statements.  We are in the process of responding to this at this time.  The VVS Board President has been making untrue and disparaging remarks about me (and others who brought this to light) in emails to donors.  I do not know the status of my complaints to the state funders, as they are not required to report them to me.  Personnel from sister agencies have come forward to me after hearing about these claims, stating their clients have been telling me about how fearful they were of staff and of their mistreatment, and they have a lot of concerns about working with VVS at this time.  I had hoped we would have something more positive for you by the time this show aired, but we are still fighting the lies, manipulation, and corruption on behalf of the clients. No one should ever be victimized or re-victimized by those who are supposed to help.  Talk to you again soon, hopefully with better news. -Nicole  I hope that this episode provides some enlightenment and valuable educational information to all of my listeners, whatever situation you find yourself in. If you're a victim or survivor of rape, sexual assault, or any form of interpersonal violence and find yourself in circumstances that necessitate your need to utilize a shelter, of any kind, I hope this information is helpful. If you never need the services of a shelter but know someone who currently is in a shelter or may need a shelter in the future, please pass this episode on to them. Please hit the subscribe button on whatever podcast platform you found this show, and leave a review, if you would…it helps more than you know! At the core of it all, under all of our evidence, terminology and funding structures: love is the key to ending sexual and intimate partner violence.  In a movement made almost entirely of survivors, we know healthy love will heal our communities and create a world free of violence. The question that remains is "How do we bring love into our-day-to-day, when so much about how our culture and work structures operate challenge the idea of radical love in and of itself?"Audrey Jordan and Shiree Teng recently came together to speak to our movement about radical love, love of self, of others and of community in a recent PreventConnect Web Conference: Measuring Love. The conversation revealed just how challenging it can be for preventionists to see love in their program structures and outcomes. For this episode of PreventConnect, I got to chat with two people I really admire in this field: Rosá Beltre, who leads the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence and Ashleigh-Klein-Jimenez, Director of Prevention at VALOR in California.  Rosá and Ashleigh are both women who cultivate love, while remaining fierce leaders in their work to end violence.  We're talking about where love comes into our work, why it's challenging for us to talk about, and what it looks like in prevention work.Resources mentioned in this Podcast:Measuring Love in the Journey to End Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Part 1Measuring Love in the Journey to End Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Part 2Measuring Love in the Journey to End Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Part 3 (Publishes Thursday, May 30.) Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence Valor.Us Homeboy IndustriesHealth Equity in Practice Part 2: Why anti-racism is an integral part of sexual violence prevention

They discuss “vicarious trauma”, the reality of how it can affect Alan and his coworkers, and what is done to address it. Alan shares vital information with Laura and all listeners on tending to one's own self care while still responding to his call to action to learn more about human trafficking and taking whatever action is available to work against it. “I want to challenge everybody to take another step forward in understanding and learning and getting involved in anti-human trafficking efforts. Content Warning: discussion of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, abuse and child abuseIn this episode, Laura speaks with Alan Smyth, Executive Director for Saving Innocence and co-author of the book ‘Men! Fight for Me: The Role of Authentic Masculinity in Ending Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking'. Alan has been on the front lines of caring for child victims of trafficking for six years through his role with Saving Innocence in LA. He calls his perspective a “backstage pass” to the horrors of trafficking and from that position realized that men need a specific call to action for their part in fighting trafficking. That realization led to his book, co-authored with Jessica Midkiff, herself a trafficking survivor.Laura and Alan explore the hard realities of how trafficking happens and how it happens right here in our own neighborhoods. They discuss necessary steps to take in addressing the issue and Alan shares how his book seeks specifically to move men to action. The term ‘authentic masculinity' defines a more positive and less toxic version of masculinity than one popularly upheld and how reaching men on that level is part of the work he is called to. “If we're not willing to step into it, and we're not willing to look at it closely and deal with it, it's going to continue to be the fastest growing crime in the world… and that's just unacceptable.” Alan SmythAbout Alan Smyth:Currently Alan serves as the Executive Director for Saving Innocence, an anti-human trafficking, community-based organization focused on child victims of sex trafficking.  Based in Los Angeles, Alan has responsibility over Direct Services and Business Operations. It's a sad reality that no matter which industry you're in, if you are a woman who has ever had a job in Australia you've probably witnessed or experienced sexual harassment or assault in the workplace. Last week, hundreds of experts and survivors came together to discuss how we can better protect all women at the National Summit on Women's Safety, but with the Government refusing to implement key reforms, will it really make a difference? The Quicky hears several women's stories, and speaks to a workplace investigator and trainer who uses his experience as a lawyer and former member of the Police to change workplace culture and prevent inappropriate behaviour before it happens. The episode takes you behind the scenes into a state task force meeting to hear heartbreaking testimony from victims and their families, and how local leaders are hoping to improve conditions. The state task force convened after a woman with severe disabilities was raped and gave birth at Hacienda HealthCare in December 2018.  Staff at the facility was unaware the woman was pregnant until she went into labor, according to 911 calls. -- For suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of a vulnerable adult, Adult Protective Services operates a hotline: (877) SOS-ADULT or (877) 767-2385 or TDD: (877) 815-8390. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women/girls and 1 in 6 men/boys in their lifetime will experience some form of sexual violence either in childhood or in their adult life. Young adults are generally most at risk, but it can happen at any age, and it's been going on for many, many years. A new facility, the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre (CSAC) in Lethbridge at 740-4 Avenue South is now open. It offers services to all people of all ages, no matter how they identify sexually. Some of those services include crisis support, victim advocacy, and counselling. Some forerunners, such as Lethbridge Family Services and the YWCA with its Amethyst Program, has dealt with sexual violence for many years, but CSAC is about having people be able to identify with one source, so they know where to go. The speaker will focus on the current state of sexual violence in our world with particular focus on Canada, the economic impact of the crime and contributing factors that support its existence. We will continue to explore the ways in which each of us, as individuals, communities and as a country, can end sexual violence by reshaping our beliefs/values and by taking action. Speaker: Kristine Cassie, MSc, RSW Kristine has worked in the human services sector for over 35 years with substantial experience and advocacy efforts in the areas of youth empowerment, domestic and sexual violence and housing. A graduate of Mount Royal from the Youth Development Program, Kristine started her career working with youth in care. It was while working at the YWCA Lethbridge and District that she reinvested in her education and completed an Applied BA in Human Service Administration (Grant McEwan) and a Master's of Science in Leadership and Management from Walden University. Kristine worked at the YWCA for nearly 25 years, serving as its CEO for the last 11 years. Leaving the YWCA in January 2016, she worked as the Director of Operations at Southern Alberta Community Living Association, an agency serving people with developmental disabilities. The Me Too movement has brought much needed attention to sexual violence and harassment both in and outside the workplace. It has challenged patriarchal norms and practices and illuminated entrenched power hierarchies. It also drew strength from longer struggles against the many manifestations of patriarchal power.   On this month’s show, we speak to Bernice Yeung about how some of the U.S.’s most precarious workers experienced and have fought back against workplace sexual violence. She takes us into office buildings and farm fields. And she shares lessons about what can be done to overcome the epidemic of sexual violence across our society.   Bernice Yeung is an award-winning journalist for Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting. She was a 2015–2016 Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Mother Jones, and The Guardian, as well as on KQED Public Radio and PBS Frontline, and she is the author of In a Day’s Work: The Fight to End Sexual Violence Against America’s Most Vulnerable Workers. Leaders of the We Said Enough Campaign Reflect on the Effort to End Sexual Harassment in State Politics

It was an historic night for female candidates in this past week's midterm elections, taking a record number of seats in the House of Representatives and also gaining important offices on the state level in California. These gains come after a year of energetic campaigning and organizing among women candidates, arguably encouraged to a large extent by the #MeToo movement--taking on sexual harassment and abuse. It was just over a year ago that an open letter, signed by many women in politics, uncovered a culture of rampant abuse in California's capitol. It launched a movement that came to be the We Said Enough campaign, and over the last year we've seen not only a handful of high profile resignations by lawmakers accused of sexual misconduct but also some serious reform efforts aimed at beefing up investigations into abuse allegations. On this edition of In Depth, guest host Keith Menconi speaks to some of the key leaders of We Said Enough, Adama Iwu and Christine Pelosi, to hear from them what they believe the movement has achieved so far and also now that the midterms have come and gone, what sorts of changes we should expect to see in politics with more women in power. Ms. Iwu is co-founder and president of We Said Enough, and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine after the letter was published. "As soon as the letter came out, Iwu said, "I think those of who had signed it realized immediately what this was and mostly because reporters from all over the world started reaching out to those of us in the core group but also every single woman who signed that letter was getting multiple calls from reporters asking you know, who, what, where, when and why and what did they know and when did they know it and that type of thing. And that was a lot to deal with. And we were clear that we didn't want to name names, that wasn't what we wanted. We weren't after one or two people you know just kind of going away. We really wanted wholesale culture change and when legislators began resigning I think that was when we really realized that this was real. And we also realized that it was real because we were seeing this happening in other places around the country as well." "It was a tremendous victory for women activists all over the country who for two years have been building a message around protecting healthcare, about defending women's rights and about advancing our values," said Pelosi of Tuesday's election results. She is legal counsel for We Said Enough and Democratic Women's Caucus Chair. "Some of those women went on to become candidates, first time candidates, which was very exciting to see."
