She spent nearly a decade in frontline anti-trafficking work in Louisiana, coordinating the Greater New Orleans Human Trafficking Task Force for more than three years and later managing a statewide child and youth trafficking initiative for the Louisiana Alliance of Children's Advocacy Centers. In 2018 she was appointed Chair of the Labor Trafficking Committee for the Louisiana Governor's Human Trafficking Prevention Commission and Advisory Board. At RTI, she leads technical assistance for a U.S. Office for Victims of Crime initiative on child and youth trafficking outcomes and contributes to research on labor trafficking prosecutions and the effects of disasters on trafficking vulnerability. She holds a Master of Arts in International Studies, concentrating in Human Rights and Human Trafficking, from the University of Denver's Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs, and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Linfield University.Key Points• Hurricane Katrina's Signal International case, in which hundreds of Indian guest workers were defrauded and trafficked into labor repairing Gulf oil rigs, became one of the largest labor trafficking settlements at the time and helped drive Louisiana's first designated federal anti-trafficking funding in 2007-2008.• Housing instability is one of the biggest drivers of post-disaster trafficking risk — when people lose their community, school, and church, they become far more vulnerable to someone who says, "Don't worry, I'll take care of everything. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls have been a problem in Canada for decades, and one that went ignored for far too long. Going back to the late 60s, women and girls were taken especially along a stretch of road in British Columbia known as The Highway of Tears. But now, there is a new highway of tears. By tracking sex ads posted online, a team from Thompson Reuters was able to follow the routes traffickers used to move their victims from one end of the country to the next, following along some of Canada's busiest highways and airports. Human trafficking often thrives in the shadows, hidden within complex supply chains and ordinary commercial activity. But Christian investors are discovering that their influence can help bring exploitation into the light. Will Lofland, Managing Director of Faith-Based Investing at GuideStone Funds, joined the show today to explain how investors can encourage companies to identify forced labor, protect vulnerable people, and pursue meaningful change. A Tragedy Hidden in Plain Sight According to estimates from Walk Free, nearly 50 million people worldwide are living in modern slavery. More than 27 million are trapped in forced labor, including approximately 3.3 million children. Those numbers can feel distant, but exploitation may be connected to products people use every day. Forced labor can appear deep within the supply chains that produce clothing, food, electronics, and other consumer goods. Because these networks are complex, companies may not always recognize where exploitation is occurring. But that does not make the problem any less urgent—or remove the responsibility to address it. For Christian investors, this concern is rooted in more than economics or risk management. It reflects the biblical command to defend those who are vulnerable: “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.” - Proverbs 31:8–9 Biblical stewardship is not passive. God entrusts His people with resources, relationships, and influence that can be used to pursue what is good and protect those at risk. Moving Beyond Investment Screening Faith-based investing has often focused on screening—seeking to avoid companies whose primary business activities conflict with Christian values. That can remain an important part of a values-aligned investment strategy, but it is not the only approach available. GuideStone has expanded its work to include shareholder advocacy, which allows investors to engage the companies they own rather than simply excluding them. This advocacy generally involves two primary tools: proxy voting and direct corporate engagement. Through proxy voting, shareholders can vote on company leadership, policies, and proposals presented at annual meetings. GuideStone seeks to vote the proxy ballot for every company held within its investment strategies, evaluating each decision through the lens of faithful stewardship and long-term shareholder interests. Direct engagement involves meeting with corporate leaders to discuss concerns such as child labor, forced labor, and online sexual exploitation. These conversations give investors an opportunity to ask difficult questions, encourage greater transparency, and help companies strengthen their policies and practices. The goal is not merely to criticize companies publicly. It is to pursue constructive, solutions-oriented dialogue that protects vulnerable people while supporting responsible corporate leadership. Bringing Experts Into the Boardroom One recent example of this work is GuideStone's involvement as a founding member of the Eagle Freedom Alliance, a collaboration focused on combating human trafficking through corporate engagement. Rather than simply sending letters or publicly condemning businesses, the alliance seeks to bring anti-trafficking experts into conversations with corporate decision-makers. These experts can help companies recognize vulnerabilities within their operations and supply chains, improve oversight, and implement practical solutions. Many companies do not want forced labor or trafficking connected to their business. They may, however, need better information, stronger processes, or outside expertise to identify and eliminate those risks. By approaching these companies as partners in problem-solving, investors may be able to encourage more lasting change than they could through confrontation alone. This kind of engagement can also protect long-term shareholder value. Companies that ignore exploitation may face reputational damage, regulatory consequences, supply disruptions, and a loss of consumer trust. Protecting people and promoting responsible business practices are not opposing goals. The Power of Christian Collaboration Collaboration is especially important when addressing a problem as large and complex as human trafficking. A single investor may have limited influence, but a coalition of faith-based investors can bring a stronger and more unified voice into the boardroom. Working together demonstrates that concern about exploitation is not isolated—it is shared by a broader community of investors seeking meaningful change. This cooperation also reflects the biblical picture of believers working together for a common purpose. By combining their knowledge, relationships, and influence, Christian investors can shine a brighter light on harmful practices and encourage companies to take the issue seriously. Investors may not be able to eliminate human trafficking on their own. But they can refuse to remain indifferent. They can ask better questions, support greater transparency, vote thoughtfully, and encourage companies to protect the dignity of every person touched by their operations. Stewarding More Than Financial Returns Investing will always involve financial considerations, including risk, diversification, and long-term goals. But for followers of Christ, stewardship also invites a broader question: How can the resources God has entrusted to us reflect His heart and purposes? Faith-based investing offers one way to bring those convictions into financial decision-making. Through careful screening, active ownership, and collaboration with other believers, Christian investors can seek both prudent financial outcomes and positive influence in the marketplace. Human trafficking may flourish in darkness, but faithful stewardship can help expose it. By speaking for the vulnerable and encouraging responsible corporate action, investors can use their influence to pursue justice, protect human dignity, and honor God with the resources He has provided. History is littered with examples where citizens were told, 'That would never happen here,' only to discover years later that it had. MKUltra. Tuskegee. COINTELPRO. Secret radiation experiments. Biological testing in American cities. Those episodes don't prove every modern suspicion is correct. But they do establish a simple principle: governments are capable of secrecy, deception, and ethically troubling actions when officials believe the stakes justify them. Just recently, newly declassified testimony from Sidney Gottlieb, the man who ran MKUltra, added even more detail to what really happened. Perhaps the most remarkable admission? After years of experimentation, Gottlieb himself concluded the program was 'probably not a high pay-off program.' In other words, countless lives were disrupted in pursuit of results that often failed to materialize.  Joining us today is Dr. Juliette Engle.  Dr. Juliette Engel tells her own story of her life as a girl-child born into a family of intelligence operatives. In 1955 at the age of six, she was sold by her father into the CIA's secret Monarch MK Ultra program. At age ten, she was selected for Sex Magick because she was tall, smart, and pretty. Throughout childhood, she was subjected to physical and mental torture including sexual abuse in the process of creating multiple identities. As a teenager, she was trained in the art of seduction, physics, ariosophy, cybernetics and genocide at the Stanford Research Institute and Hoover Institution in preparation for life undercover in Russia.  At the age of seventeen, she escaped and lived as a free person through the University of Washington undergrad and medical school becoming a physician, marrying and having a family without any memory of her childhood. In 1990, she sold her medical practice in Bellevue, Washington and moved to Moscow to found the Angel Coalition, an underground railroad that rescued and repatriated thousands of trafficking victims, mostly children. Dr. Engel's story will break your heart, but also shows the incredible resilience of the human spirit, and how personal faith and God's grace can pull us through any test of emotional or physical strength. Human trafficking is a healthcare issue, and many NPs do not feel fully prepared to recognize it in clinical practice. In this episode, I'm joined by NP educator Dr. Lauren Mays to discuss recognizing human trafficking, common misconceptions, and the important role healthcare providers play in supporting vulnerable patients.     We discuss how trafficking signs often show up as more of a vague "something's not quite right here" feeling and what to do when this feeling comes up. The whaling season this year has received a lot of domestic and international attention, not least because anti-whaler Paul Watson has sent his vessel, Bandero, to intercept Hvalur hf.'s whale boats Hvalur 8 and Hvalur 9, so for without luck. Footage of an employee of Hvalur hf. swinging a whale dick while being recorded on video, did neither make pro-, nor anti-whalers happy.Gasoline Prices In IcelandAccording to The Icelandic Competition Authority Icelandic oil companies have raised the prices for diesel oil by 50% since 2022 and 25% since 2022 and gasoline. The oil companies also raised their prices just prior to the so called milage tax in January of this year. The Icelandic Competition Authority also states that the price of fuel in Iceland has consistently been higher in Iceland than in 27 other European countries in the past decade. AmphetamineTwo men are in custody following an attempt of importing 14 liters of amphetamine to Iceland via an Icelandic transport vessel in April. The two men got two crew to help out with the smuggling. CocaineA 106 kilograms of cocaine were apprehended by the Icelandic authorities on a transport vessel named Koznitza, which arrived in Iceland on 22 June. The ship sailed from Brazil til Straumsvík in Hafnarfjörður, and was bringing materials for the Aluminum smelter located in Straumsvík. This is the largest amount of cocaine ever confiscated in Iceland and at least nine people have been arrested in association with the smuggling, of which at least three are Icelandic with a Romanian and Brazilians. One of the Icelanders arrested, Lárus Freyr Einarsson, was convicted of murder in Denmark in 2011, and arrested again in 2020 in relation to the production of amphetamines in a summerhouse in Kjós, near Reykjavík.WeedThe police apprehended just under 800 cannabis plants at three different locations in Iceland recently. 200 plants were confiscated near the small village of Reykholt, and more in a summerhouse in Kjós. Maybe a different summerhouse than the amphetamines mentioned above, but we just don't know.Fisheries Investing In Unrelated Businesses In IcelandAðalsteinn Kjartansson has been writing investigative peaces for Heimildin on the investments of persons and companies who've made billions through the fisheries. The investments of the family of Guðbjörg Matthíasdóttir are extensive, and while holding a large stake in Iceland's only daily newspaper, the family owns parts of import businesses, other media companies, and health industry companies. All of these investments, went underreported in a recent report on the investments of fisheries companies, the report was commissioned by the Icelandic Parliament.Ivanka Trump Visits IcelandYeah. Who gives fuck.Human Trafficking And Prostitution, In IcelandThe Icelandic police participated in a large international police operation in June, coordinated in 59 countries, targeting a Chinese crime syndicate which has been engaged in human trafficking and prostitution.
