In today's episode, we have an inspiring conversation with Guides and Podcasters Jose and Sebastian Camarlinghi. We dive into the world of mountaineering and filmmaking, exploring how their shared passion for the outdoors has shaped their lives and careers. Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com Show Notes What Happens When a Mountain Guide and Filmmaker Team Up? What Happened: Do you know those stories your dad tells—the ones you've heard a million times but somehow still pull you in? That's how Voices de Montaña started. Growing up, I (Sebastian) was surrounded by tales of glaciers, daring rescues, and llamas trekking salt across Bolivia's rugged terrain. My dad, José, a mountain guide with decades of experience, always had a story worth telling. But here's the thing: these incredible moments were fading into the ether, known only to close friends and family. One day, after kicking around ideas for documentaries that felt too logistically impossible, we realized there had to be another way to share these mountain memories. That's when we decided: let's start a podcast. Just two guys, a love for storytelling, and a small but passionate team. And guess what? What started as an experiment to preserve these stories turned into a platform that captured the hearts of listeners across Latin America. From climbers to casual outdoor enthusiasts, people weren't just listening—they were connecting with these tales of adventure, resilience, and passion. Principle: Here's the truth: stories aren't just entertainment—they're bridges. They connect people to places, to history, and to one another. In a world overwhelmed by noise, the power of authentic storytelling cuts through. Whether it's the tale of a Bolivian climber turned hero in Pakistan or the rituals of llama caravans, these stories inspire and remind us why nature is worth exploring and protecting. Transition: But here's the thing: most of these stories might have been lost if we hadn't taken that first step. It's not easy carving out space in a niche that barely exists, but it's even harder to stay silent when you know your story matters. If you've ever felt like you're up against the impossible, whether it's launching a creative project, exploring a new path, or simply trying to make your voice heard, you're not alone. That's Why: That's why we started Voices de Montaña. It's not just about mountains or adventures—it's about keeping stories alive and inspiring a community to dream bigger, climb higher, and value the world around them. And in our latest episode, we share the journey of a Bolivian guide who risked it all to bring a legend home. If you're ready to connect with stories that inspire and remind you what's possible, Voices de Montaña is for you. Don't let your dreams—or someone else's story—fade into the background. Tune in to this episode with Lila Sullivan, president and co-founder of Flourish Plant, for an engaging discussion about entrepreneurship, innovation, and creating a business rooted in sustainability and care. Lila shares her journey from science fairs at Darien High School to building an eco-conscious plant care company with her childhood best friend, Kate Ferguson. Lila and Kate's entrepreneurial roots trace back to their high school years, where they bonded over science research and competitions. Their shared passion for science and nature sowed the seeds for Flourish Plant. Frustration with synthetic fertilizers motivated Kate to envision a sustainable, non-toxic alternative; the beginnings of Flourish Plant. Lila brings her experience as an executive recruiter to the table, calling it her "mini MBA." Her expertise in understanding business growth, combined with Kate's creativity, has been instrumental in building Flourish. The pair moved to Austin, Texas, a hub for innovation, where they launched their first product: Flourish Organic Houseplant Fertilizer. Flourish's flagship product is made from food waste and byproducts, showcasing their commitment to sustainability. Their innovative approach includes a liquid concentrate formula, designed for simplicity and effectiveness. Starting with a direct-to-consumer model, the team quickly pivoted to wholesale, building relationships with over 250 independent plant stores and garden centers. Their hard work culminated in being featured in Whole Foods, now available in 300 stores across multiple states. Lila credits their success to building relationships, networking, and staying true to their vision, emphasizing patience and action: Lila shares invaluable lessons from her journey: Network Relentlessly: Seek advice from those who have succeeded in similar spaces. Stay True to Your Vision: Balance external advice with your internal goals and resources. Active Patience: Understand that growth takes time and requires consistent effort. With new products in the pipeline and plans to expand into grocery and online marketplaces, Flourish Plant is poised for continued growth. Their mission remains clear: to provide sustainable, high-quality plant care products wherever plants are sold. I spent so much time sharing with you my plans for the SealFit journey, and you were so kind to ask questions about it. So I'm going to tell you, I had my butt handed to me, and I've never been more grateful for that. There are so many things I would change if I were to do this again. And I was just saying this morning, I'm leaning very, very hard towards doing this again because my why has changed. It has to do with the men on that team, on my team. So I'll go through the embarrassing moments. I'll go through the inspiring moments, but I'm not going to give away a lot of detail about the workouts or the rules because I feel like that should be the province of people who actually go through what they call the crucible, the 50 hours. I'll tell you about my teammates who secured, meaning they got through, they thrived, they did it. And I can't communicate clearly enough about how blessed I feel to have had my tush handed to me on a plate. What does God's Word say? Genesis 2:18 NIVIt is not good that man is alone. Looking back at her wildly successful and always adventurous career up to this point, it feels inevitable that Lisa Loeb was always going to be a songwriter and have a music career. But young Lisa probably could have done any creative job well. She grew up surrounded by music, yes, but she also had a passion for theater, and got her degree in comparative literature. It was her theater, voice acting and film side hustles that led Lisa to her first big break. Lisa's friend Ethan Hawke shared her song “Stay” with Ben Stiller, who included the song in the soundtrack for the film ‘Reality Bites.' “Stay” was a massive hit, and Lisa was the first-ever artist to have a #1 hit on the Billboard charts without a recording contract. The second act of Loeb's career is the main focus of our conversation. This chapter in the book of Lisa Loeb is all about… children's music! As her latest album, ‘That's What It's All About,' demonstrates, Loeb has managed to keep playfulness and curiosity at the center of her life well into adulthood. She has figured out the delicate balance of making music for kids that adults can relate to as well. Happy memories of music from her own childhood, as well as nods to her elders, make this new record a sonic storybook that listeners of all ages will enjoy.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us?
