Camp Kesem is a nationwide nonprofit organization that provides free, year-round support for children who have been impacted by a parent's cancer—whether their parent is currently battling cancer or has passed away. One of its core programs is a one-week residential summer camp for children ages 6 to 18. Nova first connected with Kesem in high school after his mother was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, joining as a camper. Motivated by a desire to “give back,” he later became a counselor and now serves as a Co-Director. Bean was strongly drawn to Kesem's mission because cancer has always been prevalent in her family, even though neither of her parents has had cancer. She joined during her second year of university and says she truly can't imagine life without Kesem. In this episode, Nova and Bean—both CSULB students studying STEM-related majors—share why they got involved with Camp Kesem, what it means to lead as students, and the “safe place to belong” they hope to create for children and families. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Jana Kramer, the actress, singer, podcast host, and mother joins us to pull back the curtain on the entertainment industry's less glamorous realities and share how she's found her authentic voice through it all.Jana's story begins with remarkable determination – handing her headshot to a soap opera actor while waitressing in Detroit, then convincing a casting director she lived in New York to land her first role. This fearlessness carried her through roles on Friday Night Lights and One Tree Hill before an unexpected pivot to country music during a writers' strike revealed another dimension of her talent. What makes Jana's perspective so refreshing is her willingness to acknowledge both her strengths and limitations. "I don't have the Carrie Underwood voice," she admits, explaining how she instead leaned into emotional authenticity and stage presence. This honesty extends to her candid revelations about industry politics – from being told her CRS performance caused single failures to restrictions on her acting career while pursuing music. Her observations about women in country radio illuminate persistent gender disparities that continue despite the success of predecessors like Faith Hill and Shania Twain.Beyond career insights, Jana opens up about personal growth through therapy, the challenges of balancing touring with Dancing with the Stars competition, and finding joy in her current focus on acting and podcasting. Her experience hosting multiple weekly podcast episodes echoes our own journey – navigating when to speak candidly versus holding back, and finding purpose in connecting with listeners despite occasional backlash.Whether you're a longtime fan from her One Tree Hill days, discovered her through country radio hits like "I Got the Boy," or are new to her story, Jana's resilience and multifaceted career offer inspiration for anyone navigating creative industries while staying true to themselves. Listen now to this conversation that feels less like an interview and more like friends catching up over coffee – or perhaps a bottle of wine, as Jana would prefer. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces! When life, faith, and music collide, the result can be both beautiful and challenging. In this deeply personal conversation, musician Mike Geo opens up about his 20-year journey through the music industry and his parallel spiritual evolution from cultural Catholicism to finding a more personal Protestant faith.Growing up in an Italian-American family in New York, Mike's earliest musical memories involve playing Beatles songs on a plastic guitar—a passion that would eventually lead him to form the band Saints in Exile. He candidly shares how the band walks an interesting line, creating music with Christian themes that isn't overtly "worship" but can still reach listeners who might otherwise avoid faith-based content. The heart of this conversation explores Mike's 2020 spiritual awakening, which he colorfully describes as "the year I got smacked in the face by Jesus." Through Bible study and apologetics, he found himself questioning aspects of his Catholic upbringing and embracing a grace-through-faith perspective that transformed his relationship with God. This shift wasn't without complications—from family traditions to online criticism when he baptized his daughter in the Catholic church.Perhaps most moving is Mike's vulnerability about personal trials, including his daughter's health challenges and a devastating series of losses in 2022 that inspired his controversial song "Be Refined." The lyric "sometimes church can feel so phony, like if you're not happy, you're not holy" resonated with many while creating friction with church leadership—highlighting the complicated relationship many believers have with religious institutions.Whether you're a music lover, someone questioning your faith background, or simply appreciate authentic stories of personal growth, this conversation offers valuable insights about finding your own path while remaining open to where God leads. As Mike puts it, "If you had a failure in church, it does not reflect God and what He wants from you."Support the show
In this energizing reunion episode of Inspiration Nation, Lee, Jose, and Ryan dive deep into the quote, “What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” With heartfelt reflection and a good dose of humor, they explore how personal growth, resilience, and fulfillment often emerge not from the destination but from the journey itself. Lee opens up about his recent DIY project and how the process—not the outcome—has helped shape his mindset, while Jose shares how his purpose has evolved from radical change to meaningful, everyday impact. Ryan adds insight on embracing non-linear growth and how the podcast has transformed each of their lives over the years. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking lasting motivation, practical goal-setting advice, and a reminder that small steps can lead to massive transformation. “The climb is the dream life,” Jose reminds us—and this inspiring conversation proves just that.
In this episode, I sit down with Vangelis (an investor from Greece) to unpack his first year of investing. We talk about:Why money is taboo and how the 1999 stock market crash still shapes how people see investing today. From grandparents teaching him delayed gratification to saving for years to buy his first PS3 and how those habits set the stage for his future. How Vangelis moved from saving → gambling in crypto → finally building a disciplined ETF-based portfolio. Why training in the gym and investing share the same formula: discipline, patience, and avoiding shortcuts. His story proves that even if you grow up in a culture where money isn't talked about, you can rewrite the script. What did you think of the episode? Twenty years ago, a small-town Georgia man with a dream released "Hicktown" and changed country music forever. Now, Jason Aldean sits down with us to unpack the remarkable journey from those uncertain early days to stadium-headlining superstardom. In this revealing conversation, Aldean takes us behind the velvet rope of the music industry, sharing how he nearly passed on songs that became career-defining hits and watched others he declined become massive successes for fellow artists. "I think songs land where they're supposed to," he reflects, detailing his instinctive approach to selecting material that genuinely resonates with him rather than chasing trends or concepts. The camaraderie between Aldean and the podcast hosts creates an intimate atmosphere as they reminisce about the lean years—playing to near-empty rooms, surviving on gas station food, and the faithful few who saw something special before the rest of the world caught on. Particularly moving is Aldean's tribute to producer Michael Knox, the one person who never abandoned ship when record deals fell apart: "I owe that guy everything."Exclusive reveals about his upcoming album (including multiple high-profile duets) will excite longtime fans, while his candid takes on everything from NFL draft picks to reality TV offers provide a glimpse at the man behind the music. Aldean's perspective on artistic integrity resonates throughout, especially when discussing how streaming has changed listeners' relationship with music: "I think a little bit of that's lost now."Whether you've followed Aldean since "Hicktown" or discovered him through "Try That in a Small Town," this conversation offers both nostalgia and fresh insights from an artist who's remained true to himself through two decades of country music evolution.
