Living Myth
Episode 460 - From Blindness to Renewed Vision

Living Myth

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2025 27:46

This episode of Living Myth is about blindness, both individual and collective, and about the need for genuine visions and visionaries. Western culture, enthralled with the heroic and trapped in the limits of egotism, continues to turn a blind eye to the deeper sense of self and soul that alone can give a renewed sense of vision that can see beyond modern ideas that have come to threaten the future of the Earth.   As long as we see through the lens of the heroic ego, we are likely to remain stuck in the territory of the same old willfulness and predictable blindness that cannot see ways to arrive at a deeper ground of understanding or a greater way to envision the living world. As the philosopher and humanist Erasmus said: "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." As the naturalist and poet Thoreau once stated: "I would give all the wealth of the world and all the deeds of all the heroes for one genuine vision."   Genuine change requires that we open our inner eyes and see from a deeper place. For, the new shape of the world only comes into view and becomes conscious to us when a vision arises from the darkness around us and from the unseen depths of our own unconscious. It is this kind of transformative vision that breaks through the blindness that both binds and polarizes us.   Something ancient and knowing is trying to catch up to us. And if our souls can stand deeply enough in the river of time, we can receive lost truths and wisdom from the deep well of memory as well as visions of the mostly unseen future. This combination of imaginative vision and deep memory has been the ongoing source of vitality and renewal that visionaries, seers and wounded healers throughout time have drawn upon to give us our true bearings even when the world itself seems to have lost its way.     Thank you for listening to and supporting Living Myth. Living Myth
Episode 459 - The War on Empathy and Vertical Imagination in the Soul

Living Myth

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2025 26:51

This episode begins by examining the rise of "vertical morality" that appears in both Christian communities and conservative politics and has given rise to a "war on empathy." Whereas Jesus famously preached love, mercy and care for the oppressed, vertical morality measures righteousness, not by goodness to others, but rather by something more simplistic and more divisive. Vertical morality declares that human behaviors are right or wrong based upon what the higher power says. As proponents put it: "Our ethics and behaviors have a duty to please God alone. We must obey by furthering the will of God, no matter the cost to other people." In a religious context, the higher power is God, in politics, it can become an authoritarian leader. As this viewpoint desensitizes people, true believers can justify demonizing all immigrants as criminals, defaming gay and trans people as predators, and condemning political opponents as, not just wrong, but evil. In direct contrast to vertical morality, Michael Meade proposes vertical imagination as a mostly lost quality of the human soul that would reconnect us to the heights of inspiration, but also keep us connected to the depths of genuine feeling. For the issue is not simply making a steady ascent on the ladder of morality. Rather, the point is for the soul to fully awaken to the process of ascent and descent that keeps Heaven and Earth connected, while it also connects us to the suffering souls of other people and to the all-embracing Soul of the World. When oriented from the deep sense of self and soul within us, our choices can become truly meaningful and our experiences genuinely unifying, rather than be divisive and traumatizing. In extraordinary times the soul expects to find extraordinary and enlivening experiences, not some final salvation based upon the ladders of morality, but rather many little redemptions found in moments when Heaven and Earth, the eternal and the time bound meet in the wisdom of our waking souls and merciful hearts. Every morning and evening, the earth sings of God’s glory. As our daily prayer and devotional remind us, the world is overflowing with beauty — mountains that reach toward heaven, oceans that echo His vastness, and people whose diversity reflects His creativity. Yet amid our busyness, we often overlook these wonders and miss the awe that leads us to worship. In this uplifting reflection, Whitney Hopler reminds us that awe isn’t reserved for mountaintops or faraway destinations — it’s woven into the everyday fabric of our lives. Whether we’re standing beneath a star-filled sky, walking through a quiet forest, or tasting a meal that celebrates another culture, each moment of wonder is an invitation to encounter God. Awe is not just an emotion; it’s a spiritual posture. When we open our eyes to God’s creation — both in nature and in people — our worries grow smaller, our gratitude deepens, and our hearts naturally overflow with joy. Today, slow down and look around. You’ll find that the whole world is whispering of God’s majesty. Today's Bible Reading:“The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.” – Psalm 65:8, NIV

First Church of Christ-Owosso, MI

How can being in awe of God change the way we see ourselves and our circumstances? In Psalm 8, David reflects on the majesty of God—the Creator of the heavens who still cares deeply for us. Even in the valley, the Shepherd is worthy of our praise. When we shift our focus from our problems to the greatness of the King of kings, we find strength to keep going. Awe reminds us who God is and who we are in Him. The valley still has a Shepherd, and when we set our minds on the One who leads us, our hearts are lifted even in the lowest places.

Wonder isn't a luxury—it's a lever for real change. We trace the quiet path from a single sunset or museum hall to the deep shift you feel when you come home from a trip and realize your mind, mood, and body aren't quite the same. Drawing on the science of awe and years of solo travel coaching, we break down how novelty, vastness, and meaning work together to rewire attention, dial down rumination, and open space for gratitude and connection. You'll hear how nature's big canvases—mountain ranges, star-splashed skies, ocean edges—create instant perspective, and why human-made marvels like Machu Picchu and the pyramids spark the same wide-open feeling. We talk about awe in cities and art galleries, in music that lifts the chest, and in small spiritual moments that make time feel deep. Along the way, we translate research into simple practices: a daily awe pause, choosing a “vastness anchor” for each destination, slowing your pace by 20 percent, and keeping a one-line reflection that turns fleeting wonder into lasting change. We also explore what's happening under the skin. Awe is more than emotion; it's whole-body. From brain networks lighting up to the calming shifts in breath and heart rate—and even potential immune benefits—these moments act like micro-reset buttons. Whether you're planning a big trip or staying close to home, you'll leave with a toolkit to find awe on purpose and let it do its quiet, healing work. The modern obsession with leaving the world began, oddly enough, with a fall. In 1827, John Nelson Darby tumbled from his horse, banged his head, and started writing a new idea into the Christian imagination. He sketched a future where the faithful are whisked away from the grit and grief of history while the rest of creation burns. A quick exit. An escape hatch. A promise that the real home is elsewhere and that the earth is disposable, like a cracked cup you set in the bin. This is not ancient. It is not apostolic. It is recent and it is seductive. It tells a suffering people, your pain will be over soon, the plane is already boarding, no need to change anything down here. If you have felt that tug toward evacuation, you are not foolish. You are tired. That fatigue is understandable in an age of fires measured in miles, plague-years mapped by grief, and a public life where cruelty is mistaken for strength. The promise of escape is shaped to meet that ache. It is also a lie.The Kin-dom is already here. That is the heart of realized eschatology, the teaching we carried in the episode and carry again in this essay. “Eschatology” means the study of last things. Realized means the future is not only ahead of us. It is breaking in now. Jesus described it as a reign spread out among us, hidden like yeast in dough, like a seed in soil, like light within the body. The Kin-dom is the web of right relationship in which all can breathe, eat, heal, and flourish. Not a passcode. Not a flight plan. The Kin-dom is a way of living. From DespairDespair is honest. It names what is broken. The temptation is to make despair a home. Rapture-thinking offers a furnished apartment in that neighborhood. It whispers, if the world is going to burn, the moral thing is to detach. Sell your goods. Quit your job. Leave your lease. Tell yourself it will be over soon and the pain will end. The trouble is simple. People get left behind in our leaving. Children, neighbors, the unhoused, the exhausted caregiver down the hall. And the earth herself. We must say this plainly because our faith is not a riddle. Jesus did not ask us to decode news cycles. He asked us to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, visit the sick and the imprisoned. These are not optional extras. They are the criteria he gave for what salvation looks like when it is walking around in a body. If we are known by our fruits, then escapism is sterile ground. It cannot grow love. There is another reason the escape story keeps getting told. It flatters power. If we are leaving any day now, then the powerful do not have to reckon with what their choices do to air, water, soil, and bodies. If the earth is a demo model to be replaced, who cares about rivers turned to poison or forests to ash. If the poor are props in a cosmic drama, who cares whether they eat. History shows the same pattern again and again. Doctrines that separate faith from works turn out to be very useful to those who profit from our apathy. To DiscoveryDespair does not have to be destiny. What if the ache we feel is not proof that the world is ending but a summons to begin. The Kin-dom has already arrived. We do not wait for permission to love. We do not ask empire how to heal. We participate in the life that is present. The early church learned this quickly. Expectations of an immediate ending gave way to the discovery that Christ is already here. Not absent. Present. Not awaiting return from a distance. Active in the web of relationships that make for life. If that is true, our question shifts. Instead of asking when we leave, we ask how to live. Instead of hunting for dates, we look for neighbors. This is where realized eschatology becomes simple and practical. If the Kin-dom is here, then our daily life is the place of devotion. Prayer is our breath when we choose to share air with one another. Eucharist is the shared table where food becomes love. Repentance is not a sad impossibility. It is repair as ordinary as changing a habit, paying a debt we owe to a community, or stepping back from a lie we learned to speak without thinking. There is an old word for hell in the gospels, Gehenna. It was a trash heap outside the city. When Jesus warns that some will be given over to Gehenna, he is not talking about a theme park in the afterlife. He is asking whether we want to live in a world organized like a dump, a society that treats people and places as disposable. The counter-picture is the Kin-dom. A shared life where no one is tossed aside. To DevotionDevotion is what love looks like on repeat. Not a one-time burst of zeal. A cadence. A rhythm. A set of holy repetitions that strengthen the soul for a lifetime of service. In the episode, we joked that rapture apparently means selling your Xbox and leaving a note. That is darkly funny. It is also a parable. If you can decide in a weekend to abandon your life, you can also decide in a weekend to begin again. The choice is yours. The drills are daily.Let us choose a set of practices that make us steady, supple, and brave. Think of them as everyday drills of freedom. No need for special terms. No need for perfect conditions. We begin where we are and repeat.1) Begin with breath and blessing. Each morning, sit for three slow breaths. On the in-breath, say inwardly, “Here.” On the out-breath, “Now.” Place a hand on your chest and another on your belly. Say out loud: “The Kin-dom is within and among us.” This is not a trick. It is a way of waking the body to reality.2) Touch the ground.Step outside if you can. Touch soil, trunk, leaf, or light. Name what you feel. Cool. Rough. Wet. Warm. This is devotion, not escape. The earth is the altar. You are a priest of the living world. Ask quietly, “How can I tend you today?”3) Choose one work of mercy.Every day, do one small act from the list Jesus gave. Feed someone. Offer water, literal or metaphorical. Share clothing or blankets. Write a card to someone ill. Give to a bail fund or visit someone who is locked away. If you cannot leave home, support a group that does. Make the Kin-dom tactile.4) Tell the truth with kindness.Practice a single sentence of truth-telling to pierce a lie you meet often. Not a speech. A sentence. For example, “No one is disposable.” Or, “Health care is not a luxury.” Or, “Libraries are sacred.” Use it when the moment comes. Gentle. Steady. Clear.5) Learn to say no.Refuse demands from power that require you to harm your neighbor, yourself, or the earth. Start small. Decline gossip that erases someone's dignity. Decline a purchase you know funds harm. Decline a schedule that turns you into a machine. Each no makes room for a larger yes.6) Make and keep a neighborly promise.Choose one ongoing commitment in your place. A monthly food distribution. A tenants' meeting. An interfaith meal. A neighborhood garden. Keep showing up. Devotion turns from idea to muscle when it is scheduled and communal.7) End the day with examen. Before sleep, name one wound you witnessed and one repair you practiced. Offer both to the Holy One. If you failed, ask for strength to try again. If you succeeded, give thanks without vanity. Tomorrow you will begin again. These are not random acts. They are kin-making acts that reveal the Kin-dom that already is. They keep us from the trap of despair and the temptation to acquiesce to the demands of power. They grow fruit where propaganda said nothing could grow. They teach the body that hope is not a mood. Hope is a practice. The History We Carry, The Future We ChooseIt helps to remember how we got here. After Darby's invention took root, other ideas cleared the way for it. Some preachers told us we are saved by believing the right things, not by doing the right things. Others taught that destiny is already set and our actions do not matter at all. Across centuries, those messages made it easier to bless wealth, ignore the poor, and outsource responsibility to an imagined timetable. Power liked that. Power still likes that.Creation Spirituality says no. It says the Holy is immanent, present in the soil, the river, the neighbor, the stranger. It says original blessing, not original sin, is the first truth about you. It says the Four Paths are a way to live: Awe that opens our eyes, Letting go of lies and fears, Creativity that builds what is needed, Transformation that turns wounds into wisdom. The Kin-dom is not hiding in the sky. It is shimmering in our shared life, asking to be chosen again.Scripture keeps the edge sharp:“The Kingdom of God is within you.”— Luke 17:21, WEB“Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”— Matthew 25:40, WEBRead those lines slowly. If the Kin-dom is within and among us, we cannot leave without leaving Christ. If Christ meets us in the hungry, the thirsty, the sick, the imprisoned, then love is measurable and daily. Faith is not nullified by works. It is made visible by works.A Pastoral Benediction For Beginning AgainHoly One, Light within all lights, you who kindle stars and soup kitchens, gardens and grief groups, teach us to stay. Unmask the cheap promise of escape. Give us instead the costly joy of devotion. Take our despair and convert it into discovery. Take our discovery and convert it into daily love. Let our hands become sacraments. Let our words become shelter. Let our homes become small monasteries of repair. The Kin-dom is here. Help us live like it.Amen.How We Keep GoingWhen the next prediction comes, and someone names a date for leaving, remember what Jesus said about dates and hours. Remember how relief can trick the heart. Then look around. Where are the needs at the bottom of the hierarchy. Food. Water. Shelter. Medicine. Safety. Belonging. Begin there. Begin again tomorrow. This is how we refuse the empire of abandonment. This is how we become citizens of the Kin-dom.You are not powerless. You are not alone. You are not late. The future you long for is arriving in your next act of care. It will not trend. It might not be glamorous. It will be real. The earth is not a prison to flee. It is the body of God, aching for our touch, ready to be healed.Creation's Paths book: . Please share your feedback with us we want to hear your experience. Thanks for reading! In this in-depth conversation, writer and franchise caretaker Andrew E.C. Gaska joins John Siuntres to discuss his work revitalizing three of science fiction's most enduring universes — Planet of the Apes, Buck Rogers, and Space: 1999.Gaska talks about balancing canon, continuity, and creativity as he builds connective tissue between classic stories and modern reimaginings. For Planet of the Apes, he explains how his novels Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes and Death of the Planet of the Apes expand the original film mythology, deepening the lore around the astronauts, the forbidden zone, and the political world of the apes. Turning to Buck Rogers, Gaska outlines his efforts to restore the franchise to its pulp and serial roots, steering away from camp and back toward the raw, forward-looking adventure of Philip Francis Nowlan's original creation. He also teases his plans for reconnecting Buck's 20th-century origins with a plausible 25th-century future. Finally, Gaska delves into Space: 1999, discussing his work on To Everything That Was and the Aftershock and Awe graphic novel, which translate the cult 1970s series into a coherent expanded universe. He breaks down the philosophical themes of isolation, humanity's place in the cosmos, and the Cold War anxieties baked into the show's DNA — and how he modernized them for today's audience. The conversation highlights Gaska's approach as both a fan and historian, preserving the essence of each franchise while giving it new life.

We explore how embracing uncertainty enables us to move beyond climate anxiety and despair to hope and action, with author and activist Rebecca Solnit.Summary: When you think about climate change, do you feel hope? In this episode of The Science of Happiness, we examine what it means to feel hopeful for the future of our planet. Renowned writer and activist Rebecca Solnit shares why she loves uncertainty, what gives her hope, and how hope empowers her. Later, we hear from climate scientist Patrick Gonzalez about why he believes climate hope is scientifically sound, and how much power we truly have to create meaningful change. How To Do This Practice: Acknowledge the hard stuff: Hope doesn't come from ignoring reality, it begins with honesty. Naming the fears, grief, or overwhelm we feel about climate change and life's challenges. Remember uncertainty leads to possibility: Despair often assumes the future is fixed. But history is full of surprises and turning points. When we leave space for uncertainty, we leave space for possibility. Focus on progress, not perfection: Every step forward matters. Clean energy expanding, policies shifting, communities protecting what they love. Small and large wins alike fuel the feedback loop between hope and action. Nourish yourself with beauty, awe, and joy: A sunrise, music, dancing, kindness, or the courage of others can all awaken something bigger in us. Awe quiets despair and helps us see new ways forward. Connect with others: Hope grows when it's shared. Joining movements, communities, or simply leaning on friends creates a sense of belonging and power. Together, the ants can move the elephant. Practice hope daily: Some days hope comes easily; other days it doesn't. That's normal. Journaling, noticing progress, limiting bad news, and showing up in community are all ways to keep practicing. If your days feel like swimming against a current you didn't choose, you're not imagining it. Researcher and communication coach Dr. Craig Mattson joins us to map the hidden “rip tides” of digital life—why tools that promised efficiency now burn our attention, how inboxes became group chats in disguise, and what it actually takes to protect focus without disconnecting from your team or your values. We trace Craig's path from small-town roots and radio work into scholarship on modern work culture, then dig into practical fixes that are humane and realistic. We look at email through Cal Newport's “hyperactive hive mind,” share ritual-level tactics to reduce chaos, and talk about Oliver Burkeman's reminder that constraints aren't flaws—they're the shape of a life. Craig brings a surprising companion to the conversation: the wisdom books of Job and Ecclesiastes. Awe, finitude, and the acceptance that most work won't be immortalized can lighten the pressure to make every task meaningful—and still point us toward daily joy, craft, and integrity. We also explore two slippery topics many teams miss: using AI as scaffolding (not a substitute for voice and judgment) and the power of indirect communication—those signals around the words that matter most for people with less organizational sway. If you've wondered whether to quit a job that feels hollow, we offer a grounded way to test redesign vs. exit, name harm clearly, and move with patience instead of panic. By the end, you'll have a clearer map for navigating overwhelm: fewer threads, cleaner decisions, kinder culture, and a practice of waiting that makes room for better choices. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review—what's one change you'll try this week?Let me know what you think of this episode? For the believer, this is gospel – good news! For the one who rejects this gracious offer, it will be a terrifying day to say the least! As with all the Holydays there is a past initiation with Moses and a past inaugural fulfillment with the first advent of Yeshua to our world nearly 2000 years ago. Paul informs us that there is a future final consummate fulfillment of the Holydays when Yeshua returns to our world the second and final time. Join us we will look at the themes of the Day of the Shofar, the Ten Days of Awe, the Day of Atonement and the Day of Judgement in their final fulfillment when Yeshua returns.

Sermon Summary – Behind the Veil Part six of a prayer journey series. Focus: moving through each stage of prayer (modeled by tabernacle furniture) to reach the manifest presence of God behind the veil. Tied to the season of the Days of Awe and the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). The Prayer Journey Thanksgiving (Entering the Gate) Acknowledge dependence on God. Gratitude for daily blessings builds humility and faith. Praise (The Courts) Praise God for His works in Scripture and in personal life. Strengthens confidence before making requests. Brazen Altar (Repentance) Clearing sin and disobedience—both actions committed and duties left undone. Laver (Speaking the Word) Affirming our position in Christ despite our condition. Candlestick (Holy Spirit Illumination) Welcoming the Spirit to renew the mind and guide prayer. Table of Showbread (Truth-telling with God) “Cup of coffee with God”: being fully honest—joys, anger, questions. Example: hard prayer for a loved one to be broken so they might return to God (like the prodigal son). Altar of Incense (Petition) Prayers rise as incense before God (Psalm 141, Revelation 8). Spirit-led petitions avoid selfish, flesh-driven requests. Behind the Veil (The Ark / Manifest Presence) Goal of prayer: intimacy with God, listening more than speaking. Jesus tore the veil, granting direct access—not just distant recognition but true fellowship. Lessons & Applications Manifest vs. Omnipresence: God is everywhere, but He desires to manifest Himself personally to His children. Prayer as Relationship: not “Walmart style” requests, but time invested with God. Hard Prayers: sometimes God calls us to pray for breaking, not blessing, to bring loved ones to repentance. Stillness & Meditation: modern culture overloads us with information; believers must learn to wait in silence before God. Faith & Persistence: Prayer must be effectual (energized by the Spirit), fervent (refusing to be denied), and prevailing (producing results). Biblical Anchors James 5: The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much. Ecclesiastes 5: Draw near to hear rather than offer the “sacrifice of fools.” John 14: Jesus promises to manifest Himself to those who obey His Word. Examples of persistence in prayer: Jacob wrestling, Bartimaeus crying out, the woman with the issue of blood, Zacchaeus climbing the tree. Encouragement & Call Prayer is the greatest access point of power, healing, provision, and presence available on earth. Believers are urged to: Commit more time to prayer. Enter with thanksgiving and praise. Seek not just God's hand but His face. Be patient like Job, consistent like Elijah, and persistent like the saints of old. Final invitation: Unbelievers—come to Christ today. Prodigals—return to the Father. Christians—renew prayer life and spend time behind the veil.

The teaching completes the study of the seven feasts of the Lord, focusing on the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot). Emphasis: these are God's feasts, not merely Israel's—they reveal His plan for the whole world. Christ fulfilled the spring feasts through His life, death, and resurrection; the fall feasts point to His return and final harvest. Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles Feast of Trumpets: The “alarm” call to repentance, beginning the 10 “Days of Awe.” Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur): High priest entered the Holy of Holies once a year to make atonement for Israel—foreshadowing Christ's ultimate sacrifice. Imagery: veil, bells and pomegranates on priest's robe, blood covering the mercy seat → fulfilled in Jesus' death and resurrection. Feast of Tabernacles: Commemoration of deliverance from Egypt, dwelling in booths, God's provision in the wilderness. Prophetic picture of final harvest and God “tabernacling” with His people in the future kingdom. Prophetic and End-Time Insights Tabernacles points to: Final Harvest: ingathering of nations (Revelation 14, Ezekiel 37). Protection and Provision: God shelters Israel in tribulation. Messiah's Reign: Christ dwelling with His people, fulfilling Ezekiel's promise. The Antichrist will desecrate the rebuilt temple mid-tribulation; Israel's eyes will be opened, leading to great tribulation. God will intervene, bringing judgment (wrath poured out in righteousness). Nations will be judged based on their stance toward Israel; blessing or cursing depends on alignment with God's covenant. Jerusalem in Prophecy Central focus: Jerusalem is the stumbling block for nations. Zechariah 14: God will defend Jerusalem, split the Mount of Olives, and establish His reign. Nations that resist worship during the Millennial Kingdom will face plagues and drought. The Feast of Tabernacles continues into the Millennium as a required festival for all nations. Application & Encouragement Believers must live ready for Christ's return—watching, not waiting for signs like the rebuilding of the temple before repenting. Call to repentance, intercession, and readiness: Repent like Israel's days of awe. Witness faithfully to the lost. Trust God's plan, even for loved ones not yet saved. Reminder: God loves the lost more than we do—Christ intercedes even now. Closing Notes Festivals reveal God's redemptive plan: past (fulfilled in Christ), present (salvation available now), and future (His return and reign). Encouragement: keep faith, pray for the lost, and be filled with hope as the end of the age approaches.

The Days of Awe are upon us. They always hit me with a familiar, bracing urgency: Look at your life. Consider your words, your choices. Where have you failed? Whom have you harmed? What will it take to begin again? If we're honest, most of us spend these days trying to clean up the usual messes: the casual slight, the simmering resentment, the careless word that cut deeper than we knew. We rehearse our regrets, and we whisper our promises to do better. But once in a while, a life comes along that reminds us just how radical, how shattering, how possible teshuvah (repentance) really is. That life belongs to Arno Michaelis. My guest is Dr. Christof Koch, PhD, a pioneering researcher on the topic of consciousness, an investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the chief scientist at the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation. We discuss the neuroscience of consciousness—how it arises in our brain, how it shapes our identity and how we can modify and expand it. Dr. Koch explains how we all experience life through a unique “perception box,” which holds our beliefs, our memories and thus our biases about reality. We discuss how human consciousness is changed by meditation, non-sleep deep rest, psychedelics, dreams and virtual reality. We also discuss neuroplasticity (rewiring the brain), flow states and the ever-changing but also persistent aspect of the “collective consciousness” of humanity. We discuss science, God and religion, including what science can and can't reveal about the existence of God and where religious faith and science do and do not align. We also discuss why questions about life's origins, miracles and the afterlife have persisted across time. Dr. DeSteno explains how religious rituals cause meaningful improvements in mental and physical health and how prayer and gratitude can markedly reduce stress, increase honesty and compassion and buffer against loneliness and despair. Finally, we explore what distinguishes religions and mission-based communities from cults, and we discuss the role that communities such as 12-step and Burning Man play in modern life.
