Now today's episode is with Kate Turner. Kate is a recognised leader here and abroad in the world of responsible investment, sustainable finance and ESG data, not to mention an all round great person who hikes, triathlons, meditates, parents and in general is pursuing ways to be helpful and service-oriented. I've known Kate a few years now, and having her on the show was a great pleasure. Kate has over twenty years of professional experience across environmental and climate law, developing market renewable energy and carbon product origination, ESG data services and responsible investment. She's worked across multiple sectors, and is currently serving as the Chair of the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia.I related to a lot of Kate's personal stories of what drove her to go into environmental law in the first place and a career of choices seeking to find places to make an impact, as well as how to parent in a world seemingly inundated with horror, destruction and deviance. In this chat we get through plenty - from working across markets to develop real projects generating real impact prior to the ESG data verification dilemma, the difficult balancing act between laborious ESG data processes and the need to make a real difference, the shifting investor landscape of the past few years, the differences between the value drivers for action on climate change compared to modern slavery, and the need to build bridges, cooperate and make possible the future we want by building the relational fabric and institutional capacity to withstand the change we want to bring about. We end the chat talking about our own experiences of parenthood in this moment. What to share and how to share it with small kids, the importance of a nature loving indoctrination program from a young age, and also how personal practices and professional support are things we all need to do this work and withstand the heartache of pain and suffering in this world.Kate is one of the most thoughtful sustainability practitioners in Australia, so to spend a little time and enjoy and learn from her perspectives were valuable, and I know you'll get lots from listening to her.Send me a messageThanks for listening. Matt Friedman | Modern Slavery Is Getting Worse

This podcast has returned to modern slavery three times now. Lisa Kristine showed us its face through her photography. Bruce Ladebu described what it actually takes to pull children out. And Matthew Friedman, in Episode 76, gave us the architecture: thirty-five years working across Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, the UN, and eventually the Mekong Club. That first episode opened with the story of an 11-year-old Nepalese girl in a Mumbai brothel who ran across the room, wrapped herself around Matt, and begged him to save her. He couldn't, that day. He came back with police and she was gone. This second conversation picks up in a deglobalising world. The USAID cuts have gutted sixty years of global anti-trafficking infrastructure. The $400 million available to address modern slavery has been halved. HIV clinics, maternal health programs, girls' education initiatives are all gone. And as Matt makes clear, the line from those cuts to a new trafficking victim is not abstract. It runs through hospitals, through debt, through desperation. This episode also goes somewhere I'm afraid I didn't communicate that well, the points of cultural judgement and critique. There's a story of a sixteen-year-old Bangladeshi girl, rescued after two weeks in a brothel, who was turned away at her own front door by a father who loved her because the shame she carried would make her siblings unmarriageable. That story sits at the centre of the hardest question in this conversation: when the cultural machinery enabling trafficking runs this deep, what can the outside world actually do about it? It's a delicate subject, I regret not treating it as such. $238 billion modern slavery generates annually flows through the same offshore plumbing this podcast has covered with Oliver Bullough and John Christensen. Matt explains how banks are already tracking it and how the Mekong Club is working with Interpol, crypto companies, and social media platforms to find it and cut it off. It's a pleasure to welcome Matt Friedman back to the podcast. ResourcesWalk Free Foundation's Global Slavery Index - https://www.globalslaveryindex.org/U.S. Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report - https://www.state.gov/trafficking-in-persons-report/Makon Club - Anti-Human Trafficking Organization - https://makonclub.org/USAID Human Trafficking Programs - https://www.usaid.gov/what-we-do/gender-equality-and-womens-empowerment/human-traffickingInterpol Human Trafficking Unit - https://www.interpol.int/en/How-we-work/Operations/Operation-ScorpionChapters00:00 The Impact of Deglobalization on Modern Slavery02:50 Statistics and Resources in the Fight Against Modern Slavery05:54 Consequences of USAID Cuts on Global Health and Safety08:38 Understanding Human Trafficking and Legal Responses11:40 Cultural Attitudes and Enforcement Challenges14:12 The Role of Vulnerability in Exploitation17:23 Identifying the Most Egregious Examples of Modern Slavery20:02 Cultural Change and the Role of Awareness23:22 Internal vs. External Approaches to Addressing Modern Slavery33:12 The Impact of Fiction on Awareness36:24 Taking Responsibility: Individual Actions Against Human Trafficking38:27 Creating Compelling Content: The Role of Film in Activism40:47 Cultural Sensitivity in Addressing Trafficking43:28 The Urgency of Addressing Human Trafficking50:08 Financial Institutions and Their Role in Combatting Trafficking57:47 The Power of Business in Addressing Human Trafficking59:52 Finding Hope: The Starfish Parable

EPISODE OVERVIEW What does it look like when purpose isn't a department, a report, or a communications device — but the operating system of an entire business? Sara King is General Manager of Purpose at Intrepid Travel, one of the world's most recognised purpose-led businesses. She's responsible for delivering Intrepid's environmental, social and governance commitments across a remarkable scope: climate action, gender equality, modern slavery, reconciliation, animal welfare and the Intrepid Foundation. This is Carolyn's fourth Intrepid episode — and there's something poetic about it landing at Episode 99. The very first guest on this podcast, back at Episode 2, was Geoff Manchester, co-founder of Intrepid. Some organisations just keep giving you things worth talking about. In this conversation, Sara and Carolyn explore what it truly means to embed purpose into business strategy — not as an add-on, but as the guide for every significant decision the business makes. Including some very difficult ones. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE Why Sara describes her role not as a purpose leader, but as a facilitator of others creating impact — and why that distinction matters How Intrepid embeds purpose into its board-level scorecard, treating impact targets with the same accountability as financial targets The Antarctica decision: why Intrepid exited a profitable product on environmental grounds — and why revenue targets went up anyway How Intrepid's shift from carbon offsetting to a decarbonisation fund is reshaping its entire business strategy and growth profile The vertically integrated model that enables Intrepid's local impact — and the India story that brought it to life Why Intrepid's Borneo family trip is a masterclass in turning environmental education into lasting memory How Intrepid created an activism trip in response to US national park funding cuts — and why it sold out in ten minutes What B Corp certification has meant for Intrepid's culture of accountability — and what the new standards will demand Why purpose-led hiring attracts over 220 applicants for a single role — and what executives need to speak fluently at Intrepid ABOUT SARA KING Sara King is Intrepid's General Manager of Purpose, responsible for delivering the company's environmental, social and governance commitments, including as a signatory to the UN Global Compact and a certified B Corp. Her remit includes Reconciliation, Modern Slavery, climate change, gender equality, animal welfare and the Intrepid Foundation. Prior to joining Intrepid, Sara held a number of roles at the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, including a posting to Vanuatu where she delivered a national investment incentive scheme for tourism. Sara holds a Master's in International Relations and Affairs from Macquarie University and a Graduate Certificate of Management from the UNSW Business School. ABOUT INTREPID TRAVEL Intrepid Travel has been a world leader in responsible travel for more than 35 years. Matt tells his journey through survivor/NGO stories, traces his personal journey from a shy child in Connecticut to 35 years of anti-slavery work across 35+ countries, and shows that ordinary people can become advocates. He assesses progress as limited relative to the scale of the problem (50 million in modern slavery; 110,000 helped; 6,000 convictions; $236B in profits vs. $400M, now $250M, to fight it), arguing that awareness is the main gap. He outlines how companies, especially banks, can start internally via leadership briefings, policies, awareness, targeted training, red flags, procurement review, and baseline assessments, linking efforts to ESG, business value, and reputational/regulatory risk. Matt also discusses AI's emerging role in detecting patterns across supply chains and transactions and emphasizes individual actions, pro bono support, and the importance of compliance work. There are at least 49 million enslaved people worldwide… and very little knowledge about how directly connected we are to them through supply chains (take the terrifying Slavery Footprint survey like Mathilda makes Helena do in this episode!) Over 100,000 are enslaved inside the UK, and that number is growing. This is no surprise, if we look at the data through a Media Storm lens. It correlates with government and media efforts to criminalise asylum seekers and irregular migrants, whether or not they have been trafficked here. Britain credits itself with pioneering the abolition of slavery. Yet it has a thriving underground labour market and imports billions of pounds-worth of goods every year produced with forced labour. British legislation is called “toothless” by activists. Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose all sell tomato products that would be barred from America under anti-slavery import controls. In this deep dive, we look at modern slavery at home and in overseas supply chains, buried in mainstream media despite underpinning almost every aspect of UK life. We're joined by trafficking survivor and podcaster Ilja Abbattista, and migrant worker rights activist Andy Hall, who has fought for years to see Dyson to pay a settlement fee to workers who say they were enslaved, beaten and tortured in a Malaysian factory producing parts for the company. Dyson says the settlement is not an admission of liability. With experience at Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and two war crimes tribunals plus fieldwork in over 30 countries Etelle brings unmatched expertise to a crisis most coffee drinkers know nothing about. Together they break down how the coffee industry traps 125 million farmers and workers in poverty, why coffee is the sixth largest driver of deforestation worldwide, and how exploitation in coffee-producing countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico directly fuels the immigration crisis at the U.S. border. They also tackle growing skepticism around NGOs, why certifications like organic and fair trade fall short, what Coffee Watch's groundbreaking lawsuits and CBP customs petitions could mean for the entire industry, and what everyday consumers can do right now to push for real reform. Ashurst’s Elena Lambros sits down with Australia’s inaugural Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Chris Evans, for a grounded, practical conversation about why modern slavery is no longer just a compliance topic but a core business risk that belongs in every boardroom. Drawing on his work with major corporates, regulators and cross-sector groups, Chris explains why finding modern slavery in a supply chain should be seen as a system working, not failing. He highlights the shift businesses need to make, from producing reports to tackling real risk, and walks through the areas where exploitation most often hides, including labour hire, subcontracting and high-risk global supply chains. Elena and Chris also explore how the ACCC’s recent guidance is clearing the way for companies to collaborate more confidently on remediation and due diligence. Some women in relationships believe that “my money is my money, and his money is my money.” This is a dangerous double standard that goes well beyond financial entitlement. Since money is the abstraction of time spent in labor, and labor is always spent in the application of the body, financial entitlement is effectively laying claim to another's labor – and the body that produced it. This is a form of modern slavery designed to restrict the freedom of another. In a Parliament first, National and Labour are teaming up to tackle modern slavery. Backbench MPs from the rival parties have put forward new legislation, and they are using a new rule to fast-track it up Parliament's agenda, skipping the usual "biscuit tin" lottery. But this big show of bonhomie appears to have been by necessity. Despite the prime minister's personal passion for the topic, it seems the ACT Party was blocking it from going through Cabinet. Evil rarely announces itself; it blends into policy debates, media cycles, and daily habits until victims become invisible. We pull the mask off modern sex trafficking, call it the slavery it is, and ask the uncomfortable question: who benefits when the public looks away? From cartel-driven exploitation to grooming scandals abroad, we connect the dots between criminal markets, political incentives, and the cultural appetite that turns people into products. We don't stop at outrage. We ground the conversation in Scripture that speaks to marriage, fidelity, and forgiveness, drawing a straight line from personal virtue to public justice. If the marriage bed is to be honored, then our imaginations must be trained toward loyalty and restraint, not consumption. Forgiveness frees hearts from bitterness, but it never excuses harm; true mercy seeks the good of the vulnerable and demands accountability from the powerful. Along the way, we honor a Medal of Honor recipient and revisit Churchill's warnings about systems that need a political police to quiet dissent—reminders that liberty with moral limits outperforms enforced equality that breeds misery.Expect hard questions and practical direction: learn the signs of coercion, support survivor services, back serious action against buyers and cartels, and push for policies that reduce vulnerability rather than import it. Most of all, begin at home. The daily disciplines of self-control, generosity, and prayer shape the kind of citizens who refuse to trade human dignity for ideological comfort. If this conversation moves you, share it with a friend, leave a review, and subscribe so we can keep building a community that chooses courage over silence.#Psalm23 #WinstonChurchill #Socialism Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe Countryside Book Series https://www.amazon.com/Countryside-Book-J-T-Cope-IV-ebook/dp/B00MPIXOB2

When it was introduced, the Modern Slavery Act 2015 was hailed as a world-leading piece of legislation. But a 2024 review of the legislation by the Modern Slavery Act 2015 Committee concluded that developments since, worldwide and in the UK, have led to the UK falling behind internationally. The number of people identified as victims of modern slavery has been rising year on year, with over 19,000 people referred to the authorities in 2024. Andrew Wallis is CEO of Unseen and chaired the landmark Centre for Social Justice report It Happens Here, widely acknowledged as a catalyst for the 2015 Act. In conversation with Andrew Crane (University of Bath), he discusses the current landscape of modern slavery in the UK. They explore what has changed over the past decade, where the gaps are, and what can be done. This IPR event took place on 21 January 2026.

How can we  address the problem of violence against the poor? International Justice Mission exists to answer this question with protecting and rescuing victims, bringing criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts. In this episode, International Justice Mission's founder and CEO, Gary Haugen, joins Mark Labberton to reflect on almost three decades of IJM's fight against violence and slavery worldwide—and the spiritual formation that sustains it. Haugen shares the origins of IJM in response to systemic violence against the poor, the evolution from individual rescues to transforming justice systems, and the remarkable rise of survivor leaders transforming their own nations. Together they reflect on courage, joy, and faith amid immense risk—bearing witness to God's power to bring justice and healing through ordinary people. Episode Highlights “Protecting the poor from violence is God's weight, but it's our work, and we're gonna seek to do it Jesus's way.” ”In this era, I just think what the world is aching to see is the followers of Jesus who have a incandescent freedom from fear and a life-giving joy.” “Most of this violence will go away if government does just even a decent job of enforcing the law.” “Our first commitment is to help each other become more like Jesus—and from that strength, to do justice.” “The greatest miracle of IJM is not only the results—it's the freedom from fear and the joy with which they've done it.” “God saw them in their darkness, and they now testify to the goodness of an almighty God who loved them.” Helpful Links and Resources International Justice Mission – https://www.ijm.org Gary Haugen, The Locust Effect: Why the End of Poverty Requires the End of Violence – https://www.amazon.com/Locust-Effect-Poverty-Requires-Violence/dp/0199937877 Gary Haugen, Just Courage: God's Great Expedition for the Restless Christian – https://www.amazon.com/Just-Courage-Expedition-Restless-Christian-ebook/dp/B001PSEQR4 Riverside Church Sermon by Martin Luther King Jr., “Beyond Vietnam” — https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/beyond-vietnam William Lloyd Garrison biography – https://www.britannica.com/biography/William-Lloyd-Garrison Rwanda Genocide Investigation (UN Historical Overview) – https://www.un.org/en/preventgenocide/rwanda About Gary Haugen Gary Haugen is the founder and CEO of International Justice Mission (IJM), the world's largest international anti-slavery organization. Drawing on reports from DHS, Fox News, and firsthand accounts, they detail how DNA testing was suspended to conceal crimes, how campaign donations flowed from exploitative growers, and how known sex offenders were employed alongside trafficked children. The segment argues that a corrupt alliance between cartels and political leaders fuels modern-day slavery, human rights abuses, and systemic child exploitation in America.

The Sex Slave Empire:They promised personal growth and empowerment. Instead, they delivered branding irons, sex slavery, and psychological torture that destroyed hundreds of lives. This is the horrifying true story of how Keith Raniere transformed a self-help organization into a criminal empire built on human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and mind control techniques that would make the CIA jealous. From Hollywood actresses to wealthy heiresses, discover how NXIVM's predators systematically identified, groomed, and enslaved their victims using scientifically-designed psychological manipulation. We'll expose the shocking recruitment methods that targeted vulnerable women, the sadistic initiation rituals that included literal branding with Raniere's initials, and the blackmail system that kept victims trapped in sexual slavery for years. Featuring leaked audio recordings of Raniere's sick fantasies, testimonies from survivors who escaped the nightmare, and expert analysis of the mind control techniques that turned independent women into obedient slaves. This episode reveals how modern slavery operates in plain sight, hidden behind legitimate businesses and charismatic leaders who weaponize trust and vulnerability. The most dangerous predators don't snatch victims off the street – they convince them to walk willingly into hell, believing they're being saved.

Human trafficking is a widespread crisis affecting over 21 million people, with traffickers profiting from exploitation. The church has a responsibility to confront this injustice by raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, and addressing cultural factors that enable trafficking, such as the over-sexualization of women. Christians must move beyond indifference, engaging in relief, restoration, and reform while ensuring the gospel remains central. Men should be raised to be protectors, and families must have open conversations about the dangers of online grooming and exploitation. Financial support is valuable, but giving time and encouragement to anti-trafficking efforts is equally important. Through prayer, action, and biblical justice, believers can work to combat human trafficking and support those affected.Send us a textThanks for listening!
