The Congo is four times larger than France, it's bigger than India, it's bigger than Texas, Alaska, California & Montana combined - the equator runs right through it's middle and makes it the second largest rainforest on the globe - it's impossibly rich in resources, and desperately poor in economics. In those 13 years of private ownership, Leopold oversaw potentially one of the most brutal regimes of extraction the world has ever known. The population was estimated to have halved in those 13 years, more than 10 million deaths. It was an exploit in mass slavery, mass death, bodily mutilation and mass extraction. Ivory and wild rubber were in high demand, and so under the guise of media manipulation and PR mastery, Leopold convinced the world that these goods were in fact being traded with, rather than extracted from, the Congo. The horror, however, could only be concealed for so long. A fella by the name of Ed Morell who worked for a shipping company in Liverpool noticed the bounty of ivory and rubber arriving from the Congo, with only men and arms making the journey back. His suspicion grew, he found accounts from missionaries and others who had been, and mounted a campaign to undermine the constant wall of propaganda Leopold had financed. In 1908, the Belgium state purchased the Congo off Leopold… where the country remained a colony of Belgium until 1960. And for a myriad of reasons, for which we address in the podcast, the Congo today is still on the back foot. Kinshasa, the capital city already has a bigger population than Paris, and is projected to be as much as 40,000,000 by 2050. The Congo today is among the most resource rich nations on earth, but among the least developed. It still attracts the same predation for extraction as it ever has, although all together less forceful and less violentThe man I speak with on the podcast today wrote the definitive history of this period. His name is Adam Hochschild, he's an author, journalist and historian and wrote in 1998, 'King Leopold's Ghost'. 00:00 Congo's Dark History & Adam Hochschild03:03 Leopold's Brutal Regime09:02 Modern Parallels of Exploitation12:11 The Unique Case of King Leopold14:58 The Mechanics of Control & Media Manipulation20:45 Campaigning Against Atrocities: The Legacy of Morrell34:22 Colonialism and Forced Labor: The Belgian Congo36:16 The Rubber Boom and Its Consequences38:09 Criticism Of The Book & Congolese Resistance42:57 Nationalism and Colonialism: Morel's Perspective44:48 The Impact of Colonialism on Modern Nations47:17 Geography and Development: The Congo's Challenges49:51 Natural Resources and Corruption52:27 The Future of the Congo: A Grim Outlook57:22 Serendipity(There was an technical difficulty right at the end of the conversation, which is why it cuts off) Consider leaving a review on whichever platform you're listening on!

Human trafficking is a widespread crisis affecting over 21 million people, with traffickers profiting from exploitation. The church has a responsibility to confront this injustice by raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, and addressing cultural factors that enable trafficking, such as the over-sexualization of women. Christians must move beyond indifference, engaging in relief, restoration, and reform while ensuring the gospel remains central. Men should be raised to be protectors, and families must have open conversations about the dangers of online grooming and exploitation. Financial support is valuable, but giving time and encouragement to anti-trafficking efforts is equally important. Through prayer, action, and biblical justice, believers can work to combat human trafficking and support those affected.Send us a textThanks for listening! Host Sarah Henry is joined by Partner Solicitor Nusrat Uddin, Head of the Public Law and Human Rights department at Wilsons Solicitors. In this episode, Nusrat shares insights into her work, with a focus on modern slavery, forced labour, and human trafficking. She discusses several groundbreaking cases she has worked on, as well as her involvement in Business and Human Rights cases, particularly those addressing forced labour within supply chains. Nusrat Uddin specialises in public law and human rights, with a particular focus on modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking. She brings cases against central and local government bodies for failing their duties, as well as claims against those who have exploited their workers. In 2023 she was awarded Public Law Lawyer of the Year in the Legal Aid Lawyer of the year awards. Nusrat also specialises in Business and Human Rights work. She has provided evidence for several US investigations into complaints against companies, from the fashion industry through to rubber gloves. US authorities have banned products from entering the US where indicators of forced labour in supply chains have been found. She believes the UK's approach is far weaker and is critical of the Modern Slavery Act's approach. Nusrat's team have pioneered the first case against the UK authorities in relation to forced labour in their own supply chains, which settled with the government conceding and agreeing to improve their due diligence. The case was covered widely in the media and Nusrat was interviewed by Channel 4 News which can be seen here. She is currently building a second case in relation to the government's due diligence of Uyghur made products in their supply chain. Nusrat was instructed in the key Supreme Court case of Wong v Basfar 2022 dealing with diplomatic immunity in trafficking civil claims. The Supreme Court established for the first time worldwide, a current diplomat is not protected from claims of human trafficking. The judgment was groundbreaking with global political implications. Nusrat was presented with the 2022 Anti-Slavery Day Award for Outstanding Contribution to Reducing Vulnerabilities, in Parliament, for her work on this case. Nusrat has a particular focus on improving state support for victims of trafficking and modern slavery. Last year she was instructed in the lead case, K and AM v SSHD [2018] EWHC 2951 (Admin), challenging the cuts by the Home Office to subsistence monies paid to support victims. The High Court found the cuts to be unlawful, resulting in victim support being reinstated to the full amount, and rebates being paid of around £1 million. She often advocates for safeguarding support and accommodation for victims who are facing homelessness and risks of further exploitation. Nusrat was profiled as Lawyer in the News in the Law Society Gazette for the successful case. Nusrat was also awarded a Research Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to compare the UK's models of support to those in the US and Europe, for victims of trafficking and modern slavery who are involved with criminal prosecutions against their traffickers. She presented her research findings at the end of last year and made recommendations to improve the UK's systems. The research has been shared widely, including by Anti-Slavery International and endorsed by Luis deBaca who was the US ambassador for trafficking. She also gave oral evidence in Parliament to the Home Affairs Select Committee for their Inquiry into Modern Slavery in 2019. She outlined key issues for victims in relation to support services, immigration and the criminal justice system; particularly highlighting problems of victims being wrongfully criminalised by the police and immigration systems, instead of being correctly identified and protected. Nusrat is also currently instructed in a significant challenge to police policies in relation to this issue. In recognition of her work in this field, Nusrat was shortlisted in the 2019 Anti-Slavery Day Awards, for Outstanding Contribution to the fight against Slavery, in the Enabling and Supporting Survivor Rights and Entitlements category. Nusrat was Highly Commended in the 2019 Law Society Excellence Awards for Human Rights Lawyer of the Year. Nusrat was also shortlisted as a finalist for Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year 2019, in the Children's Rights category, organised by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group. Nusrat has gained international experience having worked in the Human Rights and Legal Aid department of BRAC in Bangladesh, (formerly Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) one of the world's largest NGOs. She also volunteered at Al-Haq, a Human Rights NGO based in Palestine, building potential cases against corporations operating in the West Bank. Nusrat is currently a Trustee of Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights.

Both of the experiences led her to to deep inner work, develop more empathy and compassion, and find her true purpose in life of helping marginalised and exploited people.Sylvia mentioned that her new book "Fearless" is being released on October 29th. She has been busy promoting the book and is planning a series of launch events and speaking engagements to share its message of empowering women to overcome fears and reach their full potential. She further shares how growing up as a Korean-Canadian was challenging, asa she felt like she didn't fully belong in either culture. This experience of being "in the middle" actually became a superpower, helping her develop strong communication and cross-cultural skills.Sylvia's interest in the issue of human trafficking and forced prostitution was sparked at a young age when she learned about the experiences of Korean "comfort woman" during WWII. This led her to dedicate much of her career to investigating and exposing these atrocities, and advocating for survivors. To manage the intensity of her work and busy schedule, Sylvia shared that she relies on self-care practices like massage, exercise, and spending time in nature. Send us a textWelcome to part one of a special two-part show with renowned advocate and expert in the field of human trafficking, and the founder of Libertas International Tyler Schwab. I'm going to warn you that the subject we cover during this interview is deeply disturbing and shocking, but I believe necessary to uncover the tragedy that is human trafficking. Here are some shocking numbers for you to think about. It is estimated that over 40 million victims worldwide are trapped in human trafficking today. One in four victims are children. Human trafficking generates over 150 Billion dollars annually. This sick and twisted business has to be exposed and stopped!Tyler and his nonprofit Libertas International are doing their best to put an end to this horrible business and help the survivors of this despicable industry. If you are a regular listener to the show, you know I like to have fun and attempt to lighten serious subjects. That wasn't possible for this episode. We are talking about modern slavery. But I feel we need to bring this crime to light and punish the criminals who facilitate this heinous crime. In today's episode we discuss:·      How witnessing a crime on January 6, 2011, changed his life forever.·      Tyler's beginnings in fighting modern slavery.·      What is Human Trafficking? You have heard it, why is in the shadows of mainstream media and pop culture?·      40 million people trapped in Human trafficking in the world! How can this be?·      How does human trafficking generate over 150 billion a year?·      How he educated himself regarding human trafficking and how and why he started his non-profit, Libertas International.·      The border crisis and human trafficking. ·      The Columbian connection. Please visit Tyler's website and consider donating to this worthy cause!Check out the new Cops and Writers YouTube channel!Check out my newest book, The Good Collar (Michael Quinn Vigilante Justice Series Book 1)!!!!!Enjoy the Cops and Writers book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website.  What would you do if you lost the one you loved the most? January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. I think that this powerful episode will make you stop and really think about how this is a problem, not just in large cities, but also could be in your own backyard. Today, I sit down with Becky Murray, the founder of One By One and author of Embrace the Journey. Becky shares her incredible story of growing up in a Christian home, her journey of faith, and the life-changing moment that led her to dedicate her life to ending modern slavery. Becky recounts the heartbreaking encounter with a 9-year-old girl in Africa that revealed the harsh realities of child exploitation. This moment became the catalyst for One By One, a nonprofit organization that fights human trafficking, provides resources for vulnerable children, and addresses issues like period poverty through initiatives such as The Dignity Project. We also discuss the incredible work of the Mercy Center, a safe haven for girls rescued from trafficking and exploitation. Becky shares how One By One not only rescues but also rehabilitates and empowers these young survivors, helping them find healing and equipping them with skills for a brighter future. Key topics include: Becky's personal journey of faith and her heart for vulnerable children. The story behind the founding of One By One. The Dignity Project: addressing period poverty and preventing trafficking. The Mercy Center: rescuing, healing, and empowering young survivors. How each of us can make an impact by loving our neighbors and standing against injustice. This episode is a testament to the power of one moment, one life, and one act of faith to bring hope and transformation. Bio: Becky Murray is the founder and CEO of One By One. Her life was transformed in 2006 when a young girl she bought a pair of shoes for on the streets of Sierra Leone assumed she wanted sexual favours in return. This moment sparked the formation of One By One, and after acquiring land in Africa in 2009, One By One Kenya opened its doors in 2012. Becky is also the founder of the Dignity Project and is the host of Embrace The Journey, to be seen on TBN UK. She has spoken at both the White House and 10 Downing Street and has appeared on the BBC and many other media outlets. She is married to Matthew and the couple have one son, Josiah. ABOUT ONE BY ONE One By One is a charity with a heart for the vulnerable across the world. Formed in 2011 by Becky Murray, One By One's first project was its residential facility in Kenya which aims to rehouse and give hope to children that otherwise would be living in abject poverty. More recently, a rescue centre was built near to South Asia, housing victims of human trafficking. There are more than 3 million people in slavery in this nation, being forced to work in some of the country's 20,000 brick kilns. One By One has a heart to reach, rescue and restore lives across South Asia. The charity also runs a widows' programme in North Sri Lanka, working with women whose husbands were killed in the brutal civil war. In addition, The Dignity Project – that provides teenage girls with re-usable sanitary items and education – was formed in 2015, and has now expanded to nine countries. Nearly 45,000 girls have been reached through the Dignity Project since its launch in the Houses of Parliament. Most recently we have started a project within Jinja Uganda, where our focus is on educating the local community and health care professionals on the dangers and signs of Human Trafficking. In addition to this we have expanded the Dignity Project to become a year long curriculum that is delivered across schools within Jinja. One By One is a registered charity in the UK and a registered 501(c)(3) in the USA. All funds given to either entity are governed by One By One's executive team and are restricted for use in One By One's ongoing projects across the world. In Episode 190 of the R.O.D. Podcast, we dive into one of our most thought-provoking conversations yet. Could the concept of slavery—something historically brutal and oppressive—hold a controversial potential to awaken unity, self-determination, and collective empowerment within the Black community today? In this episode, we explore why some argue that returning to these “chains” might be a catalyst for overcoming divisions, rejecting Euro-Christian ideologies, and rekindling solidarity against systemic injustices. Our goal is to examine both sides of this debate, asking hard questions like: How can unity thrive under oppression? Would modern-day adversity compel more people to recognize the real adversaries? Join us in this deep discussion that challenges beliefs, identity, and the struggle for Black liberation. Let's uncover if there's truth to this claim—or if it's simply a call for deeper self-awareness and empowerment. Children's Rescue Initiative founder Bruce Ladebu joins us to discuss the 20 years he's spent liberating hundreds of people from slavery and trafficking! What We Discuss with Bruce Ladebu: Human trafficking and slavery affect around 40 million globally, generating $150 billion per year. Exploitation includes forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trafficking of all ages. Heartless and often sadistic traffickers prey on the most vulnerable and desperate populations, including disaster-stricken children and marginalized minorities. Corruption and apathy among local authorities and law enforcement allow this atrocity of an industry to thrive. Rescuing trafficking victims is perilous work, but Bruce Ladebu's team has saved hundreds over the past 20 years. Extensive physical and mental rehabilitation in the aftermath is often necessary for these survivors to cope with the trauma they've endured. Children's Rescue Initiative is Bruce's organization that provides funding for a variety of programs that help to rescue children from trafficking and slavery, provide them with shelter and care, and help them reintegrate into society. Donating cash is just one way to help — people can also volunteer their time to organizations like Children's Rescue Initiative that are working to combat human trafficking and slavery. There are a number of ways to volunteer, such as working in a shelter, providing legal assistance, or advocating for policy changes. And much more...
