Episode NotesEpisode 93: Matthew 5 - Blessings, Curses, and Moving Mountains: The Architecture of Matthew's GospelMarch 4, 2025 - Host: Dr. Gregory HallIn this episode we're diving into Matthew chapter 5 and we'll notice a fascinating aspect of Matthew gospel. Matthew organizes Jesus' major addresses into five distinct sermons. The first and the last of which are delivered on mountains. and today, we'll unpack a link back to the Old Testament story of Moses and Joshua.Resources Referenced and/or Read:Thanks to Dr. Warren Gage for the bulk of the material in this episode. Gage, W. A. (2010). Essays in Biblical Theology (pp. 63–65). Warren A. Gage. - The Blessings and Cursings upon Gerizim and Ebal - The law of Moses instructed the people, when Joshua led them into the good land promised to the fathers, to assemble before the mountains of Gerizim and Ebal for a ceremony reaffirming their fidelity to the Lord and the law of the covenant (Deut 27–28). The entire nation of Israel was to be arranged in ranks by their tribes in the valley between the slopes of the two mountains. Six tribes stood upon the skirts of Ebal, and six tribes stood upon the skirts of Gerizim. Joshua spoke all the law of Moses in the hearing of the twelve tribes of Israel (Josh 8:30–35). The six tribes upon Gerizim spoke the blessings that would be poured out as long as the nation obeyed the law and the covenant (Deut 28:1–14). The six tribes upon Ebal spoke the curses that would come upon the nation if they disobeyed the law (Deut 27:15–28). All the tribes affirmed that, upon their disobedience, a nation from afar would come upon them like the eagle, besieging the fortified walls of Israel (Deut 28:49–52) and driving all the people into exile among the nations (Deut 28:64–68). As each group of six tribes spoke the blessings and the cursings of the law, the six tribes opposite answered with an antiphonal avowal of their fidelity to the covenant and their imprecatory oath of obedience to the Lord. In the New Testament, Matthew's Gospel portrays Jesus as the True Joshua presiding over a new ceremony of blessing and cursing. To recognize this portrayal, we must understand something of the structure of the first Gospel. Matthew arranges his Gospel around seven mountains. These mountains are 1) the mountain of the temptation (4:8), 2) the mountain of the beatitudes (5:1), 3) the mountain of the separation (14:23), 4) the mountain of the feeding in the wilderness (15:29), 5) the mountain of the transfiguration (17:1), 6) the mountain of the Olivet discourse (24:3), and 7) the mountain of the commissioning (28:16). The seven Matthean mountains are arranged chiastically, with corresponding pairs arrayed around the central mountain of the wilderness feeding. The mountains relevant to the Joshua typology are the second mountain and the sixth, which frame Matthew's five discourses. The second mountain is the mountain of the beatitudes in Galilee, the site of the first discourse called the “Sermon on the Mount” (5:1–8:28). The corresponding sixth mountain, the site of the last or “Olivet Discourse,” is the mountain before Jerusalem (24:3–26:1). Matthew's typology of the True Joshua is built around the relationship between the blessings pronounced upon the mount of the beatitudes in Galilee and the woes (or curses) spoken against the Pharisees in Jerusalem. By juxtaposing these mountains, Matthew anticipates the blessings to descend upon the mountain of the Gentiles, which has become Gerizim, and the destruction to come upon Jerusalem, which has become Ebal. Jesus solemnly pronounces nine beatitudes upon the mountain in Galilee (Matt 5:3–12). Eight corresponding woes or curses are enumerated against Jerusalem, framed as antiphonal responses to the beatitudes spoken in Galilee. The juxtaposition of Matthew's two mountains constitutes the restatement of the solemn ceremony at Shechem, and darkly foretells the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the people for their disobedience to the law of Moses in rejecting the Prophet of whom Moses spoke (Matt 24:2).Matthew Study Resources at the Rethinking Scripture Website: https://rethinkingscripture.com/matthew-study-resources/Here are a few resources regarding my first tour guide in Israel, Halvor Ronning.New American Standard Bible: 1995 update (Mt 4:18–22). In this sermon, Pastor Christopher talks about the meaning behind purposeful actions. He breaks down Paul's challenge to the Thessalonians, and what it means to work at love and love working. Paul first complements the Thessalonians on their practice of brotherly love and then gives three ways they can improve it: Slowing down, sticking to their own issues, and working with their own hands. Pastor Christopher breaks down what Paul meant by these three ideas and talks about the meaning of Busy Bodies and Lazy Bodies. How can we grow in love when we're already doing love? In this sermon, Pastor Christopher talks about Passion for Purity and the importance of sexual purity. He breaks down three tasks Paul instructs the Thessalonians to do: stay away from the participation of sexual impurity, how important it is to prepare and prevent sexual sin, and how to protect others from being led into that sin. He talks about the statistics of how many people, including believers, are subject to or participate in sexual sin, and the effects it can have on mental health. Finally, he talks about the importance of keeping your marriage pure, and how abiding in purity and abstaining from sexual sin invites the Holy Spirit to live in us. Thanks for listening. As believers, we work hard in our faith. In this sermon, Pastor Christopher talks about Paul's gratitude towards God concerning the Thessalonians' good works. However, even though the Thessalonians were thriving in their faith, Paul shared that upon his next visit, he could complete what they were lacking. Christopher also talks about the two different kinds of love in the Greek language, and which one the Bible mentions most. In this sermon, Pastor Christopher talks about the importance of ministering to new, or young, believers. He breaks down why Paul sent Timothy to Thessalonica, and how Timothy was to Strengthen and Encourage the Thessalonians. He also talks about Paul's teachings on persecution, and how it is our destiny. Finally, Christopher shares how seasoned believers should protect new believers and help them be aware of Satan's temptations. How did Timothy's report back to Paul encourage him? How do new believers have a ministry for seasoned Christians? Why should we expect suffering as believers? Listen to learn more! LAKEVIEW MISSIONARY CHURCH, 810 S. In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:1-3 Imagine losing your job, many of your friends, maybe even experiencing rejection from your extended family. How might you feel, and how might your hardship and pain affect your faith? While I don't know how I'd respond in such a situation, I do know how I reacted, decades ago, when a series of difficult events left my family and I in a three-year period of constant transition, loss, and uncertainty. Initially, I felt abandoned by God, not chosen and loved. But God used that dark season to deepen my faith and the bonds within our family. That said, I've never experienced persecution like the Christ-followers addressed in 1 Peter. After turning to Christ for salvation, these mainly Gentile believers “suffer[ed] grief in all kinds of trials,” inflicted by their Greek and Jewish neighbors. If evaluating their standing from their circumstances alone, these precious men and women would not have felt chosen. Therefore, the opening of Peter's letter must've felt like an assuring balm to their wounded souls. “To God's elect,” he wrote, “chosen according to the foreknowledge of God” (1 Peter 1a, 2a, NIV). How comforting to read the reminder of God's perfect wisdom—of all things past, present, and future. He knew, before they even understood who Jesus was, precisely what they'd experience each day after they yielded their souls to Him. He chose them—not for destruction or defeat, but for victory and eternal joy. In Christ, they'd received a living hope—a firm promise that no one and nothing could take away. They could know, with certainty, where they were heading and everything that awaited them when they arrived. In the New International Version, quoted above, Peter refers to these men and women as exiles. The New American Standard Bible calls them aliens, and the New Living Translation refers to them as foreigners. The Greek word behind each of these translations indicates someone temporarily residing in an area that is not their permanent home. Intersecting Life and Faith According to Scripture, this applies to all of us. This present world is not our home. We are, essentially, passing through—steadily progressing toward our eternal destination and the inheritance secured for us by the death and resurrection of Christ. Today's passage reminds me of Christ's words in Matthew 6:19-21, when He said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” That doesn't mean God doesn't want us to enjoy nice things, invest in a 401K, or take relaxing vacations. But He does warn us of the danger of allowing those temporary pleasures to capture our heart. When that happens, the hardships we experience feel all the more painful because we're less anchored in Christ and overly attached to the things we've lost. Peace comes when we remember that we're travelers, passing through, and therefore, today's pain won't last forever. And, we are heading toward a beautiful, joyful, certain and secure paradise where we will no longer experience pain, sickness, persecution or heartache. A place where we will live with God, completely whole, for all of eternity. Because we are chosen and called to a hope-filled future, held secure by the God of hope. Psalm 119This “is the longest psalm in the collection and the longest chapter in the Hebrew Bible, 176 verses or lines of poetry” Alter, 419. Its size has oft times discouraged serious study. Weiser in the Old Testament Library series views it as wearisome in its repetition of motifs and says it opens the door for legalism, but he offers no commentary on the text- Weiser, 739-741.“It is recited at the Feast of the Pentecost, the spring festival observed fifty days after Passover, which celebrates the giving of the Torah to Moses at Sinai during the wilderness wanderings” NICOT, 870. “The psalm is composed of twenty-two stanzas of eight verses. Each of the eight verses of a stanza start with the same letter of the Hebrew alphabet, as the poet works his way from the beginning (aleph) to the end (taw). The acrostic form gives a sense of completion and totality, and to be sure, by the end of the psalm, one feels that the poet has indeed fully covered his subject” Longman, 403. The Torah “applies to everything at every moment, and apart from it, there is nothing worthy be called life” McCann, 1166.“He refers to God's law with eight different Hebrew words" Longman, 403. Here are the transliteration of the Hebrew words and the translation of these terms in the New American Standard Bible. 1. tora- law2. eda-statue3. piqqud-precept4. hoq-decree, 5. miswa- command6. mispat-judgment7. dabar-word8. imra-word, promise"Perhaps these eight words explain why there are eight lines in each stanza, although only five of the stanzas employ all eight words. No stanza uses fewer than six of them” Longman, 403. The writer of the Psalm is diligently seeking God with all His heart (119:2, 10).Because he loves God, he loves every word out of His mouth. He loves God's words, delights in His statues (119:14, 16, 47). He covets God's words more than great riches (119:14, 72, 127).He seeks to keep, obey God's words (119:1, 2). He wants to keep God's precepts diligently, fully (119:4). This careful obedience to God leads to praising and thanking God (119:7). It leads to him bursting forth in praise (119:12). Jesus is the Word made flesh- John 1:1, 14.Even Jesus used the word of God to resist sin- Ps. 119:11; Matt. 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13.

What is God showing you about this “daily bread?”Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God's mouth.”- Matthew 4:4 MSGI am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”- John 6:48-51 NASB 1995And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”- Luke 22:19 NASB 1995We read the opening prayer from the New King James Version, Matthew 4:4 from the New American Standard Bible 1995 and The Passion Translation, in addition to John 6:32-35 TPT.Your spirit needs sustenance from the word of God, just as your body needs sustenance from food. Janet's gives a Word of Encouragement from John 16:33 and I Peter 5:1-10 Hey you guys! The Lord as put this word in my heart just for you. I don't know why, but maybe you've been asking the question, “why am I suffering so bad? How long do I have to suffer?” Maybe you've been telling yourself this, “I'm doing the will of God, I'm a good person, I pay my tithe, I go to church every Sunday, I'm reading my Bible But…GOD…. I'm still suffering Why? LET'S DIVE IN TO John 16:33 & I PETER 5:1-10 THIS IS OUR FOCUS FOR TODAY! 1 Peter 5:1-10 New American Standard Bible 10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. Greek perfect/restore 2675/katartizō (literally "adjust down, exactly") refers to parts working precisely together – fulfilling their intended purpose (potential)" because properly adapted (adjusted). [The root word expresses what is "joined together" in proper adjustment. It means to frame all the parts into an over-all design – so that each part works together "in good order”. 2675 (katartizō) (perfect or restore) is "used of reconciling factions, setting broken bones, putting a dislocated limb into place, mending nets" For example when you have a dislocated shoulder, you go to the ER and the doctor will pop it back in place. It's painful when it's out of place, and it's more painful to pop it back in place. The bone is now set in its proper place so that it can heal. What Paul was saying, after you have suffered a little while, the Lord will adjust you, move you around, put you back in your proper place so that you can function and be in good working order to fulfill the plans that He has written over you life. Greek confirm stērízō: ”a support to fix, plant down";"stand," to set fast or fix you; give you support which secures (firmly establishes); solidly plant (to eliminate vacillation). He will cause you to be rooted, fixed, planted, and make you stable. Strengthen in Greek: , make strong to make mobile, i.e. able to move in a way that achieves something effective. (sthenoō) only occurs in 1 Pet 5:10 of "refusing to be turned away (overpowered).” Established is to be grounded on a solid foundation In this verse, Peter is making closing remarks to churches in Asia Minor. He affirms that the suffering won't last forever, and that God has plans for people in Christ that are eternal and glorious
