What does "this one was born there" mean? Emma Dotter walks through Psalm 87 and shows how the story of Nicodemus in John 3 connects to our passage today. In the Old Testament, Zion is the place where God would meet with his people in the temple. We see in this psalm that Zion carries deep spiritual significance because it represents a people or nation belonging to God. When you move to a new town, it takes a long time to feel like you fit in. Many still feel like outsiders. Psalm 87 depicts outsiders and enemies being welcomed into the city of God. It teaches us that the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is such a sweeping message of welcome, that through it, God is able to make the enemies of Zion feel as though Zion is actually their home town, as though they were born and raised there. And if that's the effect of the gospel, then we ought to welcome others in the same way.

With King David on his death bed, the royal family knows that the time to transfer power is drawing near. David's oldest son, Adonijah, gains support for himself from well-known leaders like Joab and Abiathar, calling Judah together for a feast to celebrate his bid for kingship. Nathan the prophet catches word, and teams up with Bathsheba to alert the king. Later, the Lord appears to King Solomon in a dream, and instead of asking for wealth or long life, he asks the Lord for wisdom to lead God's people.
