Through Christ, we've received the freedom to love others. But what can this look like in our lives today? This week, we unpack practical applications, discuss how the passage hit each of us, and consider what it really means to glorify God in life.

America faces a critical shortage that threatens our future—not just of workers, but of citizens who value productive labor and possess the skills to perform it. Drawing from Jeffrey A. Tucker's analysis, we examine how we've created generations that prefer entertainment consumption over meaningful contribution, and why traditional immigration isn't the solution. At the heart of this crisis lies our misguided educational approach. We keep children in classrooms for far too long, teaching them little of practical value while denying them opportunities to develop real-world skills. When FDR banned child labor in 1936, he unintentionally eliminated critical entry points for teenagers to develop work ethic and practical experience. Today's youth enter adulthood with theoretical knowledge but minimal practical capability. This problem reflects our cultural priorities. We celebrate entertainers, athletes, and social media influencers while overlooking the true heroes—the skilled tradespeople, dedicated parents, and ordinary citizens who faithfully fulfill their responsibilities. Our children inevitably absorb these values, assuming that fame trumps meaningful contribution. Meanwhile, an expansive welfare system has removed the necessity of work for many, creating generations with diminished incentive to develop marketable skills. Most fundamentally, this represents a spiritual crisis. America's greatness has always stemmed from its relationship with God and Jesus Christ—not from material wealth or technological advancement. As John Quincy Adams noted, the "highest glory of the American Revolution" was connecting "in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity." When we sever this connection, we lose the spiritual foundation that gives meaning to work and responsibility. The solution begins with examining our own priorities. What are you giving your time to? Your actions reveal your true values more accurately than your words. As parents, are we modeling productivity and responsibility? As citizens, are we honoring those who contribute meaningfully rather than those who merely entertain? Our national renewal depends on rediscovering the dignity of work, the importance of practical skills, and the spiritual foundation that makes America truly great.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Big Idea: Laying every decision at the throne of King Jesus.1 Corinthians 10:23-33I. Love people more than your personal freedom. 1 Corinthians 10:23-24“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up. No one is to seek his own good, but the good of the other person.II. Listen to the Holy Spirit over your conscience.1 Corinthians 10:25-30Eat everything that is sold in the meat market, without raising questions for the sake of conscience, since the earth is the Lord's, and all that is in it. If any of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat everything that is set before you, without raising questions for the sake of conscience. But if someone says to you, “This is food from a sacrifice,” do not eat it, out of consideration for the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person's. For why is my freedom judged by another person's conscience? If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I criticized because of something for which I give thanks?III. Let others see Jesus through your personal conduct.1 Corinthians 10:31-33So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I also try to please everyone in everything, not seeking my own benefit, but the benefit of many, so that they may be saved.Next Steps: Believe: I want to start my relationship with Jesus today.Become: I will surrender every decision to Jesus this week. Be Sent: I will show love to someone far from Jesus this week.Discussion Questions: What are some everyday choices that your faith influenced this week?Did you make a decision last week that didn't align with your faith? How can you use Scripture to guide your decisions? When dealing with a tough decision, what steps do you take to make sure you don't choose poorly? What boundaries can you set to make better decisions this week? How will you invite Jesus into your decisions this week?Surrender your week to the Holy Spirit.

Big Idea: Will you rise above your family's failures?1 Corinthians 10:1-22I. There are dark moments in every story. 1 Corinthians 10:1-5Now I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless God was not pleased with most of them, since they were struck down in the wilderness.II. Knowing your family history won't change your future.1 Corinthians 10:6-11Now these things took place as examples for us, so that we will not desire evil things as they did. Don't become idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to party. Let us not commit sexual immorality as some of them did, and in a single day twenty-three thousand people died. Let us not test Christ as some of them did and were destroyed by snakes. And don't grumble as some of them did, and were killed by the destroyer. These things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our instruction, on whom the ends of the ages have come.III. Every generation is tempted to turn from Jesus1 Corinthians 10:12-13So, whoever thinks he stands must be careful not to fall. No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it.IV. Today is a chance to change the course for your family.1 Corinthians 10:14-22So then, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I am speaking as to sensible people. Judge for yourselves what I am saying. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, since all of us share the one bread. Consider the people of Israel. Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar? What am I saying then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but I do say that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons! You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share in the Lord's table and the table of demons. Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?Next Steps: Believe: I need Jesus to wash away my sin today.Become: I will flee from temptation this week. Be Sent: I will set an example by my words and actions this week.Discussion Questions: If you could write a book about your family history, what would your title be?Are there any repetitive cycles in your family history?Have you learned a lesson from a family mistake? What is your vision for your family in 20 years? Are you working toward that vision?Since temptation is common in every generation, what can you do to prepare for it? Have you made a mistake that you hope the next generation will avoid?Ask the Holy Spirit for the strength to break a cycle of sin.

Some decisions are simple and sensible, but in the heart of the moment hard to make! This Sunday we're taking a look at 1 Corinthians 10. It is a passage addressing our decision making again. It will help us see why we struggle to let go of freedoms, the danger of that, and where to go with that struggle.

Weighing the Benefits | 1 Corinthians 10:23

Daily Devotions From Greg Laurie

“You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything’—but not everything is good for you. You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything’—but not everything is beneficial.” (1 Corinthians 10:23 NLT) As Christians, we need to avoid anything in life that will hinder our spiritual growth. To help you mature spiritually, here’s a litmus test that will assist you in identifying what might weigh you down in your spiritual walk. The first question to ask yourself is: Does this thing benefit me spiritually? The apostle Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth, “You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything’—but not everything is good for you. You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything’—but not everything is beneficial” (1 Corinthians 10:23 NLT). Certain things are permissible for us to indulge in—that is, they’re not necessarily sinful. But that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily harmless. They can still weigh us down in our walk with Christ by pulling us away from God and His people or by dulling our hunger for God’s Word. Any pastime or hobby—from fishing to hiking to playing in fantasy sports leagues—could fit this description. There’s nothing wrong with them—in moderation. We’re certainly allowed to do them. But if they start to overrun the boundaries of a pastime or hobby, if they begin to occupy an unhealthy amount of our time and attention, we need to adjust our priorities. And that brings us to the second question: Does this thing bring me under its power? Earlier in his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul wrote, “You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything’—but not everything is good for you. And even though ‘I am allowed to do anything,’ I must not become a slave to anything” (1 Corinthians 6:12 NLT). There are a lot of things that can gain power over us: family, friends, significant others, work responsibilities, goals, and aspirations, just to name a few. None of those things are bad in and of themselves. It’s when they start to dominate our priorities and overshadow other areas of our lives that they become dangerous. That’s when we need to take steps to wrest control back from them. As believers, we want to be under the power of Christ and Christ alone. The final question of our litmus test pertains to the gray areas in life—things that aren’t condemned in Scripture, but also aren’t endorsed. When we face these gray areas, we must ask, Do I have an uneasy conscience about what I am doing? To put it scripturally, when these situations arise, remember the words of Paul: “If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning” (Romans 14:23 NLT). The Holy Spirit is your ally in this area. He communicates to you through your conscience. He gives you discernment and wisdom regarding your “life inventory.” He helps you recognize the things that will help you grow in your Christian faith, as well as the things that will hinder you. Wise Christians constantly take inventory of their lives and avoid whatever aspects of life can hurt their spiritual walk. Be wise and take inventory of your walk with God. Reflection question: What’s an example of something that might be permissible for you, but not necessarily beneficial to your spiritual growth? In today's reading, Paul offers a word on faithfulness in the midst of temptation. Referencing the book of Moses which we call Numbers, Paul reminds his hearers that Israel desired evil things rather than God, and thereby received just punishment from the God with whom they had covenanted as a people. When we are tempted, we may feel that we are the only ones who have ever experienced what we are experiencing, but Paul reminds us that no temptation is out of the ordinary. Moreover, with every temptation one might face, God provides a way out so that you may be able to bear it. As such, we should devote ourselves wholeheartedly to the Lord, using our freedom to give God glory, instead of using it as a cover-up for evil. :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Biblefacebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

A Scripture Meditation using Lectio Divina. How to find strength in the midst of temptation. Get your FREE Unshakable Journal here. Temptation is something we all face—sometimes in obvious ways, sometimes in subtle ones. Whether it’s the urge to react in anger, reach for a harmful habit, or rely on ourselves instead of God, the struggle is real. But so is God’s faithfulness. In this Scripture meditation, we’re slowing down with 1 Corinthians 10:12–13, a passage that reminds us we’re not alone in our temptations—and that God always provides a way out. Paul’s words to the Corinthian church are full of warning, yes, but also incredible hope. This is the second episode in Unshakable: Strength for Today, Hope for Tomorrow. Each week, we’re meditating on Scriptures that help us live with strength and confidence in God’s unshakable character. In this meditation on Unshakable in Temptation, you’ll be invited to: Reflect on where you feel most vulnerable to temptation Notice God’s faithfulness and how He provides a way out Examine any pride or self-reliance you may be holding Receive the strength and grace God offers when you struggle Rest in the truth that you are not alone God sees your struggle. He offers you strength, mercy, and a way forward. Whether you’re feeling strong today or weary from the battle, may this time in Scripture renew your hope and anchor you in God’s faithfulness. Take a few deep breaths, open your heart, and let God meet you right where you are. Get your FREE Unshakable Journal here. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
