Psalms in the Summer: Worship & Listen
Caleb Drahosh The call to worship is God's invitation to those who have been made to worship Him. God is the initiator of our worship; we must have the identity of true worshipers which is ours in Christ. The benediction (which means “good word”) is a blessing spoken as the final word by a minister at the end of a worship gathering. It expresses our hope and confidence in God's grace to His people that enables us to walk with Him through whatever we face in this life.

As we continue our sermon series For Every Season, we hear from fellow church member, Dr. Matt Kim, a Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Leadership at Truett Seminary. In Psalm 95, we see a calling on our lives to worship and the how, why, and a warning.PSALM 95:1-111. THE HOW OF WORSHIP: We worship the Lord by coming to Him, by singing, by making a joyful noise, and by coming into His presence with thanksgiving (vs. 1-2).There is nothing complicated about the verb ‘come,' except to say that worship is all encompassing. Worship is personal and participatory at its core, never passive. - Doug Webster,The Psalms: So we have a parallelism here. Look with me to 1B and 2B.1B begins “Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.”2B says “Let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise.” We come so often to God, if we come at all, as beggars. We ask and beg: give me; bless me; help me; guide me; grant me. And that's one necessary level of our existence. But in thanksgiving and adoration we come to God not to ask but to give! We come not whimpering but shouting praise; not in guilt but in gratitude. We feel not distant from God but close to God. We are like a traveler who is home again at last, the prodigal at a banquet. Those moments may be seldom, but when they happen we know that we were created for God. - Don Postema, Space for God 2. The Why of Worship We worship the Lord because He is a great God and there is no other! (vs. 3-7)There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign overall, does not cry, Mine! - Abraham Kuyper,. He [Satan] is a creature striving to be superior to the Creator. . . . Elevation of the Son is a problem for Satan, but bending the knee before God is what he disdains most. . . . Like any creature, Satan owes more to God than gratitude, though grateful recognition of the gift received is all God requires. In failing to give thanks, Satan is injuring God's merit; he is refusing to give God even a fraction of what is due to God. . . . The unquenchable desire to be superior to God holds Satan captive. - Miroslav Volf The Cost of Ambition, 3. The Warning of Worship In every season, worship the worthy Lord, before your heart grows hard, and your praise turns cold (v. 8-11).And I'll praise you in this storm, And I will lift my hands, For you are who you areNo matter where I am, And every tear I've cried, You hold in your hand, You never left my side, And though my heart is torn, I will praise you in this storm. - Praise You in This Storm, Casting Crowns

Reverend Kyu Hahn returns to Curious Psalms, joining Matt for a conversation on Psalm 95. Together, they reflect on how this Psalm invites us into postures (both spiritual and physical) that help us remember God's faithfulness with joy and reverence. They also explore the Psalm's call to examine our own hearts, and the challenging theme of God's anger. Plus, listen for a personal story about Kyu dismantling his bedframe!
Let Us Sing Songs of Praise95.1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!3 For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.Today, if you hear his voice,8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,9 when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.”11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”

Why do you worship God and for what do you praise Him?One of the primary reasons given throughout Scripture for which we are to worship and praise God is that He is our Maker -- our Creator. But do you believe that? Our schools teach we simply got here by evolution -- a natural process that doesn't require God. What's the truth? Midland Evangelical Free Church Sermon Audio Midland, MI
The psalmist begins by inviting us as a community to sing to our God in humble worship. For He is the rock of our salvation, the One who has formed this earth, the One who made us and takes care of us. And then the psalmist reminds us of the choice before us – to enter God's rest or harden our hearts towards Him. Those referenced in this psalm saw God's work, they were given reason to trust Him, and yet because of their unbelief they did not enter the rest of the Promised land. The author of Hebrews gives us additional understanding of the connection between a heart's worship, entering the Lord's rest, and the warning against unbelief. (See Hebrews 3-4) If we are thinking people, we have to ask, what does it mean to enter the Lord's rest with a heart of worship in the midst of our grief and heartache? We know that things are not as they should be with the brokenness of this world, the sins in our own hearts, and the temptations towards unbelief. The answer is found in the gospel – in Jesus who has overcome, and who carries us through. We can rest in the hope of His promise and the truth of His nearness. He will not leave us or forsake us. Let us worship Him as the source of our comfort and our joy, and find rest in His sufficiency. Prepare for this week's teaching by reading Psalm 95 with Hebrews 3-4
God is worthy of praise, and he is to be praised both now and evermore. We must praise him with a devoted heart and beware of a hard one. We are not to harden our hearts before God. Rather, let us bend the knee to him and thank him for his goodness to us.

In our last episode, Ahab struck a deal with Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram instead of destroying him, but because the Lord had set him apart for destruction, an unnamed prophet pronounces judgment on Ahab. Some time passes, and Ahab sets his sights on a field that belongs to another man. After he refuses to sell it, Ahab pouts in his room until Jezebel hatches a scheme to murder him and take his land. Elijah appears to prophecy his demise, and remarkably, Ahab responds with humility. Later, the prophet Micaiah shares a vision of the Lord's throne room where God permits a lying spirit to bring about Ahab's demise. 1 Kings 21 – 1:07 . 1 Kings 22 – 7:42 . If you asked anyone, "What do you worship?" they'd probably give you one of two answers: "God (or a divine being)" or "nothing." Most people don't realize our lives are full of worship. While we may not physically bow down, our choices show our worship. When I do something for myself, I am bowing to myself in worship. Instead, Psalm 95 invites us to worship the Lord as King, Maker, and Shepherd.
What is the proper response to God?
This week, Pastor Matt Ullrich guides us in prayer through Psalm 95 and unpacks how worship is supposed to impact our head, heart, and hands.
