The Lord Our God Is Holy99.1 The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!2 The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.3 Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!4 The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity;you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.5 Exalt the Lord our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the Lord, and he answered them.7 In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them.8 O Lord our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.9 Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy!

The LORD reigns as the transcendent King over all the earth and all the nations, yet He comes near to His people as He rules from the place where He has promised to dwell. The peoples are called to praise Him for His just and righteous rule. He is the holy God who intends for His holiness to bless us. Moses, Aaron, and Samuel all experienced the blessing of God's holiness as they called upon Him, and He answered with His forgiveness. Because of the forgiveness of our King, Jesus Christ, we call upon God and know that He will answer in His holiness for our blessing. Rev. Nate Hill, pastor at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Winchester, TX, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 99. To learn more about St. Michael's Lutheran, visit www.stmichaelswinchester.org. Join Sharper Iron this summer to study selected Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

"Holiness" can seem distant to us. We know God is holy, but how does it impact daily life? Psalm 99 shows the connection. It praises God for being holy, or "set apart." He's unique, higher than all beings. While we often rightly relate sinlessness with "holy", Psalm 99 points out that God is holy in greatness, justice, and forgiveness. He's set apart from all others. So, He deserves our praise.

Psalm 99 | Our Holy God | Jon Deedrick
On today's episode, an Aramean army commander comes to Elisha to be healed, but when Elisha doesn't give him the respect he thinks he deserves, he almost rejects the offer out of hand. Later, the Arameans try to capture Elisha but he diffuses them with hospitality. Not long after, the Arameans lay siege to Israel, surrounding Samaria in order to cause a famine, and the people take desperate measures. The king of Israel becomes enraged and sends for Elisha that he might kill him. When the messenger arrives, Elisha declares that a miraculous turn of events is just a day away.2 Kings 5 - 1:22 . 2 Kings 6 - 9:12 . 2 Kings 7 - 17:03 . In today's readings, we'll cover some of David's military exploits. As he and his forces are victorious over their enemies, the reader is to understand that the Lord is with him in battle. The narrative thus far has established that David prioritizes the right worship of God. Much like the gospel accounts, we'll read parallel narratives when we read portions from 2 Samuel and from 1 Chronicles, so don't be alarmed or feel like you're experiencing déjà vu. One section that's unique to 2 Samuel is a recording of David's kindness to a handicapped man named Mephibosheth; he was last remaining relative of Saul's family, the son of his friend Jonathan.2 Samuel 8 - 1:06 . 2 Samuel 9 - 4:18 . 2 Samuel 10 - 8:22 . 1 Chronicles 18 - 14:39 . 1 Chronicles 19 - 15:29 .
