Pastor Taylor BradburyJesus is king forever… even when it seems he is not.
Over the summer we will be looking at selected Psalms in our ‘Psalms for the Summer' series - this week one of our elders, Martin Reynolds, is preaching on Psalm 89 - Praise God Forever!
Psalm 89 carries us into the mystery of living between praise and lament. The psalmist begins with six reminders of God's steadfast love, His promises to David, His power over evil, and His faithfulness across generations. Yet, with brutal honesty, he turns to complaint, asking how God's covenant love can coexist with exile, defeat, and humiliation. The sermon highlights that two things can be true: God is good and yet life can be unbearably painful. Like Ethan the Ezraite, we are invited to bring our rawest questions before God, not with neat answers but with honest cries of “How long?” and “Remember me.” The psalm ends in silence, but the fuller story points us to Christ, God's love embodied, mocked and scorned for our sake, yet faithful to the end. In Him we find not easy resolutions, but a Savior who enters the tension with us, carrying both our praise and our pain into the presence of God.

Psalm 89 and Proverbs 30: LORD, Remember How Short My Time Is by Shawn Ozbun
Psalm 89 begins by praying to the LORD as the incomparable Creator of all things. He stills the mightiest forces in all creation by His mighty hand, and His people are blessed. That blessedness is seen especially in the LORD's steadfast promises to David and his son. Yet the people of God lament that the line of David seems to have withered under God's judgment, and so they pray that the LORD would remember His steadfast love and bring an end to the mockery of His anointed one. Through the promises spoken by the LORD in this psalm, the coming of Jesus Christ as the Son of David is foretold. Rev. Mark Squire, pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 89. To learn more about Immanuel Lutheran, visit www.immanuelsta.org. Join Sharper Iron this summer to study selected Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Hard times come—personally, nationally, even globally—and sometimes they shake the very things we hold most dear. In this powerful message from Psalm 89, Pastor Israel Martin shares how to navigate seasons of deep crisis with honesty, hope, and trust. Drawing from his own experiences growing up in Cuba and from the stories of others who've walked through hardship, he reminds us that even when everything feels uncertain, God is still on His throne. His love and faithfulness haven't changed, and His plan is still unfolding. Discover how God's presence can sustain you—even when the questions feel bigger than the answers. (06/29/2025)
This chapter highlights the promise God made to David and the Psalmist wondering if God was faithful to keep His promises.

In our last episode, King Saul's jealousy and hatred for David began to grow as David successfully conquered the Philistines in battle time after time. Saul began plotting David's demise, but his plans to see him killed were all foiled. Today, Saul's rage becomes clear to everyone. Saul instructs his son Jonathan and all of his men to kill David. Jonathan and David are close companions, however, and Jonathan helps David escape from the king. As he runs away unarmed and unprepared, he visits Ahimelech at Nob and loads up on supplies including the consecrated bread of the presence and the sword of Goliath, which had been kept there until that time. 1 Samuel 19 - 1:02 . 1 Samuel 20 - 5:54 . 1 Samuel 21 - 14:58 .
