Because our God is unchangeable, his past performance and faithfulness is the guarantee of future results. We can have hope that leads to cycles of remembrance, request, and rest because of our certainty in his future faithfulness.
In this episode of Sunday Talks, Dr. Larry White breaks down Psalm 85.
Pray for restoration based on what God has done in the past. (v. 1-3)Pray for restoration based on God's present Grace and Love. (v. 4-7)Pray for restoration based on future promise. (v. 8-13)
Depicting a vision for what this world could be, this Psalm, set to the Scottish tune ‘Lovely Molly,' imagines love and mercy (or truth or faithfulness, in other translations), justice and peace coming together to greet and kiss. This rendition of the Psalm continues to unfold that vision of the future as one in which God's goodness and kindness are evident, healing takes place, and the people will sing.Continue your reflections with the accompanying journal, which includes further questions for reflection and some invitations to prayer and practice.Paid subscribers receive a free journal PDF, or you can purchase a paperback versionVisit the Celtic Psalms website for scores/books, mp3s, CDs, and videos for Love and Mercy Find out more about the Habits for the Spirit course: an 8-week online course exploring habits and daily spiritual practices to promote wellbeing in body, mind, and spiritFollow Kiran's monthly reflections on Bless My FeetPsalms for the Spirit is a reader-supported publication. This is a Psalm about repentance and that it is beautifully wrapped up in a robust understanding of who God is and what He has done in saving us and bringing us to Himself in the first place! Passage: 8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly. 9 Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land. 10 Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. 11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. (Psalm 85:8–11 ESV) Song: Your Will Be Done by Jonny Robinson and Rich Thompson Lyrics: Your will be done my God and Father As in heaven so on earth My heart is drawn to self-exalting Help me seek Your kingdom first As Jesus walked so shall I walk Held by Your same unchanging love Be still my soul O lift your voice and pray Father not my will but Yours be done How in that garden he persisted I may never fully know The fearful weight of true obedience It was held by him alone What wondrous faith to bear that cross To bear my sin what wondrous love My hope was sure when there my Saviour prayed Father not my will but Yours be done When I am lost when I am broken In the night of fear and doubt Still I will trust in my good Father Yes to one great King I bow As Jesus rose so I shall rise In ransomed glory at the throne My heart restored with all Your saints I sing Father not my will but Yours be done As we go forth our God and Father Lead us daily in the fight That all the world might see Your glory And Your Name be lifted high And in this Name we overcome For You shall see us safely home Now as Your church we lift our voice and pray Father not my will but Yours be done And in this Name we overcome For You shall see us safely home Now as Your church we lift our voice and pray Father not my will but Yours be done Father not my will but Yours be done Father not my will but Yours be done Prayer: You, Lord, have become my hope, my comfort, my strength, my all! In you does my soul rejoice. The darkness vanished from before my eyes, and I beheld you, the sun of righteousness. When I loved darkness, I knew you not, but wandered on from night to night. But you led me out of that blindness; you took me by the hand and called me to yourself, and now I can thank you, and your mighty voice which has penetrated to my inmost heart. Amen. -Augustine

Have you ever heard a Christian say something like, “Who God is shapes what I do?” This is one of those “almost-truths” that sounds great at face value, but it's missing a key step in the middle. Psalm 85 will fill in the middle piece we desperately need when learning to trust God: “Who God is shapes _ shapes what I do.”

Verse 1 lets us know this Psalm comes after the time of captivity when the Jews were allowed to return to Israel.Far better for the people is to have their sins ______________________ and atoned for, reminding us of David's words in Psalm 32. 2 Corinthians 5:21 John 3:36Prayer to God for _______________________ among the people of the land V. 4-7The last thing the people who returned post-exile needed to do was take God for granted, return to sinning against God and bring ______________________ judgment on themselves and their fellow Israelites. 1 John 1:9How many prayerful questions does the Psalmist ask in verses 5-6?__________________. These are of course rhetorical questions as much for the people as for God.
