Daily Dose of Hope December 24, 2025 Scripture – Acts 23 Prayer: Loving God, As we come before you on this Christmas Eve, we thank you for the love that binds us together. Bless each member of our church family and fill our homes with warmth and joy. For those who are alone, please give them peace and comfort that only you can give. For those who are dealing with struggle and difficulty, Lord, give them peace. Remind them that you are there to guide, lead, and provide strength. And continue to speak to us, Lord Jesus, as we make our way through your Word. We need to hear from you, Emmanuel – God with us. More of you and less of me. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church daily Bible reading. We have been on a journey, reading through the Gospels and the book of Acts. Today, we walk through Acts 23. Early on in this chapter, we find Paul speaking before the high council and things aren't going well. He gets slapped by the high priest and there is violent disagreement on the council how to deal with him. The discord is so bad that Paul actually has to leave the location. Paul's fate seems uncertain at best. And then, when all seems lost, God speaks clearly to Paul, telling him to be encouraged, for this would not be the end; he would carry the message of the Gospel all the way to Rome! I read this chapter and it immediately brought to mind what Paul himself writes to the Romans in 8:28, "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Paul has been through so much at this point, including fear, extreme discomfort, and physical pain. He probably thought Jerusalem was going to be the end for him and he was at peace with that. But God had something else in mind. God wanted to use Paul's bold witness to bring the Gospel further, to higher levels of government, so that more could believe. What seems like desperate times to humans, God can redeem for his own purposes. What has God redeemed in your life? I know that in the midst of dire circumstances, it is often difficult to see God at work. But later, when we have perspective, we can see how God took what was dark and ugly and brought something good from it. I should say that bringing something good out of a painful situation doesn't mean fixing it for us but rather demonstrating his glory. This is sometimes hard for us to wrap our human brains around. I think it takes lots of prayer and lots of trust. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Acts 23 tells of Paul before the Sanhedrin. In a similar way to when our Lord Jesus Christ appears before them, the hearing commences with an illegality from the High Priest, Ananias. That corrupt priest commands that the Apostle be smitten on the cheek - this is contrary to the Law of Moses. Paul reacts to this violation by saying that God would in His time smite the high priest. For this answer Paul is rebuked by those of the Council. The Apostle says he had not recognised the high priest. This seems unusual as in Acts 9 this high priest had given letters to Paul authorising the persecution at Damascus. Some such as Ramsay have suggested Paul's eyesight was poor, due to malaria possibly contracted on his first missionary journey. Others suggest that this is in fact a rebuttal of the high priest's right to hold that office. Paul undoubtedly had poor eyesight as many of his letters attest e.g. Galatians 6verses11. The Apostle sees the impossibility of him getting a fair trial and so he divides the Council on the question of the teaching of the Scriptures regarding the raising of the dead. Verse 8 tells us of the difference in teaching between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Verse 10 informs us that the disagreement became violent. Paul is once again rescued. Paul's sister's son learns of a plot to assassinate Paul and informs the chief captain. The chief captain immediately responds by sending Paul to Felix the Roman Governor in Caesarea with a heavily armed escort - a journey of two days. This heavily armed company carry with them a letter explaining why the Chief Captain has taken these measures. Chapter 24 speaks of Paul before Felix and of the flattering orator the Jews hired to prosecute the Apostle. The Apostle defends each charge magnificently. Paul points out that he came to Jerusalem for worship and to bring charitable gifts for his nation. The aged Apostle also is a Pharisee. The Pharisaic teachings were an allowable teaching among the Jews. Felix finds himself in a difficult place having some understanding of the teachings of the Way (an early name for believers in Christ Jesus). Felix detains Paul not wanting to fall out of favour with the Jews. Paul is provided with protection and liberty. Having heard of Paul's bringing charity to his fellow Jews Felix hopes to secure a bribe. Felix becomes very disturbed knowing that since he understands the reality of the coming judgment and that he would be subject to the judgment of God. Felix's life makes it certain that he will be rejected when that judgment comes. After two years Rome replaces Governor Felix with Governor Festus. Festus maintains Paul's imprisonment to please the Jews.
Acts to the Future: How to Survive Chaos (Acts 23) by Lifehouse
In difficult times and through the trials of life, it can be hard to recognize God's providence at work in and around us. In his sermon “Holy Interference,” drawn from Acts 23:12–35, Alex reminds us that God was sovereignly working through ordinary people to bring about an extraordinary turn of events in Paul's life, even amid persecution and imprisonment. In the same way, God continues to work through the everyday moments and people in our lives to accomplish His purposes and fulfill His sovereign plan throughout the earth. How might God be moving “behind the scenes” in your life today?
The Jews had caused a riot when they heard Paul speak about his own story and Jesus calling him to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. God is using these circumstances to guide him as he presents the gospel higher and higher from the despised gentiles to the Roman Government leaders. Jesus turns every trial into a testimony and every hardship into a higher opportunity for the gospel.
An age of safetyism? Trial # 2: Before the Sanhedrin (22:30) Where does Paul get his courage? A good conscience (23:1) The word of God (23:2-5) The hope of the resurrection of the dead (23:6-10) The plan of the Lord who is near (23:11) Paul's courage is well founded: The Lord continues to work out his plan despite murderous plots (23:12-15) through a young man's quick thinking (23:16-22) using the powers of this world (23:23-35) Take courage!
The following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome." - Acts 23:11

Living for God's glory means letting His character shape every corner of your life—work done with integrity, conversations seasoned with grace, resources stewarded generously, and decisions guided by prayer. It's choosing obedience over convenience, service over spotlight, and patience over pressure. Celebrate others, confess quickly, forgive freely, and pursue excellence as worship. And in today's message, Pastor Mark will encourage you to resolve to begin where you are: one wholehearted yes at a time, so ordinary moments become a bright reflection of God's holy character in you.
Setbacks feel like dead ends, but in God's hands, they become construction zones for His purpose. Delays deepen dependence, detours reveal gifts, and disappointments refine motives. He weaves lessons into compassion for others, credibility into your story, and resilience into your faith. What might've looked like a loss becomes a launchpad for God's glory and others' good. And in today's message, Pastor Mark will remind you to bring God every closed door and unanswered prayer—You can ask God to open your eyes to the opportunities that He wants to put before you!
In days that seem brutally human, there is no circumstance beyond God's plan, and He will see you to the right destination.
