The Talks crew continues the discussion on Abraham, moving into Romans chapters 3 and 4. Recorded on February 26, 2025.
This week Paul offered Father Abraham as an example of how to obtain righteousness with God—through Christ by faith alone. We learned that Abraham's faith was counted to him as righteousness BEFORE he was circumcised. God made a promise to and covenant with Abraham to redeem the world—both the circumcised AND the uncircumcised—and it would be carried out by Abraham believing God and his promises, not by his own keeping the law. When we are under grace, believing God, then our sin is forgiven and our faith is counted to us as righteousness. Abraham's faith was/is the model and the pointer to God's plan for his people.

Often times when we look to faithful men and women of God who have gone before us, we judge their salvation by what we can see, the fruit in their lives. This was true of Jews with Abraham as well. But Paul tells us that even Abraham, the father of Judaism, was justified by faith alone. True faith. Faith that is fully convinced God is the One True God, that God is true to His Word, and thus surrendered to Him in all of life.
Main idea: Righteousness only comes to us through faith. (1) Righteousness is received apart from circumcision (2) Righteousness has a sign and seal in circumcision (3) Righteousness is given with or without circumcision Discussion Questions: 1. What does the delay between Abraham's justification and his circumcision teach us about the role of works in salvation? 2. In what ways do modern believers sometimes fall into the same mindset as those who thought circumcision contributed to salvation? 3. How do sacraments like baptism and communion function as signs and seals today? In what ways are they similar to and different from circumcision in the Old Testament? 4. What are some ways that faith is like walking? How does this metaphor help us understand the Christian life?

Preacher: Jeremiah Fyffe Romans 4:16-17 Romans 4:16-17 | Faith, Grace, Guaranteed from CrossPointe Coast on Vimeo. FAITH SAYS: I BELIEVE GOD WILL DO IT FAITH SAYS: I BELIEVE I CANNOT DO IT FAITH SAYS: I BELIEVE GOD WILL SURELY DO IT BECAUSE GOD ALONE IS ABLE Genesis 15:5–6 (ESV) And [the Lord] brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And [Abraham] believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Romans 4:4–5 (ESV) Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, Hebrews 1:1–3 (ESV) Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son …. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, Romans 11:6 (ESV) But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. Hebrews 11:1 (ESV) Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 Corinthians 5:6–9 (ESV) So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Ephesians 3:20–21 (ESV) Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Faith is believing God will do what He has promised. Teacher - Scott Kenworthy
Main idea: We are made right with God through faith. 1. Was Abraham good enough to be saved by his works? 2. Was David too bad not to be saved because of his works? Discussion Questions 1. What does it mean that faith was "credited" to Abraham as righteousness? How does this apply to believers today? 2. Why do some people struggle with the idea of justification by faith alone? What are some common misconceptions? 3. How does Psalm 32 describe the experience of unconfessed sin? Have you ever felt the weight of sin in your own life? 4. Why is confession necessary for experiencing the blessing of forgiveness?

FAITH ALONE — Romans 4:9-10 THE SIGN AND SEAL — Romans 4:11 THE WALK OF FAITH — Romans 4:12 Jeremiah 17:9–10 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” Genesis 15:5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Thomas Hooker That whosoever is the son of Abraham, hath faith, and whosoever hath faith is a walker, is a marker; by the footsteps of faith you may see where faith hath been. Romans 3:28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Romans 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Romans 4:5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, Romans 4:9 Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 1689 London Baptist Confession Baptism is an ordinance of the New Testament, ordained by Jesus Christ. To those baptized it is a sign of their fellowship with Him in His death and resurrection, of their being grafted into Him, of remission of sins, and of submitting themselves to God through Jesus Christ to live and walk in newness of life.

The promise of Christ makes us unwavering witnesses. In this message, Pastor Mark explores the example of Abraham to see how God's promise given to Abraham motivates us to bring the gospel to the nations and encourages us to grow unwavering in our faith as we make him known. Preached on Romans 4:9-25 on 1/29/25.
Preacher: Jeremiah Fyffe Romans 4:6-8 Romans 4:6-8 | Blessed Faith from CrossPointe Coast on Vimeo. Romans 3:21-4:25 — FAITH ALONE JUST AS DAVID THE BURDEN OF SIN & THE BLESSING OF GRACE THE PRACTICAL JOY OF JUSTIFICATION Sanctification springs from the soil of justification, and from no other ground. Faith is complete dependence upon the righteousness of God revealed in the perfect work of Jesus on our behalf. Romans 1:16–17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Dwight L. Moody The greatest enemy that ever crossed my path was D.L. Moody. Our enemies are within. Romans 8:2–4 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Hebrews 7:25 … to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Philippians 3:8–9 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
