Leave a Review to help our audience grow!--June 7, 2026 -- Pr. Kevin Kritzer -- "It's Absolutely Certain!" -- Romans 4:13-2513 So it was not by obeying the laws in Moses' Teachings that Abraham or his descendants received the promise that he would inherit the world. Rather, he received this promise through God's approval that comes by faith. 14 If those who obey Moses' Teachings are the heirs, then faith is useless and the promise is worthless. 15 The laws in Moses' Teachings bring about anger. But where those laws don't exist, they can't be broken. 16 Therefore, the promise is based on faith so that it can be a gift.[a] Consequently, the promise is guaranteed for every descendant, not only for those who are descendants by obeying Moses' Teachings but also for those who are descendants by believing as Abraham did. He is the father of all of us, 17 as Scripture says: “I have made you a father of many nations.” Abraham believed when he stood in the presence of the God who gives life to dead people and calls into existence things that don't even exist. 18 When there was nothing left to hope for, Abraham still hoped and believed. As a result, he became a father of many nations, as he had been told: “That is how many descendants you will have.” 19 Abraham didn't weaken. Through faith he regarded the facts: His body was already as good as dead now that he was about a hundred years old, and Sarah was unable to have children. 20 He didn't doubt God's promise out of a lack of faith. Instead, giving honor to God for the promise he became strong because of faith 21 and was absolutely confident that God would do what he promised. 22 That is why Abraham's faith was regarded as the basis of his approval by God. 23 But the words “his faith was regarded as the basis of his approval by God” were written not only for him 24 but also for us. Our faith will be regarded as the basis of our approval by God—each of us who believe in the one who brought Jesus, our Lord, back to life. 25 Jesus, our Lord, was handed over to death because of our failures and was brought back to life so that we could receive God's approval.http://www.bethanylutheran.orghttp://www.facebook.com/Bethany.Long.Beachwww.youtube.com/c/BethanyLutheranLongBeach

Blessed is the man...who believes!
Abraham is Paul's test case. Was he justified by works? No. Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Paul makes sure you notice the timeline: the faith came before circumcision, not after. Circumcision was a seal of a righteousness Abraham already had by faith. That matters because it means the promise belongs to everyone who shares Abraham's faith, Jew and Gentile alike. God justifies the ungodly. The Rev. Joshua Heimbuck, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Ashland, OR, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Romans 4:1–25. To learn more about Grace Lutheran, visit gracelutheranashland.org. Why does doing the right thing sometimes feel impossible? Why do feelings of guilt follow us even when we've been forgiven? These aren't new questions. St. Paul wrote his letter to the Romans for a church he had never visited, and yet he addressed the struggles every Christian knows firsthand: the weight of the law, the persistence of sin, the sufficiency of what God has done in Christ. Romans covers enormous ground. Paul moves from the universal problem of sin through justification by faith, the role of baptism, the war between flesh and spirit, God's faithfulness to Israel, and the shape of life together in the body of Christ. There's a reason the Reformation was born in this letter. Join us on Thy Strong Word as we open up Romans, weekdays at 11am or on-demand anytime, at KFUO.org. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. What does the Scripture say?
Romans Vol. 1 - Coming Under Grace People naturally assume salvation works like Santa's list: if we're good enough, God will reward us, but Paul shows in Romans 4 that righteousness has never come through morality, law, or human effort. Instead, salvation is a gift of grace received through faith alone in Christ alone, giving believers the assurance that God's promise depends on His faithfulness, not their performance. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible for May 23rd. On today's episode, Speaker A guides us through a thoughtful journey in the Scriptures, reading from 2 Chronicles 6-7, Psalm 135, and Romans 4. We'll witness Solomon's heartfelt prayer at the dedication of the temple, marvel at God's faithfulness celebrated in the Psalms, and reflect on Paul's powerful message about righteousness by faith. As always, Speaker A encourages us to embrace God's unconditional love, find strength in prayer, and share kindness in our daily lives. Join us as we open our hearts to encounter the God who is love and seek to walk one step at a time in the light of His presence. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Abraham was fully convinced of God's ability to do whatever he promised. He trusted that God loved him before and beyond anything he could have done for God. In other words, God's love comes to us first. His love is not conditioned on our belief. His love emerges from who he is, his character, his very being. It's not based on my character and who I am. The full import of God's unconditional love is seen in the life of our Lord Jesus, the one who has offered himself on behalf of the entire world, his life, his death, his resurrection, declare that we are loved by God. Abraham was convinced of God's unconditional love. But that conviction didn't happen overnight. It didn't just arrive all at once without reservation. No, Abraham's conviction was learned. He was convinced as he walked with God one step after another. And these steps led him into a deeper and deeper conviction that God is good and that his love for us is faithful even when we are unfaithful. God's love for us is not dependent on our performance. It's based and rooted in his very heart, in who he is. And who he is is seen perfectly in the face of Jesus. So let's do what Abraham did and grow in our conviction, one step at a time, one day at a time, opening our hearts to the reality of God's goodness. Perhaps daring to believe today more than you did yesterday, that God's love for you is unconditioned and it's rooted in his heart. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Romans 4 describes the connection between the faith of Abraham and the faith of all of God's people. Just as Abraham believed God and it was counted as righteousness, so it is with us. Adam Cawrse walks us through this critical doctrine.
The God who kept His promises to Abraham is the same God who faithfully saves all those who place their faith in His Son and who will keep each and every promise He has made to them as well.

Abraham Justified by Faith 4 What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wages are […]

The Apostle Paul has laid out the heart of the gospel message, which is that we are justified before God not on the basis of our works, but on the basis of what Jesus has done. But how do we receive such righteousness? We receive Christ's righteousness by faith, and by faith alone. In this passage, Paul brings up the example of Abraham to show that God has always justified on the basis of faith alone. The outlook of such justifying faith is trusting God to do what we can't do for ourselves, and the outworking of such justifying faith is faithfully doing what God has called us to do. As such, we are invited to trust in Jesus for our justification and to faithfully follow after him.

Romans Vol. 1 - Coming Under Grace Abraham's life shows us that the Bible is ultimately about God's grace, not simply moral lessons about better behavior. Yet Abraham still serves as an example of obedient faith, trusting God's promises even when they seemed impossible. In Romans chapter 4, Paul points to Abraham as the clearest example of what it means to be justified by faith. Abraham was not counted righteous because of works, circumcision, or law-keeping—but because he believed God.This lesson explores how grace and faith work together in salvation. Paul shows that salvation has never been about earning God's favor through perfect performance, but about trusting in God's promises and responding in faithful obedience.Using Abraham and Sarah's story in Genesis 17–21, we see that nothing is impossible with God. Abraham trusted God even when the promise seemed impossible, and that faith was counted to him as righteousness. We also examine the relationship between Romans 4 and James 2—faith and works are not in conflict. Grace reaches down, faith reaches up, and works follow as the result of genuine trust in God.If you've ever struggled with anxiety about salvation, wondered whether you're doing “enough,” or questioned how grace and obedience fit together, this study will help bring clarity and assurance.

Romans Vol. 1 - Coming Under Grace People resist the truth of salvation by grace because they want to claim some credit, but Paul shows that Abraham was counted righteous by faith long before circumcision. Circumcision, like baptism and the Lord's Supper, does not save but points to Christ and confirms that all who believe are justified by faith alone. For many, the word “faith” sounds foolish. We hear this in phrases like “blind faith” or “taking a leap of faith.” But our faith as Christians is far from foolish because of Who our faith is in: the Promise-Keeping God of the Universe. The Bible says, “The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (2 Chron. 16:19). God is always searching for opportunities to strengthen those who trust not in themselves but in Him.Take-Home Message: Don't have faith in yourself.Have faith in God by surrendering to His righteousness (13-15).Surrendering My Self-Righteousness:PrayerlessnessPerfectionismPharisaismHave faith in God by hoping in His promises (16-22).Have faith in God by depending on His power (23-25).
Send us Fan MailRomans 4:13–25: Abraham's Faith, God's Promise, and Resurrection Ken Corkins and pastor Rocky Ellison continue Season 18, Episode 10 of “Pondering the Bible,” finishing Romans 4:13–25 (RSV) on salvation by grace through faith using Abraham as Paul's key example. They explain that God's promise to Abraham came long before the law, so it could not be earned by law-keeping; they contrast conditional promises with God's one-sided promise in Genesis to bless Abraham and make him a blessing to all nations, including Gentiles. They discuss Paul's link between Abraham's “against hope” belief—despite Abraham and Sarah being reproductively “dead” and the command to sacrifice Isaac—and faith in God who raises the dead. Rocky connects this to Christian belief in Jesus' resurrection and to personal hardship strengthening faith, concluding that Jesus' death and resurrection bring justification for sinners. 00:00 Welcome and Setup 00:44 Reading Romans Passage 02:41 Abraham Faith Recap 03:47 Promise Not Law 04:23 Grace Promise Explained 06:47 Who Inherits the World 09:49 Faith and Resurrection 14:53 Hardship Strengthens Faith 18:27 Reckoned as Righteousness 21:09 Chapter Four Wrap Up 22:47 Closing and FarewellNEW!: Rate us at Podchaser Find us at www.pondergmc.org.
