Frozen sand, cold blue skies, and a low tide greeted us at Perranporth as we stepped out to film this episode. Bundled up in layers, and weighed down with cameras, we followed the stream of chattering bluetits across the sands towards Chapel Rock. It was a special December morning - and the perfect start for this project. In this episode, we talk to Sarah Walsh, a cold water swimmer, swim coach, and founder of the Perranporth bluetits. After a freezing dip in the ocean, from The Chair Sarah speaks about cold water, mental health, faith and the power of community. RAPPO & DEACS FRIDAY FIX 17 May 2019 Welcome to the 24th episode. The last one! We’re still in the Cup Final period of the season and so understandably there’s a review of last Saturday’s SWPL League Cup Final, as well as a mention for Sunday’s Duchy League final which features St Mawgan and Foxhole clashing again. St Mawgan’s manager Ash Bicknall is back on to give us his thoughts while Lee Denton also tells how he happens to be back at Perranporth and looking to seal his second Combo league title in two seasons for the club! Falmouth Town’s Young Player of the Season, Martyn Duff, explains how he feels his playing role is at the club and we finish the season with our regular SWPL contributor, secretary Phil Hiscox, giving his thoughts on the league’s season. Many thanks to Phil for his weekly contribution. We sum up how much we have in the kitty after our weekly “Bet of the Week” slot, and of course there’s the final result for the Predictions we made every week! Rappo also shares his last Combo review of the season. As this is the last episode, thanks to everyone who has contributed over the 24 weeks. You have been so helpful in having a chat about the local game. It’s made some great listening and I hope you have enjoyed what we have tried to do. It’s been fun talking about Cornish football! Time certainly goes quickly when we’re having fun producing them! We got more interviews than ever this time around and with some icons of Cornish football from the past couple decades as well. It’s great that we can get to hear their thoughts, and even better that we can share them with our listeners. So amidst the interviews there’s the usual features such as Rappo’s “Bet of the Week” and our Predictions on a handful of games throughout the Saturday football programme, from SWPL through to Duchy and Trelawny. We keep in touch with our resident Truro City supporters, just Cam this week, as well as the SWPL secretary Phil Hiscox. While Rappo takes his regular look at the Cornwall Combination League scene, we hear from County Youth coach Alan Yendall who shares the enjoyment and satisfaction in the knowledge that the county is producing some fine footballers. We have a chat with the Perranporth football and cricket clubs who are staging a charity game soon in memory of Peter Batchelor who was connected with both clubs, while Gary Williams outlines the Torpoint season to us. Finally, who’s left – oh of course, two big names in Cornish football, none other than Darren Gilbert and Alan Carey. Once again, thanks for listening and please feel free to contact me – davedeacon@cornishsoccer.info with feedback, comments and suggestions for future episodes. It’s around 90 minutes of fun talking about Cornish football with some of the people who are making sure Saturday continues to be our football day. February 25, 2014. Perranporth, England. The nude body of an unidentified male is discovered after washing up on Perranporth Beach. The victim has a sock stuffed in his mouth, which has been tied in place by headphones. He is soon identified as Alan Jeal, a 64-year old loner from the town of Wadebridge. Investigators use CCTV footage to track Alan’s movements on the night before he was found and learn that he travelled to two other nearby towns before he went to Perranporth. The footage opens up a lot of perplexing questions, but no answers about how Alan wound up dead. Did Alan commit a very bizarre suicide or was he a victim of foul play? We look at both angles on this week’s minisode of “The Trail Went Cold”. Special thanks to Casper for supporting our podcast. Surf and Music Gig raise money for Cornish Foundation The ETL international longboard competition was held for the second year running at Watergate Bay, the two star event on the tour was headlined by O’Neill and organized by local surfer Ben “Skindog” Skinner who has just returned from Ireland with the European title. The final saw a UK head to head with O’Neill team riders Skindog and Adam Griffiths battling it out in a close heat which saw Adam taking his first ETL win. Ben Skinner said “It’s been a great weekend although the conditions of the surf have been tough, all the sponsors of the event have done an amazing job and we have once again put on a great showcase for British surfing”. Ben skinner who is one of the ambassadors for the Joe Way Appeal which has raised £93,000.00 for 20 charities in the 3 years since Joe passed away also put together another Joe Way Appeal fundraising event to the weekend of surfing. The Phoenix Pub at Watergate hosted this years event and the line up was the best of Cornish music which saw Charlie Wingfield, Grey dog and Ben Sutcliff show the European visitors how vibrant the music and surf scene is in the UK. The money this year is being donated from Joe’s Appeal to the Matt Upsher foundation which was set up after the well know teacher and musician from Perranporth tragically died last year whilst surfing His Brother Tom spoke about his brother and introduced Grey Dog which is the Band his brother played with, Tom said "My brother had a soul that reached out to so many people, his passion and enthusiasm was infectious, and it is this spirit we hope to continue, with the work of the Matthew Upsher Foundation. We are delighted to have been invited to work with The Joy Way appeal, and are extremely thankful that the Foundation is the chosen beneficiary of tonight’s event. Its great to have the support of The Joe Way appeal, Ben Skinner and all of the people that have worked so hard to put together such a great event. It gives us all such a sense of positivity that we can come together and raise the awareness of the Foundation." Ben added “Matt taught me how to play the guitar and was a real soul surfer he is deeply missed so to be able to donate some money to his foundation is a real honour”. £1145.00 was raised with an auction and prize draw that saw great prizes from O’Neill Clothing and Wetsuits, Skinners ales, Perranporth signs, 100% organic and a local artist Martin Hawkes who donated a print on the day which was taken away by one of the French competitors. Matt Way Joe’s Dad said “It was a great night and we are really grateful for the generosity of all the Companies that gave such amazing prizes and the people who gave money. It was a really privilege to meet Tom and work with the musicians who all knew his brother. Steve Skinner did a great job with the auction and just as we thought it was all over a local guy donated £100 to have a surf lesson with Skindog”.
